Yes. If the securities or other assets held by an exchange-traded fund (ETF) fall to nearly zero, the value of your ETF shares can be wiped out. In an ordinary cash purchase, that loss is generally limited to the amount you paid for the shares. Borrowing to buy the ETF, however, can leave you owing more than you invested.
The answer depends on five things: what the fund owns, whether it resets leverage daily, whether you used margin, how its market price compares with net asset value (NAV), and whether the product is actually an ETF rather than an exchange-traded note (ETN). Each changes the way losses occur and what protection, if any, applies.

What happens when an ETF loses value?
An ETF pools investors’ money and uses it to hold securities, commodities, derivatives, cash, or a combination of assets. Each share represents an interest in that portfolio. The fund calculates a NAV based on the value of its holdings, minus expenses and liabilities, while the shares trade throughout the day on an exchange.

When the portfolio falls, NAV usually falls too. The market price can also decline, although it may trade temporarily above or below NAV. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) states on Investor.gov: “You may lose some or all of the money you invest because the securities held by a fund can go down in value.” ETFs are not bank deposits and are not insured or guaranteed against market losses by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) or another government agency.

A diversified ETF spreads exposure across many holdings, which reduces the damage that one company’s failure can cause. It cannot prevent a broad market collapse, a sector-wide crisis, a severe commodity decline, or losses caused by the fund’s strategy and derivatives.
Can a traditional ETF go all the way to zero?
A fund can theoretically reach a negligible value if nearly everything it owns becomes worthless, although no probability estimate for a traditional ETF reaching zero is published. “Diversified” means the fund owns more than one exposure; it does not mean the investment has a guaranteed floor.
Broad-market funds
A broad index ETF may own hundreds or thousands of securities. An individual holding can fail without destroying the fund, but a simultaneous decline across the market can reduce the value of every share. Diversification cannot guarantee a positive return or eliminate market-wide losses.

A sector, country, commodity, or narrowly focused ETF has fewer independent sources of return. A collapse in the fund’s main industry or asset can therefore have a much larger effect than the failure of one company in a broad-market portfolio.

Single-stock leveraged ETFs
Some specialized ETFs track one company and amplify its daily movement. SEC staff warns that these products can be riskier than simply holding the underlying stock because concentration and leverage operate at the same time.
How the loss limit changes by product and account
| Situation | What you own or owe | How losses can arise |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional ETF bought with cash | Shares in a portfolio | The share value can fall to nearly zero. The loss on that unborrowed purchase is generally limited to the amount invested. |
| Leveraged or inverse ETF | Shares pursuing a daily multiple or inverse of a benchmark | Daily resets and compounding can produce a long-period loss very different from the benchmark’s cumulative return, including a near-total loss. |
| Single-stock leveraged ETF | Concentrated exposure to one company with amplification | The underlying stock’s movements are magnified, creating more concentration risk than an ordinary diversified ETF. |
| ETF purchased on margin | Shares plus a loan from the broker | The shares can fall while the loan remains due, so the account loss can exceed your cash contribution. |
| ETN | An unsecured debt obligation, not a fund portfolio | Credit and market risks can result in loss of the entire investment. |
Why leveraged and inverse ETFs can lose money even when an index rises
Most leveraged and inverse ETFs target a multiple or inverse of a benchmark’s daily return. They reset their exposure each trading day. The SEC’s wording is precise: “Leveraged and inverse ETFs typically are designed to achieve their stated performance objectives on a daily basis.” That daily objective is not a promise of the same multiple over a month, year, or other holding period.
Compounding and volatility
Daily returns compound. In a volatile, back-and-forth market, gains and losses are calculated on a changing base, and the reset can erode value even if the benchmark finishes near where it started. The effect can be especially severe for inverse funds and high-multiple products.

In an August 29, 2023 bulletin, the SEC gave two four-month illustrations. An ETF seeking twice an index’s daily return fell 6% while that index gained 2%. Another ETF seeking three times a different index’s daily return fell 53% while the index gained about 8%. These are regulator examples, not forecasts or average results for every leveraged fund.

Before holding one beyond a single trading session, read the current prospectus and confirm that its daily objective fits your intended holding period. A benchmark’s long-term return cannot be multiplied mechanically to predict the fund’s result.
Can you lose more than you invest in an ETF?
Yes, but the usual cause is the account structure rather than an unborrowed ETF share. Buying on margin means the broker lends part of the purchase price. If the ETF declines, the market value of the shares can become less than the outstanding loan. Interest, maintenance requirements, and a broker’s liquidation of positions can further affect the account.
A simple margin illustration
Suppose you contribute $1,000 and borrow another $1,000 to buy $2,000 of ETF shares. If the shares lose 60%, they are worth $800, but the $1,000 loan remains before interest and other charges. Your $1,000 contribution has been exhausted and the account can show a deficit. The exact outcome depends on the broker’s agreement, collateral rules, liquidation timing, and other assets in the account.
That is different from saying an ordinary cash purchase creates a debt. Keep the ETF-loss question separate from the total risk of a leveraged brokerage account.

