For a new, unlocked U.S. phone costing no more than $500 before tax, the Google Pixel 8a is the safest overall choice in this January 2025 snapshot. It combines the most dependable point-and-shoot camera, compact dimensions, clean software, IP67 water-and-dust resistance, wireless charging, and Google’s seven-year update policy. Its slow charging and merely adequate battery life are real compromises.

Prices and availability below reflect January 2025, not a current 2026 shopping result. “Under $500” means the device price before tax, preferably unlocked and new; trade-in credits, bill credits, activation requirements, and carrier financing do not count as an ordinary unlocked purchase price.

The best smartphones under $500

Phone January 2025 price treatment Best for Key strengths Main compromise
Google Pixel 8a At or below the $499 ceiling; check the exact storage and sale status at Google Store Best overall and still photography Excellent computational photography, compact body, IP67, wireless charging, seven years of updates Slow charging, average battery endurance, no charger in the box
OnePlus 12R Regular pricing could exceed $500; qualifying promotions brought some configurations near the ceiling Gaming, speed and battery Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, high-refresh AMOLED, strong endurance, fast wired charging Sale-dependent value, weaker secondary cameras, no wireless charging
Motorola Edge (2024) Value depends on the verified January retailer price and configuration Display and design Thin design, OLED high-refresh display, wireless charging, stabilized main camera Shorter support, midrange performance, curved-screen repair concerns
Samsung Galaxy A35 5G U.S. unlocked model; verify current listing and storage Samsung ecosystem and expandable storage 120Hz AMOLED, IP67, microSD slot, One UI, straightforward U.S. availability Slower performance and charging than the leading alternatives
Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) Usually positioned below $500; exact January price varies by retailer Stylus, headphone jack and microSD Large display, stylus, expandable storage, wired-audio port, large battery Basic stylus, shorter support, weaker cameras
Nothing Phone (2a) Often below $400 where officially sold; U.S. stock must be confirmed Distinctive design and clean interface Glyph design, smooth software, good battery life U.S. carrier and warranty limitations; no wireless charging

The ranking uses a practical framework: overall usability and performance (25%), camera (20%), battery and charging (15%), software support (15%), display and build (10%), connectivity and practical features (10%), and verified price (5%). Those weights are editorial criteria, not laboratory test results.

Best overall: Google Pixel 8a

The Pixel 8a is the default recommendation for most buyers. Its strength is consistency: the main camera produces excellent daylight and night stills with little effort, skin tones are generally dependable, and Google’s processing handles ordinary snapshots better than most midrange rivals. That is a recommendation for computational point-and-shoot photography—not a claim that it has the most versatile zoom, fastest action capture, or best professional video.

#1 Best Overall
Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G | 2024 | Unlocked | Made for US 8/128GB | 50MP Camera | Caramel Latte
  • NEW built-in stylus. Jot notes, edit photos, sketch artwork, and navigate effortlessly with an improved stylus and updated software.
  • 6.7" pOLED display and Dolby Atmos. Experience cinema-quality entertainment with over a billion shades of color and multidimensional sound*.
  • 50MP Ultra Pixel camera + OIS. Capture sharper low-light photos and smoother videos with an unshakable camera system featuring Optical Image Stabilization.
  • 30W TurboPower charging + over a day battery. Get hours of power in just minutes of charging, then work and play with unbelievable battery life**.
  • Standout design. Make a statement with its stunning look, modern color, and soft, vegan leather finish.

Google’s Tensor G3 enables Pixel features and feels fast for messaging, navigation, photography and normal multitasking. It is not the best option for sustained high-end gaming, where heat and efficiency matter more than a short benchmark burst. The relatively compact body is easier to use one-handed than most alternatives, while IP67 resistance and wireless charging are unusual at this price.

Google promises seven years of operating-system and security updates for the Pixel 8a, counted from its launch policy and subject to regional/carrier delivery timing (Google’s update policy). The trade-offs are a slow charging rate, acceptable rather than class-leading endurance, a plastic rear panel, and no included power adapter. Reviews from Android Authority, Wired, Digital Trends, and TechRadar support this balance.

Best performance and battery when discounted: OnePlus 12R

The OnePlus 12R is the specialist pick when an exact unlocked configuration is genuinely at or below $500. Its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is substantially faster than the chips in conventional budget phones, making it the better choice for demanding games, multitasking and longer performance headroom. The large, high-refresh AMOLED panel and fast wired charging reinforce that advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its camera system is less consistent than the Pixel 8a, especially away from the main camera. There is no wireless charging, and curved display edges can create accidental touches, make screen protection harder and raise repair costs. Treat the price as promotion-dependent: compare the exact storage, unlocked status and sale end date on OnePlus’s U.S. page. Do not generalize update promises from newer OnePlus models; check documentation for the U.S. 12R.

Best display and design value: Motorola Edge (2024)

The Motorola Edge suits shoppers who care about a thin, light-looking phone and a large OLED screen more than maximum camera or gaming performance. Its high-refresh panel, wireless charging and optically stabilized main camera are attractive when the verified selling price is meaningfully below the Pixel 8a.

Motorola’s support commitment is shorter than Google’s, and the camera is less dependable in difficult light. Performance is midrange. Curved glass may look premium but increases protector and replacement complexity. Check the precise storage, carrier variant and security schedule at Motorola and its security-update page; reviews are available from PCMag and Tom’s Guide.

