It is an arrangement that moves uninvested brokerage cash—often each business day—to a destination selected by the brokerage, such as an insured-bank deposit account or a money market mutual fund. A bank savings account is a deposit account you open directly with a bank. Because the sweep destination determines insurance, yield, and access, the word “sweep” by itself does not tell you where your money is held or whether it has FDIC coverage.
To compare the two, identify the actual destination, the bank or fund involved, the current rate and conditions, applicable insurance rules, fees, and how quickly you can use or withdraw the cash. FINRA’s guidance puts the decision plainly: “Make sure your cash is in the best place for you, whether that means maximizing your interest rate or other considerations.” FINRA Staff, August 21, 2023

What a brokerage cash sweep does
When you sell an investment, receive a dividend, or deposit money that you have not yet invested, the balance generally appears as cash in your brokerage account. A cash-sweep program automatically handles that balance according to the brokerage agreement. The program may move the money daily to one or more bank deposit accounts, purchase shares of a money market mutual fund, or leave the amount as a free credit balance in the brokerage account. FINRA describes all three possibilities, so two accounts both labeled “cash sweep” can have materially different protections and returns.

Bank-deposit sweep
Under a bank sweep, the brokerage places qualifying deposits at one or more participating banks. The brokerage remains your account provider, but the underlying cash is a bank deposit. The program documents should identify the banks, how balances are allocated, and how interest is calculated. Deposit-insurance treatment depends on the structure and on whether the records satisfy the requirements for pass-through coverage.

Money market mutual-fund sweep
A money market mutual fund invests in short-term securities and issues fund shares. It is an investment product, not a bank deposit, and the FDIC lists money market mutual funds among products it does not insure. A fund sweep can still be convenient for investing cash, but it should not be described as an FDIC-insured savings balance.
Free credit balance
Some brokerages leave uninvested money as a free credit balance rather than sweeping it elsewhere. The brokerage statement and customer agreement should say whether this is the current arrangement and what rate, if any, applies. Do not infer the destination from a generic label in an account interface.
What a bank savings account is
A bank savings account is opened directly with an insured bank and is governed by that bank’s deposit agreement. The bank sets the interest rate, withdrawal rules, minimum balance, fees, and available access tools. If the account is at an FDIC-insured bank and is a qualifying deposit, the standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. That limit includes principal and accrued interest through the date the bank closes, subject to the applicable ownership rules. See the FDIC’s Deposit Insurance at a Glance for the current framework.

The usual structure is therefore different: a savings account is the product itself, while a sweep is a cash-management instruction attached to another account. The terms of an individual savings account still control its rate, fees, and access; “savings” does not guarantee a particular yield or number of withdrawals.

How FDIC insurance applies to sweep cash
When a bank sweep may be covered
A sweep deposit can receive FDIC coverage when it is held at an FDIC-insured bank and qualifies under the insurance rules. In a brokerage arrangement, coverage may pass through the brokerage to you if the bank, the brokerage’s records, the ownership category, and the account documentation meet the applicable requirements. The identity of the bank matters: coverage is calculated separately by insured bank, not simply by brokerage account label.
The FDIC’s Deposit Broker’s Processing Guide explains the recordkeeping and ownership information used for pass-through treatment. Ask the brokerage which bank holds your funds, how your beneficial ownership is recorded, and whether the program uses multiple banks.

How the $250,000 limit is counted
The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. You must aggregate qualifying deposits you already hold at the same bank in the same ownership category with the amount in the sweep. A sweep spread among several participating banks can therefore have a different insurance result from a sweep concentrated at one bank. The limit includes principal and accrued interest through the insured bank’s closing date, not just the original amount deposited.
What is not covered by FDIC insurance
A money market mutual fund is not a bank deposit and is not FDIC-insured. The FDIC’s list of financial products that are not insured distinguishes these funds from insured deposit accounts. A free credit balance also requires you to read the brokerage agreement rather than assume that it is an insured bank deposit.
Why the statement and program disclosure matter
Brokerages can change the sweep program, participating banks, or allocation method. Your statement should identify the current cash program and balance, while the account agreement and program disclosure explain insurance and access. If the documents are unclear, request the current sweep-bank list and insurance explanation from the brokerage before treating the balance as insured.

Which one pays more interest?
There is no universal winner. Rates vary by brokerage, bank, sweep destination, account type, balance, and market conditions, and they can change without changing the name of the account. FINRA’s August 21, 2023 investor guidance says rates for money market funds, bank sweep programs, and free credit balances can sometimes be nearly the same; in a higher-rate environment, the difference can be as much as 5 percent. That is a general context statement from FINRA, not a current quote or forecast for any particular account.
Compare the live disclosed rate for the exact brokerage program with the live rate for the exact savings account. Check whether the quoted figure is variable, whether a minimum balance or tier applies, how often interest is credited, and whether fees reduce the return. A higher advertised rate may not be better if it applies only to a limited balance or requires conditions you will not meet.
Access, liquidity, and everyday use
A brokerage sweep is designed to sit beside investing. Cash can be available for a trade, settlement, or transfer without opening a separate bank relationship. Some programs also provide bill payment, a debit card, or check writing, but those features are program-specific. Confirm the actual settlement and withdrawal timing, transfer limits, and any holds in the brokerage agreement.

