Broadcom and AMD are not mirror-image AI companies. Broadcom supplies custom accelerators, networking silicon and VMware infrastructure software that can sit behind many AI deployments. AMD competes more visibly with EPYC server CPUs, Instinct GPUs, ROCm software and rack-scale systems. They overlap in infrastructure, but they can also be partners: Broadcom’s VMware AI Factory pairs VMware Cloud Foundation with AMD Instinct GPUs and ROCm.

Broadcom and AMD occupy different layers of the AI stack

The simplest way to understand the comparison is to separate where each company makes money from what an AI system needs. Broadcom’s AI exposure is concentrated in components and infrastructure software. Its semiconductor business includes custom AI accelerators designed for specific customers and high-speed networking products that connect processors, memory and servers. Its infrastructure-software business includes VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), used to operate private-cloud and enterprise environments.

AMD’s data-center business is easier to recognize as a conventional compute platform. It combines EPYC server processors, Instinct accelerator GPUs and the ROCm software stack. AMD is also moving toward complete rack-scale systems, in which CPUs, GPUs, networking, software and system integration are designed to work together.

That difference matters for anyone evaluating the companies as businesses. A Broadcom accelerator or network chip may be embedded in an AI system that customers never associate with Broadcom. AMD’s Instinct brand, by contrast, is directly visible to cloud providers and enterprises buying accelerator capacity. “Backstage” and “spotlight” describe business visibility, not a verified market-share ranking.

What Broadcom’s AI business includes

Custom AI accelerators

Broadcom designs application-specific AI accelerators for large technology customers. These are not necessarily general-purpose products sold through a standard retail channel. They are customized to a customer’s workload, data-center architecture and software requirements. The economic attraction is a large, repeatable infrastructure program when a customer deploys the design at scale.

Broadcom’s FY2026 third-quarter results reported $16.7 billion in AI semiconductor revenue, up 221% year over year. Chief executive Hock Tan said, “Demand for our custom AI accelerators and networking continues to be very strong.” Both the revenue figure and the quotation are company disclosures, not an independent estimate of the total AI-chip market.

Networking silicon

AI clusters need far more networking capacity than a typical enterprise server environment. Accelerators must exchange model parameters and training data with low delay, while switches and connectivity products move traffic among racks and storage systems. Broadcom sells silicon into that networking layer, so its AI exposure can increase even when a customer uses another company’s accelerator.

VMware Cloud Foundation

Broadcom’s infrastructure-software segment includes VMware Cloud Foundation. The company’s FY2026 third-quarter filing said software growth was driven primarily by VCF demand. In that quarter, semiconductor solutions represented 70% of Broadcom’s net revenue and infrastructure software represented 30%; across the first three fiscal quarters, the split was 68% and 32%.

VCF gives Broadcom a route into the operational side of private AI: virtualization, management, security and deployment of workloads across enterprise infrastructure. It does not make Broadcom a GPU vendor in the same sense as AMD. Instead, it can become the software layer through which organizations deploy and administer systems containing GPUs from AMD or other suppliers.

AMD’s visible AI strategy

EPYC server CPUs

EPYC processors are the host CPUs that run operating systems, databases, orchestration software and parts of AI workloads around accelerator systems. AMD’s Data Center segment includes EPYC revenue, so the segment is broader than GPU sales alone.

Instinct accelerators

Instinct GPUs target model training, inference and high-performance computing. AMD’s FY2025 annual results said Data Center revenue reached $16.6 billion, up 32% from $12.6 billion in 2024, primarily because of EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 Series GPUs. That is a full-year segment figure, not a standalone Instinct figure.

MI400 and Helios

AMD has announced the MI400 family and the Helios rack-scale system as parts of a broader platform strategy. A rack-scale design coordinates multiple GPUs, EPYC CPUs, networking and software as a system rather than selling an accelerator in isolation. AMD’s FY2026 second-quarter materials also described deployment plans and collaborations involving Helios, MI400, Anthropic, Microsoft Azure and other organizations. These are company-announced plans and partnerships; they should not be treated as realized revenue, delivered capacity or proof of market share.

ROCm software

ROCm is AMD’s software platform for programming and operating workloads on its accelerators. Software compatibility, libraries, developer tools and support can determine whether a customer can move an existing model to a different GPU platform without rewriting large portions of its stack. AMD presents ROCm as part of its effort to give customers an alternative accelerator ecosystem, but adoption varies by workload and organization.

The reported numbers are not an apples-to-apples contest

Broadcom’s AI semiconductor revenue and AMD’s Data Center revenue measure different things. Broadcom’s number isolates AI-related semiconductor sales, while AMD’s segment includes both server CPUs and accelerator GPUs. The periods also differ.

Company and period Reported measure Amount Year-over-year change What it includes
Broadcom FY2026 Q3 AI semiconductor revenue $16.7 billion +221% AI-related custom accelerators and networking semiconductors, as reported by Broadcom
Broadcom FY2026 Q3 Total consolidated revenue $29.6 billion +86% Semiconductor solutions plus infrastructure software and other consolidated activity
AMD FY2026 Q2 Data Center segment revenue $6.7 billion +107% EPYC processors, Instinct GPUs and related Data Center products
AMD FY2025 Data Center segment revenue $16.6 billion +32% from $12.6 billion in 2024 Annual Data Center segment, primarily EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 Series GPUs

It would be misleading to divide or rank these figures as though they were equivalent market shares. Broadcom’s quarterly AI-semiconductor figure is not the same scope as AMD’s quarterly or annual Data Center segment. The available company materials do not establish either company’s share of a clearly defined AI-accelerator or networking market.

