For XRP you plan to hold for years, use a self-custody hardware wallet such as the Ledger Nano X. For frequent payments, XRPL apps and day-to-day transfers, use Xaman. Keep only a spending amount in the mobile wallet and move long-term funds to hardware storage. A custodial service such as Uphold is convenient for buying, selling and converting to fiat, but the provider controls the keys.
There is no dated, independently audited study proving that one XRP wallet has the lowest theft or loss rate. The practical choice depends on custody, key isolation, XRPL compatibility, recovery responsibility, transfer friction and availability in your region.

The short answer: match the wallet to the job
| Use case | Best fit | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holding XRP for years | Ledger Nano X or another supported hardware wallet | Private keys remain isolated on a physical device; transactions require physical approval. | Less convenient for immediate access; you must protect the device and recovery backup. |
| Frequent XRPL payments and ecosystem use | Xaman | Non-custodial, XRPL-native mobile wallet designed for payments and XRPL applications. | Keys are used on an internet-connected phone, so phone security matters. |
| General multichain mobile use | Trust Wallet | Convenient when XRP is one asset among many in a broader wallet app. | Key management occurs on an internet-connected device and XRPL-specific features may be less central. |
| Buying, selling and fiat conversion | Uphold or a similar custodial service | Exchange-like workflow and convenient fiat access. | The service, not you, holds the private keys. |
| Other hardware options | Trezor; Tangem only after checking current support | Hardware alternatives may suit users who prefer a different device or backup design. | Confirm current XRP and XRPL feature support before purchase. |
This is a workflow recommendation, not a universal safety ranking. The XRP Ledger documentation defines a non-custodial wallet as one where you hold the secret keys. A custodial service keeps those keys for you. That distinction determines who can authorize a transaction and who is responsible for recovery.

