Yes. A U.S. money market mutual fund can lose value, even when it is designed to keep its share price near $1.00 and normally lets investors redeem on business days. These funds are investments in short-term debt, cash and cash equivalents—not bank deposits.
The outcome depends on the fund’s category, whether its net asset value (NAV) is stable or floating, its fees, the income generated by its holdings and the redemption rules that apply during market stress. This explanation reflects the SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s Money Market Funds: Investor Bulletin, dated November 4, 2024.

What “liquid fund” means in the United States
“Liquid fund” is used in several markets as a casual name for a fund holding very short-term, readily tradable instruments. In the United States, the regulated product relevant to this question is a money market mutual fund. It is a mutual fund that pools investors’ money and buys short-term debt securities, cash and cash equivalents.
You own shares of the fund. The fund owns the underlying assets. Your result is therefore tied to the value and income of those assets, minus the fund’s expenses. That structure is fundamentally different from putting money in a bank account.

Money market funds are commonly described as cash-management investments because they seek stability and easy access. “Seek” is important: it describes an investment objective, not a promise that your principal will never decline or that withdrawals will remain unrestricted in every market.
How a money market fund can lose money
A stable NAV can be repriced
Most money market funds offered to retail investors, along with government money market funds, seek to maintain a stable NAV of $1.00 per share. The target allows transactions to appear cash-like, but it is not a guarantee of value.
If the value of a stable-NAV fund’s holdings moves far enough away from $1.00, the fund must reprice its shares. The SEC’s November 2024 bulletin describes the threshold as a deviation of more than half a cent from $1.00. This event is commonly called “breaking the buck.” A repricing below $1.00 means an investor receives less than the amount originally invested for each affected share, before considering any distributions.

A floating NAV moves with asset values
Institutional prime and institutional tax-exempt money market funds use floating NAVs. Their share prices are based on current, market-based values of the assets they hold, so the price can move above or below $1.00.

When those assets decline in value, the fund’s NAV declines. An investor who sells while the NAV is lower receives less per share. A rise in NAV can produce the opposite result, but the key point is that a floating price makes changes visible in ordinary daily transactions rather than attempting to hold the price at one dollar.
Expenses can exceed investment income
A fund earns income from its short-term holdings and pays operating expenses. When short-term interest rates are extremely low, the income earned may be smaller than the fund’s expenses. The SEC warns that fees can then exceed investment income, leaving investors with a loss even if no security in the portfolio has suffered a dramatic default or price decline.
Review the fund’s expense ratio and any fee waivers in its prospectus and latest shareholder report. A waiver can change the current net return, and a fund’s costs or waivers can change later.

A fund can preserve its nominal share price and still fail to preserve what that money can buy. If the fund’s yield is below inflation, the real value of your balance falls over time. That is an erosion of purchasing power rather than a reduction in the displayed number of dollars, but it matters for savings goals and spending plans.

Fund categories and NAV structures
The SEC groups money market funds into government, tax-exempt (municipal) and prime categories. Funds can also be designed for retail or institutional investors. Category and investor eligibility help determine the NAV method and the rules that apply in stressed markets.
| Category or structure | Typical investor access | NAV approach described by the SEC | What to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government money market fund | Often available to retail investors; eligibility is fund-specific | Most seek a stable $1.00 NAV | Portfolio mandate, expenses, current income and redemption provisions |
| Retail prime money market fund | Retail investors meeting the fund’s terms | Generally seeks a stable $1.00 NAV | Credit exposure, fees, portfolio liquidity and stress provisions |
| Institutional prime money market fund | Institutional investors meeting the fund’s terms | Floating NAV that can move above or below $1.00 | Daily NAV changes, fees, holdings and liquidity-fee rules |
| Tax-exempt (municipal) money market fund | Retail or institutional access depends on the fund | Retail versions generally seek stability; institutional versions use a floating NAV | Municipal holdings, tax treatment, expenses and redemption terms |
These descriptions identify structures, not risk rankings. No category should be treated as automatically risk-free.
What “breaking the buck” looks like
- The fund’s assets lose value or income. Possible causes include a decline in the market value of a holding, a credit problem or expenses that exceed income.
- The fund calculates its NAV. A stable-NAV fund compares the value of its assets with the number of shares outstanding.
- The deviation exceeds the permitted band. The SEC bulletin identifies more than half a cent away from $1.00 as the point at which the stable-NAV fund must reprice.
- The share price changes. The fund announces a NAV other than $1.00, so an investor’s account value changes with the new price.
- Redemptions use the applicable NAV. Selling shares after repricing can return less than the amount paid, depending on the number of shares and the new NAV.
The SEC’s investor materials do not provide a quantified frequency of such losses. Do not treat a fund’s history of stable pricing as a guarantee that the price cannot change.

