Yes, but two UANs are not the intended arrangement. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) designs one Universal Account Number (UAN) to connect the Member IDs created for your different jobs. If you have been allotted two UANs, tell your current employer and email EPFO at [email protected] with both numbers. EPFO says it will verify the records, block the previous UANs and keep the current UAN active.
Do not treat separate Member IDs for separate employers as duplicate UANs. Member IDs are job-specific; the UAN is the umbrella account intended to link them.

What a UAN is—and what it is not
A UAN is a 12-digit account identifier used in India’s EPFO system. Each establishment can create a separate Member ID for your provident-fund account, while your UAN is meant to connect those Member IDs to one employment history. EPFO’s member FAQ describes the UAN as an umbrella for multiple Member IDs allotted by different establishments.

Changing jobs therefore normally creates another Member ID, not another UAN. When you join a new establishment, you should give the employer your existing UAN so the new Member ID can be associated with it. A second UAN is an account-allocation problem that needs EPFO’s records corrected.

Why two UANs can be allotted
EPFO’s employee information booklet identifies two possible explanations:
- Your previous employer may not have entered your Date of Exit in its electronic challan-cum-return (ECR) filing.
- You may have applied for a transfer of service at your current establishment.
These are possible causes listed by EPFO, not a diagnosis of your individual account. A missing Date of Exit can leave the earlier employment appearing open when a new employer creates or associates records. A transfer request can also result in records being handled in a way that produces more than one UAN.
EPFO’s booklet says that two UANs could result from “not filling of Date of Exit by your previous employer in ECR filing and / or” applying for a transfer of service in the current establishment.

Do not assume that a duplicate was caused by fraud or by an error you made. First compare the numbers and employment records, then ask the employers and EPFO to verify the account history.
What to do if you have two UAN numbers
1. Confirm that the numbers really are UANs
Write down every UAN shown in your EPFO correspondence, payslips or portal records. A Member ID may look like another account number but is not another UAN. Check the label used in the document or portal and note which employers and periods are attached to each number.
Keep a simple record containing:
- Each UAN exactly as displayed.
- The employer associated with each UAN or Member ID.
- Your joining and leaving dates, where known.
- Any transfer-claim reference or acknowledgement.
This inventory helps EPFO distinguish a duplicate UAN from a wrongly linked Member ID or an ordinary change of employer.

2. Tell your current employer
Inform the human-resources or payroll team at your current establishment that more than one UAN has been allotted to you. Give them both UANs and explain which one you are currently using. The current employer can check the Member ID it submitted and coordinate with the previous establishment about the employment dates.

3. Email EPFO with both UANs
EPFO’s employee booklet directs a member with two UANs to report the matter by email. Send your message to [email protected]. Include your current UAN and each previous UAN, clearly identifying which number you believe is current.
A useful message should contain:
- Your full name as recorded in EPFO records.
- Your current UAN and every earlier UAN you discovered.
- Your current employer’s name and establishment details, if available.
- The previous employer’s name and the approximate employment period.
- A short description of the duplicate-number problem.
- Transfer-claim details or other reference numbers, if the issue arose during a transfer.
Use only official EPFO communication channels. The member portal cautions members not to share account credentials or one-time passwords with other people. Do not put your password or OTP in an email, and do not send sensitive documents to an unverified address merely because someone contacts you claiming to represent EPFO. If EPFO needs additional information, follow the instructions in its official response.
4. Ask the previous employer to check the Date of Exit
Contact the previous employer and ask whether your Date of Exit was entered in its ECR filing. EPFO lists an entered Date of Exit as a condition to check before submitting an online provident-fund transfer request. If the date is missing or incorrect, ask the employer to review the filing and correct the employment record through the appropriate EPFO process.

