Its interest rate is fixed for that loan’s entire life. The main exceptions are certain older federal loans and private loans written with variable-rate terms. To know what can happen to your loan, identify its type and first-disbursement date, then read the promissory note, disclosure and account details. A federal Direct Loan servicer does not have discretion to raise that loan’s fixed rate.
The rule depends on the loan, not on the fact that rates changed in the economy
“Can student loan interest rates change after you borrow?” has no single answer for every borrower. Interest-rate behavior is determined by the loan’s program and contract. A fixed-rate loan keeps the same percentage for its life. An adjustable or variable-rate loan can reset according to a formula and schedule stated in its agreement.

Federal Direct Loan rates are calculated each year for new borrowing. That annual calculation does not turn an already issued Direct Loan into a variable-rate loan. The new percentage applies only to loans first disbursed during the applicable July-through-June academic-year window, according to Federal Student Aid’s annual rate guidance.

If your loan is fixed, the interest-rate percentage used under its terms does not rise or fall when market rates move. You can still have several loans with different fixed percentages because each loan may have been first disbursed in a different year or may belong to a different program.

What “variable” means
A variable rate changes only as the contract permits. The agreement should identify the index used as a reference, the lender’s margin, how often the rate may adjust, and any ceiling or cap. Those details differ by loan; there is no universal private-loan formula.
Current federal Direct Loan rates are fixed by first-disbursement year
For loans first disbursed from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, Federal Student Aid published these fixed rates:
| Direct Loan type | Borrower category | Fixed rate for first disbursements in 2026–27 | What the figure applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Subsidized or Direct Unsubsidized | Undergraduate | 6.52% | Each qualifying loan first disbursed during the July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 window |
| Direct Unsubsidized | Graduate or professional | 8.07% | Each qualifying loan first disbursed during that same 2026–27 window |
| Direct PLUS | Parent, graduate or professional borrower | 9.07% | Each qualifying PLUS loan first disbursed during that same 2026–27 window |
These percentages are not a rate update for loans disbursed in earlier academic years. A loan first disbursed before July 1, 2026 keeps the fixed rate assigned under the rules for its own first-disbursement period. Federal Student Aid’s rate table should be checked again for later academic years because each year’s table covers a new borrowing window.

Why two federal loans can have different rates
Federal rates are tied to the loan’s type and first-disbursement date. Receiving another disbursement later does not reset the rate on an earlier loan. A borrower who attends school over several years may therefore hold multiple Direct Loans, each with its own fixed percentage.
Example: separate loans, separate rates
Suppose you received an undergraduate Direct Loan in an earlier academic year and another undergraduate Direct Loan whose first disbursement falls in 2026–27. The earlier loan keeps its original fixed rate. The newer loan receives the 2026–27 undergraduate rate of 6.52%. Seeing two percentages in your account is expected; it does not mean the older loan was repriced.
The wording in the Master Promissory Note
Federal Student Aid’s Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loan Master Promissory Note explains the distinction this way: “Unless we notify you in writing that a different rate will apply, the interest rate for any loan you receive under this MPN is a fixed rate (meaning that your interest rate will never change) that is calculated each year.” The phrase “calculated each year” refers to setting the rate for new loans, not changing the rate on a loan already issued.

Older federal loans can be exceptions
Not every federal education loan follows the current Direct Loan rule. Servicing guidance identifies certain federal loans first disbursed from July 1, 1998, through June 30, 2006, as potentially variable, with annual adjustments under their governing terms. Older Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) loans may be fixed or variable, depending on the specific loan and its documents.
| Loan category | Can the rate change after borrowing? | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Current federal Direct Loan | Generally no; the rate is fixed for that loan’s life | Loan type and first-disbursement date |
| Certain federal loans first disbursed July 1, 1998–June 30, 2006 | Potentially; some have annual variable adjustments | The note’s adjustment rules and the loan’s servicing history |
| FFELP loan | Could be fixed or variable | The individual promissory note and disclosures |
Do not classify an older loan from memory or from the word “federal” alone. The program name, disbursement date and contract control.
Private student loans may be fixed or variable
Private lenders may offer either fixed-rate or variable-rate student loans. If the loan is variable, the contract—not a general market rule—determines when and how the percentage changes. Read the disclosure and promissory note for four items:

