Can a minor have a PPF account if a parent already has one?

Yes. A parent can keep an individual Public Provident Fund (PPF) account and open one PPF account in the minor child’s name as the child’s guardian. The important limits are that a particular minor may have only one PPF account across all guardians, and the parent’s own deposits plus deposits into accounts opened for minors share one annual ceiling of ₹1,50,000.

The current rule comes from the Government of India’s Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019, as amended by notification dated 5 May 2020. It is also repeated on the National Savings Institute’s official PPF clarification page. Older forms and PDFs may show historic limits; use the amended scheme text for the figures in this article.

What the PPF rules permit

The scheme treats these as two separate permissions:

  • An individual may hold one PPF account in their own name.
  • The same individual may open one account on behalf of each minor for whom that individual is the guardian.

The scheme states: “An individual may also open one account on behalf of each minor or a person of unsound mind of whom he is the guardian.” A proviso immediately limits the child’s side of the arrangement: only one account may be opened in the minor’s name by any guardian.

Therefore, your existing PPF account does not block a child’s account. The restriction is not “one account per family.” It is “one account in the name of each minor,” while the guardian’s contribution limit is aggregated across the relevant accounts.

One child can have only one PPF account

If both parents are guardians, they cannot lawfully create two separate PPF accounts for the same child. One parent may submit the application, but the child’s name can appear on only one PPF account under the scheme.

Situation Permitted? How the rule applies
Parent has a PPF account and opens one for the child Yes The parent’s individual account and the child’s account are allowed.
Mother opens one account for the child, then father opens another for the same child No Only one PPF account may be opened in that minor’s name by any guardian.
One parent opens accounts for two different minor children Yes The scheme allows one account on behalf of each minor for whom the individual is guardian.
A guardian has an individual account plus accounts for several minors Yes, subject to the deposit ceiling Each minor may have one account, but all deposits linked to that guardian’s own and minor accounts count toward ₹1,50,000 a year.

The one-account test follows the minor, not the parent who files the paperwork. Changing which parent acts as guardian does not create a second allowance for the same child.

How the ₹1,50,000 annual ceiling works

The maximum is a combined annual limit for an individual’s own PPF account and the account or accounts that individual opens on behalf of minors. It is not ₹1,50,000 for every account. The Government of India scheme text sets the ceiling at ₹1,50,000 per year.

For example, if a parent deposits ₹1,00,000 into their own PPF account during the relevant year, only ₹50,000 remains within that parent’s combined ceiling for deposits into the child’s account or accounts. If the parent has accounts for two children, the remaining ₹50,000 is shared between them; it does not become ₹50,000 for each child.

Parent’s own account deposits Deposits into minor accounts Combined amount Result under the annual ceiling
₹1,50,000 ₹0 ₹1,50,000 At the stated maximum
₹1,00,000 ₹50,000 ₹1,50,000 At the stated maximum
₹75,000 ₹75,000 across one or more minor accounts ₹1,50,000 At the stated maximum
₹50,000 ₹1,20,000 ₹1,70,000 Exceeds the combined ceiling

The ceiling concerns the individual’s own account together with accounts opened on behalf of minors. Do not interpret the child’s account as an additional ₹1,50,000 allowance merely because it has a different name.

Minimum deposit for the child’s account

The scheme sets a ₹500 minimum annual deposit per account. Deposits must be made in multiples of ₹50. The minimum applies to each PPF account, so a parent maintaining both an individual account and a minor’s account should check the minimum separately for each account.

Examples of amounts that meet the stated denomination rule include ₹500, ₹550, ₹1,000 and ₹10,000. An amount such as ₹525 would not be in a multiple of ₹50. The ₹500 minimum is not a second annual maximum; it is the minimum amount specified for an account for the year.

Can both parents open a PPF account for the same child?

No. Both parents may be guardians, but the scheme permits only one PPF account in that minor’s name. The first parent should coordinate with the other parent before filing the application, especially if the family has moved, changed banks or post offices, or used more than one authorized office.

If you discover that two applications or accounts may have been created for the same minor, do not assume that both are valid or that the duplicate can simply be ignored. Ask the authorized bank or post office handling the account to review the records and explain the correction process. The available official material establishes the one-account rule, but it does not specify a universal closure, merger or excess-contribution procedure for every office.

Whose name appears on the account?

The account is opened in the minor’s name, with the parent or another eligible guardian making the application on the minor’s behalf. The guardian’s role explains why the guardian’s own PPF deposits and deposits into minor accounts are counted together for the ₹1,50,000 ceiling.

