Yes. In the United States, you can earn Starbucks Stars and your credit card’s points, miles or cash back from the same qualifying purchase. At a participating café, scan your Starbucks Rewards barcode before paying with the credit card. For an order placed in the Starbucks app, pay with a linked credit card. The two rewards programs are separate, so receiving Stars does not guarantee that your card will receive a bonus-category rate.
The details below reflect Starbucks Rewards Terms of Use effective March 10, 2026, and the card-eligibility principles described by Chase. Starbucks locations, member tiers and issuer rules can change, and the result is not established for every country or every individual card.

How the two rewards programs work together
Starbucks tracks Stars through your Starbucks Rewards membership. Your card issuer tracks card rewards through the payment transaction. When both systems recognize the same eligible purchase, each can award its own reward independently.
For example, a qualifying $8 drink and food order could produce Starbucks Stars under your current Starbucks tier while the card issuer separately awards its applicable base rate or bonus rate. Starbucks does not control the card’s reward calculation, and the card issuer does not control whether Starbucks credits Stars.

That separation explains why a purchase can earn both rewards, neither reward, or only one. Starbucks must recognize an eligible member purchase at a participating location, while the issuer must recognize an eligible card transaction under its own terms and merchant coding.
The two payment methods Starbucks lists for earning Stars with a credit card
Pay at the café after scanning your membership barcode
- Open the Starbucks app and display your Starbucks Rewards member barcode.
- Have the barista scan the barcode before you pay.
- Pay the order with your credit card.
Starbucks expressly describes scanning in the app and then paying with a credit card as an earning method. Scanning after the transaction, or forgetting to identify your membership, can leave the purchase unassociated with your account.
Pay for an app order with a linked credit card
- Open the Starbucks app and start the order.
- Choose a credit card that you have linked as the payment method.
- Submit the mobile order through the app.
Starbucks lists payment with a linked credit card in the app as eligible. This is different from guest checkout: the terms say guest-checkout purchases do not earn Stars.
Current Starbucks Stars rates
Under the U.S. Starbucks Rewards Terms of Use effective March 10, 2026, the published earning rates are:

These are Starbucks rates, not credit-card rates. A $10 qualifying purchase would therefore be calculated at 10 Stars for a Green member, 12 Stars for a Gold member and 17 Stars for a Reserve member under those published rates. Those examples show the arithmetic only; the purchase still has to satisfy Starbucks’ location and transaction rules.

Before you pay: confirm that the Starbucks transaction qualifies
Scanning a membership barcode does not make every Starbucks charge eligible. Check each of these conditions when the earning result matters.
The store must participate
Starbucks limits Stars to participating locations. A store can carry Starbucks branding yet have different program participation or payment handling, so check the location in the app or ask at the register if you are unsure.
Some stores may restrict the payment method for Stars
Starbucks cautions that some participating stores may award Stars only for Starbucks Card transactions rather than credit-card transactions. Consequently, the general U.S. rule that permits scanning and paying by credit card is not a promise that every participating location will handle the transaction identically.
The purchase cannot be an excluded transaction
The terms exclude purchases of Starbucks Cards, including activations and reloads. They also say that taxes, tips, donations and certain fees may be excluded from the amount used to calculate Stars. Alcohol purchases are excluded as well.
This distinction matters: buying or reloading a Starbucks Card is not the same as buying a beverage or meal with an eligible payment method. Do not assume that putting money on a Starbucks Card earns Stars merely because that balance may later be used at a café.

You must identify yourself as a member
Guest checkout purchases do not earn Stars. At the register, scan before payment. For an app order, sign in to the account connected to your Rewards membership and use the linked card rather than checking out as a guest.

Your issuer determines the card reward, not Starbucks. A card may award a base rate on an eligible purchase, a higher rate for a qualifying category, or no rewards when the charge is excluded under the card agreement.
Chase explains that Visa and Mastercard merchants are assigned a merchant code by the merchant or payment processor. The code can determine whether a transaction qualifies for a category bonus. A Starbucks purchase that looks like “dining” to you may be coded differently, depending on the location, processor or transaction path.
Payment routing can also matter. The issuer guidance notes that some third-party payment or digital-wallet processing may affect bonus-category treatment. That does not mean a wallet transaction will always lose a bonus; it means you should not infer the result from the store name alone.
Questions to check in your card agreement
- What is the card’s ordinary earning rate for purchases?
- Does the card define restaurants, cafés or another category that could include this merchant code?
- Are mobile-app, digital-wallet or other intermediary transactions treated differently?
- Are there exclusions for prepaid products, stored-value purchases or similar transactions?
- Does an issuer promotion require activation, a spending window or a specific payment channel?
Without the exact card, issuer and transaction coding, no one can promise a particular number of points, miles or cash back. The Starbucks Star result and the card-reward result must be evaluated separately.

