The safest way to use expiring credit-card points is to open your issuer’s rewards dashboard, record the exact balance and deadline, and compare the live cash or statement-credit value with travel, gift-card and merchandise options. If the deadline is close and you cannot complete a trip, a cash-equivalent redemption is usually the most dependable choice. Transfer points only for a confirmed booking after checking the receiving loyalty program’s rules.
Expiration is not governed by one industry rule. The card product, account status, payment history, whether points were shared or promotional, and the issuer’s current terms can all affect whether a balance remains available. The redemption screen and account terms in effect when you act control the practical outcome.

Start with the live balance and deadline
Do not rely on a statement from memory or on a general rule you found for another card. Sign in to the issuer’s website or app and open the rewards area. Record the exact points balance, any separate promotional or shared balance, the displayed expiration date, and the account status. Save a screenshot or download the confirmation details so you can prove what the account showed when you made the decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the account conditions that can trigger forfeiture
- Whether the card account must remain open for points to stay valid.
- Whether closing, converting, replacing, or product-changing the card affects the balance.
- Whether delinquency, a returned payment, or another adverse status can cause forfeiture.
- Whether points were transferred in, shared with another member, or awarded as a limited promotion.
- Whether the displayed date applies to the entire balance or only to a specific batch of points.
Use the issuer’s current terms and the redemption page together. A generic rewards page can describe the program broadly, while the card-specific terms determine eligibility and expiration for your account.

How major programs handle expiration
The following policies are the ones stated by the issuers for the programs listed. They are not a universal rule for every card, and an issuer can apply additional conditions to a particular product or account.
| Program | Expiration or forfeiture rule | Redemption routes listed by the issuer | What to verify before acting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chase Ultimate Rewards | Points do not expire while the account remains open; closure or an adverse account status can forfeit points. | Cash back, statement credit, gift cards, merchandise, Chase Travel and partner transfers. | Compare the simple cash or gift-card value with the value of a specific travel booking or transfer. |
| American Express Membership Rewards | Membership Rewards points have no expiration date, but forfeiture can depend on the card product and payment status. | Travel, gift cards, covering charges, shopping, charity and partner transfers. | Confirm that your card and payment status permit the redemption; a transfer to an airline program cannot be reversed. |
| Citi ThankYou | Expiration depends on the card and its terms. Shared points expire 90 days after receipt. | Travel, gift cards, cash, covering purchases, shopping, transfers, sharing and charity. | Open My Points Summary and read the current card-specific value and expiration language. |
| Wells Fargo Rewards | Rewards points do not expire while the credit-card account is open. | Cash, gift cards, charity, travel, merchandise, pay with rewards and transfers. | Check the current catalog because reward items and required point amounts can change or be withdrawn without notice. |
Chase states that Ultimate Rewards points do not expire as long as the credit-card account stays open. American Express says Membership Rewards points do not have expiration dates, while also warning that product and payment conditions can lead to forfeiture. Wells Fargo states that points do not expire while the card account is open. Citi directs cardholders to the card’s terms because expiration varies, and shared Citi points have a 90-day life after receipt.
Compare value before choosing a redemption
Open each redemption category far enough to see the current number of points required and the exact cash, credit, travel price, or item you would receive. A point balance is not useful by itself; the relevant comparison is what the same points buy through each available channel today.
Cash back or statement credit
Cash and statement credits are the cleanest deadline option because they do not require you to travel, wait for an award seat, or accept a particular merchant’s terms. Chase says 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points are typically worth $100 as cash back, gift cards, or a statement credit. That is a typical Chase value for those categories, not a guaranteed value for every issuer or card.
Choose cash or a statement credit when the displayed value is acceptable and the other options require more time or introduce cancellation risk. A statement credit reduces the card balance; cash back may be delivered through the method shown in the issuer’s redemption flow. Read the final confirmation for the amount, posting destination, and any conditions before submitting.

Travel through the issuer’s portal
A travel portal can produce more value than a one-cent-per-point cash redemption in some Chase bookings, but the result depends on the live itinerary, dates, taxes, fees, and the card’s current terms. Compare the points-only price with the cash price for the identical flight, hotel, or rental-car reservation. Check cancellation and change rules before treating the portal quote as superior; a nominally higher value can be less useful if the reservation is restrictive.
Portal inventory and required points can change. If the deadline is near, do not assume that a trip you might take later will remain available at the displayed rate. Reserve only when the dates, traveler names, and cancellation terms are acceptable.
Transfers to airline or hotel programs
A transfer can be valuable when you have a specific award booking and the partner has confirmed availability. It is risky as a speculative move. American Express states that points transferred to an airline loyalty program cannot be transferred back, so an unused transfer can strand value in a program with different expiration, account, or redemption rules.
- Find the exact award itinerary in the receiving program before moving points.
- Confirm the transfer ratio, minimum or maximum amount, taxes and fees, and the partner’s cancellation policy on the final booking screen.
- Transfer only the number of points required for that confirmed reservation, plus no speculative cushion.
- Save the transfer and booking confirmations, including the receiving account number and ticket or reservation code.
Do not transfer merely to stop an issuer deadline unless the receiving program’s rules and your intended use are clear. The transfer changes the governing terms and may remove the ability to return to the issuer’s cash or portal options.
Gift cards
Gift cards can be a practical middle ground when you know you will spend with the listed merchant. Compare the points required with the cash value, then read the card’s expiration, inactivity, geographic, online-use, and return restrictions. Merchant terms apply independently of the credit-card rewards program. A gift card is not automatically better than cash simply because it is labeled a bonus redemption.

