Re:

Best Tech of the Year: PCMag Editors Select the Top Products of 2025

PCMag’s 2025 Best Tech list names category winners across 18 technology areas. Here is what each pick is best for, its main drawback, and what to verify before buying in 2026.

Short answer: PCMag’s Best Tech of the Year is an editorial roundup of standout products, services, software, and games tested during the preceding year. It is not a single ranking from No. 1 to No. 110. The 2025 edition spans 18 technology categories and, according to an accessible reproduction of the roundup, names 110 winners selected from nearly 1,500 products and services tested since November 2024.

That makes the list useful as a map of strong 2025 products—but not as a substitute for checking today’s price, availability, successor models, subscription terms, security support, and regional compatibility. The buying advice below interprets PCMag’s selections for different users and flags where a 2025 award may no longer be a 2026 purchase recommendation.

Important date note: This is a 2025 awards retrospective with a 2026 buying check. The live PCMag roundup should take precedence if it differs from an earlier reproduction. PCMag’s page and manufacturer announcements have already produced at least one discrepancy: the accessible list names the Asustor AS6804T as the NAS winner, while ASUSTOR’s January 2026 announcement names the Lockerstor 4 Gen3.

How to use this guide: Treat the PCMag award as evidence that a product was a strong choice in its category at the time of testing. Then apply your own budget, ecosystem, privacy, repairability, and total-cost requirements. A five-star workstation is not automatically a better purchase for a student than a four-star laptop.

What PCMag’s 2025 Best Tech list actually is

PCMag promoted the roundup on November 19, 2025, as Best of the Year: Our Editors Select the Top Tech Products and Services for 2025. Its newsletter described 18 technology categories. An accessible reproduction of the article says the final list contained 110 products across those categories, drawn from nearly 1,500 products and services tested since November 2024. The same reproduction says every listed item earned at least four stars and that eight received PCMag’s five-star rating.

#1 Best Overall
Computer Speakers for Desktop PC Monitor, USB Plug-in, Wired, Computer Soundbar for PC, Laptop Speakers with Adaptive-Channel-Switching, Loud Sound, Deep Bass, USB C Adapter, Easy to Clip on Monitor
  • [COMPATIBLE WITH USB DEVICES] - Our USB Speakers are compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux, making them ideal for PC, laptop, and desktop computer. Incompatible Devices: Monitors TVs and Projector.
  • [COMPATIBLE WITH USB-C DEVICES] - Thanks to the built-in USB-C to USB Adapter, our USB-C speakers are now compatible with devices that only have USB-C interface, such as the latest MacBook, Mac mini, iMac, iPad, Android phones, and tablets.
  • [INCREDIBLE LOUD SOUND WITH RICH BASS] - Our small computer speaker is equipped with dual ultra-magnetic drivers and dual passive radiators, providing high-quality stereo sound with powerful volume and deep bass for an incredible audio experience.
  • [ADAPTIVE-CHANNEL-SWITCHING WITH G-SENSOR] - Ensures the left and right sound channels remain correctly positioned whether the speaker is clamped to the top or bottom of your monitor.
  • [CONVENIENT TOUCH CONTROL] - Three intuitive touch buttons on the front allow for easy muting and volume adjustment.

Those numbers should be attributed to the reproduced coverage rather than treated as an independently verified, permanently fixed count. Annual award pages can be edited after publication, and the live PCMag page may add, remove, or revise entries. The reproduction is also organized around many specialized subcategories—such as Ultraportable Laptop, Android Tablet, Network Attached Storage, Game Console, AI Chatbot, and VPN—rather than one uniform ranking.

In practical terms, this is a collection of category winners. A game, a cloud service, a laptop, and a router did not compete against one another on the same scorecard. Their relevant criteria differ: gameplay and platform availability matter for a game; privacy, pricing, and data retention matter for an AI service; thermals, ports, performance, and upgradeability matter for a PC.

How the awards were assembled

PCMag’s apparent funnel is straightforward:

  1. Editors review products and services using hands-on testing and laboratory measurements where appropriate.
  2. The editorial team narrows the field to products with strong review results and, often, Editors’ Choice recognition.
  3. The annual roundup selects standout products within numerous specialized categories.

The accessible reproduction describes PCMag’s ratings as 4.0 Excellent, 4.5 Outstanding, and 5.0 Exemplary. It also says only about one-quarter of the tested products earned Editors’ Choice, although that proportion is specific to the cited coverage and should not be generalized to every PCMag review or every year.

A four-star winner therefore is not necessarily a bad product or an inferior version of every five-star winner. It may be the best fit in a category where the products involve compromises, a lower price, or a narrower audience. A five-star professional laptop can still be wasteful for someone who mainly browses, writes, and streams video.

Fast answers: notable winners and the main financial caveat

The named winners and ratings above come primarily from the accessible reproduction of the roundup. Where a rating was not supplied in the recovered material, it is deliberately not guessed.

Rank #2
Amazon Basics Stereo 2.0 Speakers for PC or Laptop with Volume Control, 3.5mm Aux Input, USB-Powered, 1 Pair, Black
  • External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
  • USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
  • In-line volume control for easy access

Laptops

Laptop awards are especially easy to misread. An ultraportable, workstation, gaming laptop, and Chromebook serve different buyers. Compare weight, battery behavior, screen, ports, operating system, repair options, and the cost of memory or storage—not just the processor name.

