Can You Earn Discover 5% Cash Back on Streaming, Restaurants and Utility Bills in 2026?

Not all three at the same time. Discover’s calendar for October 1 through December 31, 2026 lists restaurants and utilities (along with entertainment) for its activated 5% rotating-category offer. Select streaming services were a bonus category only from January 1 through March 31, 2026, and that quarter has ended. Discover also says standalone streaming subscriptions may not qualify as utilities, so a current utility payment should not be assumed to earn 5% merely because it is a streaming bill.

What earns 5% in the current quarter?

Discover’s 2026 calendar, checked October 9, 2026, separates the categories by quarter. For October–December, the listed categories are restaurants, entertainment and utilities. Streaming services appeared in the January–March calendar instead. Therefore, a cardmember can earn 5% on qualifying restaurant and utility purchases now, but cannot treat streaming as a current standalone 5% category.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Spending type Discover calendar period What the calendar says
Restaurants October 1–December 31, 2026 Eligible merchants include full-service restaurants, cafés, cafeterias, fast-food locations and caterers, subject to merchant coding.
Utilities October 1–December 31, 2026 Residential electricity, natural gas and water, plus certain online or telephone payments for internet, cable, satellite TV and mobile or landline phone service.
Select streaming services January 1–March 31, 2026 Listed as a first-quarter category; the period ended March 31. Bundled and third-party-billed subscriptions could be excluded.

The 5% rate is not an automatic rate on every purchase that sounds like one of these categories. You must activate the quarterly offer, use an eligible Discover account, buy from a U.S. merchant, and stay within the quarterly category limit.

How the streaming category worked—and why it is not current

For January through March 2026, Discover listed grocery stores, wholesale clubs and select streaming services. Examples named in the calendar included Amazon Music, Amazon Prime Video, AMC+, Apple Music, Apple TV, Audible, DirecTV Stream, Fandango at Home, Google Play Music and Video, Max, iHeartRadio, MLB.TV, Netflix, Pandora, Paramount Plus, Peacock, SiriusXM, Sling TV, Spotify, Starz, YouTube Music, YouTube Premium and YouTube TV. Discover said other popular services might be included, but the examples were not a guarantee that every subscription would qualify.

That quarter ended March 31, 2026. The October–December utilities footnote specifically warns that standalone streaming services may not qualify under utilities. A subscription therefore does not become eligible simply because you pay it online or because it appears alongside other household bills.

Streaming arrangements that could fail to qualify

  • A subscription bundled with another product or service may not be identified as a qualifying streaming transaction.
  • Billing through a digital platform, cable or satellite provider, telecommunications provider, internet provider or car manufacturer may change the merchant classification.
  • Add-ons can be excluded when they are unlisted, bundled, separately billed or charged through a third party.

If a future Discover quarter lists streaming again, check the calendar’s named services and exclusions before moving a subscription. For the current quarter, do not budget for a 5% streaming reward.

Which restaurant purchases qualify?

Discover defines the current restaurant category by the merchant’s classification. Full-service restaurants, cafés, cafeterias, fast-food locations and caterers are the stated types. The description you use for a business is less important than the merchant category code (MCC) sent with the transaction.

Restaurant situations that may be excluded

  • A restaurant located inside or affiliated with a hotel or retail store may be coded to the larger business rather than to a restaurant category.
  • A bakery may not qualify even when it sells prepared food, because Discover lists bakeries as a possible exclusion.
  • A payment routed through an intermediary can carry a code that does not match the restaurant where you ate.

Because coding controls the reward, a café purchase that looks eligible at the counter can still miss the bonus. Keep the receipt and review the posted transaction if the 5% does not appear.

What Discover counts as a utility

The October–December utility category covers residential electricity, natural gas and water service. Discover also includes certain payments made online or by phone for internet, cable, satellite television, and mobile or landline phone service.

Payment routes and services that may be excluded

  • An in-store purchase at a physical retail location for an internet, cable, satellite-TV or phone service is not the listed online-or-phone utility payment.
  • A payment sent through a landlord, property manager or homeowners association may not identify the actual utility provider and may not qualify.
  • Home-fuel delivery, standalone streaming, some satellite phone and satellite internet services, vehicle connectivity, accessories and equipment may be outside the category.

Paying a utility bill with a debit card, a third-party bill-pay service or a digital wallet does not guarantee the same coding as paying the provider directly. The transaction must still arrive with a qualifying merchant code and enough detail for Discover to identify it.

