What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, possibly. Submitting an income-driven repayment (IDR), deferment, or forbearance application does not by itself prove that your payment obligation has stopped. Unless your servicer confirms that relief was approved, gives its effective date, and shows the resulting payment status on your account, a payment can become delinquent and may be reported. The timing depends on whether the loan is federal or private, who owns a federal loan, the type of application, and how many days the account is past due.
What “pending” means for your payment
A pending label generally means the servicer has received a request and has not finished processing it. It is not the same as an approved deferment, an approved forbearance, or a reduced payment that is already effective. A request can remain under review while the original bill continues to show a due date.

Before the next due date, ask the servicer to answer four specific questions:
- Has the application been approved, denied, or merely received?
- If approved, what is the effective date and what payment amount applies?
- Is the account currently in deferment, forbearance, an IDR processing forbearance, or another status?
- What is the next payment due date and amount shown on the account?
Request the answer in writing through the secure message system or another channel that creates a dated record. A representative saying that an application is “being worked on” does not establish that a payment pause is active.

Reporting timelines differ by loan type
Federal Student Aid and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describe different reporting points. A borrower can have several loans with different owners, so identify each loan rather than applying one rule to the entire account.
| Loan category | Relevant timing | What the guidance says |
|---|---|---|
| Federal loans generally | Delinquency begins the day after a missed payment; reporting at 90 or more days delinquent | Federal Student Aid says a missed payment makes the loan delinquent the next day, and the servicer reports delinquency to the three major national credit bureaus once it reaches 90 days or more. |
| Private student loans | May be reported as early as 30 days without payment | CFPB guidance says private loans may be reported delinquent as early as 30 days. The contract, lender policy, and applicable law control the individual account. |
| Commercially held federal FFEL loans | 60 days | CFPB consumer guidance identifies day 60 as the reporting point for commercially held FFEL loans. |
| Department of Education-owned Direct and FFEL loans | 90 days | CFPB guidance identifies day 90 for ED-owned Direct and FFEL loans, consistent with Federal Student Aid’s 90-day statement for federal reporting. |
These are reporting distinctions, not permission to miss a bill. A loan can be delinquent before a bureau entry appears. Conversely, a pending request does not automatically reset the number of days past due.
Federal IDR applications: when processing forbearance may apply
Federal Student Aid says most IDR applications are processed within a few weeks, although some take longer. When a servicer needs more time to process an IDR request, recalculate an IDR payment, or update income information, it may place the borrower in a processing forbearance. Federal Student Aid’s IDR FAQ says this processing forbearance will not last longer than 60 days.

“May” is important: the existence of a pending IDR request does not mean every account has been placed in that status. Check your individual record for the forbearance entry, its start date, and the date it ends. If the account still shows a payment due, ask whether that bill remains payable while processing continues.

Check the request in StudentAid.gov
For a federal IDR request, sign in to StudentAid.gov and open My Activity. The page can show:
- Draft: the request has not been completed and submitted.
- In Progress: processing has started but is not complete.
- In Review: the request is being evaluated.
- Action Required: you may need to provide information or a manual signature.
- Completed: processing is finished; review the resulting payment and effective date with the servicer.
An “Action Required” status deserves immediate attention. A missing document or signature can keep an application from moving forward while the original bill remains due.
Private loans require confirmation before you stop paying
For private student loans, deferment and forbearance terms vary by lender, contract, and applicable law. The CFPB states that borrowers must continue making payments until the servicer notifies them that deferment or forbearance has been granted. In practical terms, submitting a request is not approval.
Because private loans may be reported as delinquent as early as 30 days without payment, waiting for an answer can carry a shorter reporting window than many federal borrowers expect. Read the promissory note and the current account notice, then ask the lender to identify the exact contractual provision and effective date that applies to your request.

