Yes. Starting Social Security retirement benefits before full retirement age does not disqualify you from future cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). The Social Security Administration (SSA) applies a COLA to your primary insurance amount (PIA), then recalculates the benefit using the reduction for claiming early. The reduction remains in the calculation, so a COLA raises an early-claim benefit but does not restore it to the unreduced amount payable at full retirement age.
For 2026, the COLA is 2.8%. That is a dated annual adjustment based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), not a promise about future years.

The short answer: early claimants still receive COLAs
Social Security retirement benefits can begin as early as age 62. If you claim before your full retirement age (FRA), SSA reduces the benefit according to the number of months between your start date and FRA. That early-retirement reduction does not make you ineligible for later COLAs.
When a COLA takes effect, SSA increases the PIA used in the retirement-benefit calculation and repeats the applicable calculation steps. For someone already claiming early, the early-retirement factor is still part of those steps. In practical terms, the adjustment is applied to the benefit formula; it is not a separate payment that cancels the original reduction.

SSA describes the result this way: “A COLA increases a person’s Social Security retirement benefit by approximately the product of the COLA and the benefit amount.” The word “approximately” matters because rounding, offsets and truncation can make the dollar change in a monthly check differ slightly from the headline percentage.
What “claiming early” means
“Early” means starting retirement benefits before your FRA. The exact FRA depends on your birth date. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. Someone in that group who starts at 62 could have a reduction of as much as 30% compared with waiting to FRA. The exact reduction depends on the birth date and the month benefits begin.
That reduction is permanent under the retirement-benefit calculation. A later COLA changes the base amount used in the formula, but it does not erase the months you claimed before FRA. This is why two people who receive the same COLA percentage can have different dollar increases: their underlying benefit amounts and claiming reductions may differ.
How SSA applies a COLA after an early claim
The calculation is easiest to understand as a sequence. SSA begins with the PIA, the unreduced monthly retirement amount determined from a worker’s record at FRA. It then applies the relevant early- or delayed-retirement factor and other applicable calculation rules to determine the payable benefit.
- SSA establishes the PIA. This is the base retirement amount before the claiming-age adjustment.
- A COLA increases the PIA. The adjustment is made when the annual COLA applies, rather than being limited only to people who started benefits at FRA.
- SSA reapplies the claiming factor. If benefits began before FRA, the early-retirement reduction based on the number of months before FRA remains part of the calculation.
- SSA rounds the result and accounts for deductions or offsets. The payable amount can therefore differ by a small amount from a simple multiplication of the old check by the COLA percentage.
This sequence explains the central point: the early claimant gets the COLA, but gets it through a recalculation of a reduced benefit. The adjustment does not convert the benefit into the full FRA amount.

COLAs can count even before you start collecting
COLA eligibility and the date benefits begin are separate parts of the calculation. SSA’s 2025 benefit-computation appendix says retirement COLAs are applied for years after a person reaches age 62 even when that person was not yet receiving benefits.
That rule matters to someone who reaches 62 but waits to claim. The person is not receiving a monthly check during the waiting period, yet the COLA adjustments for the applicable years can still be reflected in the benefit calculation when benefits eventually start. Waiting does not create a special “early-claim bonus”; it simply means the benefit calculation recognizes the COLAs that apply after age 62, along with the factor associated with the eventual claiming date.
Because the exact result depends on the worker’s record, birth date and start month, a general percentage cannot tell you what your eventual monthly amount will be. Use the estimate tied to your own record rather than assuming that every year’s COLA will be identical.
What the 2026 COLA means
The SSA’s 2026 COLA is 2.8%. SSA says it is based on the change in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025. This is the adjustment announced for 2026; it is not a forecast for 2027 or later years.
If you claimed early and remain entitled to retirement benefits, the 2.8% adjustment applies through the same COLA calculation used for other retirement beneficiaries. It does not remove the early-claim reduction. The actual increase in your check can be slightly different from exactly 2.8% because SSA rounds benefit amounts and may account for deductions or offsets.

The 2.8% figure also should not be used to compare claiming ages by itself. Claiming decisions involve the estimated monthly amount at each possible start month, the number of months before FRA, your birth date and how long you expect to rely on the benefit. A single annual adjustment cannot settle that decision.

