Every layer has a different cost and failure mode.
There is no universal hedge percentage. The right mix depends on your spending currency, liabilities, investment horizon, tolerance for drawdowns, tax rules and access to liquid instruments. A hedge can reduce losses, but it can also reduce gains, create margin or premium obligations and fail to track the portfolio closely.

What you are actually hedging
An Asia-Pacific equity portfolio can lose value for several independent reasons. Separating them prevents you from paying for the wrong protection.

Shares can fall because of a regional recession, a country-specific shock, a sector sell-off, changing interest-rate expectations or a broad global risk-off move. A short equity-index future, a protective put or a lower stock allocation is designed primarily for this risk.

Currency risk
If your investments are denominated in yen, Australian dollars, Korean won, Singapore dollars or other local currencies but your future spending is in another currency, exchange-rate movements change your home-currency return even when local share prices are unchanged. A currency forward, a currency-hedged fund or a deliberate decision to remain unhedged addresses this exposure; an equity put does not.
Concentration and factor risk
A fund can hold many companies yet still be concentrated in one country, industry, market-cap segment or growth/value factor. Investor.gov warns that a narrowly focused mutual fund or exchange-traded fund may not provide effective diversification. Reducing that concentration is often a cheaper and more durable hedge than adding a derivative.
Basis, liquidity and implementation risk
A hedge instrument may move differently from your holdings. The difference is basis risk. It can arise when a regional index does not match your country mix, when the option expiry does not match your holding period, or when currency exposures are rebalanced on different dates. Futures also require margin and rolling; options require a premium and can be expensive when implied volatility is high.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with allocation and diversification
Asset allocation is the first hedge because it changes how much risk the portfolio can take before any contract is purchased. Investor.gov describes allocation as dividing investments among stocks, bonds and cash in a way that reflects your time horizon and risk tolerance.
Reduce single-country exposure
List the portfolio’s look-through weights by country rather than relying on the fund name. A broad Asia-Pacific fund can still have a dominant exposure to one or two markets. Compare each country’s weight with the loss you could tolerate if that market closed or fell sharply. Use contributions, withdrawals and scheduled rebalancing to move toward your target instead of trading after a shock.
Check sector and factor concentration
Map the underlying companies into sectors and identify repeated exposures across funds. Two funds with different names may own many of the same technology, financial or semiconductor companies. Also check whether the portfolio is tilted toward small companies, high-growth shares, commodities or other factors that can amplify regional volatility.
Choose a practical rebalancing rule
Set a calendar review or a tolerance band around each target weight. A calendar rule is easier to follow; a tolerance band limits unnecessary turnover. Record the tax cost, bid-ask spread and fund trading cost before moving money. The objective is not to eliminate every fluctuation but to keep the portfolio within a risk range you can maintain during a drawdown.

Measure the result
Judge an allocation change by expected drawdown reduction, tracking error versus your original objective, liquidity, tax consequences and implementation cost. A change that appears defensive can introduce a different risk, such as long-duration bonds losing value when interest rates rise.
Decide whether to hedge the currency
Currency hedging is a separate decision from hedging Asia-Pacific share prices. Start with the currency of your future spending and liabilities, then consider your horizon and tolerance for exchange-rate volatility.
Remain unhedged
An unhedged position leaves local-currency gains and losses fully exposed to exchange rates. This can diversify a home-market portfolio. The Bank for International Settlements reports that the US dollar tends to appreciate when US equities fall, which can cushion an unhedged foreign portfolio for a dollar-based investor during some risk-off episodes. That relationship is not guaranteed, and it may not hold for every home currency or every Asia-Pacific currency.
Use a partial hedge
A partial hedge keeps some potential currency diversification while reducing the size of exchange-rate swings. The percentage can be set by policy and reviewed periodically rather than changed in response to headlines. The International Monetary Fund’s October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report reported hedge ratios, as of June 2020, of about 44% for insurers, 35% for pension funds and 21% for mutual funds. Those are observations of institutional practice, not a recommendation for an individual investor.
Use a full hedge
A full hedge aims to make the return track the underlying shares in the investor’s home currency. It can be appropriate when the portfolio funds a near-term liability in that currency and currency volatility would be especially damaging. It also removes any benefit from a favorable currency move and can produce recurring carry, roll and transaction costs.
Compare the costs before choosing a ratio
- Carry: the interest-rate differential embedded in a forward or swap can help or hurt the hedge.
- Roll cost: contracts that expire must be replaced, and the replacement price can differ from the expiring contract.
- Tracking difference: the hedge may not cover dividends, cash balances or every local-currency exposure in the portfolio.
- Rebalance frequency: a fixed hedge percentage drifts as asset values and exchange rates change.
- Counterparty and collateral terms: understand who must perform and what collateral or settlement obligations apply.
HSBC Asset Management’s October 2024 analysis notes that currency hedging can provide diversification without currency risk but adds costs. It also observes that equities are typically left unhedged because their own volatility is higher, while bond portfolios are more often hedged. The choice should follow your liabilities and risk budget, not a rule applied to every asset class.
Use equity-index futures when you need fast, liquid beta reduction
A short futures position on a closely matched regional or country index can reduce equity exposure without selling every share. SEBI describes index futures and options as an efficient way to buy or sell an index compared with trading a physical portfolio of constituent shares, because execution and settlement are simpler.

