Short answer: Isolated margin assigns collateral to one futures position, while cross margin lets eligible positions draw from a shared wallet balance. Isolated makes a position’s maximum planned loss easier to ring-fence; cross can use collateral more efficiently but allows losses in one position to reduce the buffer protecting others. In both modes, liquidation is driven by the contract’s mark price, your collateral and unrealized profit or loss, and the position’s maintenance-margin requirement—not simply by the leverage number shown in the order panel.

Binance’s maintenance margin is calculated in position-value brackets. Larger notionals generally move into higher maintenance-margin rates, and the bracket calculation is independent of the leverage setting. The practical decision is therefore how you want collateral and liquidation risk allocated, not which mode promises a universally safer return.

What isolated and cross margin mean

Isolated margin: one position, one collateral allocation

In isolated mode, each position receives its own dedicated margin balance. If that position’s equity falls below its maintenance requirement, Binance can liquidate that position without automatically using the margin assigned to unrelated isolated positions. This separation reduces the chance that one liquidation directly consumes collateral earmarked for another trade.

Isolated margin also lets you adjust margin at the individual-position level. Adding margin can increase the distance to liquidation; removing margin does the opposite, subject to Binance’s current rules and available balance. Because the calculation is position-specific, it is easier to define a maximum amount you are willing to place at risk on a single trade.

Cross margin: a shared collateral pool

In cross mode, positions draw from a shared cross-wallet balance. Account equity, realized profit or loss and unrealized profit or loss across other cross positions can affect the collateral available to keep a particular position open. A profitable position may increase the account-level buffer, while a losing position can reduce the buffer supporting several positions at once.

This sharing can make capital use more efficient for a portfolio whose positions are deliberately managed together. It also creates joint exposure: a loss elsewhere can push a cross position closer to liquidation even when that position’s own entry price has not moved much.

What maintenance margin is

Maintenance margin is the minimum collateral required to keep a leveraged position open. Binance describes the trigger this way: “A liquidation is triggered when: Collateral = Initial Collateral + Realized PnL + Unrealized PnL < Maintenance Margin.” In plain language, liquidation becomes possible when the collateral supporting the position falls below the maintenance amount required for its current risk bracket.

Maintenance margin is not the same as the initial margin you posted to open the trade. Initial margin is the opening collateral requirement; maintenance margin is the lower threshold that must be maintained afterward. Fees, realized profit or loss, funding and unrealized profit or loss can all change the equity used in the calculation.

Bracketed rates and position size

Binance calculates maintenance-margin rates through a bracket system. The bracket is based primarily on position value and contract-specific risk parameters. Binance states that maintenance-margin calculations are performed through a bracket setup and are calculated the same way regardless of the leverage selected. Moving to another bracket does not retroactively change the leverage of the earlier bracket, but the larger position may carry a higher maintenance-margin rate.

A concrete example on Binance’s USDⓈ-M liquidation documentation assigns a 264,000 USDT BTCUSDT position a 1% maintenance-margin rate under the referenced risk table. That figure is tied to that table, symbol and contract parameters; it is not a universal rate for every BTCUSDT position, every symbol or every date. Binance updated that example page on 2025-12-31, so check the current bracket table for the contract you are trading.

Why changing leverage alone does not solve a margin problem

Changing the leverage selector changes the initial-margin amount Binance requires for a given notional. It does not rewrite the maintenance-margin bracket. Position notional, bracket tier, mark price, margin balance, unrealized profit or loss and contract-specific parameters still determine liquidation risk. A lower displayed leverage can therefore leave a large position in the same maintenance bracket, while increasing the notional can move the position into a higher-rate tier.

How Binance determines liquidation

Mark price, not the last traded price

Binance says liquidation occurs when the mark price reaches a position’s liquidation price. Mark price is the reference used to reduce the effect of a brief, abnormal last-trade-price move. Watching only the latest trade price can therefore give a misleading impression of how close a futures position is to liquidation.

The liquidation price shown in the interface is an estimate based on the current position, margin, fees, maintenance requirements and other contract parameters. It can move as mark price changes, as funding or fees are charged, as you add or remove margin, or as other positions change your account equity in cross mode.

Collateral and maintenance margin

The core relationship is:

Collateral = initial collateral + realized PnL + unrealized PnL.

When that collateral falls below the applicable maintenance margin, the position is in the liquidation zone. Binance recommends keeping the margin ratio below 80%. Binance defines the ratio as maintenance margin divided by margin balance; a rising ratio means less room remains before the required maintenance level consumes the available balance.

