For most Mac owners filing a 2025 U.S. tax return in the 2026 filing season, H&R Block Online is the best overall choice. It runs in a browser, supports a broad range of tax situations, and offers paths to professional help. Choose TurboTax Online for the most guided experience, TurboTax Desktop for a native Mac application, FreeTaxUSA for a potentially lower-cost complex return, TaxAct Online for another browser-based option, or IRS Free File if you qualify.
The key distinction is whether you want online tax software that works in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox or a downloadable Mac application. Those are not interchangeable, and “free” usually applies only to a limited set of forms.

Quick comparison
| Product | Mac access | Native Mac app | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H&R Block Online | Yes | No | Most Mac users; people who want human-help options | Free tier is limited to simple returns |
| TurboTax Online | Yes | No | Highly guided filing | Price rises when additional forms or help are needed |
| TurboTax Desktop | Not applicable | Yes | Users who want local files and multiple federal returns | 2025 Mac version requires macOS Sonoma 14 or later |
| FreeTaxUSA | Browser-based | No | Price-conscious users with more than a basic return | Verify current pricing, forms, state support, and paid options |
| TaxAct Online | Yes | No | Value-focused browser users | Downloadable products are not available for Mac |
| IRS Free File | Usually online | Generally no | Eligible taxpayers seeking no-cost filing | Partner, form, and state availability varies |
Online compatibility generally matters more than having a Mac-specific app. Browser-based products avoid installation problems and are often usable on Macs that cannot run the latest desktop software. A desktop product is preferable when you want local return files, need to prepare several federal returns, or specifically prefer installed software.
Best overall: H&R Block Online
H&R Block Online is the strongest general recommendation for Mac users who want a balance of guided software, broad tax support, and access to human assistance. It works through a web browser, so there is no Mac installation requirement beyond using a supported browser and operating system.
#1 Best Overall
H&R Block also emphasizes knowing the price before proceeding and offers both online and office-based help. That makes it a practical choice for someone who may begin with do-it-yourself filing but wants the option of professional review or assistance later.
The free product is not a universal free filing option. According to H&R Block’s free-product information, it is intended for simple situations. Itemized deductions, self-employment income, rental property, investment transactions, unemployment, multiple states, and other schedules can move a return into a paid tier. Check the applicable product and state price before entering all your information.
Choose it if: you want a polished browser experience and the possibility of professional help without committing immediately to full-service preparation.
Best guided experience: TurboTax Online
TurboTax Online is a good fit for users who value a highly guided interview, plain-language explanations, document-import features, and multiple levels of assistance. It runs in a Mac browser and does not require the desktop application.
TurboTax separates do-it-yourself filing from Expert Assist and Expert Full Service. These are different services:
- Technical support helps you use the product.
- Tax advice addresses tax questions.
- Expert review involves a professional checking a prepared return.
- Full service means a professional prepares and files the return.
The free edition is aimed at a simple Form 1040 return and qualifying forms. Itemized deductions, unemployment, business income, stock sales, rental property, and other schedules can require a paid plan. “Start for free” therefore does not guarantee a zero-cost completed return.
Prices displayed on TurboTax pages during August 2026 included online do-it-yourself tiers from $0 to $149, Expert Assist from $89 to $209, and Expert Full Service starting at $200, with a promotional starting figure also displayed. These are volatile product-page prices, not a guaranteed quote. State charges may be additional.
Rank #2
Choose it if: you want the most hand-holding and are comfortable paying more if your return requires additional forms or professional help.
Best native Mac application: TurboTax Desktop
If “Mac tax software” means software installed on your Mac, TurboTax Desktop is the clearest option covered here. The 2025 desktop products for the 2026 filing season require macOS Sonoma 14 or later. Available consumer editions include Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business.
TurboTax says its desktop products include preparation and printing of federal returns and up to five federal e-files. State software may be included, but state e-file fees can be separate. Its desktop pricing pages displayed approximately $80 for Deluxe and $130 for Home & Business during August 2026; prices and promotions can change.
There are two especially important Mac limitations:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Quicken and QuickBooks import are unavailable when TurboTax is installed on a Mac. Do not assume the Mac and Windows editions have identical integrations.
- TurboTax Business is Windows-only. Home & Business is a personal tax product and should not be confused with software for a partnership, S corporation, or corporation.
Desktop software is not completely offline. TurboTax requires internet access for installation, activation, updates, e-filing, and some online features. It can still be preferable if you want local files or need to prepare multiple family returns under one license.
Choose it if: your Mac runs Sonoma 14 or later, you want an installed application, and you do not need the Mac version to import Quicken or QuickBooks data.
Best low-cost candidate for a complex return: FreeTaxUSA
FreeTaxUSA is worth comparing when a commercial provider moves you from a free tier into an expensive paid plan because of investments, self-employment, rental income, or other schedules. Its browser-based model should work naturally for Mac users, since compatibility depends primarily on the current browser and supported forms rather than a native Mac application.
Rank #3
However, do not treat “free” as a complete current price quote without checking the official site. Confirm the live federal and state charges, amended-return pricing, support options, audit assistance, and whether your exact forms and state are supported. Secondary comparisons characterize FreeTaxUSA as a low-cost alternative, but that is not a substitute for checking the checkout total.
Choose it if: minimizing cost matters more than a premium interface or extensive live professional assistance and you are comfortable doing more of the work yourself.
Best browser alternative: TaxAct Online
TaxAct Online supports Mac users through its web products. Its published requirements list macOS 10.15 or later with current Chrome or Firefox, and Safari 15 or later.
TaxAct’s downloadable products are not available for Mac OS, so it is not a choice for someone seeking a native Mac application. Its online product can be a reasonable middle ground for taxpayers who want browser access without selecting TurboTax or H&R Block.
Do not use old comparison-page prices as a current quote. TaxAct says some comparison information was based on products available on April 1, 2026. Check the current product page and checkout, especially for state filing and additional forms.