Match the index before calculating size
Compare the futures index with your holdings by country, sector, market capitalization, currency and dividend treatment. A broad regional future may be a poor hedge for a portfolio dominated by one country or sector. APRA’s treatment of proxy hedges emphasizes conservative treatment when a proxy is used and recognizes offsetting only when positions are sufficiently matched.
Recommended Free Tools
Estimate the notional hedge
Use the portfolio’s market value, its estimated beta to the chosen index and the percentage of equity risk you want to offset. In simplified form:
futures notional ≈ portfolio value × portfolio beta to the index × desired hedge percentage
Divide that notional by the contract’s value to estimate the number of contracts, then round in a way that does not create more exposure than intended. Beta is an estimate, not a constant; recalculate it when the portfolio or market regime changes.
Plan for margin and rolls
Futures require initial margin and daily variation-margin payments. A falling market may produce gains on the short future, but the account still needs liquid cash to meet margin calls before the hedge is closed or settled. Each expiry also creates roll risk: the next contract can trade at a premium or discount, and the basis can widen when liquidity is stressed.
When futures are a poor fit
- The available index has little correlation with your actual country or sector mix.
- The position is too small to meet the contract’s minimum notional without over-hedging.
- You cannot reliably fund variation margin.
- You need a defined floor on losses rather than a linear offset.
Use protective puts or put spreads for defined downside
Buying a put gives the right, but not the obligation, to sell at the strike price during the option term. If the underlying index falls below the strike, the option can offset losses after accounting for the premium. This defines a floor for the hedged index exposure, subject to basis and execution differences.
Protective put
A protective put provides the clearest insurance. Select an expiry that matches the period you need protection and a strike that reflects the loss you are willing to absorb before insurance begins. The premium is paid upfront and is lost if the option expires out of the money. Implied volatility, time to expiry, interest rates and market demand all affect that premium.

Put spread
Buying a put and selling a lower-strike put reduces the upfront premium. In return, protection stops below the lower strike. A spread can suit an investor who wants to cover a defined drawdown band rather than insure every extreme loss. The short leg introduces additional obligations and should be fully understood before trading.
Compare an option hedge with a futures hedge
| Characteristic | Index futures | Protective put | Put spread |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downside profile | Linear offset while the position is open | Protection below the selected strike, after the premium | Protection between the two strikes |
| Upfront cash | Margin rather than a full purchase price | Premium paid upfront | Net premium paid, usually lower than a single put |
| Upside participation | Reduced by the short futures exposure | Retained above the strike, less premium | Retained above the strike, less net premium |
| Main implementation risks | Basis, roll, margin and liquidity | Premium decay, implied volatility, basis and expiry | All option risks plus the capped protection below the lower strike |
SEBI’s framework illustrates that option premiums and hedging exposures can be subject to explicit limits. One cited rule limits total exposure related to option premium paid to 20% of the net assets of the investment strategy in the described framework. Regulatory treatment varies by country, fund structure and investor type, so verify the rule that applies to your account before trading.

