Bloom Energy and FuelCell Energy both develop stationary fuel-cell power systems, but they are not selling the same technology or following the same commercial model. Bloom’s main commercial platform is the solid-oxide Energy Server, often owned by a financier or strategic partner that sells power to the end user. FuelCell Energy’s commercial systems use molten-carbonate fuel cells, and the company describes a broader role that can include manufacturing, project development, installation, operation, maintenance, carbon capture, hydrogen-related applications and useful thermal energy.
The latest figures are also measured over different periods: Bloom’s reported calendar year ended December 31, 2025, versus FuelCell Energy’s fiscal third quarter ended July 31, 2026. Their backlog definitions and project statuses differ, so the numbers should not be treated as a like-for-like investment comparison.

The key differences at a glance
| Comparison point | Bloom Energy | FuelCell Energy |
|---|---|---|
| Core commercial technology | Solid-oxide Energy Server platform. | Molten-carbonate fuel-cell systems. |
| Typical commercial role | May sell systems to financiers, strategic partners, distributors or end users. | Important evidence limit | Financial, backlog and customer-concentration figures are company-reported. | Operating claims, efficiency figures, backlog, agreements and capacity plans are company-reported and have different status levels. |
The practical distinction is not simply that one company uses a different fuel cell. Bloom is principally presented as a distributed solid-oxide power-platform supplier, while FuelCell Energy presents a more vertically involved project and infrastructure business built around molten-carbonate systems and related energy services.
How the two fuel-cell technologies differ
Bloom’s solid-oxide Energy Server
Bloom’s principal commercial product is the Energy Server, a solid-oxide fuel-cell platform. Bloom’s filings describe the company’s solid-oxide expertise and a deployment model in which equipment can be sold to a financier or strategic partner that owns the system and supplies power to the customer.

That ownership structure matters when assessing what a Bloom “sale” represents. The contractual buyer may be a project-finance affiliate or another intermediary rather than the business that ultimately consumes the electricity. Bloom says many end users prefer to pay for power instead of owning the Energy Server themselves. Consequently, a headline about Bloom selling systems should not automatically be read as a direct equipment sale to the final electricity user.
FuelCell Energy’s molten-carbonate systems
FuelCell Energy’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its commercially available core systems as molten-carbonate fuel cells. The company says the platform can use biofuels, renewable natural gas, or hydrogen-hydrocarbon blends. It positions the systems for baseload electricity and for configurations that also provide carbon capture or useful heat.
FuelCell Energy identifies utilities, independent power producers, data centers, wastewater-treatment facilities, commercial and hospitality sites, and microgrids as target applications. Its system descriptions include thermal energy that can support chilling, heating or process steam, so the relevant output may be more than electricity alone.

FuelCell Energy also describes solid-oxide electrolysis for distributed hydrogen as an advanced technology program. That does not make its commercial platform the same as Bloom’s Energy Server. In a comparison, distinguish FuelCell Energy’s commercially available molten-carbonate systems from its advanced solid-oxide electrolysis work.
Neither company’s product descriptions establish that a particular installation will have the same efficiency, cost, emissions profile or operating life as an installation from the other company. Fuel type, configuration, heat use, financing structure and site requirements all affect the result.
How their customer and project models differ
Bloom’s equipment-and-power arrangements
Bloom says it sells to financiers, strategic partners, distributors and end users. Its filing says most end users to date prefer paying for power, with a financier or strategic partner owning the Energy Server used to supply that power.
The filing also reports that three customers or distributors represented approximately 43%, 13% and 12% of Bloom’s 2025 revenue. Those percentages describe revenue concentration, not the share of electricity consumed by three end users. Bloom cautions that the term customer can mean a contractual counterparty or project-finance affiliate rather than the ultimate power user.
For an investor, this structure creates two separate questions: who signed the contract, and who ultimately needs the electricity? For a prospective power customer, it creates a different question: will the site buy equipment, buy electricity under a power arrangement, or work through a strategic or financing partner?