PCMag category and winner Who should buy it Drawback, alternative, and 2026 check
Ultraportable Laptop: Apple MacBook Air 13-inch, 2025, M4
Rating: 4.0
People who value low weight, long battery life, quiet fanless operation, and the macOS ecosystem. Limited upgradeability and macOS-only software requirements can matter more than speed. Choose the MacBook Pro for sustained professional workloads, or a Windows ultraportable for software that does not run well on macOS. Confirm the exact configuration, memory, storage, warranty, and current generation before buying.
Desktop Replacement Laptop: Dell 16 Plus, DB16250
Rating: 4.0
Home users who want a large screen and strong value without maintaining a separate desktop. Large laptops are less convenient to carry and may cost more once upgraded. A smaller laptop plus an external monitor can be better for mixed home-and-travel use. Check whether the exact configuration is still sold and compare it with current large-screen models.
Apple Laptop: Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch, 2025, M5
Rating: 4.5
Professionals who need more sustained performance, a stronger display and more capable connectivity than a MacBook Air typically provides. Its price and performance are unnecessary for email, office work, and streaming. The MacBook Air is the more economical Apple choice for light workloads; a Windows workstation may be preferable for specialized applications. Check software compatibility, configuration pricing, and the support life of the exact model.
Budget Laptop: Asus Chromebook Plus CX34
Rating: 4.0
Students and households whose work is primarily browser-based, using web apps and Android-compatible tools. It is a poor fit if you require desktop Adobe applications, specialist Windows programs, or demanding local software. A budget Windows laptop is the alternative when offline or legacy applications matter. Verify the ChromeOS update schedule, current price, storage, and school or workplace app compatibility.
Chromebook: Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus
Rating: 4.5
Users who want ChromeOS simplicity but place more value on a premium display and design. The premium Chromebook price can weaken its value if your needs are basic, and ChromeOS remains the platform constraint. The Asus Chromebook Plus is a value-oriented alternative. Confirm update support, app compatibility, and whether the display premium is worthwhile for your work.
Gaming Laptop: Razer Blade 14, 2025
Rating: 4.5
Gamers who want high-end performance in a relatively compact laptop. Compact gaming hardware involves trade-offs in price, heat, noise, battery life, and upgradeability. A larger gaming laptop or desktop usually provides more performance per dollar. Check the GPU, screen, memory, storage, power adapter, warranty, and current model-year status rather than relying on the 2025 label.
Business Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition
Rating: 5.0
Traveling professionals who value low weight, keyboard quality, business features, and a strong overall work experience. The premium business price is hard to justify for casual use, gaming, or heavy graphics work. A less expensive ThinkPad or mainstream business laptop may leave more money for a dock and monitor. Check the company’s warranty, repair channels, port selection, and exact corporate configuration.
Workstation Laptop: HP ZBook Power 16 G11 A
Rating: 4.0
Professionals who need certified or workstation-oriented software capability at a lower entry cost than the most premium mobile workstations. It is overkill for general office work and may be less portable than a conventional laptop. A creator laptop or desktop can be better for non-certified workloads. Confirm the required graphics, memory, ISV certifications, support plan, and replacement cost.
Content Creation Laptop: Asus ProArt PX13, HN7306
Rating: 4.5
Creators who want a convertible form factor with enough capability for photo, video, or design work. Convertible design, performance hardware, and accessories can make it expensive. A MacBook Pro or conventional creator laptop may offer better value for a fixed workflow. Check color coverage, memory, storage, ports, pen accessories, thermal behavior, and current stock.
2-in-1 Laptop: LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 16
Rating: 4.0
Users who want a large, light convertible with an OLED display for notes, media, and general productivity. A large 2-in-1 is not as comfortable as a tablet for extended handheld use and may not replace a true workstation. A conventional laptop plus tablet can be a better value. Confirm included accessories, hinge warranty, OLED coverage, and the current model number.

Phones and tablets

Winner Best use Important limitation and alternative
Apple Tablet: Apple iPad, 2025
Rating: 4.0
A general-purpose Apple tablet for browsing, media, school, and light productivity. Accessories such as a keyboard or stylus can materially increase the cost, and an iPad is not automatically a laptop replacement. Choose the Samsung tablet for a large Android display or a laptop for desktop software. Check storage, accessory compatibility, cellular pricing, and the exact generation.
Android Tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra
Rating: 4.0
Android users who want a very large screen and a premium tablet experience for media, multitasking, and stylus-based work. Its size and price make it a poor casual-tablet choice. The standard iPad may offer a simpler or more economical ecosystem for Apple households; a smaller Android tablet is better for portability. Include the keyboard, pen, case, storage, and software-update terms in the budget.
iOS Phone: Apple iPhone 17
Rating: 4.5
Buyers who want the mainstream iPhone experience without necessarily paying for the most expensive Pro model. It is not the specialist choice for maximum camera hardware, screen size, or professional features. Consider a Pro iPhone if those capabilities justify the cost, or the Pixel 9a for a lower-cost Android camera-focused option. Compare trade-in value, storage, carrier financing, and repair coverage—not just the monthly payment.
Android Phone: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
Rating: 4.5
Android power users who want a broad feature set, large display, flagship performance, and stylus support. It is physically large and expensive, and many users will not use its advanced features. The Pixel 9a is the value-oriented alternative; the iPhone 17 is the relevant option for buyers committed to Apple. Verify current software support, storage pricing, carrier model, and accessory costs.
Value Android Phone: Google Pixel 9a
Rating: verify on the live PCMag page
Budget-conscious buyers who prioritize camera results and software features over premium materials and maximum performance. It may not satisfy buyers seeking flagship performance, luxury hardware, or the largest display. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the feature-rich alternative, while the Galaxy A16 5G is aimed at a much lower budget. Check current stock, update policy, storage, warranty, and the regional model.
Budget Android Phone: Samsung Galaxy A16 5G
Rating: verify on the live PCMag page
Buyers spending under roughly $200 at the time of the original review who need basic smartphone service and 5G connectivity. Do not expect flagship camera, gaming, or display performance. Move up to the Pixel 9a if photography and longer-term responsiveness matter more than the lowest price. Check whether the advertised price requires a carrier promotion and confirm update support, unlocked status, and storage.

