You may use it in supported investment journeys, including eligible initial public offering (IPO) applications through the ASBA process and some recurring mandates. The investment product, the regulated intermediary and the payment request are separate things. A UPI payment does not make an investment offer legitimate.
Never disclose your UPI PIN, bank or broker one-time password (OTP), trading or demat password, or account login credentials. A PIN authorizes money leaving your account; it is not needed to receive money. Before approving anything, confirm the intermediary, the payment handle, the displayed payee and what will happen to the funds.

What “investing through UPI” actually means
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) moves money between bank accounts instantly. It does not select a fund, create shares, assess risk or guarantee returns. Those functions belong to the investment product and its intermediary, such as a broker, registrar or fund platform that is eligible for the particular transaction.
That distinction matters because a fraudster can use a familiar payment app, a convincing logo or a QR code while offering an unregistered scheme. The presence of a UPI screen proves only that a payment request exists—not that the underlying investment is genuine.
#1 Best Overall
A UPI ID is a payment address used to route a transaction. It is different from the UPI PIN, which is the secret used to authorize a debit. You can provide a UPI ID when a legitimate application requires it, but you must still inspect every live request before approving it.
Legitimate investment uses of UPI
IPO applications through ASBA
SEBI recognizes UPI as a payment mechanism for eligible IPO applications submitted through ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount). In this route, money is blocked in your bank account rather than immediately transferred to the issuer. The amount is debited if shares are allotted; money relating to an unsuccessful or partly successful application is released according to the ASBA process.
The exact eligible banks, applications, channels and limits can change. Use the current instructions for the specific IPO and do not rely on an old article’s bank list or a universal UPI limit.
- Start with an eligible intermediary and application channel. Confirm that the broker, bank or other intermediary is permitted to handle that IPO application.
- Enter your own UPI ID. The application generates a mandate request for the amount covered by the bid.
- Open the request in your bank’s UPI app. Check the issuer or intermediary name, amount, account and purpose shown on the live screen.
- Authorize only after checking. Enter your PIN in your own app to approve the block. Never type the PIN into a link, form or conversation supplied by another person.
- Monitor the mandate and allotment. The block, debit and release follow the IPO and ASBA process. Keep the application details until the funds are settled.
This describes the IPO/ASBA route only. A random “IPO opportunity” sent by message, or a request to send money to an employee’s personal UPI handle, is not validated merely because it uses UPI.
Recurring mandates and mutual-fund payments
NPCI’s UPI AutoPay feature supports recurring e-mandates, including use cases such as mutual-fund payments. A mandate can authorize scheduled debits, so read its frequency, maximum amount, start and end dates, and cancellation terms before accepting it.

AutoPay is a payment feature, not proof that a fund, adviser or platform is regulated. Verify the provider and the mandate details independently. Do not approve a recurring instruction simply because a caller says it is needed to “activate” an investment or release returns.
RuPay credit card on UPI is a different case
NPCI guidance for RuPay credit cards linked to UPI excludes mutual funds and several other categories from permitted credit-card payment use cases, subject to issuer and Reserve Bank of India restrictions. That limitation concerns a RuPay credit card connected to UPI; it should not be generalized to every UPI payment from a bank account. Check the current rules for the exact card, bank and transaction type.

Information you must never share
Your UPI PIN
The UPI PIN authorizes a bank transaction. NPCI’s UPI FAQ states: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” It also explains that the PIN authorizes transactions and that bank customer support will not ask for it.
Legitimate support may help you reset or troubleshoot a PIN through an official app or channel, but no employee, broker, buyer, seller or “refund department” needs to know the existing PIN. If someone asks you to enter it to receive money, a reward, an IPO refund or investment returns, stop.
Bank, broker and other OTPs
SEBI’s Investor Charter instructs investors: “Do not share One Time Password (OTP) received from banks, brokers, etc. These are meant to be used by you only.” An OTP can approve a login, mandate, card registration or transaction. Read the message describing what it will authorize; do not forward the code or dictate it over the phone.
Rank #3
NPCI separately warns against sharing an OTP received while registering a RuPay credit card. Treat every OTP as an authorization secret, even when the person asking claims to be from your bank or investment platform.

Do not give anyone your trading password, demat password, depository-facility login, app password or the credentials used to access an investment account. SEBI’s investor guidance treats these as private credentials. A person who obtains them may place orders, change bank details or obtain account information even without your UPI PIN.
Other secrets that let someone act as you
Keep private any authorization information that can let another person approve a debit, change an account or impersonate you: device passcodes used for banking, security answers, recovery codes and authorization links. This does not mean that an ordinary UPI ID is secret in the same way as a PIN or OTP. It means that sharing a payment address never removes your duty to verify the request it produces.
How to check a UPI investment payment before approving it
1. Verify the entity and activity
Check the investment entity’s current SEBI registration using SEBI’s official resources, and confirm that its registration covers the activity being offered. SEBI cautions against unregistered investment schemes and directs people seeking investment advice to appropriately registered advisers. A registration claim in a message, presentation or social-media profile is not enough.
2. Inspect the live payment details
For payments collected by registered intermediaries, SEBI’s June 11, 2025 circular describes exclusive, validated UPI IDs using the @valid handle and confirmation-screen checks. Open the payment in your own UPI app and compare the live handle and displayed name with the current official verification information. A screenshot sent by a stranger can be edited and is not evidence of a valid payee.