- Index: the reference rate used in the adjustment formula.
- Margin: the amount added to that index for your loan.
- Adjustment interval: how often the lender recalculates the rate, such as monthly, quarterly or annually if the contract specifies it.
- Cap or floor: any contractual limit on how high or low the rate may move.
One private lender’s index, margin, timing or cap cannot be generalized to another lender. A fixed private loan should remain fixed under its agreement, while a variable private loan can change even though you have already borrowed.
What to ask when comparing private offers
Ask whether the advertised percentage is fixed or variable, which index and margin apply, when the first adjustment can occur, how often later adjustments occur, and whether a periodic or lifetime cap limits changes. Also compare repayment and borrower-protection terms; the rate alone does not define the cost or flexibility of a loan.
Can your student loan servicer raise your rate?
For a federal Direct Loan, no. The servicer administers the account but does not set or change that loan’s fixed interest rate. If the rate displayed in your account appears different, treat it as a records question that needs reconciliation, not as evidence that the servicer may freely reprice the debt.

If a federal Direct Loan’s displayed rate changes
- Confirm that you are looking at the same loan, not another loan in the account with a different first-disbursement date.
- Record the loan type, original and current displayed rate, first-disbursement information and the date you observed each figure.
- Compare the account details with the promissory note, disclosure and any written notice associated with that loan.
- Ask the servicer to explain the mismatch and to reconcile the displayed information with the governing loan terms.
- Keep copies of the account screen, documents and correspondence until the discrepancy is resolved.
If the loan is private or an older federal variable-rate loan, ask the lender or servicer to show the contract formula, the index value, the margin, the adjustment date and any cap used for the new rate.
How to verify every loan you have
Borrowers often have a portfolio rather than one student loan. Review each loan separately instead of relying on a single average rate.
- List each account. Use your federal account for federal loans and your lender’s account for private loans. Note the loan program, balance, first-disbursement or origination date and current rate shown.
- Find the governing documents. Retrieve the applicable Master Promissory Note, private promissory note, disclosure and any notices. Federal Student Aid identifies the loan type, disbursement information and governing note as the records that establish the terms.
- Classify the rate. Mark each loan fixed or variable. For a federal loan, check whether it is a current Direct Loan, an older potentially variable loan or an FFELP loan.
- Read the adjustment language. For a variable loan, write down the index, margin, adjustment frequency, first possible adjustment date and caps. If a term is not stated in the document, ask the lender rather than guessing.
- Compare the account to the contract. A displayed rate should match the applicable documents and notices. Flag any unexplained difference.
- Escalate unresolved errors. Request a written explanation and correction from the servicer or lender, retaining your records.
How to compare two student loans without mixing up the rates
Use the same set of questions for each loan. The following framework separates the rate issue from other terms that affect your decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Comparison question | Why it matters | Where to find the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Is the source federal or private? | Federal Direct rules differ from private contracts; older federal programs have their own exceptions. | Account loan type and promissory note |
| Is the rate fixed or variable? | Fixed rates do not reset; variable rates can adjust under stated terms. | Note and disclosure |
| When was the loan first disbursed or originated? | Federal Direct rates are assigned by the first-disbursement academic-year window, and older federal dates can signal different rules. | Federal or lender account and disbursement records |
| If variable, what are the index, margin, interval and cap? | These determine how a future adjustment is calculated and limited. | Variable-rate section of the agreement |
| What other repayment and borrower-protection terms apply? | The interest percentage is only one part of the loan’s cost and flexibility. | Promissory note, disclosure and program materials |
Common mistakes that lead borrowers to think a fixed rate changed
- Confusing an annual announcement with an annual reset. Federal officials publish a new rate for loans first disbursed in the next academic year; that announcement does not reprice prior Direct Loans.
- Combining several loans mentally. A new loan can carry a different fixed rate while an older loan remains unchanged.
- Assuming every federal loan is a current Direct Loan. Older federal and FFELP loans may follow different rules.
- Assuming every private loan is variable. Private lenders can offer fixed-rate loans as well.
- Assuming every variable loan uses the same index or schedule. The contract controls those terms, and they vary by lender and product.
- Relying only on a website summary. The promissory note, disclosure and written notices are the controlling records when an account display is unclear.
What to remember when rates or account details look different
Start with the loan’s identity: federal or private, program type, and first-disbursement or origination date. A current federal Direct Loan should have a fixed rate for life. An older federal loan may be variable under its historical terms, and a private loan can be fixed or variable according to its contract. The 2026–27 Direct Loan percentages apply only to loans first disbursed in that July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 period. When an account display conflicts with those principles, compare the record to the governing documents and ask the servicer or lender for a written explanation.