Wearables and fitness

Winner Best for Watch-outs before purchase
Apple Smartwatch: Apple Watch Series 11 iPhone owners who want notifications, activity tracking, and Apple ecosystem integration. It is a poor fit for Android users and can create recurring costs for cellular service, bands, chargers, and eventual battery replacement. Check iPhone compatibility, health-feature availability by country, cellular plan terms, and update support.
Android Smartwatch: Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 Android users, particularly those already using Samsung services, who want a full smartwatch rather than a simple tracker. Compatibility and health features can vary by phone and region. A fitness tracker costs less if notifications and basic activity data are enough; an Apple Watch is the natural comparison for iPhone owners. Budget for LTE, bands, insurance, and battery replacement if applicable.
Smart Glasses: XReal One Pro Early adopters who want a wearable display and have a compatible phone, computer, or gaming device. These are not a universal replacement for a monitor or ordinary glasses. Check device compatibility, adapters, prescription options, comfort, return policy, and whether the display solves a real problem before paying a premium.
Fitness Tracker: Samsung Galaxy Fit3 People who want basic fitness and activity tracking without paying smartwatch prices. It is not the right choice for users who need the broader app, communication, or navigation features of a smartwatch. Compare it with the phone or smartwatch already in your ecosystem and verify health features, battery condition, and current support.
AI Home Gym / Strength Training: Tonal 2 Users who want guided strength training at home and can dedicate space and a substantial equipment budget. Equipment, installation, membership, and service costs can make total ownership far more expensive than free weights or a conventional gym. Confirm subscription requirements, installation in your home, cancellation terms, replacement parts, and whether the coaching features remain useful without paid access.

Smart-home and security products

Smart-home awards should be evaluated as systems, not isolated gadgets. A camera may be inexpensive but expensive over several years if useful recording requires a subscription. A lock or thermostat may be excellent but inconvenient if it does not work with your existing hub, voice assistant, wireless network, or household phones.

Winner Best for Cost, privacy, compatibility, and 2026 checks
Security System: SimpliSafe Home Security System Households wanting relatively straightforward DIY security with the option to operate without a monthly monitoring fee. Compare equipment cost with monitoring tiers and professional-response terms. Buyers who require completely local control or deep smart-home automation may prefer a different system. Check cellular backup, contract and cancellation rules, emergency response, app support, and current plan inclusions.
Indoor Security Camera: Arlo Essential Pan Tilt Indoor, 2025 Users who want a recognizable cloud-connected indoor camera with pan-and-tilt coverage. Recorded video and advanced capabilities generally require an Arlo subscription, so calculate a multi-year cost. Buyers prioritizing local storage and fewer cloud dependencies should compare a local-storage camera or hub. Check the current subscription, storage policy, account requirements, firmware support, and privacy settings.
Smart-Home Camera Hub: Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro Households already using, or willing to build around, Aqara’s hub-based smart-home ecosystem. Hub compatibility and standards support matter more than the camera specification alone. It may be a poor fit for a household that wants a single simple app or a different ecosystem. Confirm Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple integration for your region and desired devices.
Smart Lock: Eufy FamiLock S3 Max Homeowners seeking a connected lock with modern access features. Confirm door thickness, lock style, battery backup, physical-key fallback, guest access, and whether remote features require an account or subscription. Renters and incompatible doors should avoid buying before checking installation and landlord permissions.
Video Doorbell: TP-Link Tapo D225 Users seeking a connected doorbell within the Tapo ecosystem. Check wired versus battery installation, local storage, cloud plans, chime requirements, Wi-Fi coverage, and integration with your existing smart-home platform. A doorbell that fits the door but lacks the desired recording model is not a bargain.
Smart Lighting: Lorex 2K Wi-Fi Smart Lightbulb Camera People who want lighting and a camera combined in one installation point. The combination is convenient but creates compromises: the light socket and camera view must both be suitable, and a camera in a light fixture may not fit every privacy preference. Compare it with a separate light and camera, then verify storage, subscription, app support, and replacement availability.
Smart Ceiling Fan: Dreo CLF712S Users who want app or voice control of a ceiling fan and are comfortable with installation requirements. Check ceiling-box compatibility, installation labor, remote-control fallback, room size, and ecosystem support. A non-smart fan can be cheaper and easier to repair if remote access is not important.
Smart Air Purifier: Dyson Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 Buyers who value a combined purifier, heater, and fan with formaldehyde-focused monitoring. Dyson products command a premium, and filter replacement is an ongoing cost. It may be poor value if you only need a basic purifier or already have heating and cooling. Price replacement filters, confirm room sizing, and check the app and warranty terms.
Robot Vacuum: Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni Households willing to pay for a premium automated vacuum-and-mop system. Dock space, consumables, app dependence, mapping, and replacement parts affect ownership cost. A conventional vacuum or lower-priced robot is better for smaller homes or buyers who do not need hands-off cleaning. Verify current firmware, privacy settings, accessory availability, and subscription requirements if any.
Budget Robot Vacuum: TP-Link Tapo RV30 Max Plus Buyers seeking automated floor cleaning with a lower initial cost than a premium flagship. Check what navigation, obstacle avoidance, mopping, dock maintenance, and local control are included rather than assuming flagship behavior. Compare consumable prices and app support, and verify whether the current model remains available.
Smart Air Conditioner: GE 11,000 BTU Smart Heat/Cool With Heat Pump, AWGP12 Rooms needing a relatively high-capacity smart heating and cooling appliance where the installation and electrical setup are suitable. Correct sizing, window compatibility, noise, energy use, and installation are more important than the app. Compare seasonal operating cost with a conventional unit and confirm that the heat-pump function suits your climate and local electrical requirements.
Robot Lawn Mower: Segway Navimow X390 Owners of large lawns who want to reduce routine mowing. Upfront cost, boundary or positioning setup, weather exposure, theft protection, blades, and service availability all matter. It is irrational for a small lawn or a household that cannot maintain the installation. Verify property size, terrain limits, regional availability, and replacement-part support.
Robotic Pool Cleaner: Dreame Z1 Pro Pool owners who want automated cleaning rather than manual vacuuming. Confirm pool shape, surface, water conditions, charging, filters, and service coverage. A robotic cleaner is a specialized purchase with maintenance costs; compare those with a manual or conventional cleaner before committing.