Activation, the quarterly cap and the maximum reward

The offer is for Discover it and Discover More cardmembers covered by the calendar. Activation is required each quarter. Once activated, the 5% rate applies to up to $1,500 in combined purchases in the listed category or categories during that quarter. At the full limit, the bonus rate can produce up to $75 in cash back.

Requirement or limit How it affects your reward
Activation Activate the quarter’s offer before relying on the bonus.
Eligible category purchases Only purchases coded to the quarter’s listed categories receive the 5% rate.
Quarterly spending limit The 5% category rate applies to the first $1,500 in qualifying purchases.
Maximum at 5% Up to $75 in cash back for $1,500 of qualifying purchases.
Purchases above the limit Additional spending earns the card’s ordinary rewards rate under the applicable program terms.

Activation does not retroactively convert earlier transactions into bonus purchases. Check that the offer shows as activated before paying a large bill or making a planned restaurant purchase.

Why an apparently eligible purchase can miss the 5%

Discover states: “Even if a purchase appears to fit in a 5% category, the merchant may not have a merchant category code (MCC) in that category.” Merchants and payment processors receive MCCs based on the products and services they typically provide; Discover does not assign those codes. The code sent with the transaction, not the name on a menu or bill, determines category treatment.

Third-party payment accounts and digital-wallet transactions can create another problem. Discover says some may not provide enough transaction detail or a qualifying MCC for the bonus. This is why two payments for similar services can receive different results when one is made directly to the provider and the other is routed through an intermediary.

A practical way to reduce coding surprises

  1. Activate the quarter in your Discover account.
  2. For utilities, pay the provider directly online or by phone when the provider is one of the listed services.
  3. For restaurants, use the merchant’s own payment channel rather than a general-purpose bill-pay intermediary when possible.
  4. Keep confirmation emails and receipts until the transaction posts and the reward is visible.
  5. If a transaction appears misclassified, review the merchant name and posted date, then contact Discover using the number on your card.

Timing, location and how rewards post

Purchases must be made with merchants in the United States, and the transaction date must fall on or before the promotion’s final day. For an online purchase, Discover says the merchant’s transaction date may be the date an item ships rather than the date you click “buy.” A bill paid on December 31 could therefore post under a different date if the merchant processes it later.

Discover says rewards are added within two billing periods. Do not treat a missing reward immediately after a purchase as proof of permanent ineligibility; first allow the stated posting window, then check the category, activation status and transaction details.

Which Discover accounts are covered?

The calendar identifies Discover it and Discover More cardmembers as eligible audiences. It also warns that the calendar page may not apply to some Discover cards managed through Capital One-branded channels as the companies combine following Discover Bank’s merger into Capital One. If your account is managed through a Capital One-branded app or website, use the benefits shown for that account or call the number on the card instead of assuming the general calendar applies.

Worked examples using the current terms

These examples show the arithmetic of the offer; the actual result still depends on activation and merchant coding.

Hypothetical purchase Potential treatment Reason
$100 at a coded full-service restaurant in November $5 at the 5% rate, if the quarterly cap has room Restaurants are listed for October–December and the transaction is within the $1,500 limit.
$200 residential electricity payment made directly online in October $10 at the 5% rate, if coded as an eligible utility Residential electricity is expressly included.
$15 standalone streaming subscription in November No current-quarter 5% assumption Streaming was a January–March category, and the current utility footnote says standalone streaming may not qualify.
$80 cable bill paid through a listed online payment channel Potentially $4 at the 5% rate, if the merchant and route qualify Certain online or phone cable payments are included, but coding and payment details control.
$1,600 of otherwise eligible restaurant and utility purchases in the quarter Up to $75 at 5%; the remaining $100 follows the ordinary rewards terms The 5% category limit is $1,500 per quarter.

A checklist before you count on the bonus

  • Confirm that your account is a covered Discover it or Discover More card and that its account page displays the offer.
  • Activate the October–December 2026 categories.
  • Track combined restaurant and utility purchases toward the $1,500 cap.
  • For utilities, distinguish direct residential service payments from landlord, property-manager or homeowners-association payments.
  • Do not classify standalone streaming as a current utility expense.
  • Expect merchant coding to decide borderline restaurant and service transactions.
  • Allow up to two billing periods for rewards to appear.

The useful answer to the title question is therefore quarter-specific: restaurants and qualifying utilities can earn Discover’s 5% rate in the October–December 2026 quarter after activation, while the select streaming category was available only in January–March. Treat every purchase as conditional on the merchant code, payment route, U.S. location and quarterly cap rather than on the service’s everyday description.
