Oil can jump when an event removes physical supply, yet fall over the following months when uncertainty and weaker economic activity reduce demand. Bitcoin’s relationship with macroeconomic news and other markets has also changed by period and by type of stress: one New York Fed event study found no measurable response in its sample, while IMF studies find stronger cross-market spillovers during turbulent episodes.
The useful comparison is therefore not “which asset always rises?” It is which shock, which market measure, and which time horizon are being examined. Spot oil, oil futures, Bitcoin returns and Bitcoin volatility can tell different stories during the same crisis.

What a “global shock” means in this comparison
A global shock is a sudden event that changes expectations for production, trade, inflation, interest rates, risk appetite or financial-system stability. The label covers events with opposite economic effects, so treating every crisis as the same experiment creates misleading conclusions.

A blocked shipping route, damaged production facility or sanctions regime can reduce the amount of oil available for immediate delivery. If buyers still need roughly the same amount of crude, the prompt market can tighten and spot prices can rise. A physical disruption is the clearest case for an initial oil rally.

Demand or uncertainty shock
A conflict can also make companies and households postpone spending, interrupt trade and reduce expected fuel consumption. That demand channel can outweigh a temporary supply concern. The International Monetary Fund’s April 2025 analysis of geopolitical-risk shocks found oil prices fluctuated during the first month but declined on average in subsequent months; the cumulative average decline reached about 1 percent several months after the shock. That estimate is an average across the episodes studied, not a forecast for every conflict.
Financial and macroeconomic shock
Changes in interest-rate expectations, equity prices, credit conditions or liquidity can move Bitcoin even when the event does not directly affect cryptocurrency networks. They can also alter oil prices through expectations for global growth and through investor positioning. These channels explain why two assets can diverge at first and become more connected later.
How oil reacts: start with the physical market
Spot prices respond to barrels available now
Oil spot prices represent transactions for prompt delivery. When a major supply route closes, refiners and other buyers compete for a smaller pool of immediately deliverable crude. The resulting scarcity can push spot prices sharply higher before producers, inventories, shipping routes or demand have time to adjust.
A Federal Reserve Board FEDS Note published October 9, 2026, examined an abrupt supply reduction after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the Middle East conflict discussed in that note. In the episode described by the authors, spot oil had risen from around $60 per barrel at the start of 2026 and fluctuated between $80 and $100 since early March. Those figures are observations from that source period, not current quotations or a standing range for oil.
Backwardation shows a prompt-market squeeze
In the same episode, spot prices moved substantially above futures prices, creating severe backwardation. Backwardation means the price for immediate delivery exceeds the quoted price for delivery later. It can indicate that obtaining a barrel today is unusually valuable relative to securing one for a future date.
Backwardation is not simply a bullish forecast. It can reflect the convenience yield of holding physical oil when inventories are scarce, while futures may include negative or positive risk premiums and may trade with less liquidity. A buyer that urgently needs crude can pay a high prompt price even if traders expect the physical shortage to ease.

Futures are informed expectations, not guaranteed forecasts
The Federal Reserve authors Erik Heitfield, Yang-Ho Park and Erfan Danesh write: “Oil futures prices should provide an indication of market participants’ expectations about future oil prices, but neither economic theory nor a large body of empirical work suggests that this relationship is likely to be one-to-one in all circumstances.”

They also warned that estimates made during unusually severe backwardation extend beyond much of the historical data and that reduced market depth makes price signals harder to interpret. A futures quote can therefore combine expectations about later supply with compensation for risk, financing, inventory and liquidity rather than giving a precise prediction of the later spot price.
Why an oil price can fall after a geopolitical shock
The IMF’s April 2025 Global Financial Stability Report online annex provides the counterweight to a supply-only narrative. Its average geopolitical-risk response shows an initial period of fluctuation followed by lower oil prices over subsequent months, with the largest average cumulative decline—about 1 percent—several months after the shock. The authors explain that supply disruption creates a cost-push force, while uncertainty can weaken global demand; in the episodes covered by the annex, the demand and uncertainty effects dominated on average.
An individual event can still produce the opposite result. The average estimate does not override the physical facts of a particular outage, the amount of spare capacity, inventory levels, shipping alternatives or the duration of the disruption.
How Bitcoin reacts: the evidence changes by sample and stress level
An event study found no measurable macro-news response in its sample
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report The Bitcoin–Macro Disconnect uses an intraday event-study design. Its key result is that, unlike other U.S. asset classes, Bitcoin was orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in the study’s sample. In practical terms, the measured Bitcoin move around the selected announcements was not systematically explained by those macro surprises.
That is a result for the report’s dates, announcement set and statistical method. It does not establish that Bitcoin will remain disconnected from every future rate decision, inflation release or geopolitical event. Intraday independence can coexist with larger relationships that emerge over days, months or a different market regime.