It is natural to multiply a monthly payment by the COLA percentage and expect the exact result. SSA cautions that the payable amount can differ somewhat. Several parts of the administration process explain why:
- Rounding: Benefit calculations and payment amounts are rounded, so the final increase may not preserve every decimal place from the percentage calculation.
- Offsets: An amount withheld or offset for another obligation can change what reaches your bank account even when the underlying benefit receives the COLA.
- Truncation: SSA’s calculation rules can truncate intermediate amounts before the final payment is established.
- Different starting amounts: A person with an early-claim reduction starts from a different base than a person who waited to FRA, so the same percentage produces a different dollar amount.
These are calculation and payment effects, not evidence that an early claimant was denied the COLA. To verify the result, compare the benefit amount shown in your SSA records before and after the adjustment and distinguish the gross benefit from the amount deposited after deductions.
Early claiming versus waiting: what to compare
If you are deciding when to start, keep the COLA question in proportion. The relevant comparison is not “COLA or no COLA”—eligible retirement benefits continue to receive COLAs. The decision is how the claiming date changes the starting benefit and how subsequent adjustments apply to that amount.
| Decision item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Birth date | It determines your FRA and affects the early-retirement reduction. |
| Benefit start month | SSA uses the number of months before FRA to determine the early-claim factor. |
| Estimated monthly benefit at each start date | This shows the effect of claiming now versus waiting, using your own earnings record. |
| COLA year being discussed | The 2026 adjustment is 2.8%; later years will have their own figures. |
| Gross benefit versus net payment | Deductions and offsets can make the deposited amount differ from the COLA-adjusted benefit. |
For people born in 1960 or later, age 67 is FRA and age 62 is the earliest retirement-claiming age. Starting at 62 can reduce the benefit by as much as 30% relative to waiting to FRA, but the exact result requires the person’s birth date and start month. Those facts are more useful for a claiming decision than treating the 2.8% 2026 COLA as a deciding factor.

How to get an estimate for your own situation
SSA’s personal my Social Security account is the appropriate next step because it uses your earnings record and lets you examine different retirement-age scenarios. The account can help you see how the estimated monthly benefit changes when you select different start dates.
- Sign in to your personal my Social Security account. Use the account associated with your own Social Security record.
- Review the retirement estimate. Confirm that the earnings history shown is yours and note the assumptions used for the estimate.
- Compare possible start dates. Look at the estimate for the earliest date you are considering and at later dates, including FRA when shown.
- Record the month and age for each estimate. The month matters because the early-retirement reduction is based on the months before FRA.
- Separate the COLA question from the claiming question. Apply the known 2026 COLA only as a dated adjustment; do not assume that future annual percentages will match it.
An online estimate cannot tell you every personal planning consideration, but it is more reliable than applying a generic percentage to someone else’s example. If your earnings record is incomplete or incorrect, resolve that issue with SSA before relying on the estimate.
Common misunderstandings
“If I claim at 62, I lose all future COLAs.”
False. Early claimants remain eligible for COLAs. The adjustment is applied to the PIA and the benefit is recalculated with the early-claim factor still in place.
“The COLA puts my check back at the FRA amount.”
False. The early-retirement reduction remains part of the calculation. A COLA raises the reduced benefit; it does not undo the months claimed before FRA.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Every check rises by exactly the announced percentage.”
Not necessarily. SSA identifies rounding, offsets and truncation as reasons the final monthly change can differ somewhat from the headline percentage.

“If I wait after 62, I receive no COLA until I file.”
That is too broad. SSA’s benefit-computation guidance says retirement COLAs are applied for years after age 62 even when the worker was not yet receiving benefits. The eventual calculation still depends on the person’s record and claiming date.
“The 2026 COLA predicts future adjustments.”
No. The 2.8% figure is specifically the 2026 adjustment, calculated from the stated CPI-W period. Future COLAs depend on future inflation measurements.
What the evidence does—and does not—tell you
The rules establish eligibility and the calculation method, but they do not produce one universal dollar answer. Two early claimants can have different PIAs, different birth dates, different start months and different deductions. Their COLA percentages can be the same while their dollar increases differ.
The practical conclusion is therefore precise: claiming before FRA does not forfeit COLAs, and waiting after age 62 does not necessarily mean those years’ COLAs disappear from the eventual calculation. The early-claim reduction and the COLA operate in the same broader benefit calculation, but they are separate concepts. Your own SSA estimate is the source to use when deciding what a particular start month would pay.
