A durable approach combines several asset classes and market segments: non-U.S. stocks, U.S. value and smaller-company stocks, high-quality bonds or Treasuries, and—only where appropriate—real estate or commodities.
The correct mix is personal. Your time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, cash-flow needs, tax situation and investment goal determine how much equity, bond and alternative exposure is sensible. Start by measuring what you already own, remove hidden overlap, choose a complementary mix and rebalance to a written policy rather than chasing whichever market led most recently.

What diversifying away from AI stocks actually means
Diversification is not simply buying more tickers. The SEC describes it as spreading money among different investments and asset categories to reduce risk. That distinction matters because several funds can own the same mega-cap technology companies, leaving the portfolio dependent on one economic engine even when the account shows many positions.

A narrow technology, artificial-intelligence or growth fund may hold dozens of securities and still be concentrated by sector, country, company size and valuation style. The SEC warns that a mutual fund or ETF “won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” A portfolio can therefore need diversification both across asset classes and within equities.

Moving away from AI exposure does not require selling every technology company. It means identifying the risks you already have—large-company, U.S., growth, technology, long-duration equity and perhaps one currency—and adding exposures whose returns are not driven by exactly those factors.
First, audit your current concentration
Before buying a diversifier, create a look-through inventory of every account, including workplace plans and target-date funds. Record each holding’s percentage of the total portfolio, not just the percentage inside one account.
- List the actual underlying holdings. Download the latest holdings files or prospectuses for each fund. Note the largest companies, sector weights, country weights, market-cap ranges and the fund’s investment style.
- Group positions by risk driver. Mark U.S. mega-cap growth and technology, other U.S. equities, non-U.S. developed equities, emerging markets, government bonds, corporate bonds, cash, real estate and commodities. A company can appear in several funds, so count it once in the combined portfolio.
- Measure overlap. Two broad funds may share many of the same largest companies. A small-cap fund can still have a technology tilt, and a “balanced” fund can still hold a large equity allocation. Use the most recent holdings rather than a fund name as your evidence.
- Separate strategic exposure from temporary cash. Money needed for near-term spending should not be treated as a long-term diversifier. Keep the liquidity you need outside a risky allocation plan.
- Write down the problem you are solving. Examples include reducing dependence on U.S. technology earnings, lowering equity volatility, adding income, protecting a future spending date or broadening geographic exposure. One solution rarely solves all of these at once.
This audit prevents a common error: selling one technology fund and replacing it with another broad fund that owns nearly the same companies.

The main diversification routes
| Route | What it adds | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Non-U.S. developed and emerging-market equities | Different economies, currencies, industries and valuations | Currency, country, political, market-structure and valuation risk; check developed/emerging split and fees |
| U.S. value stocks | Exposure to companies priced more modestly relative to fundamentals and to sectors less dominant in growth indexes | Value can lag for long periods; examine profitability, sector concentration and turnover |
| U.S. small- and mid-cap stocks | Smaller-company exposure and a different earnings and financing cycle from mega-caps | Higher volatility, lower liquidity and greater business risk; compare profitability and costs |
| High-quality bonds and Treasuries | Income and a risk source distinct from equities | Interest-rate, inflation, duration and credit risk; match maturity and quality to the goal |
| Real estate | Exposure to property-related cash flows and a different industry mix | Interest-rate, property, liquidity, fee and concentration risk |
| Commodities or precious metals | Potentially different inflation and supply-demand exposures | Price volatility, storage or fund-structure costs, no guaranteed income and possible tax complexity |
| Broad-market or target-date allocation fund | One holding can combine stocks, bonds and other funds | Inspect holdings, fees, glide path, retirement-date assumptions and overlap |
These are tools, not a universal shopping list. An investor with a short horizon may need more high-quality, liquid assets; someone saving for a distant goal may be able to accept more equity volatility.
1. Add non-U.S. developed and emerging-market equities
International stocks are the most direct way to reduce reliance on the U.S. technology cycle. Developed markets often have larger weights in financials, industrials, health care, consumer companies and materials than U.S. mega-cap indexes. Emerging markets add exposure to different demographics, commodity producers and financial systems, but they also bring greater political, regulatory and market-access risks.
How to use international exposure
- Decide whether you want one fund covering both developed and emerging markets or separate sleeves that let you set the split yourself.
- Check whether the fund is market-cap weighted, equal weighted or deliberately tilted. A market-cap-weighted international fund will still have its own large-company and country concentrations.
- Review the currency policy. Unhedged funds let foreign-currency movements affect returns; hedged funds reduce that exposure but add implementation considerations and may not behave as expected in every market.
- Compare expense ratios, trading spreads, securities-lending policies and tax treatment. A low headline fee does not eliminate currency or country risk.
International diversification can disappoint for long stretches, so evaluate it as a strategic risk-management decision rather than a short-term trade. Vanguard reported that a $100 investment in U.S. stocks grew to $334 by the end of 2024, an annualized 13% return, while a similar investment in non-U.S. stocks reached $160, an annualized 5% return. That historical comparison is not a forecast and does not establish which market will lead next.