Best free route for eligible taxpayers: IRS Free File
Before paying for commercial software, check IRS Free File. For the 2026 filing season, the IRS states that taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less may qualify for one of its guided partner products.
IRS Free File is not necessarily the same offer as the free tier shown on a company’s ordinary website. Start from the IRS portal, use its eligibility process, and compare the partner’s supported forms and state options. A product can be free for federal preparation while charging for state preparation or state e-filing, and partner-specific restrictions still apply.
Choose it if: your 2025 AGI is within the threshold and one of the participating partners supports your forms and state.
Choose by tax situation, not brand familiarity
Simple W-2 return
If you have W-2 wages, take the standard deduction, and have only qualifying straightforward credits or deductions, start with IRS Free File if eligible. Otherwise compare the free commercial tiers of H&R Block and TurboTax, checking the included forms and state costs.
Homeowner or itemizer
Mortgage interest, significant charitable deductions, and other itemized expenses commonly require a paid tier. Compare H&R Block, TurboTax, TaxAct, and FreeTaxUSA using the final federal-plus-state total, not the advertised starting price.
Investor or cryptocurrency user
Confirm support for brokerage imports, capital gains, cost basis, cryptocurrency transactions, and your particular forms. If you use TurboTax Desktop on a Mac, remember that Quicken and QuickBooks import is unavailable. A large or unusual transaction history may justify professional advice rather than choosing solely by software price.
Freelancer or gig worker
Confirm that the product supports Schedule C and the expense categories you need. A personal “Home & Business” product is not the same as business-entity software. Compare the cost of self-employment support and professional review before starting.

Rental income generally requires Schedule E and can introduce depreciation, passive-activity, and property-expense questions. Confirm form coverage and whether the product’s guidance is sufficient for your circumstances.
Best Value
Multiple family returns
Desktop licensing may be more economical. TurboTax Desktop and H&R Block’s desktop product pages advertise up to five federal e-files, but state preparation and e-filing charges may still apply. Online accounts should not be assumed to have the same household economics.
Old Mac
Check your operating system before buying an application. TurboTax Desktop for the 2025 tax year requires Sonoma 14 or later, while H&R Block’s published software requirements list Mac OS X 10.15.7 or later and TaxAct’s online requirements list macOS 10.15 or later. A browser-based service may work when the newest desktop application does not.
Business entity return
A sole proprietor filing Schedule C is different from a partnership, S corporation, or corporation. TurboTax Business is Windows-only. If you need an entity return, verify dedicated business-tax compatibility or consult a tax professional rather than assuming a personal Mac product will work.

Use this calculation:
Federal product or filing fee + state preparation fee + state e-file fee + expert help or review + add-ons + additional returns = likely total cost.
For example, a taxpayer might see a $0 federal headline price but discover that itemizing requires a paid tier, the state return costs extra, and professional review adds another fee. That is not a contradiction; it is the difference between a limited free tier and the product needed for the actual return.
TurboTax desktop state e-file pricing was listed at $25 per personal state return, with exceptions including New York and Washington, during the cited pricing period. H&R Block’s exact total depends on the product, state, and filing needs. FreeTaxUSA and TaxAct prices should be checked directly at the time of filing.
Online versus downloadable software on a Mac
| Consideration | Online software | Desktop Mac software |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | None | Required |
| Updates | Handled by the service | Updates and activation require internet access |
| Devices | Usually easier to use across devices | Primarily tied to the installed computer |
| Files | Stored and managed through the provider’s account system | Local return files are available |
| Older Mac | May work if the browser and OS are supported | May fail the application’s OS requirement |
| Multiple returns | Check account and per-return rules | Often more attractive; verify e-file and state limits |
Online filing requires an account and internet access. Desktop software gives you more direct control over local files, but retain a PDF of the completed return and a secure backup. Local installation does not mean every feature works offline.

Mac compatibility checklist
- Open Apple menu → About This Mac and record your macOS version.
- Compare it with the exact tax-year requirements, not last year’s requirements.
- Check whether the product supports your current Safari, Chrome, or Firefox version.
- Confirm whether you need a native application or are happy using a browser.
- List the forms you expect: W-2, 1099, Schedule C, Schedule E, investment forms, foreign forms, or multiple states.
- Check whether brokerage, Quicken, QuickBooks, cryptocurrency, or prior-year imports work on Mac specifically.
- Calculate federal, state, e-file, support, and additional-return charges together.
- Confirm whether you need a printer, PDF retention, or local file access.
- For unusual foreign income, complex basis calculations, K-1s, passive-activity issues, or large crypto histories, consider professional advice.
Bottom line
Choose H&R Block Online for the best balance of Mac compatibility, guidance, and access to help. Choose TurboTax Online if the easiest guided workflow matters most. Choose TurboTax Desktop when you specifically want a native Mac application and your Mac runs Sonoma 14 or later. Compare FreeTaxUSA when cost is the priority for a moderately complex return, and use TaxAct Online if you want another browser-based alternative. If your 2025 AGI is $89,000 or less, check IRS Free File first—but verify the participating partner’s forms and state coverage before filing.