A practical decision framework for maximizing both rewards
Use the following sequence whenever you place an order.
- Confirm the location. Verify that the café participates in Starbucks Rewards and ask whether it accepts credit-card payment for Stars if the location’s policy is unclear.
- Confirm the order type. Avoid guest checkout, and remember that alcohol, Starbucks Card activations and reloads, taxes, tips, donations and certain fees may not earn Stars.
- Choose the Starbucks identification method. At the counter, scan the app barcode before paying. In the app, remain signed in to the correct Rewards account.
- Choose the payment path. For in-store purchases, pay with the credit card after the barcode scan. For mobile orders, select the linked credit card.
- Check the card’s category rules. Review the issuer’s current terms rather than assuming that every Starbucks charge receives a dining or coffee-shop bonus.
- Keep the receipt or order record. It helps you investigate if Stars or card rewards are missing, and it documents the transaction if a return later reverses rewards.

The table describes the rules, not a guarantee that a particular issuer will approve or deny a bonus category. The card’s current agreement controls that side of the transaction.

If Starbucks Stars are missing
- Check that you were signed in to the intended Starbucks Rewards account.
- For an in-store purchase, confirm that the barcode was scanned before payment.
- Verify that the store participates and does not limit Stars to Starbucks Card transactions.
- Review the receipt for an excluded item, tax, tip, donation or fee.
- Check whether the order was processed as guest checkout.
- Keep the receipt and order details available when contacting Starbucks support through its current official channels.
Do not assume a missing Star means the credit-card payment failed. The card transaction and the Starbucks membership record are separate systems.
If the card reward is missing
- Review the issuer’s posted transaction description and merchant category.
- Check whether the card’s bonus requires activation or has a spending cap.
- Determine whether a mobile wallet or other intermediary changed the way the transaction was coded.
- Look for issuer exclusions covering stored value, prepaid products or specific transaction types.
- Ask the issuer how it classified the charge; Starbucks cannot change the issuer’s reward decision.
A card issuer may post rewards on its own schedule, so compare the transaction against the card’s terms before concluding that the purchase was rejected.

Returns, voids and reward reversals
When an eligible Starbucks purchase is voided or returned, Starbucks may deduct the associated Stars. The terms allow the account to show a negative Star balance after an adjustment. That is a Starbucks-side reversal and does not establish what will happen to the credit-card reward.

Any reversal of points, miles or cash back is controlled by the card issuer’s rules. Issuers do not all use the same adjustment policy, so check the specific card agreement and transaction history after a refund.
How to decide which payment method is best
If your goal is to earn Stars and card rewards together, the preferred method is the one that satisfies both programs: identify your Starbucks membership, use a participating location, pay with an eligible credit card and avoid excluded transaction types.
There is no universal “best card” or universal winner between paying directly and using another route. Compare these four facts for your own purchase:

- Your card’s base rate and any applicable category rate.
- The merchant code and payment processing path used for the transaction.
A card with a nominally higher restaurant rate may not outperform another card if the Starbucks charge receives a different merchant code. Conversely, a card’s base rewards may still be valuable even when no category bonus applies. Make the comparison using the issuer’s current terms and your actual transaction path rather than the retailer’s name alone.

This explanation is limited to Starbucks Rewards in the United States under terms effective March 10, 2026. It does not establish the rules for Starbucks programs in other countries or for every participating location. Starbucks can change tiers, earning rates, exclusions and participating-store rules, while card issuers can change reward categories, merchant-code treatment and exclusions.
Before relying on a particular rate, review the current Starbucks Rewards Terms of Use and the current agreement for your credit card. The durable answer is that the programs can stack on one qualifying U.S. purchase, but each program applies its own eligibility test.
