Yes. You can generally claim a Social Security spousal retirement benefit while your spouse continues working. The key distinction is whether your spouse has filed for retirement benefits, not whether the paycheck has stopped. For an age-based spousal benefit, the worker generally must be receiving retirement benefits on the record you are claiming against.
Your age, full retirement age, own Social Security entitlement, and your own earnings can change the amount you receive. Your spouse’s wages alone do not automatically reduce your payment.

Working is not the same as filing
Social Security treats employment and benefit filing as separate events. A worker can keep a job, earn wages, and still file for retirement benefits. Once the worker is receiving retirement benefits, a current spouse may generally qualify for an age-based spousal benefit if the other requirements are met. The Social Security Administration (SSA) explains the filing rule in its Filing Rules for Retirement and Spouses Benefits.

Confirm the filing status directly rather than assuming that employment means benefits have not begun. A working spouse may already have filed, or may file while remaining employed.

Who can qualify for a spousal benefit?
Age 62 is the usual minimum
For an age-based benefit, the claimant generally must be at least 62. Starting before full retirement age usually permanently reduces the monthly spousal amount. Your full retirement age depends on your birth year; for people attaining age 62 in 2026, it is 67. SSA provides the birth-year schedule in What is full retirement age?.
An exception for caring for a qualifying child
SSA recognizes an age exception when the spouse is caring for a qualifying child under 16 or a child who receives Social Security disability benefits. This child-in-care rule is different from the ordinary age-62 route, so ask SSA to evaluate the specific child and family circumstances before relying on it.
The worker generally must be receiving retirement benefits
For a current spouse’s age-based claim, the worker’s retirement benefit generally must have begun. Continuing to work does not disqualify the worker, but delaying the filing generally means an age-based spousal payment cannot begin on that record. The SSA’s Benefits for Spouses page describes the basic eligibility and amount rules.

| Checkpoint | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Worker’s status | Has your spouse filed for and begun receiving retirement benefits? | Employment can continue, but the filing generally must have occurred for an age-based spousal claim. |
| Your age | Are you at least 62, or do you meet the child-in-care exception? | Claiming before full retirement age generally reduces the amount. |
| Your full retirement age | Use your birth year, not your spouse’s, to determine it. | The reduction rules and earnings-test timing depend on your full retirement age. |
| Your own benefit | Do you have a retirement benefit based on your work record? | SSA coordinates the two entitlements and may require deemed filing. |
How much can a spousal benefit pay?
At your full retirement age, the maximum age-based spousal amount is generally up to one-half of the worker’s primary insurance amount (PIA), the worker’s benefit at full retirement age. It is not automatically one-half of whatever check your spouse currently receives, and it is not a second full retirement benefit added to your own.
Claiming the spousal amount before your full retirement age generally reduces it. The child-in-care exception is not subject to that age-based reduction in the same way. Because the exact reduction depends on your birth date and start date, use SSA’s calculation rather than applying a generic percentage.
If your spouse delayed filing beyond full retirement age, do not assume that delay changes the basic one-half-PIA ceiling for a spousal benefit. Have SSA calculate the amount using both records and the intended start dates.

Your own retirement benefit is coordinated with the spousal amount
SSA normally pays your own retirement benefit first and then adds only the amount needed to bring your total up to the applicable spousal level. It does not ordinarily pay a full retirement benefit on your record plus a full spousal benefit on your spouse’s record.
For example, suppose your unreduced own benefit at the relevant age is $700 and the applicable spousal total is $1,000. The result would generally be your $700 own benefit plus a $300 spousal supplement, for $1,000 total. If your own benefit is already $1,000 or more, there may be no spousal supplement. Those figures are an illustration of the coordination method, not an estimate of any individual claim.
Deemed filing can prevent a spousal-only choice
If you are eligible for both your own retirement benefit and a spousal benefit, deemed-filing rules generally require people born on or after January 2, 1954, to apply for both at the same time. SSA has specific exceptions, so the birth-date rule is not a substitute for a case-specific determination. The agency explains the current rule in Can I apply only for spouse’s benefits and delay filing for my own retirement benefit?.