TVs and home entertainment

Winner Best for Main trade-off and 2026 check
TV: LG Evo C5 65-inch OLED Viewers who prioritize OLED contrast, fast response, and premium movie or gaming performance. OLED is not automatically best for every bright room, and buyers should consider burn-in risk, brightness, price, warranty, and viewing habits. Compare current OLED generations and discounted prior models rather than assuming the 2025 model is still the best value.
Budget TV: Hisense 65U65QF Buyers seeking a large screen at a lower price than a premium OLED. Expect trade-offs in contrast behavior, processing, viewing angles, build, or smart-platform features depending on the exact model. The original coverage’s discount observation is dated and should not be used as a current price. Check present pricing, firmware, return policy, and streaming-app support.
Media Hub: onn 4K Pro 32GB Google TV Streaming Device Households wanting an inexpensive Google TV streaming hub with more storage than basic devices. Verify current app support, advertising behavior, remote features, performance, and update policy. A more expensive streaming device may be worthwhile for demanding users, while a TV’s built-in platform may be enough for casual viewing.
Projector: Hisense C2 Ultra Viewers who want a flexible, very large projected image and can control room lighting and placement. A projector requires suitable distance, a usable wall or screen, and tolerance for ambient-light compromises. A TV is usually simpler for daytime viewing. Budget for a screen, sound, mounting, and warranty, and verify current streaming support.
Portable Bluetooth Speaker: Marshall Middleton II Listeners who want a portable speaker with strong sound and distinctive design. Compare weight, battery replacement, weather protection, codec support, and current street price with less expensive speakers. The best fit depends on portability and listening environment, not only brand or loudness.
Smart Speaker: Amazon Echo Dot Max Alexa households that want voice control, smart-home integration, and a compact speaker. Cloud dependence, account requirements, privacy settings, and Amazon’s changing service features are part of the ownership model. A conventional Bluetooth speaker is better for buyers who do not want an always-connected assistant.

Cameras and drones

Winner Best for Important qualification
Full-Frame Camera: Nikon Z5II Photographers who want a full-frame interchangeable-lens system and are prepared to invest in lenses. The body is only the beginning of the cost. Compare lens availability, autofocus, stabilization, video needs, batteries, cards, and the size of the system. A crop-sensor camera is often a better value for travel or wildlife, while a phone may be enough for casual photography.
Crop-Sensor Camera: Nikon Z50II Travelers and enthusiasts who want a smaller interchangeable-lens camera and a more accessible system cost. It may give up some low-light or depth-of-field advantages compared with full frame. The Z5II is the alternative if full-frame output matters more than size and price. Check the lens ecosystem and the exact video and autofocus requirements of your work.
360-Degree Action Camera: Insta360 X5 Creators who want reframing flexibility and immersive 360-degree footage. Editing, stitching, storage, batteries, mounts, and lens protection add cost and complexity. A conventional action camera is simpler if you do not need a 360-degree workflow. Verify current app support, replacement lens availability, and accessory pricing.
Camera Drone: DJI Flip Users who want a compact aerial camera for travel and creative footage. Flight rules depend on the operation, location, aircraft marking, and applicable regulations; do not assume a weight threshold alone eliminates registration or other obligations. Check current FAA and local rules before flying, as well as geofencing, insurance, battery cost, repair support, and any current policy developments.

Desktops and PC components

PC hardware should be purchased as a system. The cost of a graphics card is not the cost of a working gaming PC; a fast SSD may need a heatsink; and a Wi-Fi 7 router helps only when clients, wired backhaul, broadband, and home layout can use its capabilities.