Custody is the first XRP-wallet decision
Custodial wallets: convenient, but dependent on a provider
With a custodial account, your balance is recorded by a company that controls the signing keys. You log in with an account and password, and the provider processes withdrawals. This can simplify purchases, sales and fiat conversion, but it also introduces provider risk: withdrawals can be delayed, accounts can be restricted, and a failure at the service can affect access to your XRP.
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Custodial services can be useful as an on-ramp or trading venue. They are not the same as a private wallet that you control. Treat the balance as a claim on the service until you withdraw it to an address whose keys you hold.
Non-custodial wallets: you control the secret keys
In a non-custodial wallet such as Xaman, the wallet creates or imports the account keys and gives you responsibility for protecting the recovery material. The provider cannot normally reverse a transaction or restore access if you lose the required backup. That independence is the point, but it makes setup and backup discipline essential.
Hardware wallets: non-custodial keys with isolated signing
A hardware wallet stores private keys on a dedicated physical device. The companion application can display balances and prepare transactions, but the device performs the signing. Ledger’s XRP documentation says the Nano X keeps private keys isolated and requires physical validation on the device before a transaction is broadcast. This reduces exposure compared with keeping signing keys in an ordinary phone or computer, although it does not protect you from approving a fraudulent address or losing your recovery backup.
Why a Ledger Nano X fits long-term XRP storage
Ledger’s official XRP documentation lists the Nano X as supported and describes the companion Ledger Wallet app as the interface for managing an XRP account. The important security property is the separation between the app and the signing key: the app can construct a transaction, but you must confirm its details on the hardware device.
What the hardware workflow protects
- The private key is kept on the hardware device rather than exposed to the computer or phone used to prepare the transaction.
- A transaction cannot be signed solely by clicking in the companion app; physical confirmation on the device is required.
- You can keep the device offline between transactions, reducing routine online exposure.
What it does not protect
- It cannot stop you from approving the wrong destination if you fail to compare the address on the device screen.
- It cannot recover funds when the recovery backup is lost, destroyed or disclosed.
- It does not make a compromised exchange account safe before you withdraw XRP to your own address.
- It does not remove the need to verify whether an XRPL application or token operation is trustworthy.
Hardware-wallet setup checklist
- Buy the device from the manufacturer or a channel you can verify. Avoid a device that arrives with a pre-written PIN or recovery words.
- Install the official Ledger software from the manufacturer’s published source and connect the device only when you are ready to initialize it.
- Initialize the device yourself. Let it generate the recovery words; never accept words supplied by a seller, email or support agent.
- Write the recovery backup on paper or another offline medium and check every word against the device. Do not photograph it or store it in cloud notes.
- Set a device PIN that is not reused elsewhere. Keep the device and backup in separate secure locations.
- Install the XRP support required by the current Ledger software, create or add the XRP account, and confirm the account address on the device.
- Send a small test amount first. Confirm that it arrives at the intended address before moving the rest of your balance.
Prices, bundled services and regional availability change, and the cited documentation does not establish a universal total cost of ownership. Choose on the security workflow and current XRP support rather than an unverified price claim.
Why Xaman is suited to everyday XRPL activity
The XRP Ledger Learning Portal presents Xaman as a non-custodial, XRPL-specific wallet and identifies it as suitable for daily transactions. Its value is not merely that it holds XRP; it is designed around the ledger’s payments, tokens and application ecosystem.
Use Xaman for a controlled spending balance
Keep only the XRP you expect to use regularly in the mobile wallet. The remainder can stay on the hardware wallet. This limits the amount exposed if your phone is lost, unlocked or tricked into approving a malicious transaction, while keeping routine payments fast.
Set up Xaman safely
- Install the current Xaman application from the official mobile-store listing linked by the project.
- Create a new account on the phone rather than importing a recovery phrase that has been exposed elsewhere.
- Record the wallet’s secret recovery information offline. Anyone who obtains it can generally control the account.
- Enable the strongest device lock and biometric protection that you can use consistently.
- Review the account address and send a small amount from your hardware wallet or exchange before relying on it for payments.
- When connecting to an XRPL application, read the requested transaction and decline anything you do not understand.
A mobile wallet is convenient because the signing key is available when you need it. That same convenience means phone malware, unsafe backups and social-engineering attacks deserve more attention than they would for a device kept offline.
How the main alternatives compare
Trust Wallet
The XRPL Learning Portal identifies Trust Wallet as a suitable option for daily transactions. It can be attractive when you want one general-purpose app for several networks. The trade-off is focus: keys are managed on an internet-connected device, and the app may not expose every XRPL-native workflow as directly as Xaman.
Uphold and other custodial services
Uphold can simplify buying, selling and converting XRP to fiat. The service remains the custodian, so you do not possess the private key for the balance until you withdraw. Use a custodial account for the task it does well—on-ramp, off-ramp or trading—and withdraw long-term holdings to self-custody when you are comfortable managing the keys.
Trezor
The XRPL Learning Portal names Trezor as a hardware-wallet option. Before buying a specific model, verify current XRP support, the exact companion software, and whether the functions you need—sending, receiving and any planned XRPL application interaction—are supported in your region and device generation.

Tangem appears in current comparison coverage, but the available material does not provide enough primary documentation to make a definitive XRP recommendation. A practical two-wallet arrangement
For many holders, the most useful arrangement is not choosing one wallet for everything:
- Keep long-term XRP on a supported hardware wallet.
- Transfer a limited spending balance to Xaman when you expect regular payments or XRPL application use.
- Leave only the amount needed for an imminent trade or fiat conversion on a custodial service.
- Replenish the mobile balance from hardware storage in small, deliberate transfers rather than moving the entire reserve.
This arrangement separates high-value savings from daily activity. It also creates a clear recovery plan: the hardware wallet’s backup protects the reserve, while the mobile wallet’s backup protects the spending account.