Pending deferment, forbearance, discharge, or consolidation requests
The 60-day processing-forbearance statement is specific to federal IDR processing. Do not extend it automatically to every other application. A request for a deferment, discretionary forbearance, discharge, consolidation, or forgiveness can have different eligibility rules, documentation requirements, and effective dates.
For any application other than an IDR request, rely on the status the servicer records on your account. Ask whether an administrative hold or other temporary status has actually been entered, when it began, and whether it covers the payment that is currently due. If the representative cannot confirm a pause, treat the bill as still due unless you receive contrary written instructions.
Special caution for pending SAVE applications in 2026
Federal Student Aid’s current SAVE FAQ says a court order ended the SAVE plan in March 2026. Borrowers affected by that change are instructed to choose another eligible repayment plan. If you submitted a SAVE request and it is still pending, use the current official instructions and ask your servicer to explain your account status while a new application is processed.
The SAVE situation is legally and operationally changeable. Do not rely on an older notice that treated a SAVE submission as a continuing payment pause. Check the current account message, the plan shown in My Activity, the payment amount on the bill, and any effective-date notice.

What to do before the next due date
- Inventory each loan. In your federal aid dashboard and servicer statements, identify whether each balance is a Direct loan, an ED-owned or commercially held FFEL loan, or a private loan. A single borrower can have more than one category.
- Check the official application status. For federal IDR requests, review StudentAid.gov’s My Activity. Resolve any “Action Required” item, including a requested document or manual signature.
- Read the servicer account, not only the application screen. Record the current amount due, due date, days past due, and any deferment, forbearance, or processing-forbearance entry.
- Contact the servicer with precise questions. Ask whether the pending request changes the amount due, whether a payment is still required, the effective date of any relief, and the date the next bill will be generated.
- Pay an amount that remains due if you can. Unless the servicer confirms a pause or revised amount, do not assume the application protects the account. For private loans, CFPB expressly directs borrowers to continue payments until approval notice.
- Save evidence. Keep the submission confirmation, screenshots of My Activity, notices, secure messages, call dates and representative names, payment receipts, and bank records showing attempted payments.
Federal Student Aid says help from federal servicers is free. Use StudentAid.gov and the servicer identified in your account rather than paying a third party to submit an application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a late payment is reported while the request is pending
First determine whether the report may be accurate
Compare the bureau entry with the loan’s due date, the number of days past due, the loan owner, and the status the servicer recorded. A pending application alone does not establish that the report is wrong. An approved relief status with an effective date covering the missed payment could present a different question, so obtain the approval notice and account history.
Ask the servicer to correct an account error
Send a dated written request identifying the application number, submission date, approval or effective-date notice, payment records, and the specific field you believe is incorrect. Ask the servicer to review both the account history and any credit reporting it furnished. Keep copies and proof of delivery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDispute inaccurate information with the reporting agency
If a credit report contains information that is inaccurate, dispute the item with the relevant credit-reporting agency and provide supporting records. You may also send the evidence to the servicer. The available official guidance does not establish a guaranteed result or a fixed timetable for an individual dispute, so monitor the response and retain every document.

Common assumptions that cause trouble
- “I submitted it, so the bill is paused.” Submission and approval are different events.
- “All federal loans use the 90-day rule.” Commercially held FFEL loans are identified in CFPB guidance at 60 days; ownership matters.
- “A processing forbearance is automatic.” Federal Student Aid describes it as something a servicer may use for IDR processing, for no more than 60 days, not as an automatic status for every pending request.
- “A historical COVID-era on-ramp still prevents reporting.” The temporary on-ramp covering October 1, 2023, through September 30, 2024, has expired and is not current protection.
- “One status applies to my whole portfolio.” Different loans can have different owners, due dates, applications, and reporting timelines.
Questions to ask in one call or secure message
Use a written checklist so the answer is account-specific:
- What is the exact loan program and owner for each balance?
- How many days past due does each loan show today?
- Is my application received, in review, approved, denied, or missing information?
- Has a deferment, forbearance, or IDR processing forbearance been entered?
- What are the start and end dates of that status?
- What payment amount is due now, and what is the next due date?
- Has any delinquency been furnished to a credit bureau, and if so, for which loan and date?
Ask for a confirmation number and a written response. If the answer changes later, the dated record helps show what you were told and when.
The practical answer
A servicer can report a late payment while an application is pending when the account remains delinquent under the applicable loan and reporting rules. Federal loans are reported at 90 or more days delinquent under Federal Student Aid’s stated rule, while CFPB guidance identifies earlier potential reporting points for private loans and commercially held FFEL loans. A federal IDR request can receive a processing forbearance of up to 60 days, but only if the servicer actually places the account in that status. Verify the loan type, due date, recorded status, and approval effective date; keep paying any amount still shown as due when possible; and challenge information that is demonstrably inaccurate.