2. Tilt toward value and smaller companies
A total-market U.S. fund is broader than a mega-cap technology fund, but its market-cap weighting still gives the largest companies the greatest influence. If your existing holdings are heavily tilted toward large growth companies, a deliberately chosen value, small-cap or small-cap-value fund can change the portfolio’s factor exposure.
Value exposure
Value strategies generally emphasize companies that appear less expensive relative to measures such as earnings, book value or cash flow. Their sector mix can differ materially from growth indexes, often increasing financials, industrials, energy or consumer businesses. The trade-off is that value can underperform growth for years, and a cheap company may be cheap because its business is weakening. Review profitability, debt, sector weights, index methodology and turnover rather than relying on the word “value.”
Small- and mid-cap exposure
Smaller companies have different financing needs, customer bases and competitive risks from mega-caps. They can be more sensitive to interest rates and recessions, and their shares may be less liquid. A small-cap fund is therefore not a low-risk substitute for technology; it is a different equity risk. Compare the fund’s profitability screen, number of holdings, rebalancing schedule, bid-ask spreads and expense ratio.
Vanguard’s educational guidance recommends including large-, mid- and small-cap companies and spreading exposure across industries. That does not require equal weights. It means recognizing that a portfolio concentrated in the largest growth companies is missing other parts of the equity market.
3. Use high-quality bonds and Treasuries
High-quality bonds can provide income and a return pattern that is not identical to equities. The SEC lists corporate and municipal bonds, bond funds, money-market funds and U.S. Treasury securities among common choices. Treasuries are backed by the U.S. government, while corporate and municipal bonds depend on the issuer’s creditworthiness and the terms of the issue.

Duration is a practical measure of sensitivity to interest-rate changes. Shorter-duration securities generally fluctuate less when rates move, while longer-duration bonds can experience larger price changes. If the money has a known spending date, align maturities and liquidity with that date instead of reaching for yield.

Control credit risk
Investment-grade and Treasury exposure usually carries less default risk than lower-quality debt, but no bond fund is risk-free. A high-yield fund can behave more like an equity during a downturn, exactly when it may be least helpful as a diversifier. Check the average credit rating, maturity, duration, concentration by issuer and whether the fund uses derivatives.
Understand the trade-offs
- Interest-rate risk: Bond prices can fall when market yields rise, especially for longer maturities.
- Inflation risk: Fixed payments may lose purchasing power if inflation remains high.
- Credit risk: Corporate and municipal issuers can deteriorate or default.
- Reinvestment risk: Short-term securities may mature when new yields are lower.
- Liquidity and tax considerations: Trading costs, account type and local tax rules affect the result.
Choose the bond exposure for the portfolio’s purpose—stability, income, a known liability or diversification—not simply because a recent yield looks attractive.
4. Consider real estate and commodities selectively
The SEC identifies real estate, precious metals and other commodities as additional asset categories. They may diversify equity risk, but they are optional sleeves rather than universal requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Real estate
Publicly traded real-estate securities can add property-sector exposure and may produce income, but their prices can move sharply with interest rates, credit conditions and property expectations. A broad real-estate fund can still be concentrated in a few property types or regions. Examine sector weights, leverage, liquidity, fees and whether the vehicle owns operating companies, property trusts or futures-based exposure.
Commodities and precious metals
Commodity prices respond to supply disruptions, inventories, weather, geopolitics and economic growth. They do not promise a coupon or dividend, and futures-based products can have roll costs and tracking differences. Precious metals can behave differently from industrial commodities, so “commodities” is not one uniform risk category. Keep any allocation sized for its intended role and understand the tax and account rules before trading.
5. Use a broad-market or target-date fund carefully
A broad-market fund can provide thousands of companies in one holding, while a target-date fund combines stock, bond and sometimes other funds and changes its mix over time. The SEC’s March 25, 2025 bulletin explains that target-date funds adjust their investment mix as the stated date approaches.