Cross-mode terms versus isolated-mode terms

Binance’s published USDⓈ-M formula shows why the two modes behave differently. In cross mode, the calculation includes the cross-wallet balance, maintenance margin from other cross positions and unrealized profit or loss from those other positions. In isolated mode, those other-position terms are zeroed for the isolated calculation.

Calculation factor Cross margin Isolated margin
Wallet collateral Shared cross-wallet balance can support multiple cross positions. Only the margin allocated to the individual position is used for that position’s isolated calculation.
Other positions’ unrealized PnL Can increase or decrease account-level collateral. Not included in the position’s isolated calculation.
Other positions’ maintenance margin Included in account-level risk calculations. Excluded from the position’s isolated requirement.
Margin adjustment Managed through the shared account balance rather than a completely separate pool per position. Margin can be adjusted for the individual position.

Cross versus isolated: the practical trade-offs

Decision factor Isolated margin Cross margin
Loss containment Collateral assigned to the position is the primary amount exposed to that position’s liquidation. The shared pool can expose collateral supporting several cross positions.
Capital efficiency Unused collateral in another position does not automatically protect this one. Available cross-wallet collateral can support positions across the account.
Liquidation independence Each isolated position has its own liquidation calculation and margin allocation. Positions can affect one another through shared balance and unrealized PnL.
Position-level control You can add or remove margin for the individual position. Risk is managed mainly at the account and portfolio level.
Monitoring burden Focus on each position’s margin, mark price and maintenance requirement. Monitor total equity, every cross position’s unrealized PnL and aggregate maintenance margin.
Failure pattern An underfunded position may liquidate sooner because outside collateral is not automatically available. A loss in one position can reduce the buffer for positions that are otherwise profitable.

These are risk-allocation differences inferred from Binance’s documented mechanics, not a promise that either mode will produce a better trading result.

When isolated margin is usually the clearer choice

  • You want a predefined maximum allocation per trade. Assigning a known amount to each position makes it easier to cap the collateral exposed to one idea.
  • Your positions are unrelated. If one trade should not subsidize another, separate isolated allocations prevent automatic sharing.
  • You are learning leveraged products. Position-level accounting is generally easier to reason about than an account-wide equation involving several unrealized PnLs.
  • You are running asymmetric risk. A high-volatility position can be isolated so a sudden mark-price move does not automatically draw on collateral reserved for lower-risk positions.

Isolation does not eliminate liquidation. If the allocated margin falls below maintenance requirements, that position can still be liquidated, and it may do so while other positions remain open.

When cross margin can fit a coordinated portfolio

  • You intentionally manage positions as one portfolio. Shared collateral can avoid leaving large amounts of idle balance beside one position while another needs support.
  • Positions hedge or offset one another. A profitable cross position may contribute unrealized PnL to account equity, although that contribution can disappear as market prices move.
  • You monitor aggregate risk continuously. Cross requires attention to the entire account, not only the trade currently on screen.

Cross is not a free safety buffer. An adverse move in one position can consume the same collateral that another position needs. A portfolio that looks diversified by symbol can still have a single liquidation outcome if all positions share one cross wallet and the account equity falls below aggregate maintenance requirements.

How to select and manage the mode in Binance Futures

Binance’s labels and controls can vary between web and mobile interfaces, so confirm the current symbol’s contract settings before submitting an order. The following workflow uses the standard Futures trading-panel concepts.

  1. Open the Futures trading interface and select the contract. Confirm whether you are trading a USDⓈ-M or another futures product, because risk brackets and contract parameters are product-specific.
  2. Open the margin-mode control. The trading panel normally shows the current mode beside the leverage control. Choose Isolated or Cross and read the confirmation dialog before accepting the change.
  3. Check whether existing positions or orders restrict the change. Binance may require you to close positions or cancel orders before changing a symbol’s mode. Do not assume a mode change has applied until the interface displays the new setting.
  4. Review the leverage and risk-limit information. Leverage affects initial margin, while maintenance margin remains bracket-based. Check the current position-value tier and any symbol-specific risk limits rather than relying on the leverage number alone.
  5. For isolated mode, set the position allocation deliberately. Use the position-level margin control to add or remove collateral only after checking the resulting liquidation estimate and available balance.
  6. For cross mode, inspect the whole account. Review every cross position, total unrealized PnL, wallet balance, maintenance margin and margin ratio before adding another trade.
  7. Place protective orders, but understand their limits. A stop order can help manage an exit, yet a fast market, mark-price movement, insufficient liquidity or an order that does not trigger as expected can still leave liquidation risk.