How market price, NAV, spreads, and liquidity affect your result
ETF shares trade between buyers and sellers. The trading price can be higher than NAV (a premium) or lower than NAV (a discount). Premiums and discounts can widen when markets are stressed, when the underlying assets are hard to price, or when trading activity is thin.
The bid-ask spread
The bid is the highest displayed price a buyer is offering; the ask is the lowest displayed price a seller is willing to accept. You normally buy at the ask and sell at the bid. The SEC’s ETF bulletin illustrates the mechanics with 200 shares bought at a $60 ask and immediately sold at a $59.50 bid: before commissions or other costs, the spread creates a $100 loss even if NAV has not changed.
When liquidity is impaired
A thinly traded ETF may have a wide spread, fewer available buyers, or a market that becomes difficult to access during a disruption. A market price can therefore be unfavorable even when the portfolio’s published NAV moves less. Check both the fund’s trading activity and its premium-or-discount history rather than assuming an exchange listing guarantees easy execution.
Does SIPC cover ETF losses?
No. Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) protection is not insurance against a decline in an ETF’s price, a bad strategy, leverage, a spread, or a premium turning into a discount.

SIPC addresses a different failure: a qualifying shortfall of customer securities or cash when a SIPC-member brokerage fails. A 2023 SEC/SIPC investor bulletin describes advances of up to $500,000 per customer, including a $250,000 limit for cash claims, subject to eligibility and the applicable rules. Those limits concern missing customer property, not the market value that disappeared because an ETF fell.
For a current claim, verify that the brokerage is a SIPC member and review current SIPC guidance. Do not treat a brokerage account’s protection status as a guarantee of investment performance.
ETF versus ETN: check the legal structure
The word “exchange-traded” does not by itself identify a fund. ETFs are generally registered as investment companies or unit investment trusts and hold a portfolio. ETNs are unsecured debt obligations of a financial institution. Their value depends on the reference index and the issuer’s ability to pay.
The SEC warns that an ETN can result in loss of the entire investment. Before relying on a ticker’s nickname or a website’s category label, read the current prospectus and identify whether you are buying a fund interest or an issuer’s debt.
How to assess the risk of a specific ETF
- Identify the legal product. Confirm that it is an ETF, not an ETN or another exchange-traded product, in the current prospectus.
- Read the objective and strategy. Look for words such as “daily,” “inverse,” “leveraged,” “single stock,” derivatives, futures, swaps, or active concentration.
- Inspect the holdings. Note how many positions the fund owns, the largest weights, countries, sectors, counterparties, and the liquidity of the underlying assets.
- Check the holding-period warning. A daily leveraged or inverse objective may not match a multi-week, multi-month, or long-term plan.
- Review costs and liabilities. Read the expense ratio, trading costs, financing expenses, and any other charges disclosed in the prospectus.
- Compare market price with NAV. Review current and historical premiums or discounts and the bid-ask spread at the time you expect to trade.
- Decide whether margin is involved. Confirm whether the account is cash or margin and calculate the result if the ETF falls sharply while the loan remains outstanding.
- Set a loss and position-size rule. Decide in advance how much of your portfolio can be exposed without forcing a sale or threatening essential goals.
Practical ways to reduce the chance of a devastating loss
- Use diversification as a risk reducer, not as a promise that losses are impossible.
- Avoid buying a daily leveraged or inverse ETF for a long holding period unless you understand its reset and compounding behavior.
- Be especially cautious with products tied to one stock, one narrow sector, or illiquid underlying assets.
- Use limit orders when the spread or premium/discount is material, and check the displayed quote before submitting the order.
- Keep emergency savings and near-term spending money outside volatile investments.
- Do not assume SIPC, FDIC, or a brokerage’s custody arrangements protect you from market declines.
- Recheck the current prospectus, holdings, fees, and market-price/NAV data before adding to an existing position; fund strategies and exposures can change.
Bottom line: what “lose everything” means
A cash investment in a conventional ETF can be reduced to nearly nothing if its portfolio becomes nearly worthless. Diversification may lower the chance that one holding causes that outcome, but it cannot remove market risk. Leveraged and inverse funds add daily-reset and compounding risks; single-stock funds add concentration; margin can turn a loss into a debt; spreads and discounts can reduce execution value; and ETNs carry issuer-credit risk. SIPC may address missing property after a brokerage failure, but it does not restore an ETF’s fallen market value.