A bank savings account follows the bank’s own access rules. It may support online transfers, linked checking, automated deposits, or cards, but the exact features and fees differ by account. If you need frequent transactions, compare the practical payment tools and transfer timing rather than focusing only on the interest rate.
How to compare your own accounts: a step-by-step checklist
- Locate the current documents. Open the latest brokerage statement, cash-management disclosure, and account agreement, then find the section naming the cash program and current balance.
- Identify the destination. Determine whether the money is in a bank deposit, a money market mutual fund, or a free credit balance. Do not rely on the word “sweep” alone.
- Record every bank involved. For a bank sweep, list each participating insured bank and how the program allocates your balance among them.
- Check insurance conditions. Read whether pass-through coverage is available, how your ownership is recorded, and what circumstances could prevent coverage. If necessary, ask the brokerage for a written explanation.
- Aggregate existing deposits. Add your other deposits at each destination bank in the same ownership category before comparing the total with the $250,000 limit.
- Capture the live economics. Write down the current rate, whether it can change, minimums, balance tiers, fees, and any conditions for earning the stated rate. Make the same record for the bank savings account.
- Test access requirements. Confirm how to move cash to a checking account, pay a bill, use a card, write a check, or make an investment, including expected processing times and limits.
- Match the arrangement to the purpose. Decide whether the cash is mainly for imminent investing, short-term transactions, emergency reserves, or a longer holding period. Choose based on the combination of insurance, yield, access, and terms rather than one feature.
Common situations and the right questions
Cash waiting to be invested
If money is temporarily awaiting a purchase, the convenience of an integrated sweep may matter more than moving it to a separate bank. Still verify whether the sweep is a deposit, fund, or free credit balance and how quickly it can be used for a trade.
Emergency or operating cash
For money you may need to spend, examine payment features, transfer timing, withdrawal limits, and insurance status. A bank sweep can be convenient, but only the qualifying deposit portion receives FDIC treatment; a fund sweep does not.

Map the balance by insured bank and ownership category, including accrued interest and other deposits. A program using several banks may allocate funds differently from the way you assume. Ask how the allocation changes when your balance rises and whether you can select or exclude participating banks.
Seeking the highest available rate
Use current disclosures, not a general market headline or an old comparison. Ask for the rate today, the date it was set, whether it is variable, and what conditions apply. FINRA specifically advises investors to ask which alternative offers the highest interest rate while also considering other priorities.
Pitfalls that cause mistaken comparisons
- Assuming every sweep is FDIC-insured. The destination may be a money market mutual fund or another arrangement that is not a deposit.
- Assuming every sweep is uninsured. A qualifying bank deposit can receive pass-through coverage when the program and records meet the requirements.
- Counting coverage by brokerage instead of bank. FDIC limits apply by depositor, insured bank, and ownership category, so deposits at the same bank must be combined.
- Using an old rate. Sweep and savings rates are provider-specific and can change; verify the current disclosure before deciding.
- Ignoring the free-credit-balance option. Money that remains at the brokerage may have different terms from both a bank sweep and a fund sweep.
- Comparing yield without access costs. Transfer delays, minimums, fees, and payment limitations can matter more than a small rate difference for money you use often.
- Relying on a product name. Names such as “cash management” or “sweep” do not replace the program disclosure, statement, and bank list.
Questions to ask your brokerage or bank
- Where exactly is my uninvested cash held today?
- If it is a bank sweep, which insured banks participate, and how is my balance allocated?
- What records establish my ownership for pass-through insurance?
- How much of my existing balance at each destination bank is already counted in the same ownership category?
- What is the current interest rate, when can it change, and are there tiers, minimums, or fees?
- Can I use the cash for trades, transfers, bill payment, debit-card purchases, or checks, and how long does each transaction take?
- Where in my statement or agreement will the program and balance be identified?
Bottom line
A brokerage cash sweep is a routing arrangement; a bank savings account is a bank deposit account. The sweep’s destination—not its name—determines whether the cash may receive FDIC insurance, how it earns interest, and how you can access it. Read the current brokerage disclosure, identify the bank or fund, apply the $250,000-per-bank-and-ownership-category rules where relevant, and compare the live rate and access terms with the specific savings account you are considering. That process answers the practical question FINRA poses: which alternative is best for your cash, given both return and protection.