5. Tell EPFO if a transfer request is involved
If you applied to transfer your provident-fund service when joining the current establishment, mention that application in your email. Give the claim or acknowledgement number and explain whether it is pending, rejected, completed or unavailable. A transfer request may be one of the circumstances associated with a second UAN, so EPFO needs the claim history when it reviews the records.
Before filing another transfer request, resolve which UAN should remain active. Submitting repeated claims against different UANs can make the record harder to reconcile.
6. Wait for verification and the account correction
EPFO’s booklet says that, after due verification, the previous UANs will be blocked and the current UAN will remain active. The booklet does not promise a correction deadline. Keep your email, attachments and employer correspondence so you can refer to the original report if you need to follow up.
“Blocked” does not mean that your employment or provident-fund balance is erased. It means the earlier UAN should no longer be the active number for your membership. After EPFO completes the review, confirm that your relevant Member IDs and service history appear under the active UAN.
7. Check access through the current official channels
EPFO’s member portal currently directs members to the UMANG app for existing UAN activation and new UAN generation. It also lists 14470 as the EPFO helpdesk number. These are general access routes, not a guarantee that a duplicate-UAN case will be resolved immediately or that a helpdesk contact can replace the verification process.
Portal labels and procedures can change. Use the current EPFO portal or UMANG instructions when you check activation, account status or claim information, and avoid unofficial apps or agents asking for your login details.

Duplicate UAN versus an incorrectly linked Member ID
These problems look similar because both can produce an unfamiliar record, but EPFO treats them differently.

EPFO’s 2026 workflow material describes a separate self-service or assisted process for de-linking a wrongly linked Member ID. It includes eligibility checks and restrictions; records with existing transfer claims or settled withdrawals may not qualify for the same treatment. That workflow is not a substitute for reporting two UANs. Do not try to de-link a genuine employment Member ID simply because you see two account numbers.

When you report the issue, do not try to choose the “better” UAN based only on the number or on which portal login works. EPFO’s stated outcome is based on verification: previous UANs are blocked and the current UAN is retained. Your role is to provide complete, consistent records so EPFO can identify the active employment relationship.
Use the following checks before sending your email:
- Match names, dates of birth and other identifying details across the UAN records.
- List every employer connected to each number.
- Note any mismatch in joining date, leaving date or employment status.
- Attach or quote only information requested through an official channel.
- Keep copies of payslips, transfer acknowledgements and employer replies in case EPFO asks for clarification.
Common mistakes that can delay resolution
Assuming every extra number is a duplicate UAN
A new Member ID after a job change is normal. Verify the label before reporting a duplicate. Misclassifying a Member ID can send you into the wrong correction process.

Generating an additional number increases the number of records EPFO must reconcile. Report the existing numbers instead and wait for the official determination.

Ignoring the previous employer’s Date of Exit
If the previous employment remains open in the ECR record, a transfer or new membership may not align correctly. Ask the employer to verify the date before pursuing another transfer claim.
Using a self-service de-link request for a duplicate UAN
De-linking addresses a wrongly attached Member ID, not the booklet’s duplicate-UAN instruction. Existing transfer claims or settled withdrawals can also affect de-linking eligibility.
Sharing passwords or OTPs
EPFO’s portal warning applies even when someone offers to “merge” the accounts for you. No legitimate helper needs your one-time password to receive a duplicate-UAN report by email.

Expecting a published deadline
EPFO’s booklet explains the intended result but does not state how many days verification will take. Keep evidence of your report and follow up through official channels if the record remains unresolved.
What should happen after EPFO’s review
Once verification is complete, the expected arrangement is one active UAN containing the Member IDs that belong to your employment history. The earlier UANs should be blocked, while the current UAN remains active. Check that your service and contribution records are associated with that active number and that any transfer claim is reflected correctly.
If the records still show an unrecognized Member ID, treat that as a separate linkage issue and ask EPFO which de-linking route applies. If the Date of Exit remains absent or inaccurate, return to the relevant employer for a record check rather than submitting conflicting dates yourself.
Official information to keep in mind
The account-structure explanation comes from EPFO’s member FAQ, and the duplicate-UAN instruction comes from its employee information booklet listed as a 24 January 2023 resource. EPFO’s transfer FAQ is an older official reference for checking the Date of Exit before an online transfer request. Portal access details, including UMANG and helpdesk 14470, were checked on 9 October 2026 and may change, so use the live EPFO portal for current labels and instructions.

No official EPFO source cited here publishes a prevalence rate for duplicate UANs, a guaranteed processing time or a promise that every case will have the same cause. Your employer records and EPFO’s verification determine the outcome.