Winner Best for What to check before spending
Mainstream Desktop: Lenovo Yoga AIO, 27-inch Households wanting a clean all-in-one desktop for general work and entertainment. An all-in-one saves space but usually limits upgrades and makes a failed display or computer harder to replace separately. A small desktop with an independent monitor is more flexible. Check memory, storage, ports, webcam, warranty, and whether the exact generation is still sold.
Budget Desktop: GEEKOM A6 Mini PC Value-oriented users who already have, or can buy, a monitor and peripherals. Mini PCs can be efficient and compact but less upgradeable than towers. Confirm memory and storage expansion, cooling, power adapter, operating-system licensing, and the cost of adding peripherals. A laptop may be better if portability matters.
Compact Desktop: Falcon Northwest FragBox, 2025 Enthusiasts who want boutique-builder support and high performance in a compact gaming desktop. Compact systems can command a premium and leave less room for future upgrades. Compare total configuration price, component access, cooling, shipping damage policy, and warranty with a larger self-built or mainstream desktop.
All-in-One Desktop: HP OmniStudio X 31.5 AIO Users who want a large, integrated desktop display with minimal cable clutter. The large panel and integrated design can be expensive to repair or replace. A separate monitor and desktop is the better long-term ownership choice for upgraders. Check included ports, webcam features, memory, storage, and warranty.
Gaming Desktop: Velocity Micro Raptor Z55a Gamers who want a powerful prebuilt system and boutique-builder service rather than assembling a PC. Compare the full configuration, graphics memory, power supply, cooling, upgrade access, shipping, and support—not just the headline CPU or GPU. A self-built PC or a less expensive system may provide more value if you are comfortable troubleshooting.
Business Desktop: Lenovo ThinkCentre M90a Gen 5 Organizations wanting an all-in-one business PC with centralized purchasing and support considerations. It is not a gaming or enthusiast-upgrade platform. Compare business warranty, manageability, security features, service-level options, and lifecycle availability. A standard desktop may be easier to repair in a small office.
Desktop Workstation: Apple Mac Studio, 2025, M4 Max Mac-based professionals who need substantial local performance in a compact desktop. It is expensive, tied to macOS, and generally less flexible than a tower for internal component upgrades. Choose a Windows workstation if your software or GPU workflow requires it, or a Mac mini-class system for lighter work. Budget for external storage, display, peripherals, and AppleCare or other service coverage if desired.
High-End Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 Founders Edition Enthusiasts and creators whose workloads justify high-end graphics performance. Check the complete system budget, power supply, case clearance, cooling, monitor resolution, and software support. A lower-tier card can be the better financial choice at a particular price, while a professional workload may require different drivers or memory capacity.
Mainstream Graphics Card: PNY GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB Overclocked Dual Fan Mainstream gamers and creators who want more graphics memory without paying for the highest tier. Do not buy on memory alone: compare current pricing, actual game resolution, power draw, cooling, and the rest of the system. Check whether the card fits the case and whether the warranty is transferable.
High-End Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Enthusiasts who need top-tier gaming and multi-core performance and can build around the appropriate platform. The chip requires a compatible motherboard, memory, cooler, and power budget. For ordinary office work, a cheaper processor is the rational choice. Compare the whole platform cost and cooling requirements, not only benchmark leadership.
Motherboard: ASRock Z890 Taichi High-end builders who need a feature-rich motherboard for a compatible processor and expansion plan. Premium boards can offer features many buyers never use. Confirm socket, BIOS support, memory compatibility, storage lanes, expansion layout, networking, warranty, and whether the board’s price would be better spent on a faster GPU or larger SSD.
PC Case: Corsair Air 5400 RS-R Builders who prioritize airflow, layout, and a specific component presentation. Case quality is inseparable from GPU clearance, radiator support, noise, dust filtration, and desk space. Check dimensions and included fans before buying; a cheaper case may provide equivalent performance for a conventional build.
SSD: WD Black SN8100 Users with workloads that can benefit from very high storage throughput, such as large media or professional file operations. PCIe 5 SSDs can run hot and may need a suitable heatsink, while ordinary applications may see limited real-world gains over a less expensive drive. Confirm motherboard support, thermal clearance, endurance, warranty, and backup strategy.
Router: TP-Link Archer GE650 BE11000 Wi-Fi 7 Gaming Router Gamers and households with compatible Wi-Fi 7 clients, fast broadband, and a layout that can use a high-end single router. Theoretical wireless speed does not guarantee better coverage or lower latency. Check client compatibility, wired ports, firmware and security-support policy, placement, and whether a mesh system is more appropriate. Do not pay for Wi-Fi 7 if current devices cannot use it.
Mesh Wi-Fi System: Eero Pro 7 Households that value simple setup and managed whole-home coverage. Cloud accounts, app dependence, subscription features, wired backhaul, and privacy preferences should be part of the decision. A traditional router or locally managed mesh system may suit advanced users better. Check current plan inclusions and support life.
External SSD: Crucial X10 People who need fast portable storage for backups, media libraries, or moving large files. Performance depends on the computer, cable, port, and sustained workload. Treat it as one backup copy rather than the only copy, and check hardware encryption, password protection, ruggedness, warranty, and current capacity pricing.