Where the companies compete—and where they cooperate

Competition for infrastructure budgets

Both companies benefit when organizations expand AI data centers, but they can compete for parts of the same bill of materials. AMD may sell an Instinct-based platform that includes CPUs and system components. Broadcom may supply custom accelerators or networking silicon used in a customer’s internally designed platform. Enterprise buyers and cloud operators decide whether to purchase an integrated system, combine components themselves or use a private-cloud platform.

VMware AI Factory

Broadcom’s VMware AI Factory announcement describes VCF paired with AMD Instinct GPUs and ROCm. It also references certified AI ReadyNodes from Cisco, Dell Technologies, Lenovo and Supermicro. The announced combination is a validated path for private AI according to AMD’s statement; that characterization comes from the partners, not independent testing.

Suresh Andani of AMD said, “Enterprises adopting AI need freedom to choose their infrastructure without locking into a single vendor stack.” In practical terms, the partnership lets an organization use AMD accelerators inside a VMware-managed environment. Broadcom can expand the software and infrastructure footprint, while AMD gains a supported route into enterprise deployments that already use VCF.

Multi-accelerator support

VCF 9.1 describes support for multiple accelerator choices, including AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, as well as AMD and Intel CPU platforms. This approach positions VMware as an orchestration and private-cloud layer rather than a commitment to one accelerator supplier. Any performance or cost improvements stated in the VCF announcement are vendor-provided claims and should be evaluated against an organization’s own workload, licensing and operating costs.

How to interpret the business momentum

Use same-period, same-definition comparisons

For a financial comparison, first align fiscal periods. AMD’s $6.7 billion figure is FY2026 Q2 Data Center revenue; Broadcom’s $16.7 billion figure is FY2026 Q3 AI semiconductor revenue. Neither should be presented as a direct quarterly head-to-head. A fairer analysis would require matching quarters and a common definition such as total Data Center revenue, accelerator revenue or networking revenue.

Separate growth from durability

Broadcom’s 221% AI-semiconductor growth rate shows rapid expansion in the reported period, but custom-chip programs can be concentrated among a small number of large customers. AMD’s 107% quarterly Data Center growth and 32% annual growth show strong expansion in its broader segment, but that segment includes multiple product lines. Investors should examine customer concentration, product timing, margins, inventories, capital spending by cloud providers and the continuity of software adoption before extrapolating one quarter.

Distinguish announcements from revenue

A product roadmap, cloud collaboration or planned deployment can expand a company’s opportunity without contributing revenue immediately. AMD’s Helios and MI400 announcements and its named collaborations demonstrate strategic direction. They do not, by themselves, establish shipment volume, profitability or market share. Likewise, Broadcom’s VMware AI Factory announcement demonstrates integration across the stack, not a guaranteed level of customer adoption.

A practical framework for evaluating Broadcom versus AMD

  1. Define the exposure you want. If you are studying custom silicon and networking, Broadcom is the more direct subject. If you are studying merchant server CPUs, accelerator GPUs and rack-scale systems, AMD’s Data Center segment is the closer fit.
  2. Check the reporting category. Read whether a figure is AI semiconductor revenue, total semiconductor revenue, infrastructure-software revenue or AMD Data Center revenue. Do not combine categories without explaining the difference.
  3. Map the customer relationship. Broadcom may sell components or software to a system builder, while AMD may sell branded processors and accelerators to a cloud provider or enterprise. Visibility in the final product is not the same as economic importance.
  4. Evaluate software lock-in and portability. Consider VCF management and virtualization on one side, and ROCm libraries, developer tooling and application compatibility on the other. Switching costs depend on the customer’s existing environment.
  5. Read deployment evidence conservatively. Treat announced partnerships as evidence of a route to market. Look for subsequent disclosures showing orders, shipments, recognized revenue or operating results before assigning financial value.
  6. Recheck volatile information. Quarterly results, product schedules, customer programs and guidance can change. Broadcom’s Q4 AI-revenue figure in its results release is management guidance, not an actual result.

Key risks and limitations for readers

  • Customer concentration: Custom accelerators can depend on a limited group of very large buyers.
  • Execution risk: Rack-scale systems require coordinated hardware, networking, software and manufacturing execution.
  • Software adoption risk: A capable GPU does not guarantee that developers will port applications or that ROCm will support every desired workload.
  • Cycle risk: Data-center capital spending can accelerate or pause as customers digest prior investments.
  • Accounting-scope risk: Segment definitions can change how growth appears, making headline percentages easy to misread.
  • Guidance risk: Forecast revenue is inherently less certain than reported revenue.

Bottom line: a stack comparison, not a simple winner

Broadcom’s strength is breadth behind the scenes: custom AI silicon, networking and an infrastructure-software platform that can manage private AI environments. AMD’s strength is a more visible compute proposition spanning EPYC CPUs, Instinct GPUs, ROCm and announced rack-scale systems. Their businesses overlap, but the VMware AI Factory shows that they can also reinforce one another. The reported numbers indicate strong growth for both companies in their respective categories, yet they do not support a direct market-share winner or a clean revenue ranking. For investors and technology buyers, the useful question is which layer of the AI infrastructure stack—and which type of customer relationship—best matches the exposure they want to understand.
