A 12% CAGR, a 12% XIRR, and a 12% TWR can describe three different experiences. The correct choice follows the question you are asking—not the size of the percentage.

Quick decision: which measure answers your question?
| Your question | Lead with | What it measures | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| How quickly did one investment grow from its starting value to its ending value? | CAGR | Equivalent annual compound growth between two values | Ignores the timing and size of intervening contributions or withdrawals and smooths the path |
| What annualized return did my invested dollars earn, given when I deposited and withdrew money? | XIRR | Money-weighted return using each cash flow’s amount and actual date | Depends on correct dates, signs, and ending valuation; it is not cash-flow-neutral |
| How did the portfolio or manager perform apart from my deposit and withdrawal decisions? | Time-weighted return (TWR) | Geometrically linked subperiod performance with external cash-flow effects neutralized | Needs reliable valuations and consistent treatment of every external flow; approximations can reduce accuracy |
For a personal account with one lump sum and no material external flows, CAGR and TWR may be close. Once deposits or withdrawals occur, XIRR reflects your experience while TWR is generally fairer for judging the investment process itself.

Why the same portfolio can have three different returns
Each method answers a different counterfactual:
- CAGR asks: What constant annual compound rate would turn the initial value into the final value over this duration?
- XIRR asks: What annual rate makes the dated deposits, withdrawals, and ending value balance in present-value terms?
- TWR asks: What did the portfolio earn during each interval, assuming external cash flows did not distort the interval return, and what is the compounded result of those intervals?
Investment returns also need a common measurement convention. Two figures are not comparable if they use different start or end dates, currencies, fee treatment, dividend treatment, valuation times, or annualization rules. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission warns that performance can be presented in many ways and that past performance does not necessarily predict future results; its Investor Bulletin: Performance Claims explains why the presentation method matters.

CAGR: a smoothed annual growth rate between two values
Formula and interpretation
For a single beginning value, a single ending value, and no material intervening external cash flows, calculate compound annual growth rate as:
CAGR = (ending value / beginning value)^(1 / years) - 1
If an investment rises from $10,000 to $14,641 over four years, the CAGR is 10% because $10,000 × 1.104 equals $14,641. The 10% is an equivalent rate, not a claim that the account gained exactly 10% in every calendar year. A volatile sequence of gains and losses can produce the same beginning and ending values.

GIPS describes annualized returns for periods longer than one year as geometric average compound returns and gives the equivalent form [(1 + R)^(1/n)] - 1. In a specified GIPS advertisement context, its guidance cautions against annualizing periods shorter than one year because doing so extends a partial-period result into a simulated annual result. That is standards-specific reporting guidance, not a universal prohibition on every personal calculation. See the GIPS Standards Handbook for Asset Owners.
When CAGR is the right tool
- Comparing two investments that each have one clearly defined starting value and ending value.
- Describing the long-run growth of a lump-sum investment when contributions and withdrawals were absent or immaterial.
- Converting a multi-year total return into one easy-to-compare annual compound rate.
Where CAGR misleads
A beginning-to-ending CAGR cannot tell whether you invested most of your money just before a rally or just before a decline. It also cannot incorporate recurring purchases, additional lump sums, partial withdrawals, or distributions that leave the account. Plugging only the first account value and last account value into the formula treats all capital as if it had been present from the first day.
CAGR also hides the path. Two portfolios can have identical CAGRs while one experienced a severe drawdown and the other climbed steadily. Pair it with annual returns, drawdowns, or volatility when the path matters.