This matters if your goal is to let your own benefit grow by delaying it while collecting only a spousal amount. That strategy is not universally available. Before filing, establish whether deemed filing applies to you and whether an exception fits your circumstances.
Your own earnings can reduce payments before full retirement age
The retirement earnings test applies to the beneficiary’s own earnings. Your spouse’s continued wages do not, by themselves, trigger a reduction in your spousal benefit. If you work while receiving benefits, SSA looks at your earnings and your full-retirement-age timing.
For 2026, SSA lists these thresholds in its 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment Fact Sheet and Receiving Benefits While Working guidance:

| Your situation in 2026 | Earnings limit | General withholding rule |
|---|---|---|
| Under full retirement age for the entire year | $24,480 for the year | SSA generally withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 you earn above the limit. |
| Reaching full retirement age during the year | $65,160, counting earnings before the month you reach full retirement age | SSA generally withholds $1 for every $3 earned above the limit during that pre-full-retirement-age period. |
| Beginning with the month you reach full retirement age | No earnings limit | Earnings no longer reduce benefits under the retirement earnings test. |
These dollar limits are SSA’s 2026 figures and can change in a later year. The test concerns earnings from work, not simply household income or your spouse’s salary. When benefits are withheld because of excess earnings, SSA says the withheld amounts are accounted for when you reach full retirement age; withholding is not necessarily a permanent dollar-for-dollar loss.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the main claiming paths
| Path | What must be true | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Claim an age-based spousal benefit before full retirement age | Your spouse has filed, you meet the age requirement, and you are otherwise eligible. | The spousal amount is generally reduced, and your own earnings may trigger the earnings test. |
| Claim at full retirement age | Your spouse has filed and you meet your full-retirement-age rules. | You avoid the early-claim reduction that applies before full retirement age, but the household starts benefits later than an early claim. |
| Claim while caring for a qualifying child | You meet SSA’s child-under-16 or disability-benefit child condition. | The child-in-care rules and payment duration require an individual SSA determination. |
| Apply for both own and spousal entitlements | You qualify on both records and deemed filing applies, or you choose to file for both. | You generally cannot preserve a spousal-only claim in order to delay your own benefit when deemed filing requires both. |
| Wait because the worker has not filed | Your spouse continues working and has not begun retirement benefits. | An age-based spousal benefit generally cannot start on that record until the worker’s filing requirement is met. |
The best start date depends on both spouses’ ages, full retirement ages, estimated benefits, work earnings, tax and cash-flow needs, and the intended household timing. There is no universally optimal date that can be selected from the spousal rule alone.
How to check your situation before applying
- Confirm the worker’s filing status. Ask whether your spouse has actually filed for retirement benefits and when payments began. A current paycheck does not answer that question.
- Identify your full retirement age. Use your birth year and SSA’s schedule. Record the month you reach that age because the earnings-test rules change in that month.
- Check the child-in-care possibility. If you care for a child under 16 or a child receiving Social Security disability benefits, ask SSA whether the exception applies to your record.
- Gather both benefit estimates. Sign in to a my Social Security account. SSA’s retirement calculator can show a worker’s estimate at full retirement age and estimate a current or former spouse’s potential benefit using the spouse’s birth date and intended start age.
- Compare your own benefit with the spousal total. Determine whether your own entitlement is below, equal to, or above the applicable spousal amount. Expect SSA to coordinate the payments rather than issue two full checks.
- Project your work earnings for the claim year. If you will be below full retirement age, compare your expected wages with the 2026 limits of $24,480 or, in the year you reach full retirement age, $65,160 for earnings counted before that month.
- Ask about deemed filing before submitting an application. If you were born on or after January 2, 1954 and qualify on both records, determine whether you must claim both or whether an SSA exception applies.
- Have SSA calculate the actual amount. Provide your birth date, your spouse’s filing date, both earnings records, expected wages, and the requested start month. Those details determine the payable amount and any withholding.
Common mistakes that change the answer
- Assuming a working spouse cannot have filed: Employment can continue after retirement benefits begin.
- Assuming the spouse’s wages reduce your check: The earnings test generally examines the beneficiary’s own work earnings.
- Using one-half of the current check as a guaranteed amount: The ceiling is generally tied to one-half of the worker’s PIA, and your early-claim reduction and own benefit affect the result.
- Claiming early without pricing the reduction: Starting before full retirement age usually lowers the age-based spousal amount.
- Planning to take spousal-only benefits automatically: Deemed filing may require a combined application for people born on or after January 2, 1954 who qualify on both records.
- Applying a 2026 limit forever: The $24,480 and $65,160 thresholds are SSA’s 2026 figures; check the limits for the year in which you claim.
What this means for a household decision
The short answer is yes, a spouse may claim while the worker remains employed, but only after separating three questions: has the worker filed, is the claimant eligible at the intended age or through the child-in-care rule, and how will the claimant’s own benefit and earnings affect the payment? The worker’s job alone is not the disqualifier. Filing status, birth dates, benefit records, and the claimant’s own wages determine the practical result.