Spillovers grew during turbulent periods
An IMF Working Paper by Roshan Iyer and Adina Popescu, covering returns and volatility spillovers from 2014 through the end of 2022, reaches a different but complementary conclusion. Spillovers among crypto assets and financial markets intensified during turbulence caused by adverse economic or financial news, crypto-specific events and other exogenous shocks. Measured interdependence peaked during the COVID-19 pandemic in their sample.
The authors found that crypto assets often transmitted spillovers to financial markets, but the direction could reverse during financial stress. A market that appears relatively self-contained in calm conditions can therefore become more connected when investors are forced to rebalance, liquidity thins or losses trigger broad risk reduction.
Recent evidence points to stock-market transmission into Bitcoin
The IMF’s April 2025 Global Financial Stability Report described Bitcoin as more exposed to pressure in other asset prices during the period it reviewed. Bitcoin had fallen more than 25 percent from its early-2025 peak, and the report said stock-market shocks appeared to spill over to Bitcoin more than the reverse in its analysis. Both observations are snapshots from the report’s publication period; they are not statements about Bitcoin’s current drawdown or a permanent direction of causality.
Bitcoin and oil side by side
| Comparison axis | Oil | Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Primary shock channel | Physical supply, inventories, transport and expected fuel demand; financial positioning also matters. | Macro news, risk appetite, crypto-specific events, liquidity and spillovers from other financial assets. |
| Fastest observable measure | Prompt or spot price, especially when immediate barrels become scarce. | Intraday return and volatility around announcements or market-wide stress. |
| Typical longer-horizon question | Does weaker activity reduce consumption enough to outweigh supply disruption? | Does stress create stronger connections with equities, rates and other risky assets? |
| Evidence of changing behavior | Average geopolitical-risk episodes in the IMF’s April 2025 annex produced a later decline, while the Federal Reserve’s 2026 supply-disruption case produced severe spot backwardation. | The New York Fed found a macro-news disconnect in its sample; IMF work found larger spillovers during turbulence and stock-market shocks spilling into Bitcoin in the April 2025 report. |
| What the cited evidence does not establish | A universal rule that every geopolitical event raises or lowers oil. | A permanent safe-haven status or a stable, one-for-one relationship with oil. |
Does Bitcoin go up when oil prices rise?
There is no dependable rule in the cited evidence. Oil can rise because a physical shortage raises the value of immediate delivery. Bitcoin may move for entirely different reasons—changes in liquidity, equity prices, interest-rate expectations, crypto-specific news or investor positioning. The two prices could rise together, move in opposite directions or show little connection.
The available studies do not estimate a single matched Bitcoin-versus-oil model in which both assets are exposed to the same set of shocks. The oil studies focus on spot and futures responses to supply, geopolitical-risk and demand channels. The Bitcoin studies examine macro-news events, crypto and financial-market spillovers, and stock-market transmission. Comparing the findings is useful for understanding mechanisms, but it cannot produce a precise correlation coefficient between Bitcoin and oil during every crisis.
Is Bitcoin a safe haven during geopolitical crises?
The evidence does not support calling Bitcoin a universal safe haven. A safe haven would generally be expected to preserve value or move independently when conventional risky assets fall. The New York Fed’s event-study result is consistent with short-window independence from the macro announcements it tested, but the IMF’s spillover research shows that interdependence can increase during turbulence. The IMF’s April 2025 report also documented stock-market shocks spilling over to Bitcoin more than the reverse during its observation period.

“Safe haven” is therefore a testable, time-limited description, not a permanent asset label. An analyst would need to specify the crisis, comparison asset, return window, currency, volatility measure and whether protection means a positive return, a smaller loss or merely low correlation.

