Yes, but mostly indirectly. Artificial-intelligence systems consume electricity, not oil, when they train models or answer queries. Oil demand can rise later through diesel backup generators, construction and transport, petrochemical materials, equipment supply chains and broader economic growth stimulated by AI. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has not published a standalone number for oil demand caused by AI, so any precise “AI barrels” estimate would overstate what is known.
The measurable first step is electricity: data centres used about 415 TWh in 2024, or 1.5% of global electricity, according to the IEA’s 2025 Energy and AI report. How much oil follows depends on the local power mix, the pace of construction, whether efficiency gains trigger more use and how strongly AI changes the wider economy.

No. The direct energy input for computing is electricity. Servers, cooling systems and networking equipment draw power from a grid or a dedicated generator; that electricity may be produced by renewables, natural gas, nuclear, coal or other sources. Oil is not the standard fuel for continuously operating data centres.
The distinction matters because electricity demand and oil demand are different measures. A data centre can increase electricity consumption without materially increasing oil use if new power comes from wind, solar or nuclear. Conversely, an electricity shortage can lead an operator to use diesel backup units, creating a small but direct liquid-fuel demand. Most oil effects occur further along the chain.

The IEA captures the basic relationship in one sentence: “There is no AI without energy; at the same time, AI has the potential to transform the energy sector.” That statement describes both the immediate power requirement and the possibility that AI will change how energy is produced and consumed.
What is the energy chain from an AI query to fossil-fuel demand?
Each stage adds a different kind of energy use. Keeping the stages separate prevents the common mistake of treating all AI-related energy as oil consumption.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Adoption creates computing work. Training a model, generating an image, translating text or running an automated agent requires processors to perform calculations. More users and more capable models increase the number and intensity of those calculations.
- Computing work becomes electricity demand. Servers perform the calculations, while cooling, power conditioning and networking add overhead. Training is concentrated in large bursts; inference (serving user requests) can run continuously at high volume.
- Electricity is supplied by a local generation mix. Utilities and data-centre operators combine existing capacity with new wind, solar, hydropower, nuclear, gas or other generation. The marginal source—the next unit brought online—often determines the short-run emissions and fuel effect.
- Grid constraints change the choice of supply. If transmission interconnection or generation is unavailable, a project may install on-site generation. Gas turbines or engines can provide firm power, while batteries and renewables may cover part of the load.
- Construction and operation create supply-chain demand. Building substations, turbines, buildings and chip factories uses steel, cement, plastics, trucks and heavy machinery. Those activities consume fuels and petrochemical products, including oil-derived materials.
- Oil appears through secondary channels. Diesel for backup units, delivery fleets and construction equipment is the clearest direct pathway. Petrochemicals used in cables, cooling systems, insulation and electronics are another. A broader AI-driven expansion can also raise transport and industrial activity, lifting oil demand beyond the data centre itself.
These pathways are causal possibilities, not a single measured conversion rate. The IEA reports describe the electricity buildout and fuel mix, but do not total the resulting oil demand as an AI-specific figure.
How much electricity do data centres use now, and how fast could that grow?
The IEA’s figures show why AI matters to power planners even though oil is not the primary input. The 2025 base case and the IEA’s 2026 update use different horizons and assumptions, so they should not be blended into one forecast.
| Measure | IEA figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Global data-centre electricity, 2024 | 415 TWh | Actual consumption estimated by the IEA in its 2025 analysis |
| Share of global electricity, 2024 | 1.5% | Data centres’ share of worldwide electricity use |
| Data-centre electricity, 2030 | 945 TWh | 2025 Energy and AI base case |
| Data-centre electricity, 2035 | 1,200 TWh | Same 2025 base case |
| Updated 2025–2030 projection | 485–950 TWh | Range in the IEA’s 2026 update for global data-centre electricity over that period |
| Global data-centre electricity growth in 2025 | 17% | IEA 2026 estimate for all data centres |
| AI-focused data-centre electricity growth in 2025 | 50% | IEA 2026 estimate for facilities focused on AI workloads |
In 2024, the United States accounted for 45% of data-centre electricity, China 25% and Europe 15%, according to the IEA. Those shares identify where grid impacts are concentrated, but they do not mean that every facility in those regions uses the same fuel mix. The remaining consumption was spread across other countries.

The IEA expects a diversified buildout rather than an oil-powered data-centre system. In its 2025 outlook, renewables provide more than 450 TWh of additional generation for data-centre demand through 2035. Natural gas adds 175 TWh, and nuclear adds about the same amount as gas.
Gas can nevertheless be the important marginal source in a constrained market because it can be dispatched when wind and solar output is low and can be built faster than some large infrastructure. That makes gas central to some local AI-power decisions without making it the universal or dominant source worldwide. Nuclear’s contribution is comparable to gas in the IEA base case, while renewables supply the largest increment.
Why are on-site generators appearing in US plans?
Connecting a large facility to the grid can take longer than constructing the servers. The IEA’s 2026 update estimates that 15–27 GW of on-site natural-gas capacity could serve US data centres by 2030. Reliable on-site gas generation must be sized above the critical and variable load; the IEA estimates 30%–70% overbuilding may be required for that reliability.
On-site gas changes the fuel question from “Which power plants serve the grid?” to “Which equipment and fuel supply can be installed at the campus?” It increases natural-gas demand directly. Oil still enters mainly through construction, maintenance, transportation and liquid backup fuel rather than as the normal continuous generator fuel.