Best Samsung choice: Galaxy A35 5G

The Galaxy A35 5G is the straightforward U.S. Samsung recommendation. It offers a large 120Hz AMOLED display, IP67 resistance, familiar One UI, Samsung ecosystem integration and a microSD slot. It is a sensible everyday phone for someone who values Samsung’s service network and expandable storage over peak speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pixel 8a is faster and more reliable in challenging camera conditions; OnePlus charges faster. Samsung’s support terms must be checked for this exact model and region rather than borrowed from Galaxy S phones. Use Samsung’s U.S. product page and security scope. Reviews: Android Authority and Tom’s Guide.

Best practical features: Moto G Stylus 5G (2024)

Choose the Moto G Stylus 5G when a built-in pen, microSD card slot and headphone jack solve real problems. The stylus handles notes, signatures, markup and navigation; the large screen and battery suit media and travel. It is often far below $500, but the exact retailer price and configuration matter.

This is not a camera or longevity leader. Its performance is adequate, the stylus is basic compared with Samsung’s S Pen, and Motorola’s shorter support period is a meaningful ownership cost. Confirm the model at Motorola; see PCMag’s review.

  • US Model – Global Connectivity – Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Straight Talk.

Best distinctive alternative, if officially obtainable: Nothing Phone (2a)

The Phone (2a) offers transparent styling, Glyph lighting and a clean interface that feels less generic than most budget phones. It can be compelling below $400 in markets with official sales.

U.S. buyers must verify official stock, warranty, bands, eSIM, Wi-Fi calling and carrier acceptance before paying. Imported units can lose those assurances, and its camera and support period trail the Pixel 8a. Start with Nothing’s U.S. page and reviews from Tom’s Guide and Wired.

When spending closer to $300 makes sense

OnePlus Nord N30 5G

The Nord N30 is a reasonable low-cost choice for a bright display, fast charging and a headphone jack. Its limited software support makes it a poor substitute for a $500-class phone if you can afford one (review).

Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)

The Moto G Power prioritizes battery and low purchase cost. It is appropriate when the budget is genuinely near $300, not when the goal is the best overall phone under $500 (review).

International and refurbished alternatives

Galaxy A55 5G: import-only caution

Samsung widely reviewed the A55 internationally, but it was not broadly sold through the same official U.S. channel as the A35. An imported A55 may have different LTE/5G bands, no U.S. warranty, uncertain eSIM or Wi-Fi calling, payment-service limitations and regional update timing. Treat it as an import only after checking the exact model and seller (UK product page; review).

Discounted older flagships

A Pixel 8, Galaxy S23 FE or similar older flagship can beat a new midrange phone in materials, cameras or processor speed. Buy only when the exact unlocked unit is under $500 and the listing states whether it is new, open-box or refurbished, its remaining support period, battery condition, warranty and return policy. Compare remaining supported years—not just launch specifications.

How to choose by priority

  • Camera: Pixel 8a for computational still photography; choose another model only for a specific need such as longer-range zoom or specialized video.
  • Gaming and speed: OnePlus 12R, but only at a verified sub-$500 price.
  • Battery: OnePlus 12R for high performance, or Moto G Power for a lower budget; capacity alone does not prove endurance.
  • Longest support: Pixel 8a’s seven-year Google policy is the clearest advantage.
  • Compact size: Pixel 8a; most alternatives are larger.
  • Samsung ecosystem: Galaxy A35 5G.
  • Stylus, wired headphones or expandable storage: Moto G Stylus 5G; Galaxy A35 also provides microSD.
  • Distinctive design: Nothing Phone (2a), only with confirmed U.S. support.

What “under $500” should include

Compare the checkout price of the phone itself before tax. Keep unlocked retail, carrier promotions, trade-in offers, financing and bill credits in separate categories. A $199 phone requiring a new line, premium plan and 36 months of credits is not equivalent to a $499 unlocked purchase.

Include hidden costs: a USB-C charger if none is supplied, a case, screen protection and—on 128GB phones—possibly cloud storage. A 128GB capacity is adequate for streaming and ordinary photos, but 4K video, large games, offline media and five-year ownership favor 256GB or microSD support. A microSD card primarily expands media storage and does not equal internal-storage speed on every phone.

Carrier, durability and purchase checklist

  1. Record the exact model number, storage and region.
  2. Confirm the phone is unlocked and supports your carrier’s LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, eSIM and Wi-Fi calling.
  3. Run the model or IMEI through the official checker: AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.
  4. Check warranty territory, seller identity, return window and refurbished battery guarantee.
  5. Verify the model-specific Android and security-update commitment and how carrier timing applies.
  6. Check IP rating, screen material, flat or curved edges, case availability and likely repair-part access. IP67 is water-and-dust resistance, not a guarantee against every liquid-damage claim.
  7. Confirm whether the box includes a charger and budget for a compatible USB-C adapter if necessary.
  8. Separate temporary sale prices from regular pricing, and do not treat trade-in value as the phone’s ordinary purchase price.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Pixel 8a still the best phone under $500?

For the January 2025 U.S. market covered here, it is the default overall pick because of camera consistency, compact size, clean software and seven-year update support. Its slow charging and average battery prevent it from being ideal for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the OnePlus 12R worth buying on sale?

Yes, if the exact unlocked configuration is at or below $500 and you prioritize gaming, speed, battery endurance and fast wired charging over camera versatility and wireless charging.

Should I buy a refurbished flagship instead?

It can be the better value if the unlocked model is under $500 and the listing clearly states battery health, warranty, return period, storage, cosmetic grade and remaining software support.

Is 128GB enough?

Usually for streaming, ordinary photos and cloud-backed files. Choose 256GB or microSD support if you record substantial 4K video, download large games, keep offline media or plan to keep the phone for five years or more.