What to inspect before buying
- Holdings and overlap: Identify the largest companies and compare them with your existing funds.
- Glide path: See how the equity percentage changes before and after the target date. Two funds with the same date can take very different risks.
- Date assumptions: Determine whether the fund is designed to reach its most conservative allocation at the target date or to continue reducing risk afterward.
- Fees: Add the target-date fund’s expense ratio to the costs of its underlying funds where applicable.
- Equity percentage: A fund labeled “balanced” may still be heavily invested in stocks and can lose substantial value.
- Account coordination: Include outside holdings when assessing the household glide path; otherwise you can unintentionally own more equity or technology than intended.
Simplicity is valuable only when the fund’s design matches your goal. A one-fund solution is not automatically diversified if its underlying funds overlap or its glide path is inappropriate.
How to choose an allocation without a fake universal percentage
Official guidance makes allocation personal to goals, time horizon and risk tolerance, so there is no responsible single percentage that every investor should move out of technology. Use a decision sequence instead.
- Define the goal and date. Retirement decades away, a home purchase in three years and an emergency reserve require different liquidity and loss tolerances.
- Set a maximum tolerable loss. Consider both the account value decline you could withstand and the behavior you could maintain during a bear market. An allocation is unsuitable if you would sell it in panic.
- Choose the equity mix. Decide how much belongs in U.S. stocks, non-U.S. developed stocks, emerging markets, value and smaller companies after accounting for existing holdings.
- Add the stabilizing assets. Select Treasury, government, investment-grade corporate, municipal or money-market exposure according to duration, credit and tax needs.
- Add alternatives only for a defined purpose. State whether real estate or commodities are intended to diversify, hedge inflation, add income or express a view. If you cannot state the job, you may not need the sleeve.
- Write target ranges. A range gives you a rule for action without forcing a trade after every small market move.
For a long-horizon saver, the core may be a broad mix of U.S. and international equities with smaller-company or value exposure, while bonds provide the ballast appropriate to the investor’s risk capacity. For someone approaching a spending date, liquidity, shorter duration and preservation may matter more than adding another equity factor. These are frameworks, not personal recommendations.
Rebalancing: a risk-control process
Investor.gov describes rebalancing as restoring a portfolio to its target mix after market movements change the weights. Vanguard has likewise cautioned investors not to chase recent winners; its president and chief investment officer Greg Davis wrote on March 26, 2024 that the speed of market change was a reminder to resist performance chasing and maintain diversification.
Choose a method
- Calendar review: Check on a set schedule, such as annually or semiannually, and trade only when a holding is outside its target range.
- Threshold review: Act when an allocation drifts by a predetermined percentage or percentage point. This responds to risk changes rather than the date on the calendar.
- Cash-flow rebalancing: Direct new contributions, dividends and withdrawals toward underweight assets before selling anything.
Use the method consistently. Rebalancing is not a signal that the underperforming asset will rebound immediately; it is a way to keep the portfolio aligned with its intended risk. Consider commissions, bid-ask spreads, taxes and account restrictions before selling.
Costs, taxes and implementation details
Diversification can be expensive when implemented carelessly. Compare expense ratios, trading spreads, portfolio turnover, redemption fees where applicable and the tax consequences of selling appreciated positions. A fund with a slightly higher fee may offer useful exposure, while a cheap fund can be costly if it creates repeated taxable trades or has a poor fit.

Use tax-advantaged accounts according to their rules, and review whether interest, dividends and capital gains are taxed differently in your jurisdiction. Municipal bonds, foreign holdings and commodity structures can have specialized tax treatment. Read the current prospectus and account disclosures rather than relying on a fund label.
Liquidity is another cost. Small-cap, emerging-market, real-estate and commodity products can have wider spreads or larger price gaps in stressed markets. If you may need the money soon, avoid treating a volatile sleeve as cash.
Three practical implementation paths
Path A: Keep a simple core and add missing regions
Use a broad-market core, then add a non-U.S. fund if the core is overwhelmingly U.S.-weighted. Add a measured value or small-cap sleeve only after checking the core’s existing exposure. This path suits investors who want few holdings but are willing to monitor overlap.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPath B: Build a stock-and-bond policy
Set a written mix of U.S. equities, non-U.S. equities and high-quality bonds. Within equities, specify whether value or smaller companies are intentional tilts. Within bonds, specify duration and credit quality. Rebalance using cash flows and predetermined ranges.
Path C: Use a target-date or allocation fund as the central holding
Choose the fund only after comparing its glide path, equity percentage, fees and underlying holdings with your other accounts. Keep any additional positions small enough that they do not quietly override the fund’s intended allocation.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Replacing one narrow technology fund with several narrow technology funds. Correct it by examining look-through holdings and sector weights.
- Assuming “international” means every country equally. Check the developed/emerging split, country concentrations and currency policy.
- Using bonds without checking duration. Match maturity and interest-rate sensitivity to the spending horizon.
- Treating small-cap or value as a safe asset. They remain equities and can fall sharply; evaluate volatility, liquidity and profitability.
- Buying commodities after a price surge. Define the role first and understand that commodities may provide no income and can be highly volatile.
- Ignoring the household portfolio. A target-date fund in a workplace plan and a technology-heavy brokerage account should be assessed together.
- Rebalancing based on headlines. Follow the written ranges and schedule rather than trying to predict the next winning sector.
- Forgetting implementation costs. Include fees, spreads, taxes and the cost of frequent turnover in the decision.
A final decision checklist
- Have you calculated your combined exposure to U.S. mega-cap growth and technology?
- Do your proposed funds add a genuinely different country, sector, size, value, duration or credit exposure?
- Can you explain the purpose of every sleeve in one sentence?
- Does the allocation match when you will need the money and how much loss you can tolerate?
- Have you checked holdings, fees, glide paths, duration, credit quality, currency policy and liquidity?
- Are your target ranges and rebalancing triggers written down?
- Have you considered taxes and trading costs before selling appreciated positions?
The strongest diversification plan is not the one with the most funds. It is the one whose exposures are genuinely different, whose risks you understand and whose mix you can keep through the next market cycle.
