Sometimes, but not automatically. Employer life insurance usually ends when your employment or eligibility ends. Your group contract may let you continue some or all of the coverage through portability, or convert eligible coverage to an individual policy. The available option, amount, price and deadline depend on the employer’s contract, insurer, state rules and the reason coverage ended. Check your certificate and separation notice, then contact human resources (HR) or the insurer promptly.
What happens to employer life insurance when you quit, are laid off or retire?
Group life insurance is tied to an employer-sponsored plan, not to your employment record forever. The governing certificate or policy normally states when your coverage terminates. That date may be your last day worked, the end of a payroll period, or another date specified by the plan. A separation notice may give a different administrative date, so ask which date controls.
Do not assume that deductions from your final paycheck mean coverage continues. A final payroll deduction can reflect an earlier coverage period, while the policy may end on a separate termination date. Ask for written confirmation of:

- whether basic, supplemental and accidental-death coverage end on the same date;
- whether spouse or child coverage has a separate termination rule; and
- which continuation or conversion rights apply to your circumstances.
If you die after coverage ends and before a new policy is in force, the employer plan may not pay a benefit. Treat the termination date and any election deadline as time-sensitive.
Portability and conversion are different choices
Insurers use “portability” and “conversion” for different ways to continue group life benefits. The names can vary by contract, and a plan may offer one, both or neither.

| Decision point | Portability | Conversion |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | Continued group-term life coverage under the plan’s portability provisions. | An individual life policy, often permanent or whole life, issued under a conversion privilege. |
| Medical underwriting | May be available without medical questions, depending on the plan and when you elect it. | May be available without evidence of insurability when the contract’s conversion right applies. |
| Pricing pattern | Rates can rise as you get older. The insurer’s schedule and payment method control. | Often costs more than portability; conversion rates are generally age-based and level for the life of that policy. |
| What controls eligibility | The group portability contract, your eligibility, state rules, coverage amount and election timing. | The certificate and group contract, the policy form offered, eligible amount, and application and payment timing. |
| Limits | Not every employee or dependent necessarily qualifies, and the amount may be restricted. | Not every coverage type or amount is necessarily convertible. |
These are general descriptions, not a promise that either option exists in your plan. MetLife explains that conversion and portability generally have 31 days from when benefits end, subject to the individual plan features, and tells readers to use their own conversion notice: MetLife, “Transition Solutions: continuation options for group life benefits”. A Prudential New York Plan A portability form likewise requires an application within 31 days of the coverage termination date and says the employer contract controls if a summary conflicts with it: Prudential Group Term Life Insurance Portability Election Form.
How portability works
Coverage remains group term insurance
Portability keeps you in a group-term arrangement rather than creating a completely new individually underwritten policy. The insurer sets the available amount, rate schedule, eligibility rules and payment process. Coverage may be lower than your employee amount, and some supplemental or accidental-death benefits may not be portable.

Payroll deductions often make employer coverage look inexpensive because the employer may pay part of the cost and group rates spread risk across employees. After separation, you generally pay the full portability premium. Ask for the current premium, how often it is billed, and the age-based schedule or future rate changes. A quote that looks affordable at age 35 may be materially different later.

Election timing matters
MetLife’s consumer explanation says, “For conversion and portability, you generally have 31 days from when your benefits end to continue your coverage,” while qualifying that statement by individual plan features. The 31-day period is an insurer example, not a nationwide rule. Your certificate, notice and state-specific form control. Unum’s election form provides another insurer example of a portability election and its required application information: Unum, “Term Life Insurance Election of Portability Coverage”.
How conversion works
You move to an individual policy
Conversion changes eligible group coverage into an individual policy offered under the conversion provision. The resulting policy is often permanent life insurance, but the exact policy type, guarantees, cash-value features and premium structure depend on the contract and insurer. You do not automatically receive the same term benefit or the same face amount.
Medical questions may be waived, but only when the privilege applies
A conversion right can be valuable if illness, medication or a hazardous occupation would make a new individual policy expensive or unavailable. When the contract says conversion is without evidence of insurability, the insurer generally does not require a new medical exam for the eligible amount. That waiver is not universal: the certificate may exclude certain benefits, cap the amount or require specific employment and coverage history.

Expect a different price
Conversion commonly costs more than portability because you are buying an individual permanent policy rather than continuing group term coverage. The premium is usually based on your age at conversion and is described by insurers as level for the life of that policy. Request the policy illustration or premium schedule, not just a monthly estimate, and confirm whether premiums are guaranteed.
How long do you have to apply?
There is no single deadline for every employer plan. A 31-day application window appears in the MetLife explanation and in Prudential’s New York Plan A form, but other contracts can use different periods, trigger dates or procedures. The clock may start when benefits end rather than your last day at work. A notice delivered late does not necessarily extend the contractual deadline.
Read the certificate and separation packet for:
- the event that starts the deadline;
- the final date and time for receipt, not merely mailing;
- accepted delivery methods, such as portal upload, email, fax or mail;
- the first premium required with the application; and
- rules for correcting an incomplete application.
Keep a dated copy of every form, payment receipt, upload confirmation and insurer response. If the deadline is close, call the insurer and HR the same day and ask for written instructions.