Storage, printing, displays, and peripherals

Winner Best for Drawback and ownership check
Network Attached Storage: Asustor AS6804T in the accessible reproduction; Lockerstor 4 Gen3 in ASUSTOR’s January 2026 announcement Households and small offices that want centralized local files, backups, media, or home-server functions. This is the list’s clearest unresolved award conflict. Confirm the exact model on the current PCMag page before citing or buying. Budget separately for hard drives, backups, network upgrades, power, and administration; a NAS is not a backup if it is the only copy. Compare cloud storage if simplicity matters more than local control.
Photo Printer: Epson Expression Photo XP-8800 Photographers who want home photo printing and accept the ongoing cost of ink and paper. Ink is the major recurring expense, and a photo printer is often poor value for occasional prints. Compare lab printing, ink-tank models, cartridge prices, color management, paper cost, and warranty before buying.
3D Printer: Bambu Lab P2S Makers who want a modern 3D-printing workflow and are prepared to manage materials, calibration, ventilation, and maintenance. Material, nozzle, plate, replacement-part, and software costs continue after purchase. Confirm supported materials, enclosure and ventilation needs, network privacy settings, slicer compatibility, and service availability.
Scanner: Ricoh ScanSnap iX2500 Households and small offices that need a dedicated document-scanning workflow. It is designed for documents, not necessarily high-end photo archiving. PFU America independently described it as the only document scanner on PCMag’s 2025 list. Check feed capacity, OCR software, macOS and Windows support, consumables, and current availability.
Mouse: Logitech MX Master 4 Office and creative users who value an ergonomic productivity mouse and multi-device control. Its shape may not suit every hand, and gaming users should compare gaming sensors and latency. Check operating-system support, Bluetooth and receiver options, battery replacement, warranty, and whether its productivity features justify the price.
Keyboard: Satechi SM3 Slim Mechanical Backlit Bluetooth Keyboard Users seeking a slim mechanical Bluetooth keyboard for a desk or travel setup. Keyboard feel, layout, keycap availability, battery, and operating-system shortcuts are personal considerations. Compare it with a less expensive membrane or full-height mechanical board and verify regional layout before ordering.
Conferencing Monitor: HP Ultrawide Series 7 Pro 34-inch WQHD Conferencing Monitor, 734pm Remote workers and professionals who value a large ultrawide workspace with integrated conferencing features. It is a very different proposition from a high-refresh gaming monitor. Check webcam quality, microphone, speakers, USB-C power delivery, docking behavior, desk depth, and warranty. A normal monitor plus separate camera may be cheaper and more flexible.
Gaming Monitor: Asus ROG Swift PG27UCDM Enthusiast gamers who can use a 4K OLED panel, 240Hz refresh rate, and DisplayPort 2.1 capability. The display is aimed at a powerful PC and carries OLED considerations such as burn-in management and price. A lower-resolution or lower-refresh display is a better value for many systems. Confirm GPU output, cable requirements, warranty coverage, and current model-year pricing.
Gaming Headset: Razer BlackShark V3 Pro Gamers who want a premium headset experience and wireless or platform-specific features. Check console, PC, mobile, wireless, microphone, battery, and software compatibility before buying. A wired headset can deliver better value and fewer charging problems; include replacement pads and warranty in the ownership calculation.
Gaming Chair: AndaSeat Novis Gamers and desk workers whose body size and posture fit the chair’s adjustment range. No chair is universally ergonomic. Check seat depth, lumbar adjustment, armrests, return shipping, warranty, and fit rather than buying based on appearance. A conventional office chair may be the better long-term value.

Gaming

PCMag’s gaming selections include hardware and software, but those are different purchase decisions. A console, a Windows handheld, and a game do not substitute for one another. Consider existing libraries, physical versus digital ownership, platform subscriptions, battery life, portability, controls, and the cost of the platform itself.

Category and winner Best for Why someone else may choose differently
Game Console: Nintendo Switch 2 Players who want Nintendo’s platform, console simplicity, and flexible play styles. It is not the same proposition as a PC handheld or a PlayStation or Xbox ecosystem. Check game availability, storage expansion, accessories, online-service cost, and current hardware stock before buying.
PC Gaming Handheld: Asus ROG Xbox Ally X Players who want portable PC gaming and access to a broader PC-oriented library. Windows overhead, setup, battery limits, heat, controls, storage, and game-launcher complexity can be frustrating. A console is easier to use, while a laptop is more capable for a fixed desk. Confirm the exact operating-system experience, dock, charger, warranty, and current software support.
Microsoft/Xbox Game: South of Midnight Players interested in a narrative Xbox-platform game and its particular art direction and genre. A game award is inherently preference-sensitive. Confirm platform availability, playtime, subscription access, edition differences, reviews after updates, and whether buying outright is better than accessing it through a subscription.
PlayStation 5 Game: Silent Hill f PlayStation 5 owners seeking a horror title associated with the Silent Hill series. It is a platform-specific and genre-specific purchase, not a general recommendation. Check content warnings, edition pricing, physical availability, performance updates, and whether it is included in any current game catalog.
PC Game: Doom: The Dark Ages PC players who want a major action game and have hardware capable of running it well. Check minimum and recommended specifications, graphics settings, storage, platform DRM, controller support, and current price. A console version or a discounted older game may offer better value for casual players.

Software and online services

Software awards age faster than hardware awards. Pricing tiers, AI features, usage limits, privacy policies, supported operating systems, catalogs, and update policies can change without a new physical product name. Compare the annual cost, renewal price, cancellation terms, and whether your files or workflow become difficult to move later.

