The simplest way to invest in defense without betting on one stock is to buy a diversified defense exchange-traded fund (ETF) or mutual fund through a brokerage account. These funds hold baskets of defense, aerospace, technology, logistics, cybersecurity or related companies, so one contract loss or product failure is less likely to dominate your result. They do not remove risk: a focused sector fund can still fall when defense valuations, government budgets, interest rates or markets turn against it.

Use a defense fund as a focused satellite holding beside a diversified core portfolio. Before buying, compare the fund’s mandate, geography, concentration, expense ratio, trading liquidity, operating history and special risks. The figures below are dated snapshots from fund issuers and can change; check the current prospectus, holdings, bid-ask spread, premium or discount to net asset value (NAV), tax treatment and account costs before trading.

What you are buying when you choose a defense fund

An ETF pools investor money and trades throughout the day on an exchange like a stock. A mutual fund also pools assets, but investors generally buy or redeem shares at the next calculated NAV rather than at an intraday market price. Both structures can spread company-specific risk across many holdings, but neither is automatically broadly diversified. A fund may still be concentrated in one industry, a few contractors, one country or a single government-spending cycle.

Defense-company revenue usually depends on contracts, procurement schedules, export approvals and public budgets. A geopolitical crisis can increase attention on the sector without producing an immediate gain for every holding. Contracts can be delayed, cancelled, repriced or awarded to a competitor. Thematic funds can underperform broad-market funds for long periods, even when the long-term theme remains intact.

Defense funds to compare

The following choices illustrate different ways to obtain pooled exposure. Expense ratios and holdings are issuer-reported snapshots dated in October 2026 unless otherwise noted, not permanent terms.

Fund Approach Geography Holdings Expense ratio Inception and trading Key considerations
IDEF Actively managed exposure to defense-related industrial and technology companies that management believes can benefit from increased global defense and security spending. Primarily U.S.-listed companies, with holdings determined by the manager. 153 (October 15, 2026) 0.55% (October 15, 2026) May 19, 2025; trades on Nasdaq. Active decisions can depart from an index and may add manager and turnover risk. Holdings can change.
WDEF Tracks the WisdomTree Europe Defense Index. Europe-focused, described by the issuer as pure-play European defense exposure. Not stated in the issuer facts listed here. 0.45% net (October 16, 2026) July 17, 2025; exchange-traded. Can complement U.S. defense holdings or broad equity ETFs, but adds country, currency, political and European market-structure risks.
ARMY Global defense-innovation strategy. Global. 35 (October 16, 2026) 0.68% net, subject to a contractual cap through June 28, 2027. September 25, 2025; exchange-traded. Issuer warns of potentially high volatility and significant losses. Private-company or special-purpose-vehicle holdings can be difficult to value or sell.
DUTY Passively tracks the Solactive U.S. Defense Index. U.S.-focused. Not stated in the issuer facts listed here. 0.45% total (October 15, 2026) April 8, 2026; trades on the NYSE. Index constituents must derive at least 50% of revenue from defense systems and military platforms, defense technology, defense logistics, simulation or mission support, or cybersecurity and digital defense infrastructure. It is a new fund with concentration, tracking-error and passive-investment risks.
FSDAX Mutual-fund portfolio investing primarily in companies involved in defense or aerospace products and services. Not limited to a single region in the issuer description. Not stated in the issuer facts listed here. Not stated in the issuer facts listed here. Mutual-fund structure; trade and pricing mechanics differ from ETFs. Fidelity labels it non-diversified, so a larger position in one issuer can produce greater share-price fluctuation. Government regulation and spending policy affect the sector.

How to choose among the approaches

Decide whether you want active or rules-based selection

IDEF gives a manager discretion to select and change holdings. That may help when the manager identifies suppliers, technologies or contract beneficiaries that a fixed index would miss, but it creates manager-selection risk and can make the portfolio less predictable.

WDEF and DUTY follow stated indexes. Rules-based funds make their inclusion criteria easier to audit, but they still track a methodology rather than an investor’s personal definition of defense. Review rebalancing schedules, eligibility rules and weighting caps in the current index documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FSDAX is a mutual-fund portfolio rather than an exchange-traded index product. Its non-diversified designation means you should inspect the latest portfolio before assuming that the fund spreads risk evenly.

Match geography to the risk you already own

A U.S.-focused fund such as DUTY may fit an investor whose existing international allocation is substantial but whose portfolio has little U.S. defense exposure. WDEF can add European contractors and reduce reliance on one country’s procurement cycle, while introducing currency movements, European political decisions and different trading conditions. ARMY is global, but foreign-market and currency risk apply, and the fund’s innovation focus can produce larger swings than a mature, broad industrial basket.

