Social Security should be treated as one layer of retirement income, not the entire plan. The 2026 Trustees summary projects the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) reserve can pay full scheduled benefits through the fourth quarter of 2032. At reserve depletion, continuing income is projected to cover 78% of scheduled benefits under the report’s intermediate assumptions. That is a financing projection—not a forecast that checks will stop on that date— but it is a strong reason for people nearing retirement to test whether savings and investments can cover the rest of their spending.
What the Social Security projection means for a boomer’s plan
The Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees’ 2026 summary reports 62.3 million OASI beneficiaries and 8.2 million Disability Insurance beneficiaries at the end of 2025, with $2,338.3 billion in OASI reserves. The same summary projects full scheduled OASI benefits through the fourth quarter of 2032, followed by 78% payable from continuing income when the reserve is depleted, assuming the report’s intermediate projections.

The date and percentage can change as payroll-tax income, benefit claims, legislation, wages and the economy change. They should be used as a stress-test assumption rather than a promise of a specific future cut. A household that needs every scheduled dollar should model what happens if Social Security supplies less of its planned income.
Start with your own benefit, spending and claiming choices
Get estimates at several claiming ages
Social Security benefits are personal. The Social Security Administration says the monthly amount depends on lifetime earnings and the age at which benefits begin; claiming earlier generally produces a smaller monthly payment. Open or review a my Social Security account and use the Retirement Estimator to record estimates at different claiming ages. Do not substitute an average benefit for your household’s record.

Delaying a claim increases the eventual monthly payment. Investor.gov states that putting off Social Security until you are older can increase the monthly payment. The trade-off is that you need other income—continued wages, cash or portfolio withdrawals—to fund the years before claiming, and the best choice depends on health, longevity expectations, marital status, survivor needs, taxes and spending.
Build a spending floor before choosing investments
List essential monthly costs separately from discretionary spending. Include housing, utilities, food, insurance, debt payments, taxes, expected health-care costs and a cash reserve for emergencies. Then list guaranteed income such as pensions and the Social Security estimates. The gap is the amount that savings, investments or continued work must cover.

Health and long-term-care costs can be uneven, so a plan that works only in an average year is fragile. Keep an emergency reserve in an accessible, low-volatility account rather than relying on stocks for a near-term bill.

| Account | Tax treatment | Employer match | Withdrawals and investment choices |
|---|---|---|---|
| 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) | Varies by traditional or Roth contributions and plan rules; taxes may be deferred or paid up front. | Only available if the employer offers it; capture the full available match before making other contributions. | Withdrawal rules, fees and the fund menu are set by the plan. Review each document. |
| IRA | Traditional and Roth treatment differs; eligibility, deductions and conversions depend on income and tax rules. | Not an employer-match account. | Usually offers a broader investment menu than a workplace plan, but account and fund costs still vary. |
| Taxable brokerage account | No retirement-account tax shelter; interest, dividends and realized gains may be taxable in the year they occur. | Not applicable. | Generally flexible access and a broad investment menu, with taxes and fees determined by the holdings and provider. |
Check contribution limits before increasing payroll deductions
Investor.gov’s 2025 examples list a $23,500 workplace-plan contribution limit, a $7,500 catch-up for most people ages 50–59 and 64 or older, and a $7,000 IRA limit plus a $1,000 catch-up. These are examples for that year, not permanent numbers. Verify the current IRS limits, your plan’s rules and any age-specific provisions before changing contributions.
Make the employer match the first checkpoint
If a workplace plan offers matching contributions, contribute enough to receive the full match when the household can afford it. Investor.gov describes the match as an immediate return on the employee’s contribution. Check the vesting schedule, per-paycheck requirements and whether the plan imposes a true-up rule; missing those details can leave part of the available match unclaimed.

Invest for the time horizon you actually have
There is no stock percentage, expected return or withdrawal rate that fits every boomer. The appropriate mix depends on when the money will be needed, risk tolerance, taxes, health, debt, other income and the ability to keep working. Investor.gov advises investors to consider how much risk they are willing to take with their money.
Use diversification instead of a single bet
Spread exposure across asset classes and holdings rather than relying on one company, sector or narrow market. Diversified funds and target-date funds can provide a packaged approach, but compare their asset mix, fees, glide path and whether the allocation fits your retirement date. A target-date label does not guarantee a safe result or a particular income.

Match risk to withdrawals
Money needed in the next few years should not depend entirely on assets that can fall sharply. A longer-term portion can tolerate more market fluctuation if the household has cash, guaranteed income or flexible spending to avoid selling after a decline. Rebalance according to a written policy rather than reacting to headlines, and review total fees because small recurring charges reduce the balance available for retirement.
Stress-test Social Security and market outcomes
- Enter essential spending, discretionary spending, debt payments, emergency cash and expected medical costs in a household budget.
- Record Social Security estimates at multiple claiming ages and add pensions or other guaranteed income.
- Calculate the annual amount the portfolio must supply under the scheduled-benefit estimate.
- Run a second case using 78% of scheduled OASI benefits beginning at the projected fourth-quarter 2032 depletion point. Label this as a stress test, not a guaranteed reduction.
- Test a market decline early in retirement, higher inflation, a longer life and a period of unemployment. Identify which expenses could be postponed and which cannot.
- Decide whether continued work, a later claim, lower spending or higher saving closes the gap without assuming an unverified return.
Debt, fees and advice can change the answer
Paying down high-cost debt may improve retirement resilience more reliably than taking additional investment risk. Keep enough emergency cash to avoid borrowing or selling volatile assets for an unexpected repair or medical bill.
Review fund expense ratios, account fees, transaction charges and advisory costs in the documents for each account. Before hiring an investment professional, check the person’s registration and disciplinary history through Investor.gov. Fees, conflicts and the services included should be clear in writing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical annual checklist
- Review the Social Security earnings record and estimates in your my Social Security account.
- Update essential spending, taxes, debt, emergency savings and health-cost assumptions.
- Confirm that workplace contributions capture the full available match.
- Verify current workplace-plan and IRA limits and the tax treatment of each contribution.
- Check diversification, investment risk, fees and the rebalancing policy.
- Re-run the scheduled-benefit case and the 78%-payable stress test.
- Revisit the plan after changes in tax law, health, employment, marital status or household income.
Investing more today can give a boomer more flexibility to delay Social Security, absorb a lower-than-scheduled benefit or pay for an unexpectedly long retirement. The amount and account choice should come from the household’s verified cash-flow gap and risk capacity—not from a universal rule.