Category and selection Best for Subscription, privacy, and 2026 buying note
Desktop Operating System: Apple macOS Tahoe Apple users whose hardware supports the release and whose applications work within macOS. An operating-system award is not a reason to replace a computer by itself. Check hardware eligibility, application compatibility, peripheral drivers, security-update support, and whether a required Windows or Linux workflow has a reliable alternative.
Mobile Operating System: Apple iOS 26 iPhone owners who value Apple’s integrated mobile ecosystem and update model. Feature availability can vary by device and region. Check whether the reader’s iPhone supports the relevant features, what data is processed in the cloud, and whether app permissions or default-service changes affect privacy and cost.
AI Chatbot: ChatGPT Users seeking a general-purpose tool for drafting, brainstorming, explanation, coding assistance, and other AI-supported tasks. Do not treat an award as proof of universal accuracy or privacy. Compare the specific model, free and paid plan, usage limits, tool access, training and retention settings, and the sensitivity of information you plan to submit. The reproduced coverage also notes that Ziff Davis, PCMag’s parent company, filed a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025. That context does not by itself invalidate the selection, but readers should know it when assessing the recommendation.
Graphic Design Software: Canva Individuals and small teams that want approachable browser-based design and templates. Free and paid features, asset licensing, brand controls, storage, and AI limits vary by plan. Compare export requirements, ownership and portability of designs, team-seat pricing, and whether a professional designer needs more granular control.
Photo Editing Software: Adobe Photoshop Photographers, designers, and professionals who need a deep editing tool and an established workflow. Subscription cost, renewal terms, cloud features, plug-ins, local file handling, and hardware needs are central. A one-time or lower-cost editor may be sufficient for occasional users; check current plan contents rather than relying on the 2025 feature set.
Video Editing Software: Adobe Premiere Pro Editors and production teams who need a professional video workflow and broad compatibility. It is a recurring subscription with potentially significant hardware and storage requirements. Compare the current plan, collaboration features, media-management workflow, export needs, and alternatives if you edit only occasionally.
Web Hosting: DreamHost Website owners who want hosted infrastructure and a conventional hosting provider. Introductory pricing can differ from renewal pricing, and domains, backups, email, migration, and support may cost extra or vary by plan. Check uptime commitments, cancellation, data export, security tools, and the full multi-year cost.
Website Builder: Wix Small businesses and individuals who prioritize a visual, managed website-building workflow. Convenience can come with ongoing plan costs and platform lock-in. Check bandwidth, storage, payments, domain renewal, advertising removal, export limitations, accessibility, SEO tools, and the cost after any introductory period.
CRM: Bigin by Zoho CRM Small businesses that need a lighter customer-relationship workflow than a large enterprise CRM. Compare user-seat pricing, automation, integrations, data export, storage, support, and upgrade paths. A low starting price can become expensive as the team grows or requires advanced features.
Productivity App: Asana Individuals and teams organizing tasks, projects, and collaboration. Free-tier limits, paid seats, guest access, integrations, and export options affect the real cost. Avoid paying for features your team will not adopt, and assess whether the workflow remains usable if the subscription is downgraded.
Project Management App: Zoho Projects Teams wanting structured project management within or alongside the Zoho ecosystem. Check plan limits, automation, reporting, integrations, permissions, storage, and migration. Compare total seat costs with Asana and with tools already included in your existing business software.
Video Conferencing App: Webex by Cisco Organizations that need a business-oriented conferencing service and administrative controls. Compare meeting duration, participant limits, recording, transcription, phone integration, security controls, and support by plan. The best choice depends on what your customers and employees already use.
VoIP: Zoom Phone Businesses seeking cloud-based business calling integrated with a broader communications platform. Calculate licenses, calling plans, numbers, porting, hardware, recording, international use, taxes, and emergency-calling requirements. Internet outages and local regulatory requirements mean it should not be evaluated like an ordinary messaging app.
Video Streaming, On Demand: Netflix Households that value a large on-demand catalog and are willing to pay a recurring subscription. Catalogs and pricing are regional and change frequently; plan tiers may include advertising, limits, or different quality. Compare the annual cost with the services you actually watch and cancel or rotate subscriptions when appropriate.
Security Suite: Norton 360 Deluxe Users who want a bundled consumer security suite rather than assembling separate tools. Renewal pricing, included device count, VPN and backup limits, browser features, and notifications matter. Avoid paying for overlapping features, and compare the suite with the security protections already included in your operating system and accounts.
Antivirus: Bitdefender Antivirus Plus Users seeking a dedicated antivirus product and its additional security controls. Attribute the recommendation to PCMag’s editorial judgment, not a guarantee of complete protection. Check current independent testing, supported operating systems, renewal cost, device limits, performance impact, and whether the free or built-in security tools meet your needs.
VPN: Proton VPN Privacy-conscious users who want to encrypt traffic against some local-network observers and reduce exposure on untrusted networks. A VPN does not make you anonymous, stop phishing or malware, prevent all tracking, or guarantee that no logs exist. Review the current plan, jurisdiction and privacy policy, speed, server availability, device limits, kill-switch behavior, and renewal price. Treat this as an editorial recommendation, not a promise of complete privacy.

Best picks by reader profile

These are practical interpretations of the category winners, not additional PCMag rankings:

  • Best Mac for most people: MacBook Air M4, provided the buyer’s software runs on macOS and the configuration has enough memory and storage.
  • Best Mac for sustained professional work: MacBook Pro M5, if its extra performance, display, and connectivity justify the premium.
  • Best business travel laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition, with the warning that its five-star rating does not make it the best-value laptop.
  • Best budget student computer: Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 when schoolwork is browser-based; otherwise compare a Windows laptop.
  • Best mainstream iPhone choice: iPhone 17 for buyers who want Apple’s ecosystem without automatically moving to the most expensive tier.
  • Best feature-rich Android phone: Galaxy S25 Ultra for buyers who will use its size, cameras, performance, and stylus.
  • Best value-oriented phone: Pixel 9a when camera and software value matter more than premium materials; Galaxy A16 5G is the lower-budget option.
  • Best local-storage direction: the confirmed Asustor awardee, once the AS6804T versus Lockerstor 4 Gen3 discrepancy is resolved, for buyers prepared to manage drives and backups.
  • Best premium TV direction: LG Evo C5 OLED for contrast and response, provided the room, budget, and burn-in considerations are suitable.
  • Best PC enthusiast direction: an RTX 5080-based system or Ryzen 9 9950X3D platform only when the complete build, power, cooling, and monitor budget supports it.
  • Best simple gaming direction: Nintendo Switch 2 for console convenience; choose the ROG Xbox Ally X only if portable PC gaming and its Windows trade-offs are worthwhile.
  • Best privacy-oriented software direction: Proton VPN for a limited privacy use case, with the understanding that VPN protection is narrower than anonymity or comprehensive security.