Use bonds, cash and diversifiers deliberately
Moving part of the portfolio into government bonds, high-quality short-duration instruments or cash lowers equity beta without derivatives. Investor.gov includes stocks, bonds and cash as core allocation choices.
Match duration and credit quality to the job
Short-duration, high-quality holdings generally have less interest-rate sensitivity than long-duration bonds. Government bonds may still fall when rates rise, and credit instruments can weaken alongside equities during a stress event. Check duration, issuer quality, currency denomination and the liquidity you need for withdrawals.
Do not assume bonds will always offset shares
The correlation between bonds and equities changes with inflation, rates and the source of the shock. A bond allocation can fail to cushion an Asia-Pacific equity sell-off if rates rise at the same time or if the bonds are exposed to the same currency and credit risks. Treat the expected correlation as a planning assumption to monitor, not a guarantee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a hedge in a repeatable sequence
- Write the objective. State whether you are limiting a one-year drawdown, protecting a future spending currency, reducing daily volatility or avoiding a forced sale.
- Inventory exposures. Record look-through country, sector, factor and currency weights, plus the portfolio’s value, cash needs and tax basis.
- Set the strategic allocation. Choose the stock, bond and cash mix that fits your time horizon and risk tolerance before selecting a derivative.
- Choose the currency policy. Decide on no, partial or full hedging for each major currency exposure. Document the ratio and the review date.
- Estimate equity beta. Compare the portfolio with the candidate index over a period that includes more than one market condition. If the relationship is weak or unstable, reduce the hedge size or use a different index.
- Select the instrument. Use futures for liquid, linear and short-term beta reduction; puts for a defined floor; put spreads when a lower premium is worth giving up protection below the lower strike.
- Check operational capacity. Confirm contract specifications, minimum trade size, margin rules, option exercise and settlement, collateral liquidity, counterparty or clearing arrangements and tax treatment in your jurisdiction.
- Set a maximum budget. Include option premium, bid-ask spread, commissions, financing, currency carry, futures rolls and the cost of rebalancing.
- Enter gradually when appropriate. Staggering entry can reduce timing concentration, but it does not remove market or basis risk.
- Record the hedge. Log the instrument, notional, strike or expiry, hedge percentage, rationale, cash reserve and conditions for closing or rolling.
Monitor the hedge and know when it is failing
Review the exposure, not just the contract price
At each review, recalculate the portfolio’s country and currency weights, beta to the hedge index, remaining option time value, futures basis and cash available for margin. A hedge that made sense at entry can become an over-hedge after the portfolio falls or its composition changes.
Watch for these symptoms
- The portfolio falls more than the hedge gains: the index match or beta estimate may be poor.
- The hedge loses while shares rise: that is the normal cost of a short or protective position, but check whether the size exceeds the stated objective.
- Margin calls arrive during a decline: move only after confirming that liquid reserves can meet variation margin without selling long-term assets at a bad time.
- An option becomes very expensive to renew: compare a later expiry, a different strike, a spread or a smaller hedge rather than rolling automatically.
- Currency and equity losses occur together: the assumed diversification benefit did not appear in that episode; revisit the policy rather than assuming the relationship will reverse.
Costs, limits and evidence to keep in view
Hedging is an exchange of risks, not a free reduction in risk. Premiums, carry, roll losses, bid-ask spreads, taxes and financing can materially reduce returns. Derivatives can add leverage, margin calls, assignment or settlement obligations and counterparty exposure. A broad fund can still be concentrated, and a broad index future can still be a poor proxy.

The BIS has cited approximately $264 billion in foreign equities held by the pension funds of Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and Korea combined in 2019, illustrating the scale at which institutional currency and equity hedging decisions matter. The figure is historical and does not describe your portfolio or current market size.
The IMF reported that investors typically hedge about 50% to 70% of bond-portfolio currency exposure in practice and that a 100% hedge is not necessarily optimal. That observation concerns bond portfolios; it should not be transferred automatically to Asia-Pacific equities.
Examples of matching the hedge to the investor
Home-currency investor with a long horizon
An investor whose spending is far away may retain some currency exposure for diversification, reduce concentrated country and sector weights, and use a modest index hedge only when the portfolio exceeds the chosen equity-risk limit. The priority is a sustainable allocation and enough cash to avoid selling during a temporary decline.
Investor funding a near-term liability
Someone who must pay a known home-currency liability soon may favor a higher currency hedge and a shorter-duration, high-quality reserve. Equity puts can protect a defined period, but the premium and expiry must match the liability date; a hedge that expires early leaves the liability exposed.
Investor unable to meet margin calls
If liquid collateral is limited, a futures hedge may be unsuitable even when its quoted cost looks low. A smaller position, a defined-risk put or a lower equity allocation may be safer operationally. Never fund a margin call by selling an asset that the hedge was intended to protect.
How to choose the cheapest effective method
The cheapest quoted instrument is not necessarily the cheapest hedge. Compare the total cost of ownership and the amount of risk actually offset:
- For a permanent reduction in volatility, test whether a lower equity allocation or better diversification achieves the objective without recurring derivative costs.
- For a temporary, linear reduction in market beta, compare futures margin, roll history and basis with the trading cost of selling shares.
- For a known maximum-loss objective, compare put premium with the loss you are willing to retain and the cost of renewing protection.
- For currency exposure, compare the carry and tracking difference of a hedged vehicle or forward with the value of retaining possible currency diversification.
Use a hedge only when its expected benefit is clear, its proxy is sufficiently matched and you can meet every operational obligation through the entire hedge period.
Bottom line
Build the hedge in layers: diversify the Asia-Pacific allocation, choose a currency policy based on spending and liabilities, then add a closely matched future, protective put or put spread only for the residual risk you can measure and manage. Recheck basis, margin, premium, roll, liquidity, taxes and counterparty terms at every review. The best hedge is the one that reduces the specific drawdown you fear without creating a larger, less visible risk elsewhere.