FuelCell Energy’s vertically involved model
FuelCell Energy describes a broader role that includes designing and manufacturing systems, developing projects, installing equipment, operating plants and providing maintenance. Its revenue sources include recurring and non-recurring activities. That means its business cannot be reduced to equipment sales alone or to ownership of power-generating plants alone.
A project can therefore expose FuelCell Energy to several stages of execution: manufacturing and delivery, construction or installation, long-term operations, maintenance and, in some cases, project-development or power-generation economics. Each stage has its own timing and margin characteristics, so quarterly revenue may not move in step with announced capacity.
Where the companies overlap—and where FuelCell Energy is more explicit
Both companies address stationary power for large commercial, industrial, infrastructure and utility customers. That overlap explains why they are often compared by investors looking at data-center electricity demand, resilient onsite generation and alternatives to conventional grid supply.
FuelCell Energy’s public descriptions identify more specific adjacent capabilities:
- Baseload generation for utilities and independent power producers.
- Power systems for data centers, wastewater treatment, commercial and hospitality properties, and microgrids.
- Carbon-capture configurations.
- Hydrogen-related applications, including the company’s advanced solid-oxide electrolysis program.
- Useful thermal energy for chilling, heating or process steam.
Bloom’s cited materials emphasize the Energy Server as a stationary power platform and explain the financing and ownership arrangements used to reach customers. The available information does not establish that every Bloom installation offers the same carbon-capture, hydrogen or combined-heat-and-power configuration described by FuelCell Energy.
Operating scale and evidence of field experience
FuelCell Energy reports utility-scale projects operating at 10 megawatts, 20 megawatts and 58.8 megawatts, each with more than seven years of continuous run time. These are company-reported operating-history figures, not an independently verified head-to-head reliability study.
The figures can help a reader understand the scale of projects FuelCell Energy points to, but they do not prove that every project will operate for the same period or that the systems are more reliable than Bloom’s. A meaningful reliability comparison would need equivalent sites, operating conditions, maintenance records, degradation data and a common measurement method.

| Reporting period | Calendar year ended December 31, 2025. | Fiscal Q3 ended July 31, 2026. |
| Revenue | $2.024 billion in 2025, compared with $1.474 billion in 2024; reported increase of 37.3%. | $33.0 million in fiscal Q3 2026, down 29% year over year. |
| Profitability measure | 29.0% reported GAAP gross margin in 2025; $72.8 million operating income. | $24.5 million gross loss in fiscal Q3 2026. |
| Backlog reported in the same release | Approximately $20 billion total backlog at year-end 2025, including approximately $6 billion of product backlog. | $1.3 billion committed backlog as of July 31, 2026. |
These figures are not a direct scorecard. Bloom’s numbers cover a full calendar year, while FuelCell Energy’s revenue and gross-loss figures cover one fiscal quarter. The companies may also define backlog differently. A full-year revenue figure should not be compared with a single-quarter figure without adjusting the period, and a backlog total should not be treated as recognized revenue.

What the backlog figures do—and do not—tell you
Bloom’s reported backlog
Bloom reported approximately $20 billion of total backlog at the end of 2025, including approximately $6 billion of product backlog. The release presents these as company-reported backlog measures. They indicate contracted or otherwise defined future business under Bloom’s methodology, not cash already collected or revenue already recognized.
The distinction between total backlog and product backlog is important. Total backlog can include longer-term or service-related elements, while product backlog isolates a narrower equipment component. The cited figures do not establish that the entire $20 billion will convert to revenue on a fixed schedule.
FuelCell Energy’s committed and awarded capacity backlog
FuelCell Energy reported $1.3 billion of committed backlog as of July 31, 2026. It also reported $2.4 billion of awarded capacity backlog associated with Fit Energy’s option for up to an additional 350 megawatts. The company’s release should be consulted for its definitions before comparing either figure with Bloom’s backlog.
An option for additional capacity is not the same as a firm order. Likewise, an awarded-capacity figure does not necessarily mean equipment has been delivered, installed or placed into commercial operation. The status of each project and the payment milestones matter more than the headline megawatt figure alone.
FuelCell Energy’s announced 2026 projects and manufacturing plans
Fit Energy agreement
On September 2, 2026, FuelCell Energy reported a capital-equipment purchase agreement with Fit Energy for carbonate systems totaling up to 380 megawatts across four potential phases. The initial 30-megawatt phase was expected to begin delivery in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.
The later phases were options requiring timely elections and milestone-based payments. “Up to 380 megawatts” therefore describes the maximum potential scope under the announced structure, not a completed 380-megawatt installation.
Planned Texas data-center project
FuelCell Energy also reported a capacity-reservation agreement for a planned 75-megawatt project with a major data-center operator in Texas. At the time of the release, definitive project agreements were still being finalized and financial terms had not been disclosed.

Manufacturing expansion targets
The company said it was working toward a 100-megawatt annualized production rate in October 2026 and expanding its Torrington facility toward 500 megawatts of total annualized production capacity, with completion expected by June 2028. Those are targets and plans, not completed production capacity.
Manufacturing capacity can support future growth only if orders, financing, labor, supply chains, quality controls and project execution develop as planned. The announced capacity should therefore be treated as an execution objective rather than current output.
Carbon-capture module delivery
FuelCell Energy reported delivery of its first two carbon-capture modules to ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company in Rotterdam under a collaboration. The announcement demonstrates a collaboration and delivery milestone; it does not by itself establish commercial-scale deployment or the economics of a completed carbon-capture project.