Covering purchases, pay with rewards, and shopping
Some programs let you apply points to eligible purchases already charged to the card or use points at checkout. These methods can be convenient when the transaction is already planned, but inspect the conversion shown for that specific purchase. The value may differ from the issuer’s cash or statement-credit rate, and an item purchased with points is still subject to the merchant’s return policy.

Merchandise is usually a fallback after you compare the item’s point price with its ordinary cash price, shipping, taxes, warranty, and return terms. Catalog prices and required points can change. If the deadline is imminent, merchandise can also introduce delivery and return complications that a cash-equivalent redemption avoids.
Charity and sharing
Charitable donations and point sharing are listed options for some programs, including Citi and Wells Fargo. Use them when the recipient and purpose are already decided, and confirm whether shared points carry a shorter validity period. Citi’s stated 90-day expiration for shared points means sharing is not a way to create a permanent extension.
Choose by the time remaining
More than a month before expiration
You have time to price a real travel plan rather than accepting the first option. Check the issuer’s cash rate, portal pricing for the dates you can actually use, and partner awards that are available now. Keep the balance in the issuer program until a specific redemption is ready, because transfer ratios, portal prices, reward catalogs, and partner requirements can change.
One to four weeks before expiration
Set a personal cutoff earlier than the displayed deadline. If a transfer or travel booking fails, you need time to use a cash, statement-credit, or gift-card alternative. Recheck the redemption amounts on the day you act and make sure the account remains in good standing. Do not wait for a hoped-for promotion when the balance could otherwise be redeemed at an acceptable value.

Within a few days
Prioritize certainty. Open the cash and statement-credit screens first, then compare a gift card for spending you already expect. Use travel only when the itinerary is available, the booking can be completed before the deadline, and the cancellation terms are acceptable. Avoid speculative transfers and merchandise orders that create delivery or return risk.
On the displayed deadline
Follow the issuer’s stated cutoff time and time zone, not just the calendar date. Complete the final submission before that cutoff, wait for the confirmation page or number, and save it. A balance shown in an account does not prove that an unfinished cart or abandoned transfer was redeemed.
What happens if you close or change the card?
Closing a card can affect points even when the program normally advertises no expiration. Chase warns that closure or an adverse account status can forfeit Ultimate Rewards points. Other programs tie eligibility to the specific card product or payment status. Before closing, converting, or replacing a card, open the rewards terms and ask the issuer what will happen to the existing balance and any linked accounts.
If the issuer confirms that points will be forfeited, redeem them before the account action. A cash or statement-credit redemption is generally easier to complete than arranging a new travel booking under pressure. Do not assume that transferring points to another person or program automatically preserves their value; the receiving program can impose its own expiration and cancellation rules.
Issuer-specific action plan
Chase Ultimate Rewards
Start by comparing the typical 10,000-point-to-$100 cash, gift-card, or statement-credit value with the exact value of a Chase Travel reservation or partner transfer. Keep the account open and in acceptable standing while you decide. If closure is planned, redeem before the closure takes effect and retain the confirmation.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
American Express Membership Rewards
Review the card product and payment status even though the program says points have no expiration dates. For a transfer, locate the award first and move only the required amount. American Express says an airline transfer cannot be reversed, so a transfer without a confirmed use can leave you with fewer flexible choices.
Citi ThankYou
Use My Points Summary to identify the applicable expiration and card-specific redemption values. Treat shared points separately: Citi states that they expire 90 days after receipt. If you are considering sharing, make sure the recipient can use them within that period instead of assuming the action extends the original balance.
Wells Fargo Rewards
Although points do not expire while the card account is open, inspect the current reward catalog immediately before redeeming. Wells Fargo says reward items and required point amounts can change or be withdrawn without notice. Capture the value and availability shown at checkout, especially for merchandise, gift cards, and travel.

Rewards programs reserve the ability to change redemption values and requirements. A Federal Register document notes that programs may change reward value, and Wells Fargo says reward items and required amounts can change or be withdrawn without notice. Portal prices, transfer ratios, promotions, and card eligibility are therefore time-sensitive. Treat any value quoted in an old article, email, or spreadsheet as a starting point, not as the amount you will receive today.
No single cents-per-point figure is established as the best value across issuers. Your comparison should use the exact redemption available for your account, the flexibility you need, and the likelihood that you will use the reward before another rule or price change.
Final deadline checklist
- Open the issuer dashboard and write down the exact balance, expiration date, and account status.
- Separate ordinary, shared, pooled, and promotional points and read the rule for each category.
- Check whether closure, conversion, delinquency, or payment problems could forfeit the balance.
- Price cash back or a statement credit first, then compare travel, gift cards, and merchandise using the live redemption screens.
- For travel transfers, find a confirmed booking, verify partner cancellation and expiration rules, and transfer only the amount needed.
- Submit the redemption before the displayed cutoff, including any stated time-zone requirement.
- Save the confirmation number, redeemed amount, destination, and date.
The best redemption is the one that preserves acceptable value without adding a deadline you cannot meet. Cash or a statement credit is the dependable fallback; travel or a transfer can be better only when a specific, usable booking justifies the extra conditions.