From an exchange or custodial service to your wallet
- Open the receiving wallet and copy its XRP address directly from the wallet interface.
- Check the address character by character, preferably on the hardware device’s own screen when receiving to hardware storage.
- Determine whether the destination requires a destination tag. Exchanges commonly use one shared address with tags to identify individual customers; omitting a required tag can delay crediting even when the address is correct.
- Enter the destination address and tag exactly as shown. Do not invent a tag for a self-hosted account that does not request one.
- Send a small test amount and wait for the ledger confirmation and the receiving wallet’s balance update.
- Only after the test succeeds, send the remaining amount. Keep the withdrawal record and transaction ID.
From hardware storage to Xaman
- Open Xaman and copy the account address from the receive screen.
- On the Ledger device, open the XRP account and select the send function.
- Paste the Xaman address into the transaction form, then compare it with the address displayed on the hardware device before approving.
- Review the amount and destination tag, if any. Reject the transaction if the device display differs from the intended recipient.
- Confirm physically on the Ledger, wait for ledger confirmation, and verify receipt in Xaman.
Sending from Xaman
- Start the payment from the recipient’s verified address, not from a copied message or unsolicited QR code.
- Confirm the address, amount and any tag in Xaman’s signing screen.
- Check that the application is requesting an ordinary payment rather than an unfamiliar token or permission operation.
- Approve only after the details match your intention, then retain the transaction ID until the recipient confirms receipt.
Exchange storage versus self-custody
| Question | Custodial exchange account | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls signing keys? | The service | You |
| Ease of fiat conversion | Usually high | Requires a separate on-ramp or off-ramp |
| Recovery if you forget access details | Provider account-recovery process may help | No provider can restore a lost secret backup |
| Withdrawal availability | Subject to service policies, verification and regional rules | You can initiate transfers whenever the wallet and network are available |
| Responsibility for address errors | Still largely yours after confirmation | Entirely yours; XRP Ledger transactions are not ordinarily reversible |
Neither model is automatically right for every balance. A trader who needs rapid fiat conversion may accept custodial exposure for a limited amount. A long-term holder who wants control over access should not leave the entire reserve on an exchange merely for convenience.
Security failures and how to recover
Lost or damaged hardware device
If you still possess the recovery backup, initialize a replacement supported device and restore the account according to the manufacturer’s current instructions. If the backup is missing, assume the account cannot be recovered and move any accessible funds to a new account immediately.
Exposed recovery words
Treat exposed words as compromised. Create a new wallet with a fresh backup, verify the new address, and transfer funds before an attacker does. Never type recovery words into a website, chat or support form.
Wrong address or missing destination tag
First check the transaction status and destination. If the address is wrong, the network generally cannot reverse the payment; contact the recipient or service only through its official support channel. If the address is correct but a required tag was omitted, provide the transaction ID and ownership evidence to the receiving service. Do not send a second payment until the first problem is resolved.
Suspicious application request
Cancel the operation, disconnect the application and review your account activity from a trusted device. If you approved a transaction that transferred assets or granted an unfamiliar permission, move remaining funds to a fresh account and investigate the affected application before reconnecting.

How to choose in five questions
- Will you hold for years? Choose supported hardware storage.
- Will you make payments or use XRPL applications weekly? Use Xaman with a limited balance.
- Do you need one app for many networks? Consider Trust Wallet, accepting its internet-connected key management.
- Do you need immediate fiat conversion? A custodial service can help, but keep the balance there only for that purpose.
- Can you protect a recovery backup? If not, self-custody may create a greater personal risk than a carefully selected custodian; solve the backup problem before moving a large amount.
What the evidence can—and cannot—prove
The cited XRP Ledger and manufacturer materials establish custody models, hardware key isolation, physical transaction validation and the intended daily-use role of Xaman. They do not establish a dated, independent comparison of wallet theft rates, user-error losses, failure rates or lifetime costs. Claims that one named wallet is objectively the safest for every user go beyond that evidence.
Use the measurable workflow instead: keep long-term keys isolated, use an XRPL-native wallet for controlled daily spending, verify addresses and destination tags, test small transfers, and maintain offline recovery backups.
