Possibly—but “booking through ChatGPT” is not one transaction type. ChatGPT may only help you research a trip, send you to an airline or travel agency, or participate in a checkout handled by a merchant. Airline miles depend on the airline, loyalty program and fare. Credit-card rewards depend on the card issuer’s current terms and the merchant that actually submits the charge. Identify the payment path and fare before assuming either benefit.
What “booking through ChatGPT” can mean
The words describe a conversation, not necessarily a ticketing system. Your rewards outcome changes depending on what happens after ChatGPT finds an itinerary.

When a flight earns airline miles
Airline miles are attached to the ticket and the loyalty program, not to the conversational tool used to find it. Before paying, identify the operating or selling airline, the exact fare and the frequent-flyer program in which you want credit. The program’s current rules determine whether that fare qualifies and how the credit is calculated.
Check the fare before you buy
Low or specially constructed fares can have restrictions that ordinary economy tickets do not. A third-party site may display a flight while imposing its own fare labels, and the airline may apply different earning rules to that fare than to a ticket bought directly. Read the fare conditions shown before payment and save the confirmation page or receipt.

Enter your loyalty number in the booking flow
If the checkout offers a frequent-flyer field, enter the number exactly as it appears in your account. If there is no field, note the ticket number and booking reference so you can add the number through the airline’s “manage booking” page or request credit later. A ChatGPT conversation does not automatically connect to an airline loyalty account.
Expedia Bargain Fares are a documented exception
Expedia’s U.S. Terms of Service, revised August 10, 2026, describe Expedia Bargain Fares as having specific limitations. The terms state: “Generally, these tickets are subject to certain limitations, including no upgrades, no eligibility to fly standby on other flights, and no opportunity to earn frequent flyer miles.” That statement applies to the Bargain Fare section; it is not a rule that all Expedia flights or all tickets found with ChatGPT forfeit miles. Read the U.S. terms at Expedia’s Terms of Service, and check the fare conditions for your itinerary and country.

Do not confuse earning miles with spending miles
The same Expedia terms say that air miles and loyalty vouchers cannot be used to pay for flights through its service. That is a redemption restriction. It does not answer whether a paid ticket earns miles. Keep these questions separate: “Can I pay with loyalty currency?” and “Will this paid fare post to my account?”
When a flight earns credit-card rewards
Card rewards are a separate decision from airline-mile eligibility. The card issuer evaluates the posted purchase under its current rewards agreement. The important question is not whether ChatGPT suggested the itinerary, but who submitted the charge and how the transaction is identified in the issuer’s systems.

Find the actual payment recipient
Look for the merchant name, billing descriptor and currency on the final review screen and confirmation email. A direct airline purchase, an online travel agency purchase and an agency booking in which the airline collects payment can appear differently on your statement. Expedia Group’s 2024 Form 10-K describes both merchant and agency models, which is why you cannot infer the payment arrangement solely from the fact that a third party helped locate the flight. The filing is available through the SEC.
Read the card’s current earning terms
Review the rewards agreement, benefit guide and any current category exclusions for the specific card and country. The available material does not establish a universal airfare bonus category or guarantee that a hypothetical ChatGPT flight charge would qualify. Issuers can define eligible purchases by merchant category, transaction type, booking channel, currency or other conditions. A promotion may also have an enrollment requirement, cap or expiration date.

Separate points from travel protections
A card may offer travel insurance, cancellation coverage or other benefits under rules different from its points program. Those protections do not prove that the airfare earns bonus points. Check each benefit independently, including requirements about paying the full fare with the card and booking through an eligible provider.

Before-payment checklist
- Identify the final checkout. Confirm whether you remain in ChatGPT, open an airline site, or are sent to a travel provider. Record the URL and provider name.
- Review the itinerary and fare conditions. Check the airline, marketing and operating carriers, cabin, change or cancellation restrictions and any special-fare label. Save a copy of the conditions.
- Check mileage eligibility. Open the airline or loyalty program’s terms for that fare and route. If the seller labels the ticket as a bargain, bulk, consolidator or otherwise restricted fare, ask the seller or airline directly before paying.
- Add your frequent-flyer number. Use the booking field when available. Verify that the number appears on the passenger record or confirmation.
- Confirm who charges your card. Note the legal seller, billing descriptor, currency and whether the amount is collected immediately or by the airline later.
- Check your card terms. Look up the card’s current airfare or travel language, exclusions, caps, enrollment requirements and foreign-transaction rules. Do not rely on a generic statement that “travel earns points.”
- Save evidence. Keep the receipt, fare rules, ticket number, loyalty number and a screenshot of the payment descriptor until both the airline miles and card rewards post.
What to do if the miles or rewards do not appear
Airline miles are missing
- Wait for the program’s stated posting period, then compare the ticket number, passenger name and loyalty number with your account.
- Use the airline program’s missing-mile claim form and attach the e-ticket receipt and boarding-pass record if requested.
- If the fare was sold as a restricted or bargain product, ask the seller or airline to confirm in writing whether it is excluded. An ineligible fare cannot be made eligible by the fact that ChatGPT helped find it.
Card rewards are missing
- Check that the charge has posted rather than remaining pending, and inspect the exact merchant descriptor.
- Compare the posted transaction with the card issuer’s rewards terms, including category definitions, exclusions, caps and promotional enrollment rules.
- Contact the issuer with the receipt and transaction details if the purchase appears eligible but rewards were not credited. A refund, partial cancellation or reissued ticket can change the final earning amount.
The charge or ticket is not what you expected
Contact the company named on the confirmation and your card issuer promptly. A ChatGPT conversation may not be the contracting seller, so direct disputes, refunds and itinerary changes normally go to the airline or travel provider shown on the receipt.

The practical answer
You may earn both airline miles and card rewards on a ChatGPT-assisted flight, but neither benefit is guaranteed by using ChatGPT. Treat the conversation as a way to discover or initiate a booking. The airline loyalty program decides whether the ticket earns miles; the card issuer decides whether the resulting charge earns rewards. The only reliable answer for a particular trip comes from the fare conditions, the final payment recipient and the current terms of those two programs.