Geographic diversification is not the same as sector diversification. U.S., European and global defense funds can all decline together if investors revalue the sector or if a broad market sell-off forces risk reduction.

Look beyond the number of holdings

A fund with 153 holdings is not automatically safer than one with 35. Check the percentage in the largest 10 positions, the weighting method, overlap with your other funds and the share of assets in small or private companies. Several holdings may depend on the same aircraft program, government customer, component supply chain or procurement budget.

Compare the expense ratio correctly

An expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and reduces returns relative to the portfolio’s gross performance. The 0.45% and 0.55% figures above are not directly interchangeable unless you confirm whether each is a net or total expense ratio and whether a waiver or cap applies. ARMY’s 0.68% net ratio is subject to a contractual cap through June 28, 2027, so read the current prospectus for what happens after that date. A mutual fund may also have transaction rules, minimums or share-class expenses that are not captured by a single headline figure.

For scale, a 0.45% annual expense ratio would cost approximately $45 per year on a $10,000 balance before investment performance, while 0.55% would be about $55 and 0.68% about $68. The actual dollar amount changes with the account value, and the fee is normally reflected in the fund’s NAV rather than billed separately. Brokerage commissions, bid-ask spreads, taxes and any account-level charges are additional. A low expense ratio is useful, but it is not a reason to choose a fund whose mandate or liquidity does not fit.

Check liquidity before placing an order

For an ETF, inspect assets, average trading volume, the bid-ask spread and the historical premium or discount to NAV. Use a limit order when the spread is material, especially near the market open or close. A low fee cannot compensate for a wide spread or a price that regularly departs from NAV. Mutual funds do not have an intraday spread, but they price once per business day and may impose redemption or transaction rules.

What defense-spending growth can and cannot tell you

European spending figures help explain why investors are watching the sector, but they are not a forecast for any single fund. A 2025 European Parliament Research Service briefing reproduced EU member-state defense-spending totals of €147 billion in 2014 and €326 billion in 2024. That is more than a doubling over the period, yet budgets can be directed toward domestic suppliers, infrastructure, personnel, munitions, maintenance or imported equipment in different proportions. A rising total therefore does not guarantee that every listed contractor, technology company or fund holding receives more revenue.

There is also a timing gap between an announced budget, a signed contract, deliveries and recognized earnings. Investors may bid up shares when they anticipate spending, leaving less upside if the eventual award is delayed or smaller than expected. Conversely, a company can benefit from a multiyear program even when the latest news cycle is quiet. Treat spending data as context for a thesis, not as a timing signal or guarantee.

Step-by-step: buying a defense ETF through a broker

  1. Define the role. Decide the maximum percentage of your investable assets that can be in a single sector. Build emergency savings and a diversified core of broad-market assets first; a defense fund should not replace those foundations.
  2. Screen the funds. Compare mandate, region, holdings, top-position weights, expense ratio type, inception date, assets, volume, spread and the latest prospectus. An ETF screener can help create a shortlist, but verify every figure on the issuer’s current website. For DUTY, confirm that its 50%-revenue eligibility test and other index rules match your objective. For ARMY, determine whether private-company or special-purpose-vehicle exposure is acceptable.
  3. Review the risk disclosures. Read the statutory prospectus and summary prospectus for concentration, foreign investment, currency, tracking error, active-management, liquidity, new-fund and principal-loss risks. Confirm whether a fee waiver or contractual cap has an end date.
  4. Check account and tax treatment. Verify commission policies, bid-ask costs, dividend handling, taxable-account consequences and whether the fund is eligible for your retirement account. International holdings may create additional tax forms or withholding considerations; obtain advice for your jurisdiction.
  5. Place the order. Search the exact ticker, confirm the fund name and exchange, review the live quote and spread, then use a limit order if appropriate. Do not assume the last traded price equals NAV.
  6. Document the allocation. Record the purchase date, price, share count, intended portfolio percentage and the reason you selected the fund. This prevents a short-term headline from silently changing your plan.
  7. Rebalance deliberately. Set a calendar review or a percentage band. Rebalance because your allocation has moved outside the band or the fund’s mandate has changed—not simply because a defense headline is prominent.

Risks that diversification inside the fund does not remove

Sector and policy risk

Defense spending is controlled by legislatures, executives, alliances and procurement agencies. A change in administration, budget priorities, export rules or acquisition timing can affect many holdings simultaneously. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in a December 12, 2024 Brussels speech, “Investing in defence is an investment in our security.” That policy commitment does not guarantee contracts, earnings or share-price gains.

Valuation and market risk

Investors may price expected spending increases before money reaches contractors. If expectations become excessive, a fund can fall even while defense budgets rise. Interest rates, recession fears and a general equity sell-off can overwhelm company-specific developments.

