Alphabet is the better Buffett-style stock for new money when its valuation is roughly comparable with Apple’s. Alphabet’s latest filings show 23%–24% revenue growth, rising operating income and a newly significant Google Cloud profit contribution. Apple remains the stronger choice for investors who value predictable buybacks, dividends, lower infrastructure spending and a mature ecosystem. The decision is conditional, not a live buy signal: refresh each company’s share price, forward P/E and free-cash-flow yield before investing.
Which is the better Buffett stock: Alphabet or Apple?
Use a two-part test. Choose Alphabet if you want faster operating growth, expanding Cloud economics and a very large liquidity cushion without paying a materially higher multiple. Choose Apple if dependable capital returns, lower reinvestment requirements and ecosystem durability matter more than headline growth.

Neither stock is automatically superior at every price. A premium valuation can eliminate Alphabet’s growth advantage, while an Apple valuation that assumes uninterrupted iPhone and Services compounding can remove its margin of safety.
How fast are Alphabet and Apple growing?
Alphabet has the clearer recent growth and operating-income momentum. Apple is larger and highly profitable, but its results remain more dependent on the iPhone cycle.

Alphabet’s 2026 results
| Metric | Q2 2026 | Six months ended June 30, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $119.796 billion, up 24% year over year | $229.692 billion, up 23% year over year |
| Operating income | $40.770 billion | $80.466 billion |
| Google Services operating income | $39.544 billion | $80.133 billion |
| Google Cloud operating income | $8.814 billion | $15.412 billion |
Cloud’s contribution matters to the Buffett-style case because Alphabet is no longer relying solely on advertising profits to fund its future. Search and other Services still supply most operating income, but Cloud gives the company another large business with reported profitability.
Apple’s fiscal 2026 results
| Metric | Nine months ended June 27, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $364.357 billion |
| Operating income | $122.432 billion |
| Net income | $101.464 billion |
| Services revenue | $91.728 billion, compared with $80.408 billion a year earlier |
| iPhone revenue | $191.642 billion |
Services is becoming a substantial recurring layer through subscriptions, payments and other offerings, but the iPhone still generated more than twice the nine-month Services revenue in the period shown. That concentration makes product launches, upgrade timing, geographic demand and component costs central to Apple’s investment case.

Apple’s latest cash figures show much lighter capital requirements. Alphabet is producing enormous operating cash flow, but most of it is currently being reinvested in technical infrastructure.

Alphabet’s reinvestment trade-off
- Operating cash flow for the first six months of 2026 was $84.859 billion.
- Property and equipment spending was $80.598 billion, up from $39.643 billion in the comparable 2025 period.
- Management expects technical-infrastructure investment to increase, including servers, network equipment and data centers.
The near match between operating cash flow and capital spending means Alphabet’s reported growth should not be treated as fully available free cash flow. Higher depreciation, execution problems or slower monetization of artificial-intelligence infrastructure could reduce returns on that investment.
Apple’s cash-return model
- Operating cash flow for the first nine months of fiscal 2026 was $116.996 billion.
- Property and equipment spending was $6.799 billion.
- Apple paid $11.778 billion in dividends and repurchased $62.094 billion of common stock in the same period.
This is the classic mature-compounder profile: modest physical reinvestment, large operating cash generation and substantial distributions to shareholders. Buybacks can lift per-share results, but they do not remove dependence on future product demand or guarantee that shares are repurchased at attractive prices.
What are the balance-sheet cushions?
Both companies report ample liquidity, although Alphabet also disclosed a material legal and regulatory obligation.

| Alphabet, June 30, 2026 | $242.474 billion combined | $17.4 billion of short-term accrued legal and regulatory fines and settlements | |
| Apple, June 27, 2026 | $39.544 billion | $106.973 billion | Management cites cash, securities, operating cash generation and debt-market access as sufficient for expected needs |
Alphabet’s management similarly said existing cash, short-term marketable securities and cash flows from operations and financing should remain sufficient. The size of that reserve supports continued investment, but it should not be read as protection against regulatory remedies, litigation or a poor infrastructure cycle.
What does Berkshire Hathaway’s position tell investors?
Berkshire Hathaway’s 2025 annual-report table listed Apple at 1.6% of Berkshire and a $61.962 billion market value at December 31, 2025. The five largest equity holdings represented 65% of Berkshire’s equity-securities portfolio, so Apple remains a major signal of Berkshire’s public-stock preferences.
Alphabet’s second-quarter 2026 filing separately disclosed that it sold $10.0 billion of shares on June 4, 2026, in a private placement to an affiliate of Berkshire Hathaway. That is evidence of an investment by Berkshire or its affiliate; it should not be described as a personal Warren Buffett purchase.