XIRR: the annualized return on your actual cash flows
How money-weighted return works
XIRR is an annualized internal rate of return calculated from the amount and date of each cash flow. From the investor’s perspective, deposits are normally entered as negative amounts, withdrawals as positive amounts, and the ending account value as a final positive cash flow. The solver finds the rate that sets the present value of all dated cash flows to zero:
0 = Σ [cash flowi / (1 + r)^((datei - date0) / 365)]
The exact day-count convention is implemented by the spreadsheet or software you use; keep the same convention when comparing results. GIPS discusses Excel’s XIRR function as an annualized IRR tool and explains money-weighted return (MWR) calculations in its GIPS Standards Handbook for Firms. HSBC Asset Management’s XIRR vs CAGR explainer likewise describes XIRR as suited to periodic contributions, partial withdrawals, and additional lump sums.
How to calculate XIRR in a spreadsheet
- Create one column for transaction dates and another for cash-flow amounts.
- Enter every external deposit as a negative amount and every withdrawal as a positive amount, using the investor’s perspective consistently.
- Add a final row dated on the valuation date and enter the account’s market value as a positive amount. Include accrued income or other value that belongs in that valuation under your chosen reporting convention.
- Use
=XIRR(amount_range, date_range)in Excel, or the equivalent XIRR function in software that supports dated internal-rate calculations. - Check that the result is annualized, record the valuation date, and retain the cash-flow list so the result can be reproduced.
What XIRR tells you—and what it does not
XIRR answers, “What annualized return did my dollars earn?” A large contribution before a strong period increases the money-weighted result; a large contribution before a loss reduces it. That sensitivity is the point when you are evaluating your own outcome.
It is not a cash-flow-neutral measure of manager skill. GIPS describes MWR as reflecting the change in value plus the timing and size of external cash flows, and notes that it can explain a client’s experience but is less useful for comparing one firm or manager with another. The client-reporting explanation is available in the GIPS client reporting Q&A; the current standards provisions are in the handbooks.

- Wrong signs: If deposits and withdrawals are reversed, the result describes a different cash-flow perspective or may fail to solve.
- Missing transactions: Leaving out a deposit, withdrawal, fee, or distribution changes the return.
- Stale ending value: The terminal valuation is a cash flow in the equation. Using an old price or a value from a different date changes XIRR.
- Multiple sign changes: Cash-flow sequences that switch between negative and positive more than once can have more than one mathematical solution. A spreadsheet’s starting guess can affect which solution it finds, so inspect the sequence and solver output instead of assuming uniqueness.
- Mixed conventions: Combining a net-of-fee ending value with gross cash flows, or mixing currencies, produces an internally inconsistent result.

TWR divides the measurement period at each external cash flow, calculates the portfolio return for every subperiod, and geometrically links those returns:

TWR = [(1 + r1) × (1 + r2) × ... × (1 + rn)] - 1
To calculate an exact subperiod return, value the portfolio immediately before the external flow and again at the next required valuation point. A simple subperiod with no flow is (ending value / beginning value) - 1. At a flow, the valuation separates market performance from the capital added or removed. The process is repeated for the full period, then the subperiod returns are linked rather than averaged arithmetically.
The GIPS Standards Handbook for Asset Owners describes the objective this way: TWRs measure the asset owner’s performance and attempt to negate or neutralize the effect of external cash flows that enter or exit a total fund or portfolio.
Dividends and interest generated within the portfolio are not external cash flows in that discussion; they remain part of investment performance. See the handbook’s TWR guidance.
Why managers and benchmarks usually use TWR
If a client decides to add money after a rally or withdraw it before a recovery, those decisions should not automatically make the manager look better or worse. TWR removes that client-controlled timing effect, making it the more appropriate lens for comparing a portfolio process with a benchmark or comparing managers when the manager does not control external flows.
GIPS provisions generally require TWR for covered firm composite reporting unless specified conditions permit a money-weighted approach—for example, circumstances involving firm control of external cash flows and certain closed-end, fixed-life, fixed-commitment, or illiquid investments. Those are GIPS reporting requirements for their defined scope, not a universal mandate for every personal account or jurisdiction. Consult the GIPS Standards Handbook for Firms for the conditions.
Valuation accuracy and practical approximations
A “true” TWR values the portfolio and calculates a return at every external cash flow. That is the most accurate method, but many accounts are not valued continuously. The asset-owner handbook discusses valuing at each large external flow and using daily-weighted flow adjustments for smaller flows when daily valuation is unavailable. Modified Dietz and IRR can estimate TWR under the circumstances described in the handbook, but they are not automatically identical to an exact, flow-by-flow TWR.

