Usually, yes. In the UK, a bank holiday does not automatically switch off internet or mobile banking, and it does not by itself close every cash machine. You may be able to sign in, view balances, make payments and withdraw cash. What can differ is the bank’s own service hours, maintenance schedule, payment checks, the date a transaction is recorded, and whether a particular ATM is open, working and stocked with cash.
For a reliable answer, separate three questions: can you access the account, will the payment be processed when you expect, and is the specific ATM you need available? Check your bank’s holiday service notice and use LINK’s Cash Locator when a withdrawal or deposit is time-critical.

What a UK bank holiday actually changes
A bank holiday is a day on which financial dealings may be suspended under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971. That legal status mainly affects business-day processing and staffed services; it is not a universal instruction to disable digital channels or every ATM.

GOV.UK publishes separate calendars for England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. When a holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday is normally used, usually the following Monday. Your bank may apply the calendar relevant to the account, payment system or UK location involved, so check the correct national calendar when timing matters.

Can you use internet or mobile banking?
Signing in and viewing information
Most banks keep online and mobile banking available on bank holidays, allowing customers to sign in, check balances, review transactions, download statements and manage security settings. Availability is controlled by the bank’s systems, not simply by whether a branch is closed.
That does not guarantee uninterrupted access. Planned maintenance, fraud controls, a failed authentication service or an unplanned outage can affect a holiday just as they can on an ordinary day. A bank’s app status page, website notice or telephone service will give the most specific information for your account.
A provider-specific example
Allied Irish Bank (GB) says in its online-services guide: “You can use Online Services from 7am to 3am UK time, seven days a week.” That is AIB GB’s published window, not a timetable for every UK bank. The same guide illustrates why access hours and processing hours must be treated separately: it says holiday transfers and bill payments are included in the limit for the next Banking Day, and transactions made after 6pm appear with the next Banking Day date.

If your bank publishes a similar “Banking Day” rule, read the wording closely. A payment can be accepted through the app while its limit, value date or statement date is assigned to the next applicable Banking Day.
Will a payment go through on a bank holiday?
Faster Payments
The Bank of England describes Faster Payments this way: “The Faster Payments Service provides near real-time payments 24/7.” It is used for standing orders and payments made through internet and telephone banking. That means the underlying payment system is designed to operate through weekends and public holidays.
Near-real-time system availability is not a promise that every instruction will arrive instantly. Your bank can impose daily or transaction limits, run fraud and sanctions checks, take the service offline for maintenance, or apply its own cut-off and value-date rules. The receiving bank may also need to complete checks before making funds usable. Confirm the expected arrival time shown by your bank rather than assuming that a holiday removes all controls.

Being accepted is different from being completed
Online banking can show that an instruction was submitted even when the account entry, statement date or available limit is handled under the next Banking Day. This distinction matters when you are trying to meet a card payment, rent, tax bill or transfer deadline.

Save a screenshot or download the receipt if the payment is important. If the recipient says nothing has arrived, give them the bank’s stated timeframe before sending a duplicate payment; two successful instructions can create an avoidable overpayment.
Other electronic payments
The Financial Conduct Authority explains rules about when received electronic payments must be made available, with exceptions for certain savings products. The exact result depends on the account terms and the type of payment. A savings account with restrictions may not make incoming funds usable in the same way as a current account, even when the transfer itself was sent electronically.

For a holiday payment, check four details in your bank’s terms or confirmation:
- the payment method used;
- the bank’s published cut-off or maintenance window;
- the date the transaction will be credited or shown; and
- any account-specific limit or savings restriction.
Are ATMs open on a bank holiday?
Network availability versus one machine
Cash machines are often available on bank holidays, but there is no guarantee that every machine operates continuously. Availability is local and practical: a machine may be inside a building that is locked, be temporarily out of service, run out of notes, stop accepting deposits, or impose a fee that differs from another machine nearby.

LINK is the UK’s ATM network. The FCA advises consumers to use LINK’s Cash Locator to check local withdrawal and deposit services. Search the location before travelling, especially if you need a large withdrawal, a deposit facility or an accessible machine.