Normal business-day redemptions
Money market mutual fund shares are generally redeemable on demand, and investors can generally sell shares back to the fund on a business day at the NAV per share. Your fund’s prospectus sets the operational details, including any cutoff times, settlement conventions and account procedures.

“Generally redeemable” does not mean that the account is a checking account or that every request is completed instantly. A weekend, market holiday or processing timetable can affect when proceeds arrive. Check the fund’s own disclosure for the applicable schedule.
Liquidity fees during stress
A sharp wave of withdrawals can make it harder or more expensive for a fund to sell assets. The SEC bulletin says institutional prime and institutional tax-exempt funds are generally required to charge a liquidity fee when daily net redemptions exceed 5% of net assets. Additional circumstances can trigger fees, and other fund categories follow different rules.
A liquidity fee is deducted from the redemption proceeds covered by the rule. It is a contingent stress measure, not a charge that automatically applies to every ordinary withdrawal.
Suspension and liquidation
In certain circumstances, a fund may be permitted to suspend redemptions permanently and liquidate. If that occurs, you cannot rely on the usual business-day access while the process is carried out. The amount ultimately distributed depends on the value realized from the fund’s assets and the costs of winding it down.

Money market fund versus a bank money market deposit account
The similar names cause frequent mistakes. A money market mutual fund is a security. A money market deposit account is a bank deposit product. The insurance and legal protections are different.
| Feature | Money market mutual fund | Money market deposit account |
|---|---|---|
| Provider relationship | You buy shares in an investment company | You place a deposit with a bank |
| Value | Based on the fund’s NAV; stable-NAV funds target $1.00 but can reprice | Account balance governed by the bank-deposit contract |
| FDIC insurance | Not FDIC-insured | May be FDIC-insured within applicable legal limits when offered by an eligible bank |
| Return | Income and expenses from the fund’s portfolio affect your result | Interest rate and bank-account terms determine the return |
| Access | Normally redeemed on business days; stress rules can affect fees or availability | Subject to the deposit account’s transaction and withdrawal terms |
The SEC states: “Money invested in a money market fund, like money invested in any mutual fund, is not guaranteed by the FDIC.” A brokerage sweep into a money market fund therefore should not be described as an insured bank balance merely because it is used for cash management.
How to evaluate a specific fund
Generic yield lists are not enough. Use the fund’s current documents to determine what you are actually buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Identify the legal category. Confirm whether the fund is government, prime or tax-exempt, and whether it is intended for retail or institutional investors.
- Confirm the NAV method. Look for language stating whether the fund seeks a stable $1.00 NAV or uses a floating NAV.
- Read the prospectus. Check the investment mandate, eligible holdings, risk disclosures, expenses, fee waivers and purchase or redemption procedures.
- Read the latest shareholder report. Review the portfolio, maturity and credit information the report provides, along with current expenses and income.
- Locate liquidity provisions. Find the sections describing liquidity fees, redemption restrictions, suspension authority and liquidation procedures.
- Check the current yield in context. Determine whether the quoted yield is net of expenses, reflects a temporary waiver or is likely to change as short-term rates move.
- Match the fund to your time horizon. Money needed for an imminent bill has different requirements from money that can remain invested through a period of market stress.
- Verify tax treatment. A tax-exempt label does not make every investor’s return tax-free in every jurisdiction; use the fund’s disclosure and, when necessary, qualified tax advice.
Three practical loss scenarios
Scenario 1: A stable-NAV fund reprices
You buy shares in a fund targeting $1.00. A sufficiently large decline in the value of its holdings pushes the NAV more than half a cent away from that target. The fund must reprice, and your shares are then worth the new NAV rather than an assured dollar.
Scenario 2: A floating-NAV fund falls modestly
You hold an institutional prime fund with a floating NAV. Market values of its short-term assets decline during the day. The next published NAV is below the prior NAV, so a redemption at that price returns less per share.
Scenario 3: Fees consume the return
Short-term rates fall to very low levels while the fund’s operating costs remain. Expenses exceed portfolio income. Your account may show little or no positive return, and the net result can be negative even without a headline event in the portfolio.
What protections you should and should not assume
- Do assume: the fund must provide disclosure describing its strategy, expenses, risks and redemption terms.
- Do not assume: a stable $1.00 objective is an FDIC guarantee or an unconditional promise of principal.
- Do not assume: the word “liquid” eliminates market risk, fees or stress-period restrictions.
- Do not assume: a government or tax-exempt label makes every possible loss mechanism disappear.
- Do assume: the exact prospectus and shareholder report control the terms for the fund you own.
How current are these rules?
This article uses the SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s investor bulletin dated November 4, 2024, together with the SEC’s general mutual-fund guidance on NAV, fees and redemptions. Regulations, fund documents and operational terms can change. Before investing or relying on a fund for near-term cash, read the latest prospectus and shareholder report and verify the current redemption and fee provisions.