How to recheck a 2025 winner before buying in 2026

  1. Open the live PCMag entry. Confirm that the exact model and category are still listed. Annual pages can be revised.
  2. Match the exact SKU and region. U.S. and international versions can have different keyboards, radios, warranties, power standards, storage, cameras, and software.
  3. Look for a successor. A 2025 award can apply to a product that has since been replaced, discounted, or reduced to refurbished stock. Do not assume the award year is the release year.
  4. Calculate total ownership cost. Add accessories, storage, controllers, lenses, printer ink, filters, replacement parts, installation, cloud storage, monitoring, software, AI, VPN, and gaming subscriptions.
  5. Check update and support policies. This is critical for phones, routers, cameras, smart-home products, operating systems, AI services, and security software.
  6. Test ecosystem fit. Confirm compatibility with your phone, computer, operating system, smart-home hub, Wi-Fi standard, monitor, game library, and existing accounts.
  7. Review privacy and account requirements. Determine whether the product works locally, requires cloud access, records data, uses telemetry, or loses major functions without a subscription.
  8. Check repair and return terms. Battery replacement, parts availability, warranty exclusions, shipping, installation, and return fees can outweigh a small discount.
  9. Use current independent testing for high-risk purchases. For security software, VPNs, cameras, drones, displays, batteries, and networking equipment, later firmware and policy changes can materially alter the original review.

What changed—and what remains uncertain

The NAS award has conflicting descriptions

The accessible December 2025 reproduction lists Asustor AS6804T under Network Attached Storage. ASUSTOR’s January 20, 2026 announcement says its Lockerstor 4 Gen3 was named one of PCMag’s Best Tech Products of 2025 and calls it the only NAS to receive the honor. The most reasonable explanations are a later update to PCMag’s page, a revision between versions of the roundup, or a difference in how the manufacturer described the award. Until the live PCMag page resolves it, neither NAS should be presented as the unquestioned current winner.

Prices and discounts are not permanent

The original roundup’s observations about discounts, including the statement that a television could regularly be found at a large discount, describe the market at the time of publication. They are not current price quotes. Hardware prices, retailer inventory, tariffs, promotions, and refurbished availability can all change. Look at the total price on the day of purchase and compare the current model with its predecessor.

Software and subscription terms are especially volatile

Netflix plans, Adobe features, AI model access, VPN limits, security-suite renewals, cloud-camera recording, website-builder tiers, and productivity-app seat pricing can change without a new product name. A 2025 award says what PCMag selected at that time; it does not lock in a 2025 feature set or price.

Model names do not guarantee identical products

Retailers may sell different memory, storage, processor, display, keyboard, wireless, or carrier configurations under a family name. A laptop award may apply to one configuration rather than every version. The same warning applies to TVs, graphics cards, routers, SSDs, phones, and cameras.

What the list does not tell you

PCMag’s awards emphasize editorial testing and category leadership. They do not automatically identify the cheapest option, the easiest product to repair, the longest-lasting battery, the best warranty, the most private cloud policy, or the lowest long-term operating cost. They also do not mean that every winner is available in every country.

For personal-finance purposes, the most important omissions to fill are often recurring costs and switching costs. A printer can be inexpensive but consume costly ink. A security camera can be affordable but require several years of cloud storage. A high-speed router can be wasted if your devices and broadband cannot use it. An AI, VPN, design, streaming, or productivity service can become a permanent monthly charge. A NAS can reduce cloud bills but requires drives, backups, electricity, and administration.

The awards also do not automatically address repairability or sustainability. Before buying expensive electronics, look for battery-replacement options, parts availability, repair documentation, update duration, energy consumption where material, and the manufacturer’s support history.

Sources and methodology notes

The primary reference is PCMag’s Best Tech Products roundup. The list counts, testing-period description, ratings explanation, product inventory, and individual winner descriptions are cross-checked against the accessible reproduction. PCMag’s November 2025 promotion and its reference to 18 categories appear in the archived newsletter. General PCMag testing context is also described in this PCMag methodology coverage.

PFU America separately identified the Ricoh ScanSnap iX2500 as the only document scanner on the 2025 list in its company announcement. The competing NAS description appears in ASUSTOR’s January 2026 announcement. Those manufacturer statements support the specific award context but do not replace the live PCMag page for determining the current canonical list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PCMag’s Best Tech of 2025 one overall ranking?

No. It is a collection of winners across specialized categories and subcategories. A laptop, game, router, and online service were not ranked against one another on a single overall scale.

How many products were on PCMag’s 2025 list?

An accessible reproduction says 110 products across 18 technology categories, selected from nearly 1,500 products and services tested since November 2024. Because annual pages can be edited, confirm the current count and entries on PCMag’s live roundup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a four-star winner mean it is worse than every five-star winner?

No. PCMag’s ratings describe the reviewed product, while the award categories serve different users. A four-star budget laptop can be a better purchase for a student than a five-star professional workstation.

Should I still buy a 2025 winner in 2026?

Possibly, but check the exact model, current price, successor products, support policy, subscriptions, regional availability, and warranty first. The award is a historical endorsement of the product’s 2025 position, not a guarantee that it remains the best current deal.

What is the NAS winner: Asustor AS6804T or Lockerstor 4 Gen3?

The accessible reproduction names the Asustor AS6804T, while ASUSTOR’s January 2026 announcement names the Lockerstor 4 Gen3. The discrepancy should be disclosed rather than silently choosing one. Use the current PCMag page to determine which entry is canonical before purchasing.

Does PCMag naming Proton VPN mean a VPN makes me anonymous?

No. A VPN can encrypt traffic against some local-network observers, but it does not eliminate tracking, phishing, malware, logging risks, or the need for secure accounts and careful browsing. Review the provider’s current policy and plan before subscribing.

The Bottom Line

PCMag’s Best Tech of 2025 is most valuable as a research map: it identifies products and services that PCMag’s editors considered category leaders after testing during the prior year. It is not a universal ranking, a guarantee of low ownership cost, or a current-price guide.

For a 2026 purchase, use the award as the first filter, then verify the live model, successor status, price, recurring fees, compatibility, update policy, privacy terms, repair options, warranty, and availability. That extra check is what turns a respected editorial pick into a sensible purchase for your household or business.