Do not confuse the person completing Form-1 with the person named as the account holder. The official form provides for a guardian to apply in the minor’s name and includes declarations about other PPF accounts. The form’s declarations are important because they help the office check whether the child already has an account and whether the application is being made within the scheme’s limits.

How to apply for a minor’s PPF account

The exact operational process can differ between authorized banks and post offices. The following sequence follows what the official Form-1 is designed to capture, while leaving document requirements to the office where you apply.

  1. Check whether the child already has a PPF account. Ask both parents and any other relevant guardian. The rule allows only one account in that minor’s name.
  2. Confirm your own contribution position. Add the amount you have deposited, or plan to deposit, in your individual PPF account to the amounts planned for all minor accounts opened by you. Keep the combined annual figure at or below ₹1,50,000.
  3. Obtain the current Form-1. Use the form supplied by the authorized bank or post office, or the current version published by the National Savings Institute. Avoid relying on an old form that displays historic limits.
  4. Complete the minor-account section. Identify the minor and indicate that the application is being made by the guardian. Enter the requested guardian information exactly as held in the supporting records.
  5. Complete the declarations about other PPF accounts. The form asks about existing accounts. Answer for the child and for the guardian as the form requires; do not omit an account to obtain a second allowance.
  6. Ask the office for its current supporting-document list. The official material confirms the form and the account rules but does not establish one complete document checklist for every bank and post office. Requirements relating to identity, the child’s age and the guardian-child relationship should therefore be confirmed locally before submission.
  7. Submit the application and initial deposit at the authorized office. Request an acknowledgement or account reference and check that the account is recorded in the minor’s name, with the correct guardian details.
  8. Keep the opening records and track deposits. Record the child’s account number, each deposit and your deposits into every PPF account that count toward your combined annual ceiling.

Worked family examples

One parent and one child

A parent already has a PPF account and wants to open one for a child. This is permitted. If the parent deposits ₹90,000 in the parent’s account and ₹60,000 in the child’s account, the combined amount is ₹1,50,000, which reaches the stated annual maximum without exceeding it.

One parent and two children

A parent may open one account for each of two minor children. Suppose the parent deposits ₹60,000 in the parent’s own account, ₹50,000 for the first child and ₹40,000 for the second child. The combined total is ₹1,50,000. Each child has one account, and the guardian’s total remains within the annual ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two parents trying to divide the allowance

Suppose one parent opens an account for a child and deposits ₹1,00,000, while the other parent attempts to open another account for the same child and deposits ₹50,000. The second account is not permitted merely because a different parent filed it. The one-account-per-minor rule and the contribution calculation are separate checks: the family must first have only one account in the child’s name, and each guardian must observe the applicable combined ceiling for their own account and minor accounts.

A child reaches adulthood

The material used for this eligibility answer does not establish the current procedure or timing for operating the account after the child becomes an adult. Before making a change based on age, ask the authorized office for the current process rather than relying on a general assumption.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting the child’s account as a fresh ₹1,50,000 limit. The guardian’s own and minor-account deposits are combined.
  • Opening one account with each parent. A particular minor may have only one PPF account across guardians.
  • Using historic figures from an old PDF. Earlier search results may show ₹1 lakh or ₹70,000 limits. Those are not the current figures used here; the amended 2020 scheme text states ₹1,50,000.
  • Forgetting the per-account minimum. Each account has a ₹500 annual minimum, with deposits in multiples of ₹50.
  • Assuming every office asks for identical documents. Confirm the current checklist with the bank or post office where you will apply.
  • Leaving the other-account declaration incomplete. Form-1 specifically addresses other PPF accounts, so provide complete and accurate information.

What this eligibility answer does not establish

Whether a child’s PPF account is suitable for your wider financial plan requires information beyond the account-count rule. The official material considered here does not establish the current interest rate, tax treatment, withdrawal conditions or maturity rules. Those terms can change under separate government notifications and should be checked in the current official PPF guidance before you make a long-term decision.

Which rule should you rely on?

Use the Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019, as amended by the Government of India notification dated 5 May 2020, for the controlling figures: one account on behalf of each minor for whom an individual is guardian, only one account in a particular minor’s name by any guardian, a ₹1,50,000 combined annual ceiling for the individual’s own and minor accounts, and a ₹500 minimum annual deposit in multiples of ₹50. The National Savings Institute’s official scheme clarification repeats the one-account and combined-ceiling points, while its official Form-1 shows how a guardian applies in the minor’s name and declares other PPF accounts.