Understanding liquidation’s sequence

Binance describes its process as Smart Liquidation. When liquidation begins, applicable open orders are canceled. The system first attempts an Immediate-or-Cancel order to reduce the deficit without fully liquidating the position. If a bankrupt position remains, the Futures Insurance Fund can take it over to the extent possible.

This sequence explains why an account may not appear to jump directly from a warning to a single all-at-once fill. Order cancellation and attempted position reduction are part of the process. The exact outcome depends on the contract, market conditions, available liquidity and the account’s deficit.

Hedge mode and shared liquidation prices

In hedge mode, Binance states that long and short positions share one liquidation price in cross mode. When both sides are isolated, each side has its own liquidation price based on its allocated margin. A hedge therefore does not automatically create two independent liquidation thresholds if the positions use cross margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the margin mode of each side and the displayed liquidation information rather than assuming that holding both a long and a short makes the account immune to liquidation. Funding, fees, differing quantities and mark-price changes can still alter equity and maintenance requirements.

Why a position can be liquidated while another shows unrealized profit

This is most often a cross-margin accounting issue. The profitable position’s unrealized PnL is not a guaranteed cash balance; it changes with the mark price and may be offset by losses, maintenance requirements and fees elsewhere. Binance’s cross calculation considers the shared wallet and other cross positions together. If aggregate collateral falls below aggregate maintenance requirements, the account can enter liquidation even though one position is displaying a gain.

In isolated mode, the profit on a separate isolated position does not automatically fund the losing position’s isolated margin. That separation can allow the losing position to liquidate while the profitable position remains open, because each position is evaluated using its own allocation.

Checks to perform before increasing position size

  • Notional and bracket: Determine whether the larger position crosses into a higher maintenance-margin tier.
  • Mark-price distance: Use the mark price and displayed liquidation price, not only the last traded price.
  • Account equity: In cross mode, include all cross positions’ unrealized PnL and maintenance requirements.
  • Margin ratio: Treat a rising ratio as shrinking headroom; Binance recommends keeping it below 80%.
  • Fees and funding: Allow for deductions that reduce available collateral over time.
  • Contract parameters: Verify the current symbol’s leverage limits, risk brackets and maintenance table because Binance can change specifications and risk parameters.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming maximum leverage determines liquidation by itself

Leverage is only one input. Recalculate the effect of notional size, bracket tier, margin balance and mark-price movement. A lower leverage setting does not guarantee a lower maintenance rate.

Treating unrealized profit as spendable collateral

In cross mode, unrealized profit can support the account, but it can also reverse. Stress-test the account without relying on a temporary gain and include the maintenance requirements of all open cross positions.

Adding margin without checking the new risk concentration

Adding isolated margin moves more collateral into that one position. It may increase liquidation distance, but it also increases the amount of capital exposed if the trade ultimately fails. Decide whether the added margin fits your loss limit before applying it.

Assuming a hedge creates independent liquidation thresholds

In cross hedge mode, the long and short share one liquidation price. Verify whether each side is isolated if separate liquidation calculations are essential to your plan.

A decision framework

  1. Define the loss boundary. If the key requirement is a position-level maximum allocation, start with isolated margin.
  2. Identify genuine collateral sharing. Choose cross only when you intentionally want positions to draw from the same pool and can monitor the resulting account exposure.
  3. Check the bracket before the leverage. Estimate the position value and maintenance tier first; then choose leverage that fits the initial-margin budget.
  4. Model the adverse case. For cross, include losses in every cross position and the maintenance margin each one requires. For isolated, assume outside positions provide no rescue capital.
  5. Recheck after every material change. New positions, partial closes, margin transfers, funding, fees and mark-price moves can change liquidation estimates.

For someone seeking a predefined maximum loss per trade, isolated margin is usually easier to control. Someone intentionally running a portfolio with shared collateral may prefer cross margin, accepting that losses in one position can reduce the buffer for others. This is a risk-management interpretation of Binance’s mechanics, not individualized financial advice.

What to verify in Binance’s current documentation

Risk parameters are contract-specific and can change. Before trading, verify the current symbol’s maintenance-margin brackets, leverage limits, liquidation rules and mark-price methodology in Binance’s Futures documentation and the risk information displayed in the trading interface. The 1% rate for the 264,000 USDT BTCUSDT example and the 80% margin-ratio recommendation are dated figures from Binance pages updated 2025-12-31 and 2026-01-04 respectively; they should not be generalized to another contract or treated as permanent settings.
