Usually, no. Medicare says it will not call you unexpectedly to request personal or private information. If a caller asks for your Medicare number, Social Security number, bank details, payment, or threatens to cancel your benefits, end the call and contact Medicare yourself at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
A legitimate payment can still be mentioned in a scam. Medicare documents a one-time $90 Part B premium rebate for eligible people in October 2026, but you do not claim it by responding to an unsolicited caller, text, email, or letter.

What Medicare says about unexpected calls
Medicare’s official guidance is direct: “Medicare will never call you uninvited and ask you to give us personal or private information.” An unexpected contact that seeks sensitive data or money is therefore not a normal way to process a Medicare rebate.
Medicare also says, “If someone calls and asks for your information, for money, or threatens to cancel your health benefits, hang up and call us 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).” Use the number you obtain independently, not a number supplied by the caller or included in an unexpected message.

This warning does not mean Medicare can never telephone anyone. The agency lists limited situations in which a call may be expected, such as returning a message you left, following up on a fraud report, or a plan agent contacting an existing member after enrollment. The important distinction is whether you initiated or reasonably expect the contact, and whether the person is demanding sensitive information or payment.
The October 2026 Medicare rebate is real—but a call is not proof
Medicare.gov describes a one-time $90 payment in October 2026 to offset the Part B premium for people who meet specific conditions. The existence of that payment does not authenticate a caller, text, email, or letter that mentions it.

Red flags that a “rebate” contact is a scam
An unexpected request for your Medicare or Social Security number
A caller who already has your name or address may still be trying to obtain the information needed for identity theft or fraudulent billing. Do not read out your Medicare number, Social Security number, account password, or other identifying details during an unsolicited contact.
A demand for bank details, card details, or an upfront fee
The October 2026 payment is described as arriving by Treasury direct deposit or check; it is not released after you pay a processing charge. Medicare’s guidance also treats requests for money or private information as a reason to hang up. A plan does not need bank or credit-card details merely to provide a quote.
A threat that your benefits will be cancelled
Pressure to act immediately, a warning that your coverage will end today, or a demand to “confirm” information before a deadline is a classic warning sign. End the conversation and verify your status through Medicare’s published contact route.

A “free” supply, service, or rebate that requires your details
Fraudsters may describe a free medical supply, service, or refund and then ask for your Medicare number to “qualify.” Do not exchange sensitive information for an unsolicited benefit. Check your claims later for services you did not receive.

Medicare states, “Remember that Medicare will never call you to sell you anything or visit you at your home.” An unrequested visit to discuss plans, equipment, or a rebate is not made legitimate by a badge, brochure, or familiar logo.
Caller ID, a familiar name, or a supplied link
A displayed number or organization name does not establish who is calling. Do not use a callback number, web address, or QR code supplied in an unexpected message to verify the story. Close the contact and start from Medicare’s official phone or website yourself.

How to handle a suspicious call, text, email, or letter
- Stop sharing information. Do not provide your Medicare number, Social Security number, password, banking details, card number, or payment.
- End the contact. You do not need to argue or explain. Hang up, close the chat, delete the message, or stop responding if the person is pressuring you.
- Contact Medicare independently. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. For a question about a specific health plan, use the telephone number printed on your plan card.
- Check your records. Sign in to your secure Medicare.gov account and compare claims with the care and services you actually received. Review Medicare statements for unfamiliar providers, dates, supplies, or procedures.
- Report suspected fraud. Medicare accepts reports at 1-800-MEDICARE and through its online fraud-reporting route. If you believe your identity information was misused, follow Medicare’s identity-theft guidance as well.
Keep the suspicious message, phone number, date, and the claims or statements involved if you need to describe what happened. Do not call the suspicious number back to collect evidence.

A plan agent’s legitimate follow-up still does not justify asking for information that the plan does not need, nor does it prevent you from ending the call and calling the number on your plan card.

What to do if you already shared information
If you gave a Medicare or Social Security number
Stop the conversation and contact Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE. Tell the representative what information you disclosed and when. Follow Medicare’s identity-theft instructions and monitor your Medicare statements and account claims for care you did not receive.
If you gave banking or card information or sent money
Contact Medicare to report the suspected fraud and explain the payment or account information involved. Preserve the message and transaction details so they can be included in the report. Continue checking your Medicare records for unrelated claims that you do not recognize.
If you clicked a link or followed instructions in a message
Do not return to the message to verify it. Use Medicare’s independently accessed website or telephone number, change any credentials that you entered into the suspicious page, and tell Medicare what happened. A familiar-looking page or caller name is not authentication.
How Medicare and plan marketing rules limit sales calls
Medicare’s consumer guidance says Medicare will not call to sell you anything. Plan marketing has additional limits: plans generally may call only when you are already a member or have given permission. A plan does not need bank or credit-card information to give you a quote.
These rules do not make every call from a plan fraudulent, and they do not turn an unsolicited sales pitch into an official rebate notice. If a person claims to represent a plan, ask for no sensitive information, end the call, and use the contact details on your existing plan card to verify whether the person or agency was authorized to contact you.
Checking a rebate claim without being rushed
- Write down the exact claim: the alleged amount, payment date, program name, and reason you were told you qualify.
- Compare it with Medicare’s official description of the October 2026 one-time $90 Part B rebate and its eligibility limits.
- Do not click a message link or use its telephone number. Open Medicare.gov yourself or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
- Expect the documented payment method—a direct deposit or check from the U.S. Treasury—not a request to pay a fee or “unlock” funds.
- After checking, review your Medicare account and statements for services or claims you do not recognize.
The safest response to an unexpected Medicare rebate contact is therefore simple: disclose nothing, end the contact, and verify through Medicare on a channel you initiated.