- Use transaction-time valuations when prices are reliable and the flow is large enough to matter.
- Document the valuation time zone, pricing source, and treatment of pending trades.
- Classify external deposits and withdrawals consistently; do not classify portfolio-generated dividends or interest as client flows merely because cash was distributed.
- State whether the result is gross or net of management fees, trading costs, and other expenses.
A worked hypothetical: why timing changes XIRR but not TWR in the same way
Consider this deliberately simplified, hypothetical account (the figures are illustrative inputs, not a historical performance claim):
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Date | Event | Account value or cash flow |
|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Opening deposit | -$10,000 |
| June 30 | Portfolio value before a new deposit | $12,000 |
| July 1 | Additional deposit | -$90,000 |
| December 31 | Ending portfolio value | $102,000 |
The first subperiod earned 20%: $10,000 became $12,000. The July 1 deposit is external capital, so a TWR calculation starts a new subperiod after the deposit. The second subperiod ended at $102,000, which is exactly the $12,000 carried forward plus the $90,000 deposit; its market return for this simplified example is 0%. Linking the two subperiods gives a 20% TWR for the two intervals under the stated dates.
XIRR uses the three dated cash flows—$10,000 out on January 1, $90,000 out on July 1, and $102,000 in on December 31—and solves for one annualized rate. Because most of the investor’s dollars arrived after the 20% gain, XIRR will not equal the TWR. The example shows why reporting one as if it were the other can misstate either investor experience or portfolio performance.
How to choose and report a return responsibly
- Write the question first. Choose CAGR for a two-value growth summary, XIRR for your dated capital experience, or TWR for cash-flow-neutralized portfolio performance.
- Set identical boundaries. Use the same start date, end date, valuation time, currency, and account or portfolio scope for every comparison.
- List every external flow. For XIRR, record amount and actual date. For TWR, identify each flow and the valuation needed to split subperiods.
- Define income and fees. State whether dividends and interest are reinvested or paid out, and whether fees and expenses are included. GIPS treats portfolio-generated dividend and interest payments as investment activity rather than external cash flows in its TWR discussion.
- Check annualization. Label a total-period return separately from an annualized return. Be especially cautious about annualizing periods shorter than one year in contexts governed by GIPS advertising provisions.
- Preserve the inputs. Keep transaction dates, valuations, prices, fee records, and the calculation formula. A percentage without its inputs cannot be audited or fairly compared.
Common comparison mistakes
Calling an ending-value calculation XIRR
Entering only an opening value and a closing value into an XIRR function produces a dated IRR for those entries, but it does not account for transactions you omitted. If there were deposits or withdrawals, include them.
Using CAGR for a savings plan
Regular purchases mean different dollars were invested for different lengths of time. A first-to-last balance CAGR treats them as if all capital were present on day one. Use XIRR for the investor’s result and TWR when evaluating the underlying portfolio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteComparing gross and net figures
A manager’s gross TWR and an investor’s net-of-fee XIRR answer different questions. Align fee treatment before drawing a conclusion.

Annualizing a partial period without labeling it
An annualized number can look more dramatic than the total return earned over a short interval. Show the dates and identify the annualization basis; do not imply that a simulated annual rate is a forecast.
Ranking managers by client-level XIRR
Two clients in the same strategy can have different XIRRs solely because they contributed or withdrew at different times. Use a comparable TWR, subject to the valuation and flow-treatment limitations, when the question is manager performance.
What to put in a performance statement
A useful statement identifies the measure in the label itself: for example, “XIRR, January 1–December 31, net of stated fees, using all external cash flows and December 31 market value.” A TWR statement should identify the valuation frequency or approximation used, and a CAGR statement should identify the beginning and ending values and the exact duration.
Recommended Free Tools
When two measures are shown together, explain their roles rather than presenting them as competing scores: “The portfolio’s TWR describes investment performance after external-flow timing was neutralized; the account XIRR describes the return earned by this investor’s dated contributions and withdrawals.”
Bottom line
There is no universally best return measure. CAGR is the cleanest summary for one lump sum held from a defined start to a defined finish. XIRR is the most relevant answer for what your actual dollars earned when deposits and withdrawals occurred on irregular dates. TWR is usually the fairest measure for comparing a portfolio or manager because it neutralizes external cash-flow timing, provided valuations and flow classifications are sound. Report the method, dates, cash flows, fees, income treatment, and annualization basis every time.