International and currency risk

European and global funds expose you to exchange-rate changes, local regulation, political instability, different disclosure standards and market holidays. A foreign share can lose value for a U.S.-dollar investor even when its local price is unchanged.

Private-security and valuation risk

ARMY’s disclosures include private-company and special-purpose-vehicle valuation and liquidity risk. A private security may not have a continuous market price, and a fund may be unable to sell it promptly at an attractive value. That can make NAV less certain and redemptions more difficult during stressed markets.

Concentration and correlation risk

FSDAX is explicitly non-diversified. Other funds can also be concentrated through index weights or common suppliers. Counting every legal holding can overstate diversification when the companies share customers, programs or economic drivers.

New-fund and tracking risk

DUTY began on April 8, 2026, while IDEF, WDEF and ARMY also have short operating histories. New funds have less live performance history, and assets, spreads and trading patterns can change as investors adopt or abandon them. Passive funds can differ from their indexes because of fees, trading costs, sampling and corporate actions.

How much should a defense fund be?

There is no universal correct percentage. Set the position size by asking how much sector volatility you can tolerate, how much defense exposure already exists in broad funds, and whether your income, employer or local economy is already tied to government contracting. A small satellite position limits the damage from a sector drawdown; a large position makes your financial plan dependent on one policy theme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Conservative use: choose a modest allocation beside a broad-market core and rebalance with a predetermined band.
  • Geographic complement: pair a U.S.-oriented holding with international exposure only if the added currency and political risks fit your plan.
  • Innovation tilt: treat a global innovation fund with private-company exposure as a higher-risk sleeve, not as a substitute for diversified equities.
  • Income needs: do not rely on a sector fund for predictable cash flow; distributions and prices can vary.

Monitoring checklist after purchase

  • Read each annual and semiannual report and compare the actual top holdings with your original thesis.
  • Check whether the fund changed its index, mandate, fee waiver or contractual cap.
  • Watch assets, average volume, bid-ask spread and ETF premium or discount to NAV.
  • Compare the position with your total portfolio so overlapping contractors do not create an accidental concentration.
  • Review tax lots before selling in a taxable account, and keep records of distributions.
  • Reassess if your risk capacity, time horizon or need for liquidity changes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the headline: a conflict or budget announcement can already be reflected in prices.
  • Confusing a fund with a guarantee: pooled ownership reduces single-company risk, not principal-loss risk.
  • Ignoring the core portfolio: a defense ETF can duplicate holdings in broad industrial, technology or international funds.
  • Using a market order in a thin ETF: a temporary spread can materially worsen your execution price.
  • Assuming “defense” means only weapons manufacturers: mandates may include software, cybersecurity, logistics, simulation, aerospace or other suppliers.
  • Overlooking the fee date: a net expense ratio supported by a temporary cap may rise when the agreement expires.
  • Expecting a short track record to prove skill: newer funds have not experienced every market and policy cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a defense ETF safer than buying one defense stock?

Usually it reduces the effect of one company’s contract loss, product failure or management problem because it owns a basket. It remains exposed to sector, policy, valuation, market and principal-loss risks, so it is not a safe or guaranteed investment.

Which defense fund has the lowest fee?

Among the dated figures listed here, WDEF and DUTY each show 0.45%, IDEF shows 0.55%, and ARMY shows 0.68% net subject to a cap through June 28, 2027. Confirm whether a figure is net or total, check the current prospectus and include spreads, taxes and account costs in the comparison.

What does DUTY’s 50% revenue test mean?

Companies included in its Solactive U.S. Defense Index must derive at least half of revenue from specified defense systems and military platforms, defense technology, logistics, simulation or mission support, or cybersecurity and digital defense infrastructure. Read the current methodology for details and rebalancing rules.

Can I combine a U.S. and European defense ETF?

You can, but combining them increases sector exposure rather than creating a diversified core portfolio. The European sleeve adds currency, political, country and market-structure risks. Check overlap and set a combined allocation limit before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might a global innovation fund be more volatile?

A strategy such as ARMY has only 35 listed holdings in the dated facts, focuses on innovation and may use private-company or special-purpose-vehicle securities. Those features can increase concentration, valuation uncertainty and liquidity risk.

Should I use an ETF or a mutual fund?

An ETF trades intraday and requires attention to spreads, execution price and NAV premiums or discounts. A mutual fund generally trades once daily at NAV and may have different minimums, transaction rules and share-class expenses. Choose the structure that fits your trading needs, costs and account.

The Bottom Line

A defense ETF or mutual fund can spread company-specific risk, but it cannot make a concentrated sector investment safe. Compare the current mandate, geography, holdings, fee structure, liquidity and disclosures, then keep the position sized as a satellite beside a diversified core.
