It is reached when the collateral supporting the position no longer satisfies the venue’s maintenance-margin requirement. There is no universal BTC liquidation percentage or formula: the result depends on the contract, direction, entry price, size, leverage, margin mode, maintenance tier, fees, deductions, other positions and available balance.
Use the exchange’s current calculator and contract rules as the controlling answer. Manual calculations are useful for understanding risk and checking whether an estimate looks plausible, but a third-party number can be wrong when the venue’s tier schedule, mark-price method or fee treatment differs.

What a Bitcoin liquidation price means
A leveraged position is funded by your margin plus borrowed or embedded leverage. The exchange requires a minimum amount of equity to keep that position open, called maintenance margin. As an adverse price move creates unrealized losses, your remaining equity falls. Liquidation occurs when the account or position no longer meets the maintenance requirement.

The trigger is normally the mark price, not necessarily the last traded price shown on a chart. Binance describes liquidation as occurring when collateral is less than maintenance margin and the mark price reaches the liquidation price. Bybit similarly states that liquidation is triggered when the mark price reaches the liquidation price while position margin falls below required maintenance margin. A brief last-price spike may therefore fail to liquidate you if the mark price does not reach the trigger, while a mark-price move can liquidate a position even when the most recent trade looks different.

Liquidation is an exchange risk-control process, not a fixed “percentage away from entry.” Two traders entering BTC at the same price can have different liquidation prices because they use different contract types, leverage, margin modes, risk tiers, fees or account balances.
Why there is no single BTC liquidation formula
Every venue defines its own maintenance-margin schedule, deductions, mark-price index, fee assumptions and treatment of other positions. Even on one platform, an isolated USDT perpetual and a cross-margined inverse contract use different inputs.
| Position or contract detail | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| Long or short direction | A long loses value when BTC falls; a short loses value when BTC rises, so the adverse price direction is opposite. |
| Entry price and quantity | These determine the position’s notional exposure and the size of unrealized profit or loss for a given move. |
| Leverage and initial margin | Higher leverage generally leaves less loss-absorbing collateral per dollar of exposure. |
| Maintenance-margin rate and tier | Rates can rise as position size or risk-limit tier increases, moving liquidation closer. |
| Margin mode | Isolated margin limits the collateral assigned to the position; cross margin can draw on broader account resources. |
| Added margin | Extra collateral can move the liquidation estimate farther from the current mark price, subject to venue rules. |
| Fees and deductions | Opening, closing or estimated liquidation fees can be included in the equity calculation and alter the trigger. |
| Other positions and balances | Cross-margin calculations can change with available balance, unrealized PnL and positions in other contracts. |
Because these variables differ, a statement such as “10x leverage liquidates after a 10% move” is only a rough intuition, not a dependable calculation.

- Venue and contract: identify spot margin, an inverse perpetual, a USDT-margined perpetual or a dated futures contract.
- Direction: long or short.
- Entry price: use the position’s actual average entry, not a chart value rounded to a convenient number.
- Quantity or notional: record the contract size and settlement currency.
- Leverage and initial margin: note whether leverage was changed after opening.
- Margin mode: isolated or cross.
- Added or removed margin: include transfers into or out of an isolated position and any venue-specific adjustments.

- Mark-price method: confirm which index and premium rules determine the liquidation trigger.
How major calculation methods differ
Binance USDⓈ-M contracts
The USDⓈ-M approach uses more than entry price and leverage. Its documented calculation incorporates wallet balance, maintenance margin, unrealized PnL from other contracts, position size, entry price, the maintenance-margin rate and tier-specific maintenance amounts. A cross-margined result can therefore move when another position gains or loses money or when available wallet equity changes. An isolated result is tied more closely to the margin assigned to that position, but the applicable tier and fee treatment still matter.
Bybit inverse contracts
For an inverse contract, the documented variables include position value, initial margin, maintenance margin and the risk-limit maintenance-margin rate. Inverse contracts settle in the underlying coin, so the relationship between price, contract value and margin is different from a USDT-settled contract. Do not paste an inverse position into a USDT formula.
Bybit USDT contracts
The USDT formula uses entry price, position size, leverage, extra margin, the maintenance-margin rate and a deduction. Fee assumptions can also differ. The same BTC entry and leverage can therefore produce a different estimate after a size change moves the position into another risk tier or after extra margin is added.
These are descriptions of the documented input sets, not a universal equation. The venue’s current contract page and calculator determine the exact arithmetic, rounding and liquidation process.