Where can oil demand rise indirectly?
Oil’s connection to AI is real but distributed across several activities. None of these channels has been quantified by the IEA as a standalone AI-oil total.
Diesel and other liquid backup fuels
Data centres require uninterrupted power. Emergency diesel generators are a common resilience technology, normally tested periodically and operated during outages or commissioning. If grid constraints, extreme weather or reliability concerns lead operators to run them more often, liquid-fuel consumption rises. The amount depends on generator size, runtime, fuel storage rules and local air-quality requirements.
Construction and logistics
New campuses require excavation, concrete, steel, cranes, trucks, ships and rail movements. Heavy equipment and freight commonly use liquid fuels, and each project has a different construction schedule. The resulting oil demand is tied to the pace and location of building, not to the electricity used by a single AI query.
Petrochemicals and equipment
Oil and gas feedstocks are used to make plastics, resins, insulation, lubricants and other materials found in servers, cables, cooling equipment and buildings. Semiconductor manufacturing also depends on complex chemical and industrial supply chains. These products embody energy and feedstock demand even when the finished data centre runs on renewable electricity.
AI-driven economic expansion
If AI raises productivity, incomes or investment, people and businesses may travel more, ship more goods and consume more manufactured products. Such rebound effects can increase oil use outside the technology sector. The IEA’s 2026 update estimates that an AI-driven gross-domestic-product boost could raise global energy demand in 2035 by 1%–4% compared with a trend without AI growth. That is a total-energy estimate, not an oil-only estimate, but it illustrates why macroeconomic effects can exceed the fuel used at the data centre.

Could AI reduce energy and oil demand through efficiency?
Yes. The IEA identifies applications that can lower energy use or prevent fuel losses: industrial process optimisation, renewable-power forecasting, grid fault detection, transmission management, oil-and-gas equipment maintenance, leak detection and methane-emissions reduction.
Efficiency at the task level does not guarantee lower total demand. The IEA says energy use per AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years. A simple text query can use less electricity than running a television for the same period, but video generation, extended reasoning and agentic tasks can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query. If each task becomes cheaper while the number of tasks, model size or workload complexity expands faster, aggregate electricity use still rises.
The same logic applies to oil. Better maintenance can reduce fuel wasted by leaks or inefficient equipment, yet cheaper and more capable AI may encourage additional production, transport or consumption. The net result depends on adoption, efficiency improvements, rebound spending and policy choices.
How should you evaluate a claim that AI will drive oil demand?
Ask what quantity is being measured and which link in the chain is being assumed. A credible claim should specify at least the following:
- Direct versus indirect oil: Is it counting diesel burned on-site, or oil used in construction, petrochemicals and economy-wide growth?
- Electricity versus primary energy: A TWh of data-centre electricity is not equivalent to a barrel of oil. Generation losses and fuel conversion must be stated.
- Location and grid mix: A facility connected to a nuclear-heavy grid has a different marginal fuel from one relying on gas-fired generation or on-site engines.
- Time horizon: Near-term construction from 2024 to 2030 is different from post-2030 scenarios involving new transmission, reactors or efficiency gains.
- Workload assumptions: Text, video, reasoning and autonomous-agent tasks have very different energy requirements.
- Infrastructure bottlenecks: Transformers, transmission, turbines, chips, permitting and financing can delay or reshape the buildout.
- Rebound effects: Claimed savings should be tested against additional usage and wider economic activity.
Without these qualifications, a headline about “AI oil demand” may simply be relabeling an electricity forecast or an economy-wide scenario.

What does the AI–oil link mean for households and investors?
For a household, the practical issue is that electricity, natural gas and oil respond to different constraints. A data-centre boom can tighten a regional power market, require new generation and affect infrastructure spending without producing a proportionate change in local gasoline or heating-oil use. Broader economic growth, freight activity or fuel-price changes would be separate channels to monitor.
For anyone assessing an energy or technology outlook, separate operating exposure from supply-chain exposure. A company that sells power equipment may be affected by data-centre construction; a fuel supplier may benefit from on-site gas generation or logistics; an oil producer is exposed mainly through macroeconomic demand and petrochemical markets, not because servers burn crude directly. The IEA figures establish the scale of electricity growth, but they do not provide a forecast of earnings or oil prices.
What remains uncertain?
Three uncertainties dominate. First, the pace of AI adoption and the mix of workloads determine how many calculations are performed. Second, the electricity system may add renewables, gas, nuclear, storage and transmission at different speeds in different regions. Third, efficiency can reduce energy per task while lower costs stimulate far more tasks.
Because those variables interact, the most defensible conclusion is directional: AI growth is likely to increase electricity demand substantially; natural gas can gain a significant role where grids are constrained; and oil demand may rise indirectly through backup fuel, building and supply chains, and economic rebound. A single global number for oil caused by AI has not been established by the IEA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is natural gas discussed more often than oil in AI power forecasts?
Gas turbines and engines can provide firm, dispatchable electricity close to a new data-centre campus, which is valuable when grid connections are delayed. Oil-fired generation is generally less common for continuous operation, so oil appears mainly in backup, transport and materials rather than as the principal power source.
What could make AI’s oil effect larger than expected?
The effect could be larger if data centres rely on frequent liquid-fuel generator operation, if construction expands rapidly, or if AI stimulates unusually strong growth in freight, manufacturing and travel. A prolonged shortage of grid capacity could also increase temporary use of fuel-burning equipment.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan lower energy per AI task stop total data-centre demand from rising?
Only if efficiency improvements outpace growth in the number and intensity of tasks. New applications such as generated video or autonomous agents can be sufficiently energy-intensive that falling unit consumption is outweighed by higher usage.
What is the difference between an electricity forecast and a primary-energy forecast?
An electricity forecast counts power delivered to data-centre equipment, measured in watt-hours. A primary-energy forecast also accounts for the fuels and conversion losses used to produce that electricity, so the two figures cannot be converted without specifying the generation technologies and their operating conditions.