Efficiency, combined heat and power, and recycling claims
FuelCell Energy reported that system efficiency improved from 47% to 50%. It also said total efficiency can exceed 80% when the system is configured for combined heat and power. These are company-reported figures from its 2025 annual and sustainability-report announcement.
The more-than-80% figure includes useful thermal output in a combined-heat-and-power configuration. It should not be compared directly with an electrical-efficiency figure from another product. A fair comparison would use the same fuel, load, operating conditions, definition of efficiency and treatment of recovered heat.
FuelCell Energy also reported approximately 93% recycling or reuse of decommissioned modules through its takeback program. That percentage is a company-reported program result; it does not represent a universal recycling rate for every module or every installation.
Which company is relevant to a data-center or industrial power decision?
Start with the site’s output requirement
A buyer should first define whether the site needs electricity only, electricity plus useful heat, carbon management, hydrogen production or a combination. FuelCell Energy explicitly describes thermal-energy, carbon-capture and hydrogen-related capabilities. Bloom’s cited materials focus on the Energy Server stationary-power platform and the contractual structure used to supply power.

If the site wants to pay for electricity without owning the generation asset, Bloom’s described financier or strategic-partner model may be relevant. If the project requires a provider involved in design, manufacturing, development, installation, operation and maintenance, FuelCell Energy’s stated scope may be more relevant. Actual suitability depends on the bid, site and contract.

Require project-specific evidence
- Guaranteed electrical output and, where relevant, usable thermal output.
- Fuel specification and any limits on renewable natural gas, biofuel or hydrogen blends.
- Availability, maintenance intervals, degradation assumptions and replacement responsibilities.
- Interconnection, permitting, emissions and carbon-capture requirements.
- Ownership, power-purchase, service, warranty and end-of-life obligations.
- Payment milestones and the conditions that turn an announced project or option into a firm order.
Neither company’s cited materials provide an independent, equivalent test that answers all of these questions for both platforms.
How investors should read the numbers
Separate revenue from backlog
Bloom’s $2.024 billion 2025 revenue is recognized business for a completed reporting year. Its approximately $20 billion backlog is a forward-looking contracted or defined pipeline under the company’s methodology. FuelCell Energy’s $33.0 million fiscal Q3 2026 revenue is a single-quarter result, while its $1.3 billion committed backlog and $2.4 billion awarded-capacity figure use separate categories and dates.
Check concentration and counterparties
Bloom’s three reported customer or distributor concentrations—approximately 43%, 13% and 12% of 2025 revenue—show why counterparties matter. The filing’s warning that a customer may be a financing affiliate means an investor should identify the ultimate project, credit exposure and renewal terms rather than relying only on a customer name.

Distinguish announced capacity from delivered capacity
FuelCell Energy’s 380-megawatt Fit Energy framework, optional 350-megawatt capacity and planned 75-megawatt Texas project all require status labels. Initial delivery expectations, options, reservations and projects awaiting definitive agreements carry different execution risks.
Use management statements as guidance, not proof
Bloom Chief Executive KR Sridhar said, Bring-your-own-power has shifted from a slogan to a business necessity for AI hyperscalers and manufacturing facilities. FuelCell Energy Chief Executive Jason Few said the company was accelerating its data-center strategy and expanding manufacturing capacity it believed was required for long-term growth. These statements explain management priorities; they are not independent forecasts or guarantees of orders.
What cannot be concluded from the available evidence
- There is no neutral, independently conducted head-to-head study here comparing equivalent Bloom and FuelCell Energy installations.
- The available information does not establish which company has lower total cost, lower emissions or higher reliability under identical conditions.
- FuelCell Energy’s reported efficiency figures cannot be treated as directly comparable with Bloom’s without matching the measurement basis and system configuration.
- Backlog totals do not prove future revenue timing, cash collection or project completion.
- A planned, reserved or optional project is not the same as an operating plant.
- FuelCell Energy’s advanced solid-oxide electrolysis program should not be confused with its commercial molten-carbonate product line.
Bottom line for readers comparing the companies
Bloom Energy and FuelCell Energy compete in the broad stationary-power market but represent different technology and business choices. Bloom centers on a solid-oxide Energy Server and frequently uses an ownership-and-power model involving financiers or strategic partners. FuelCell Energy centers on molten-carbonate systems and describes a wider project role that includes manufacturing, development, installation, operations, maintenance, carbon capture, hydrogen-related work and useful heat.
For a customer, the deciding issues are site requirements, fuel, heat use, ownership, financing, service obligations and project timing. For an investor, the essential discipline is to keep the reporting periods, backlog definitions, customer concentrations and project-status labels separate. The available company disclosures support a careful comparison of platforms and commercial models, but not a definitive claim that one company is universally more efficient, cheaper or more reliable than the other.
