An immediate buyer normally pays the ask; an immediate seller normally receives the bid. That gap is an implicit trading cost, even when your broker charges no commission. Liquidity—how much interest and available volume exists at nearby prices—determines whether the spread stays narrow, widens suddenly, or causes a large order to fill at several prices.
What the bid and ask mean
For a quoted stock, exchange-traded fund, bond, currency or other security, the bid is the highest price a market participant is willing to pay for a specified quantity at that moment. The ask (also called the offer) is the lowest price at which a participant is willing to sell a specified quantity. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes the bid as the highest price a market maker will pay to purchase a specified number of shares. Investor.gov defines the spread as the difference between bid and ask.

Suppose a quote shows a $99 bid for 500 shares and a $100 ask for 700 shares:
- A seller who wants an immediate execution generally sells into the $99 bid.
- A buyer who wants an immediate execution generally buys from the $100 ask.
- The full spread is $1 per share.
- The midpoint, halfway between the two quotes, is $99.50.
The midpoint is a reference, not a price you are guaranteed to receive. Crossing from one side of the market to the other means accepting the other side’s available quote, and the quote can change before your order reaches the venue.

How much the spread costs
The spread is an immediate cost of trading, separate from commissions, exchange fees, taxes and any market impact. Buying at the ask and selling at the bid at unchanged quotes would lose the spread. For a one-share round trip in the example above, that difference is $1. For 100 shares, it is $100 before other costs.
It is useful to express the spread in several ways:
- Absolute spread: ask minus bid. Here, $100 − $99 = $1.
- One-sided distance from midpoint: half the spread. Here, $0.50.
- Relative spread: the spread divided by a chosen reference, often the midpoint, then multiplied by 100. In the example, $1 ÷ $99.50 is about 1.01%.
The relative measure makes quotes comparable across prices. A five-cent gap is significant for a $1 security but minor for a $500 security.

Liquidity is the ability to buy or sell in a secondary market quickly, in the desired amount, without causing a substantial price change. It is broader than the displayed spread. A liquid market typically has many willing participants, substantial size near the current price and quotes that remain available as orders arrive. A thin market may have few participants, small displayed quantities and large gaps between price levels.

What usually narrows a spread
- Many competing buyers and sellers.
- Large quantities posted at prices close to the midpoint.
- Stable information and relatively low short-term uncertainty.
- High trading activity that lets market makers recycle inventory quickly.
Competition gives liquidity providers less room to quote far apart. It also makes it easier for a new order to find a matching order without moving through multiple price levels.
What usually widens a spread
- Few participants or little available size.
- Uncertain news, trading halts, market openings or closings.
- Rapid price movement and heightened volatility.
- Assets that are difficult or expensive for liquidity providers to hedge.
When risk rises, a market maker may quote a smaller amount, move its prices more often or withdraw a quote altogether. A spread that looked tight seconds earlier can therefore widen before an order executes.
Displayed spread versus the price of a larger order
A quote represents available quantity, not an unlimited supply. In the $99 bid/$100 ask example, only 700 shares are offered at $100. If you submit a 1,000-share market buy, the first 700 shares may fill at $100 and the remaining 300 may execute at the next available asks, such as $100.05 or $100.10. Your effective average price will be above $100, even though the displayed spread was only $1.

The same effect occurs on a sale. If the displayed $99 bid covers 500 shares but you sell 1,000, later shares may execute at lower bids. This difference between the first quote and the average execution is often called market impact or slippage. It depends on:

- Order size relative to displayed and hidden liquidity.
- How many price levels contain usable volume.
- How quickly other orders arrive or cancel.
- Whether the market is moving while your order is being filled.
For that reason, a narrow top-of-book spread is only one liquidity signal. Check quote size, depth at multiple levels, volatility and quote stability before assuming an order will receive the midpoint or the displayed price.
How execution venues affect your fill
Your broker may route an order to an exchange, an electronic communication network (ECN), a market maker or an internal matching system. A market maker stands ready to buy or sell at publicly quoted prices. An ECN automatically matches buy and sell orders at specified prices. Brokers can route orders among multiple venues and must seek the best execution reasonably available under the circumstances.
Routing affects the result because venues can show different prices, sizes, fees and queue positions. A route that offers a fraction of a cent of price improvement may take longer, while a fast-moving market can move away during that delay. Price improvement is possible, but it is not guaranteed, and best-execution obligations do not guarantee a better price on every order.