A step-by-step checklist after leaving your job
- Locate the governing documents. Find the group life certificate or booklet, summary plan description, beneficiary record and separation notice. The certificate—not a general HR webpage—usually contains the continuation language.
- Confirm the termination date. Ask HR and the insurer to identify the date in writing and whether different benefits end on different dates.
- Ask about every continuation path. Specifically ask whether portability, conversion or another continuation provision is available, which coverage parts qualify, and whether employee and dependent coverage are treated separately.
- Request the exact amount. Confirm the minimum and maximum amount, any reduction from your employee benefit, and whether supplemental or accidental-death benefits can be included.
- Get a written premium quote. Request the initial premium, billing frequency, age-based increases, guaranteed period and consequences of a missed payment.
- Obtain the correct form. Use the insurer’s current application or election form for your plan and state. Ask whether an employer signature, proof of coverage or identity documents are required.
- Check beneficiary instructions. Ask whether your existing beneficiary designation carries over. If the form requires a new designation, complete it carefully and retain confirmation. Review dependent beneficiaries separately.
- Compare alternatives before the deadline. You may also compare an individually underwritten policy. Its price can depend on age and insurability, while conversion can avoid medical questions only where the applicable privilege provides that right.
- Submit the election and first payment. Follow the specified delivery method and payment instructions. Coverage may not be effective until the insurer receives both a valid election and required premium.
- Verify issuance. Obtain written confirmation of the policy number, effective date, amount, beneficiaries and future payment method. Do not cancel replacement coverage until the new policy is active.
What can continuation cost?
There is no universal price. Your employer’s payroll rate may have included an employer contribution that disappears after separation. Portability premiums can rise with age under the insurer’s schedule. Conversion is often more expensive than portability because it provides an individual permanent policy, and the premium may be level for that policy’s life. A new individual policy may be cheaper or more expensive depending on age, health, underwriting class, term length and amount.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Compare the options on the same basis:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How much death benefit is guaranteed? | A lower premium may simply reflect a smaller amount or shorter benefit period. |
| How long does coverage last? | Portability is generally term coverage; conversion may be permanent, subject to policy terms and premiums. |
| Can the premium increase? | Portability schedules may rise with age; confirm whether conversion premiums are guaranteed. |
| Is medical underwriting required? | A new individual policy may require health information; a conversion privilege may waive it only within its stated limits. |
| What happens if you stop paying? | Ask about lapse dates, grace periods and any nonforfeiture or cash-value rules for a converted policy. |
What if you have a health condition or need substantial coverage?
Do not let a short deadline force an unexamined decision. If a medical condition could make new underwriting difficult, first preserve any no-evidence option for which you qualify, then compare it with other coverage. If you need a large death benefit for a mortgage, dependents or business obligations, check whether the group amount is capped and whether a separate individual policy is necessary.
A licensed insurance professional can explain policy illustrations and underwriting differences. Ask the professional to identify commissions or other compensation and to compare guaranteed benefits, not only projected values. Continue paying any existing coverage until you know exactly when replacement coverage begins.

Does COBRA cover employer life insurance?
Usually, no. COBRA is a federal continuation framework for group health plans. The Department of Labor’s guide describes continuation of health coverage under COBRA; it is not authority that employer life insurance continues under COBRA: U.S. Department of Labor, “An Employer’s Guide to Group Health Continuation Coverage Under COBRA”. Life insurance continuation comes from the life-plan contract, an insurer portability provision, a conversion privilege or applicable state law—not from assuming that health-plan COBRA rules apply.
State law and contract limits
State requirements can affect what a group life contract must offer, but they are not a nationwide guarantee. A 1996 Department of Labor advisory opinion discussed Minnesota requirements for continuation at group rates and an individual conversion option, along with ERISA preemption issues: Advisory Opinion 1996-03A. That historical, state-specific analysis should not be read as proof that every employee in every state has the same right today.
If HR and the insurer give conflicting answers, ask them to identify the controlling certificate provision and state rule in writing. You can also contact your state insurance department for help understanding a disputed notice, deadline or denial. The department cannot rewrite your contract, but it may explain complaint procedures and applicable state requirements.
Common mistakes that can leave a gap
- Assuming coverage follows you. Employment termination and coverage termination are separate questions; verify both dates.
- Waiting for an annual enrollment period. Continuation rights often have a short, event-based deadline.
- Choosing by monthly price alone. Compare benefit amount, duration, guarantees and future rate changes.
- Ignoring dependents. Spouse and child coverage may have different eligibility, amounts and deadlines.
- Forgetting beneficiaries. A beneficiary designation may not transfer as expected; obtain written confirmation.
- Missing the first payment. An approved application without the required premium may not put coverage in force.
- Treating a summary as the contract. If a brochure conflicts with the certificate, ask which document legally controls.
- Confusing COBRA with life insurance. Health-plan continuation rules do not establish life-insurance continuation.
Questions to ask HR or the insurer
- On what exact date does each life benefit end?
- Do I qualify for portability, conversion or both?
- Which portions and amounts are eligible, and are there reductions?
- What is the application deadline, and when must the insurer receive the form?
- Is evidence of insurability required for this option?
- What is the complete premium schedule and can rates change?
- Can my spouse or children continue coverage independently?
- Does my beneficiary designation carry over?
- What payment is required to make coverage effective?
- How will you confirm approval, effective date and policy delivery?
Bottom line for a departing employee
You may be able to keep employer life insurance, but only through the specific continuation rights in your plan. Portability usually preserves group term coverage with age-related pricing; conversion generally creates an individual permanent policy and can cost more. Neither option is automatic, and a 31-day period cited by insurers is not a universal legal deadline. Get the certificate, termination date, forms, premium quote and beneficiary instructions immediately, then submit the correct election and payment before the contract’s deadline.