Step-by-step: calculate and verify your liquidation price
- Open the contract specification. Select the exact BTC instrument and settlement currency. Confirm whether it is inverse, USDT-margined or dated futures, and record the mark-price and maintenance-margin rules.
- Capture the live position state. Write down direction, average entry price, quantity or notional, leverage, margin mode and assigned or extra margin.
- Find the current risk tier. Match your position notional to the venue’s maintenance-margin rate, deduction and risk-limit band. Recheck this after increasing size.
- Include account-level values where required. For cross margin, include available balance, unrealized PnL and the effect of other open contracts. Do not substitute your total account balance if the venue defines “available balance” differently.
- Apply the venue’s fee treatment. Determine whether an estimated closing fee, liquidation fee or other deduction is reserved. Funding payments may change equity even when the BTC mark price is unchanged.
- Run the exchange calculator. Enter the values exactly as displayed in the position panel. Save the resulting liquidation estimate and the time it was calculated.
- Compare with the mark price. Measure the current gap in dollars and percentage, but remember that the mark price—not a generic spot or last-trade chart—controls the trigger.
- Recalculate after every material change. Update the estimate when you add or remove margin, change leverage, resize, cross a risk tier, close another position, or see a meaningful balance, fee or funding change.
Understanding how far BTC can move before liquidation
For a long position, the relevant question is how far the mark price can fall before the maintenance condition fails. For a short, it is how far the mark price can rise. The distance is not determined by leverage alone. A larger maintenance requirement, a higher-risk tier, a closing-fee reserve or a smaller margin balance reduces the available buffer. Added margin or favorable unrealized PnL can increase it, subject to the platform’s rules.
Use two separate measurements:
- Price buffer: current mark price minus liquidation price for a long, or liquidation price minus current mark price for a short.
- Percentage buffer: the price buffer divided by the current mark price.
These are monitoring aids, not guarantees. Mark-price construction, funding, fees, tier changes and account-level PnL can alter the estimate before BTC reaches the level shown on your screen.
Isolated margin versus cross margin
| Feature | Isolated margin | Cross margin |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral exposed | Normally limited to the margin allocated to that position under the venue’s documented rules. | Can use available account balance and equity shared across eligible positions. |
| Liquidation estimate stability | Usually easier to bound because unrelated account activity is less influential. | Can move as other positions’ unrealized PnL, available balance or funding changes. |
| Potential room before liquidation | Less collateral is available to absorb an adverse move unless you add margin. | More account equity may provide additional room. |
| Worst-case account exposure | Generally concentrated in the assigned position margin. | Broader account funds can be exposed when the shared margin pool is used. |
| Best use case | A defined maximum loss for a single speculative position. | Portfolio-style margining when you understand correlations and can monitor the whole account. |
Neither mode is automatically safer. Isolated margin makes the amount at risk easier to cap. Cross margin can delay liquidation by supplying more collateral, but a losing position can consume funds intended for other trades or withdrawals. Read the venue’s rules for what happens to unrealized PnL and available balance before choosing.

Applying a generic leverage formula
Symptom: a spreadsheet gives a neat percentage that disagrees with the exchange. Correction: include maintenance tier, deduction, fee treatment, contract type and settlement currency; then verify with the venue calculator.
Ignoring a risk-limit change
Symptom: increasing position size unexpectedly moves liquidation closer. Correction: check the maintenance schedule whenever notional crosses a tier and recalculate.
Treating cross margin as free insurance
Symptom: liquidation is farther away, but account equity falls rapidly. Correction: track available balance and every correlated position, and set an account-level loss limit independent of the displayed liquidation price.
Forgetting fees, funding or added margin
Symptom: your manual estimate was initially close but drifts over time. Correction: update for funding, reserved closing fees, realized PnL and every margin transfer.

Relying on a stale screenshot
Symptom: a saved liquidation level no longer matches the position panel. Correction: treat the estimate as a live account-state value and recalculate after each material change.
A practical risk-control routine
- Use modest leverage. Lower leverage generally leaves more collateral per unit of exposure, although the exact buffer still depends on the maintenance schedule.
- Set a liquidation buffer. Decide how much distance from the mark price you require before entering, and reject trades that do not meet it.
- Define an exit before liquidation. A stop-loss or discretionary exit can reduce losses before the exchange’s forced-close process begins; it is not guaranteed during fast markets or gaps.
- Limit account contagion. Isolated margin can bound one position’s collateral, while cross margin requires an explicit account-wide exposure limit.
- Watch maintenance tiers. Position growth can raise the rate or deduction and shrink the buffer.
- Keep records. Save entry, size, margin mode, calculator output and mark price so you can identify what changed.
- Do not confuse liquidation with a trading plan. Liquidation is the failure boundary, not an intended stop or a measure of acceptable risk.
How to compare venues or contracts
If you are deciding between instruments, compare the rules rather than headline leverage:
- How the mark price is indexed and updated.
- Maintenance-margin tiers, risk-limit schedule and deductions.
- Whether isolated and cross margin are available and how each uses balance.
- Opening, closing, liquidation and funding-fee treatment.
- Contract type and settlement currency.
- Whether liquidation is partial, full or otherwise staged under the venue’s process.
- How unrealized PnL from other positions affects cross-margin equity.
A contract offering more leverage can still provide a smaller practical buffer if its maintenance requirements and fee reserves are higher.
When the displayed estimate changes
Expect the liquidation price to change after a position-size adjustment, leverage change, added or removed margin, fee or funding payment, realized PnL, movement into another maintenance tier, or a change in cross-account equity. The estimate can also differ when the exchange updates risk parameters or mark-price methodology. Reopen the current contract documentation rather than relying on an old formula copied into a spreadsheet.
The reliable operating rule is simple: identify the exact contract, reproduce the current account state, run the exchange’s calculator, and maintain a buffer large enough that ordinary volatility does not take you directly to the forced-close boundary.