Market orders versus limit orders
The choice between a market and limit order is a choice between execution certainty and price control. Neither order type removes liquidity risk.
| Feature | Market order | Limit order |
|---|---|---|
| Execution certainty | Usually high during normal trading, but not guaranteed in a halt or disconnected market | Not guaranteed; executes only at the limit price or better |
| Price control | No maximum purchase price or minimum sale price is specified | Sets the worst acceptable price |
| Fill risk | May fill immediately at multiple prices | May remain unfilled, be partially filled or expire |
| Fast-market sensitivity | Can suffer slippage as quotes change | Protects against an unfavorable price, but the market can move away without a fill |
| Typical use | When completing the trade promptly matters most and size is modest relative to liquidity | When price discipline matters more than immediate completion |
When a market order can be reasonable
A market order may fit a highly liquid security, a small order and a situation where entering or exiting promptly is more important than controlling the exact price. Look at the current size before submitting it; a tight spread with only a few shares available does not make a large market order low-risk.
When a limit order can be safer
A limit order is useful when you have a firm maximum purchase price or minimum sale price, when the security is thinly traded, or when volatility is high. A buy limit at $100 will not execute above $100; a sell limit at $99 will not execute below $99. The trade-off is that the order may never fill, particularly if the market moves away or the quoted size is small.
Liquid and thin markets compared
| Characteristic | More liquid security | Thinner security |
|---|---|---|
| Typical spread | Often narrower, though it can widen during stress | Often wider and less stable |
| Displayed depth | More size near the best bid and ask | Small size; larger gaps between price levels |
| Quote stability | Quotes tend to refresh quickly as trades occur | Quotes may disappear or change sharply |
| Market impact | Small orders generally move price less | Even moderate orders can consume several levels |
| Ease of exiting | More likely to find a buyer or seller promptly | May require patience, a limit price or a concession |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. A normally liquid security can become difficult to trade during a market-wide shock, an unexpected announcement or a trading halt.

A practical process for judging a spread before trading
- Read both prices and quantities. Record the best bid, its available size, the best ask and its available size. Do not evaluate the gap without the quantities attached.
- Calculate the spread and midpoint. Subtract bid from ask and note the midpoint. Convert the spread to a percentage when comparing securities at different prices.
- Inspect multiple levels. If your order is larger than the best quote, look at Level 2 or another depth display to estimate how many price levels may be consumed. Depth data can be incomplete or change before execution.
- Check volatility and timing. Be especially cautious around market open, close and scheduled news. Fast quotes can make a displayed spread stale almost immediately.
- Compare size with available liquidity. An order that is a small fraction of the displayed quantity is less likely to move through many levels than one that exceeds it.
- Choose the order type deliberately. Use a market order only when available-price uncertainty is acceptable. Use a limit order when avoiding an unfavorable price is more important than certainty of execution.
- Review the completed fill. Compare the average execution price with the quote when you submitted the order, and check for partial fills and multiple prices. This creates a realistic record of your trading cost.
Worked example: a 1,000-share purchase
Assume the order book shows:
| Price level | Shares offered |
|---|---|
| $100.00 | 700 |
| $100.05 | 200 |
| $100.10 | 300 |
The displayed best ask is $100.00. A 1,000-share market buy would consume all 700 shares at $100.00 and 200 at $100.05, then 100 at $100.10. The estimated cost is $70,000 + $10,010 + $10,010 = $90,020, for an average of $100.02 per share. The first quote did not describe the whole order’s price.
A 1,000-share buy limit at $100.00 would cap the price but could fill only part of the order—or none—if sellers at $100.00 are exhausted before your order reaches the queue. A limit at $100.10 permits the same three levels but still does not guarantee a fill if quotes change.
Historical context: why no single “normal” spread exists
The SEC cited a one-cent bid-ask spread for the 126 most liquid U.S. stocks in a 2013 commentary. That was a historical observation about a selected group, not a current universal standard. Spreads vary by security, venue, price, market conditions, order size and time of day. A one-cent quote in one security says nothing about the likely spread or execution cost of another.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Assuming the midpoint is available. Fix: treat it as a benchmark, not a guaranteed execution price.
- Looking only at spread width. Fix: include displayed size, deeper levels, volatility and quote cancellations.
- Using a market order because the spread looks narrow. Fix: compare your order size with the quoted quantity and consider a limit order.
- Confusing no commission with no trading cost. Fix: account for the spread, slippage, fees and any market impact.
- Believing best execution guarantees the best possible price. Fix: understand that the duty is to seek the best reasonably available result under the circumstances; prices can move while an order is routed.
- Ignoring partial fills. Fix: monitor remaining quantity, order duration and expiration rules, especially for limit orders.
Key takeaway
The bid-ask spread is the visible price of immediacy: buyers crossing the market generally pay the ask, and sellers crossing it generally receive the bid. Liquidity determines how reliable that quote is for your order. Evaluate spread, size, depth, volatility and quote stability together, then choose between market and limit orders based on whether execution certainty or price protection matters more.