Berkshire’s own principle is to seek businesses it understands well, whose leaders it respects and that it expects to compound over decades. The principle supports studying both companies, not copying a holding without checking today’s price and business conditions.

What are the main risks for each stock?
Alphabet risks
- Artificial-intelligence infrastructure: spending and depreciation could rise faster than revenue and profit from new services.
- Search disruption: changing user behavior or competing AI products could weaken the economics of the core Services business.
- Execution: large data-center and networking projects require sustained technical and managerial performance.
- Regulation and legal exposure: fines, settlements or structural remedies could affect cash flow and business practices.
- Cloud intensity: Cloud growth may require continued capital commitments before returns stabilize.
Apple risks
- iPhone concentration: product-cycle delays, weak upgrades or market saturation can affect a large share of revenue.
- Supply chain and components: manufacturing disruptions, tariffs or input-cost inflation can pressure margins.
- Geographic demand: currency movements and regional economic conditions can change sales quickly.
- Services expectations: the valuation may assume continued ecosystem monetization even if growth slows.
- Buyback dependence: per-share compounding benefits from repurchases, but the underlying business still has to generate the cash.
How should you compare the valuation before buying?
The decisive variable is the price paid, and current market data must be refreshed because no fixed multiple remains accurate for long. For each company, record the same-day share price, trailing P/E, forward P/E, operating-cash-flow trend and free-cash-flow yield. Then test whether the multiple assumes growth that the latest filings may not support.
- Check the latest diluted earnings per share and analyst forward earnings estimate.
- Compare forward P/E rather than relying only on trailing earnings, while noting the assumptions behind the forecast.
- Calculate free-cash-flow yield after capital spending; for Alphabet, treat infrastructure spending as a central sensitivity.
- Stress-test slower advertising, Cloud or iPhone growth and ask whether the purchase still offers an acceptable return.
- Review the next quarterly filing for changes in capex, buybacks, legal provisions and segment operating income.
A higher Alphabet multiple can erase its operating advantage. An Apple multiple that prices in flawless iPhone and Services execution can leave too little upside for the risks.

Which stock fits common investor priorities?
| Priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Faster reported growth and expanding profit engines | Alphabet | Recent revenue growth was 23%–24%, with profitable Cloud operations alongside Services. |
| Large, predictable shareholder distributions | Apple | Apple combined dividends and substantial repurchases with relatively low property-and-equipment spending. |
| Lower exposure to infrastructure reinvestment | Apple | Its latest nine-month property-and-equipment spending was far below Alphabet’s first-half outlay. |
| Liquidity for aggressive technology investment | Alphabet | Alphabet reported $242.474 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities at June 30, 2026. |
| Comfort with hardware-cycle risk | Depends on investor | Apple’s iPhone concentration and Alphabet’s AI, search and regulatory risks require different tolerances. |
What is the practical Buffett-style choice?
For a new position at roughly similar valuations, Alphabet has the stronger combination of growth, operating-income momentum, Cloud diversification and liquidity. Apple is the better fit when the investor values cash returned today, lighter capital spending and an established ecosystem over faster expansion. Recheck valuation and the next filings before acting; the cheaper risk-adjusted compounder, not the more famous holding, is the Buffett-style answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Warren Buffett personally buy Alphabet shares?
No public filing identifies a personal purchase by Buffett. Alphabet disclosed a private placement to an affiliate of Berkshire Hathaway, so the transaction should be attributed to Berkshire or that affiliate rather than to Buffett’s personal account.
How often should I refresh the Alphabet-versus-Apple comparison?
Recheck it after each company reports earnings and whenever either share price moves sharply. Updating the earnings estimates, capital-spending trend and free-cash-flow calculation prevents an old multiple from driving a new investment decision.
Can Apple’s buybacks make up for a weak iPhone cycle?
Repurchases reduce the share count, but they cannot replace lost operating profit indefinitely. Examine unit demand, upgrade timing and Services growth alongside the buyback authorization instead of treating repurchases as a substitute for business momentum.
What would show that Alphabet’s AI spending is paying off?
Look for revenue and operating-income growth that outpaces the increase in infrastructure spending, followed by improving cash generation after capital expenditures. Rising depreciation without corresponding monetization would be an early warning that returns are lagging investment.