3. Match the purpose, amount and timing
Before entering the PIN, confirm who will receive the money, why it is being collected, the amount, and whether it is a one-time payment or a recurring mandate. An unexpected collect request, a different amount from your application, or a mandate with an unfamiliar schedule is a reason to decline and verify through an independent official channel.
4. Treat QR codes and “receive money” instructions as a warning
NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance says: “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not receiving them.” You do not scan a QR code or enter a PIN to receive an investment refund, prize or transfer. Scanning generally loads the other party’s payment details; entering the PIN authorizes a debit from your account.
5. Use banking channels—not an employee’s personal account
SEBI’s Investor Charter says to pay a registered intermediary through banking channels and not in an intermediary employee’s name. If an employee, agent or “relationship manager” asks you to use a personal UPI handle, stop and contact the firm through contact details obtained independently.
6. Reject pressure and guaranteed-return claims
Fake investment schemes commonly combine promises of guaranteed or unusually high returns with urgency, cloned applications, unsolicited links and social-engineering calls. Genuine investment outcomes are not made safe by a countdown timer or a request to keep the payment secret. Pause, verify the registration and review the product documents before committing money.
Red flags and the correct response
| What you see | Why it is risky | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A caller asks for your UPI PIN or OTP | Those credentials authorize transactions or access | Refuse, end the call and use an official support channel |
| A QR code is supplied to “receive” a refund or returns | Entering a PIN can debit your account | Do not scan or authorize; verify the refund independently |
| The UPI handle does not match the verified intermediary | The payment may go to an unrelated account | Decline and confirm the handle through current official guidance |
| An employee requests payment to a personal handle | It bypasses the intermediary’s controlled collection process | Do not pay; report the request to the firm |
| An unexpected recurring mandate appears | Future debits may occur without a new prompt | Reject or cancel it and investigate how it was created |
| A message promises guaranteed returns or demands immediate payment | Pressure and certainty are common fraud signals | Stop, verify registration and assess the product independently |
Choosing between UPI, other bank channels and mandates
When an investment offers more than one way to pay, compare the route rather than assuming that the fastest method is safest.

| Check | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Is the intermediary currently registered, and is it eligible for this exact activity? |
| Channel | Is the app, bank or application channel listed for the specific IPO, fund or service? |
| Recipient | Does the live handle and displayed name match official verification guidance? |
| Authorization type | Is this a single debit, an ASBA block or a recurring mandate? What are the amount and expiry terms? |
| Outcome if unsuccessful | For an application that fails or receives no allotment, is money blocked, debited, released or refunded, and under which process? |
ASBA, validated-UPI collection and AutoPay answer these questions differently. Read the terms for the particular route instead of treating every UPI request as equivalent.
Limits, availability and changing rules
There is no single current UPI investment limit that applies to every product and payment type. NPCI’s FAQ contains category-specific limit statements, while IPO instructions can state route-specific limits and participation conditions. Eligible banks, apps, intermediaries and payment-handle implementations can also change.
For an active IPO or mandate, check the current SEBI and NPCI information and the issuer or intermediary’s official instructions on the day you apply. Do not infer that a limit, bank list or feature available in one issue is available in another. The guidance considered here was accessed on October 9, 2026; payment rules and registrations remain subject to change.

If you have already approved a suspicious request
- Stop further authorization. Do not approve additional collect requests, mandates or OTP prompts, and do not share more credentials.
- Contact your bank and the relevant intermediary immediately through numbers or in-app support obtained from their official channels. Explain whether the transaction is pending, completed or recurring.
- Secure account access. Change exposed trading, demat or online-account passwords through the official service, and review active mandates, beneficiaries and recent transactions.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the transaction reference, handle, messages, phone numbers, screenshots and timestamps for the bank, intermediary and appropriate authorities.
- Monitor the account. Check for additional debits, altered contact details or unfamiliar login activity and report anything new promptly.
Do not pay a second “verification fee” to recover money. A person who already has your trust may use the first incident to request another PIN, OTP or transfer.
The practical rule
Use UPI only as the payment step in a verified investment process. Confirm the intermediary and the live payee, understand whether funds are blocked, debited or scheduled, and authorize only a request you initiated and recognize. Keep every PIN, OTP and investment-account credential to yourself; anyone who legitimately needs payment can receive an approved transaction without knowing those secrets.
