No. Losing or damaging the physical PAN card does not make you eligible for another PAN number. Request a reprint carrying your existing ten-digit PAN. The Income Tax Department’s Instant e-PAN service is for eligible people who have never been allotted a PAN, not for replacing an existing holder’s missing card.
What to do when your PAN card is lost or damaged
A PAN card is only the physical or electronic representation of your Permanent Account Number. The number remains allotted to you even when the card is lost, destroyed, faded, or otherwise unusable. The correct remedy is therefore a replacement or reprint of the existing card, not a fresh PAN application.

Applying for another allotment can create duplicate-PAN records. The instructions for Form 49A state: “Those already allotted a ten digit alphanumeric PAN shall not apply again as having or using more than one PAN is illegal.” A damaged card does not change that rule.

Choose the correct service route
The right application depends on whether your existing PAN details are correct, which organization processed your latest PAN application, and whether the department already has a mobile number or email address for one-time-password verification.

How the separate online reprint service works
Protean’s separate reprint facility is designed for a card whose existing PAN data does not need updating. The provider’s guideline says that, after successful submission, the card is printed with the existing PAN details available in its records. Because the service is a no-change reprint, do not use it to alter a spelling, address, photograph, signature, or any other field.
Check eligibility before starting
- Your latest PAN application must have been processed through Protean or the Income Tax Department e-Filing portal.
- A mobile number or email address must already be present in the Income Tax Department PAN database so that you can receive the OTP.
- You must be asking for a reprint of the current record, not a correction to it.
The separate link is not available when the latest application was processed by UTIITSL or another provider. In that situation, use the PAN Change Request form route or the authorized service provider connected with your PAN record instead.
Step-by-step process
- Open the current reprint application page from an authorized PAN service provider.
- Select the option for reprinting an existing PAN card rather than applying for a new PAN or changing PAN data.
- Enter the requested PAN and identity details exactly as they appear in the existing record.
- Choose the mobile-number or email OTP option that matches a contact already recorded in the Income Tax Department PAN database.
- Complete the OTP verification and review the displayed details carefully. A successful no-change reprint will reproduce those details; it is not an opportunity to edit them.
- Confirm the communication address and delivery destination.
- Pay the fee shown on the authorized page, submit the application, and retain the acknowledgement or transaction reference.
If the system rejects the request because your latest application was handled by a different provider, because no OTP contact is available, or because the details do not match, stop using the separate link. Repeated attempts do not create a new eligibility category; move to the fallback form route.

Published reprint fees and delivery destinations
Protean’s fee FAQ listed the following amounts when checked on October 13, 2026. They are service fees for the separate reprint facility, inclusive of taxes, and depend on the communication address:

Fees and routing rules can change. Verify the amount on the authorized application page immediately before payment, especially if your application is submitted after October 13, 2026.
What to do if the quick reprint link is unavailable
The separate online facility is intentionally narrow. If your latest PAN application was processed by UTIITSL or another provider, or the database lacks a mobile number and email address for OTP, Protean identifies the PAN Change Request form as the alternative. The Income Tax Department also identifies Protean and UTIITSL as physical-card service routes.

- Choose the option for an existing PAN and a physical-card request, rather than a fresh allotment.
- Enter your current PAN and identity information.
- Mark only the fields that genuinely require correction. If no data has changed, make clear that the purpose is a reprint or replacement of the existing card.
- Follow the provider’s identity-verification, document, photograph, signature, payment, and dispatch instructions shown for your case.
- Keep the acknowledgement number so you can track the application or respond to a service query.
The form route is also the appropriate path when the card is lost and your underlying data needs correction. Do not submit a second new-PAN application simply because the quick reprint page is unavailable.

If you have forgotten your PAN number
Not knowing the number does not mean you are eligible for a new one. Use the Income Tax Department’s PAN lookup or verification services to recover or check the existing number. Those services distinguish between finding an existing PAN and applying for first-time allotment.
Practical checks before applying
- Search older income-tax, bank, investment, salary, loan, or account-opening records where your PAN may have been recorded.
- Use the department’s official lookup or verification function rather than guessing the number.
- Once the number is confirmed, select the reprint or correction route that matches your record.
A guessed or mistyped PAN can cause a failed OTP match, incorrect application details, or a card printed with information that does not belong to you. Confirm the number first.
When a correction application is required
A no-change reprint is not suitable when the PAN database itself needs updating. Use the correction/change request route if your name, address, photograph, signature, or another PAN detail is inaccurate or has changed.
Examples
- Name: The card has a spelling error or your legal name has changed.
- Address: You need the communication address or another recorded address updated.
- Photograph or signature: The existing image is incorrect, unusable, or no longer appropriate for your records.
- Other PAN data: Any field requiring an alteration should be handled through the change-request process rather than the no-change reprint link.
Requesting a correction does not create a different PAN. The purpose is to update the existing record and issue a card reflecting the approved information.

Why Instant e-PAN is not a replacement for an existing holder
Instant e-PAN is free, but “free” does not mean it is a replacement channel for a lost card. The Income Tax Department describes it as a first-time PAN service for eligible applicants who have never been allotted a PAN.
The current FAQ lists conditions including all of the following:
- The applicant must be an individual.
- The applicant must have a valid Aadhaar.
- The mobile number must be linked to Aadhaar.
- The applicant must not be a minor.
- The applicant must not be a representative assessee.
- No PAN must previously have been allotted to the applicant.
An existing PAN holder fails the last condition even if the physical card has disappeared. Entering Aadhaar details into Instant e-PAN to obtain another number would not solve a card-replacement problem and could create an illegal duplicate-PAN situation.

The treatment is the same for both conditions. A lost card is unavailable; a damaged card is unreadable or unusable. Neither event cancels the PAN number or permits a fresh allotment.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Submitting a fresh allotment application
This is the central error. A lost or damaged card is not evidence that your PAN has disappeared. Confirm the existing number and request a reprint.
Using the no-change link to edit information
The separate reprint route is for existing details. If a field needs correction, switch to the PAN Change Request route.
Ignoring the operator-history restriction
The quick facility is tied to the organization that processed your latest application. A UTIITSL or other-provider record may not be accepted through Protean’s separate link; use the relevant fallback route instead.
Expecting OTP delivery to a new contact
The reprint guideline requires a mobile number or email address already present in the Income Tax Department PAN database. Adding a new contact during a failed quick-reprint attempt does not bypass that requirement.
Assuming a published fee is permanent
The ₹50 Indian and ₹959 foreign-address amounts were the figures shown in the provider FAQ when checked on October 13, 2026. Confirm the current amount and destination rules at the time you apply.
A decision checklist
- Have you ever been allotted a PAN? If yes, do not use a first-time allotment service.
- Do you know the existing number? If not, recover it through the department’s lookup or verification service.
- Are every name, address, photograph, signature, and other field correct? If no, use a correction/change request.
- Was your latest application processed through Protean or the Income Tax Department e-Filing portal? If no, the separate Protean reprint link may not apply.
- Is a mobile number or email address already present in the PAN database for OTP? If no, use the authorized fallback route.
- Is the delivery address in India or outside India? Check the current fee for that destination before paying.
The answer in one sentence
You cannot lawfully obtain a second PAN because your card is lost or damaged; recover the existing number if necessary, then request an authorized reprint or correction of the same PAN.