A practical framework for analyzing the next shock
Investors and readers can avoid headline-driven conclusions by working through the same sequence for both markets.
- Define the event precisely. Record what happened, when it became public and whether it affects physical production, transport, demand, monetary policy, financial institutions or crypto infrastructure.
- Classify the dominant channel. For oil, separate an immediate supply interruption from a demand or uncertainty shock. For Bitcoin, identify macro news, a crypto-specific event, a liquidity event or a spillover from stocks and credit.
- Choose the horizon before looking at the chart. Use minutes or hours for an announcement reaction, days for repricing and positioning, and months for demand, production and policy adjustments. Mixing a first-day move with a six-month response can reverse the apparent conclusion.
- Use the correct oil measure. Compare prompt spot prices with futures at several maturities. Check whether the curve is in backwardation or contango, and note inventory, shipping and market-depth conditions.
- Use more than Bitcoin’s headline price. Examine returns, realized or implied volatility when available, trading volume and the timing of moves in equities, rates and the dollar. A price change that occurs after a broad risk-off move may indicate spillover rather than a direct response to the original event.
- Establish a pre-shock baseline. Measure the move against a recent average or a comparable non-event period. Otherwise, ordinary volatility can be mistaken for a crisis effect.
- Check for changing direction. Ask whether the first reaction and the later response differ. Oil can rally on immediate scarcity and decline once demand damage becomes clearer. Bitcoin can look independent around a single announcement and more correlated during a prolonged liquidation.
- State what the data cannot show. Separate an association from causation, identify the sample and method, and avoid translating an average response into a rule for every future event.
Two contrasting shock patterns
Pattern 1: a sudden shipping-route closure
Suppose a closure immediately limits deliveries. The first place to look is the prompt oil market: spot prices may rise above futures as refiners compete for available barrels. The Federal Reserve’s October 2026 note illustrates why the futures curve must be read alongside physical conditions. A lower six-month quote than the spot price can reflect expectations that the disruption will ease, but it can also be influenced by risk premiums, inventory economics and impaired liquidity.
Bitcoin has no physical barrel shortage to price. Its first move would instead depend on whether traders interpret the conflict as a threat to global growth, a source of inflation, a reason to reduce leverage or a catalyst for demand for alternative assets. The cited studies do not justify predicting the direction in advance.
Pattern 2: a broad uncertainty shock that weakens activity
If businesses delay investment and consumers reduce travel, expected fuel demand can fall. The IMF’s April 2025 average response captures this possibility: after early fluctuations, oil prices were lower several months later across the geopolitical-risk episodes studied. The same deterioration in risk appetite could increase Bitcoin’s connection to stocks and other risky assets, consistent with the IMF’s finding that spillovers intensify in turbulent periods.
This pattern shows why an oil decline does not prove that a crisis was economically benign. Prices can fall because the expected loss of demand is larger than the supply risk.

What to monitor in oil markets
- Spot-versus-futures spread: A widening premium for prompt delivery can signal immediate scarcity, but it should be interpreted with inventories and liquidity.
- Curve shape across maturities: Severe backwardation can mean the present barrel is unusually valuable; it does not guarantee that later spot prices will match the futures curve.
- Inventory and spare-capacity information: These determine how long a supply gap might persist and whether additional production or stock releases can cushion it.
- Demand indicators: Shipping activity, industrial output and mobility help distinguish a supply-led rally from a shock that is beginning to damage consumption.
- Market depth and risk premiums: Thin trading can exaggerate moves and make futures-based forecasts less reliable.
What to monitor in Bitcoin markets
- Timing around scheduled macro releases: The New York Fed result shows why an apparent lack of intraday response should be reported as a sample-specific finding, not a universal property.
- Cross-asset co-movement: Compare Bitcoin with equities, credit and rates during the same window to identify possible spillovers.
- Volatility and volume: A stable price with sharply higher volatility or trading activity may indicate hidden repricing pressure.
- Crypto-specific catalysts: Network incidents, exchange problems, regulatory announcements and forced liquidations can dominate a macro headline.
- Stress-regime changes: IMF evidence from 2014–2022 indicates that relationships strengthen during turbulence, so calm-period correlations should not be used as crisis assumptions.
Common mistakes when comparing Bitcoin and oil
Assuming every geopolitical event is bullish for oil
Only a subset of events directly removes supply. The IMF’s average result shows why uncertainty and weaker demand can push prices down after the initial reaction.
Treating the futures curve as a precise forecast
Risk premiums, convenience yields, financing and liquidity can separate futures from later spot prices, especially during severe backwardation.
Calling Bitcoin disconnected or correlated without a time window
An intraday event study, a multi-year spillover model and a drawdown observed in a monthly report answer different questions. A valid statement names the period, asset measure and method.

Bottom line for investors
Oil’s response is primarily a contest between immediate physical scarcity and the later effect of weaker demand. Bitcoin’s response is primarily a question of how its market connects to macro news, liquidity and other financial assets in the particular stress regime. A supply disruption can lift oil spot prices while Bitcoin reacts independently; a broad risk-off episode can later pull oil lower and increase Bitcoin’s spillover from stocks.
The disciplined conclusion is conditional: identify the shock, separate spot from futures, specify the time horizon and report the evidence’s sample and method. Neither Bitcoin nor oil is established by these studies as a universal hedge against global crises.