Settlement does not determine opening hours
The Bank of England says LINK cycles over weekends and public holidays settle on a net basis in RTGS on the following business day. That describes how participating institutions settle with each other; it does not tell you whether a particular cash machine is powered, accessible or stocked at a given time. Treat settlement timing and physical ATM availability as separate issues.
What to check at the machine
- Location access: an outdoor machine may be reachable while an indoor machine in a closed branch, supermarket or station is not.
- Cash capacity: popular machines can run out of particular denominations or all cash during a long holiday weekend.
- Withdrawal limits: your card and bank may impose daily limits, and a machine can have its own dispensing limit.
- Fees: some machines charge for withdrawals; the fee should be displayed before you confirm.
- Deposits: a withdrawal-only machine cannot accept cash or cheques, and a deposit may be credited later under the bank’s rules.
- Card and security checks: a blocked card, exceeded limit or suspected fraud can prevent a withdrawal even when the machine itself is working.
Online banking, ATMs and branches: what to expect
| Channel | What may be available on a bank holiday | What can still delay or prevent service | Best check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internet or mobile banking | Sign-in, balances, statements and payment instructions, subject to the bank’s published service window | Maintenance, outages, authentication problems, fraud checks, limits and Banking Day dating | Your bank’s app notice, website status page or telephone service |
| Faster Payments | Payment system operates near real time, 24/7 | Sending-bank limits and checks, maintenance, or receiving-bank handling | The confirmation screen and stated arrival time |
| ATM | Withdrawals and, at selected machines, deposits | Local closure, no cash, machine fault, access restrictions, fees or card limits | LINK Cash Locator and the machine’s on-screen fee and limit information |
| Branch counter | Usually closed on the bank holiday | Staffed services follow the branch’s own opening calendar | The bank’s branch locator |
The table describes common arrangements, not a guarantee for your bank or location. A branch closure does not prove that the app or a nearby outdoor ATM is unavailable.
How to check before relying on a holiday service
- Identify the exact holiday. Use the GOV.UK calendar for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, as appropriate. Check whether a weekend holiday has a substitute weekday.
- Check your bank’s service notice. Look in the app, website help pages or secure-message area for maintenance, payment cut-offs and holiday processing rules.
- Classify the task. Viewing a balance, sending a Faster Payment, receiving money, paying a bill, withdrawing cash and making a deposit can have different rules.
- Read the confirmation carefully. Record the reference, amount, recipient and the bank’s stated processing, arrival or value date.
- Verify local cash access. Use LINK’s Cash Locator, then check whether the listed machine is indoors, charges a fee and supports the withdrawal or deposit you need.
- Plan a fallback. If the payment is deadline-sensitive, submit it before the holiday where your bank advises doing so. If cash is essential, identify a second machine and keep a payment method that does not depend on one ATM.
Common holiday problems and what to do
The app opens, but the payment is pending
Do not immediately send it again. Check whether the bank has assigned the instruction to the next Banking Day, whether an extra security check is waiting, and whether the confirmation shows a future value date. Contact the bank through its official support channel if the stated timeframe passes.

Confirm the sort code, account number, amount and reference. Check your own transaction status and any warning about limits or checks. Ask the recipient to confirm with their bank, because the receiving bank’s handling can affect when funds become usable. Keep the payment reference for an investigation.
The ATM displays an error or has no cash
Cancel the transaction and use the LINK Cash Locator to find another machine rather than repeatedly retrying a failed withdrawal. Check your available balance, daily cash limit and card status. If your account was debited but no cash was dispensed, note the machine location, time and amount and report it to your card-issuing bank promptly.
You need a deposit while the branch is closed
Confirm that the machine accepts deposits and check the bank’s crediting rules. A deposit facility may be unavailable even when withdrawals work, and the funds may not be usable immediately. If the transaction is urgent, ask the bank what alternative channel it supports.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- Internet and mobile banking are generally usable on UK bank holidays, but each bank sets its own hours and maintenance windows.
- Faster Payments is designed to run near real time, 24/7, while bank limits, checks and Banking Day dating can still affect an individual transaction.
- ATMs are a local service: check access, cash, fees, limits and deposit capability for the exact machine.
- Branch opening, digital access, payment processing and ATM settlement are separate questions.
- When the timing or cash matters, verify your bank’s notice and the local machine before the holiday rather than relying on a general assumption.
