Google News is the best all-purpose SmartNews alternative for most readers. It assembles free local, national and world coverage in one feed. Choose Ground News if you want to compare how different outlets frame a story, Apple News for an Apple-native news-and-magazine experience, Feedly for complete control over your sources, Reuters or BBC News for direct reporting from established newsrooms, Readly for a paid newspaper-and-magazine bundle, NewsBreak for local alerts, or Flipboard for magazine-style discovery.
No single app is objectively “the least biased.” Each makes different trade-offs between algorithmic convenience, source control, geographic depth, direct reporting, alerts, paywalls and offline reading. The guide below matches those trade-offs to the way you actually read news.

Google News: the closest broad replacement
Google News is the practical first stop when you want one free stream spanning local, national and international stories. Its documented categories include local, nationwide and world news, so it covers the three geographic levels in the title without requiring you to build a source list first.

Why it works as a SmartNews replacement
- Wide scope: local headlines sit alongside national and world sections.
- Low setup: the feed is assembled automatically instead of requiring RSS subscriptions.
- Free access: the service is described as a free alternative for broad news discovery.
The trade-off is control. An automatically assembled feed can surface a convenient mix of outlets, but it does not give you the same deliberate source ownership as a feed reader. If you want to understand why two publications describe the same event differently, use a comparison-focused service or open the underlying outlets rather than treating the first headline as a complete account.
Ground News: best for seeing how coverage differs
Ground News is the strongest fit for the question “Which app shows both sides of a story?” Its platform presents comparison tools for local and international coverage, highlights blind spots, and exposes ownership-related information. TechRadar also describes source-bias labels and left, center and right coverage proportions.
What the comparison view adds
- Coverage proportions: you can see whether a story is being covered mainly by outlets associated with one point on the political spectrum.
- Bias labels: labels provide an orientation for comparing outlets, not a verdict that a particular article is true or false.
- Ownership context: ownership tools help you investigate who controls or funds a publication.
- Blindspot discovery: the service calls attention to stories receiving attention from one side of the media ecosystem but not another.
Ground News is not a substitute for reading the original reporting. Use its comparison as a checklist: open multiple articles, check dates and primary documents, and separate differences in framing from differences in verified facts. Its local tools make it more useful than a purely national comparison service when a story affects your area.
Apple News and Apple News+: best for an Apple-native reading experience
Apple’s product page and App Store editorial collection position Apple News as “News + magazines, in one app.” That makes it a natural alternative for readers already using Apple devices who prefer a unified reading interface instead of a separate aggregator, feed reader and magazine app.
What to know before choosing it
- Regional catalogues matter: available publications, features and Apple News+ pricing vary by region.
- It combines formats: the proposition includes both news and magazines rather than only breaking headlines.
- It is not a universal local guarantee: local depth depends on the publishers and edition available in your region.
Check the Apple News product page and the subscription screen shown for your country before treating Apple News+ as a specific value. A catalogue that is strong in one market may have a different mix of newspapers and magazines elsewhere.
Feedly: best when you want to choose every source
Feedly is a source-controlled feed reader. Instead of asking an algorithm to decide which publishers represent a topic, you add the RSS feeds and subjects you trust, then read updates in one place. It appears in Apple’s news-app collection and has an official service site.

How to build a balanced local-to-global feed
- Add local sources first: follow your city newspaper, public broadcaster, local television station or community publication, where RSS feeds are offered.
- Add national reporting: include several outlets with different editorial approaches so one publisher does not define your national feed.
- Add international sources: follow at least one globally oriented newsroom and one source focused on regions you follow.
- Separate topics into folders: create Local, National, World and Specialist folders so a busy breaking-news cycle does not bury local updates.
- Review inactive feeds: remove sources that publish rarely, duplicate another feed or no longer cover the subject you added them for.
Feedly gives you more transparency over inputs than a fully automatic aggregator, but it requires maintenance. Local coverage is only as deep as the feeds available and the sources you select. It also will not automatically create the cross-outlet perspective comparison that Ground News emphasizes.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reuters: best for direct global reporting
The Reuters app is suited to readers who want a newsroom’s own reporting rather than a mixed publisher feed. TechRadar describes customized feeds, alerts, video and podcasts, with a globally oriented reporting focus.
When Reuters is the better choice
- You need international business, political and general-news reporting from one global newsroom.
- You prefer to customize topics and receive alerts from that newsroom.
- You want reporting supplemented by video and podcasts inside the same app.
Reuters is not positioned as a hyperlocal alert service. Keep a local source or local-alert app alongside it if neighborhood incidents, school closures or city-government updates are your priority.
BBC News: best for world coverage with a UK center of gravity
BBC News offers topic selection, top-story alerts, live news, analysis, video and podcasts. Its strongest geographic emphasis is the UK, with substantial world coverage, so it is a particularly good fit for UK readers or anyone who wants a major international broadcaster with a UK perspective.
How it differs from an aggregator
You are following the BBC’s reporting and presentation rather than receiving an automatically mixed set of publishers. That can make the experience more coherent, but it also means you should add other sources when you need a broader range of national perspectives or detailed local reporting outside the UK.

Readly: best for a paid publication bundle and offline reading

Who gets the most value
- Magazine readers: the catalogue includes magazines as well as newspapers.
- Archive readers: back issues let you read beyond the current news cycle.
- Travelers and commuters: offline downloads reduce dependence on a live connection while reading.
Readly is only as useful for local or international coverage as the publications in its catalogue. Check the catalogue for your country and the titles you actually read before subscribing; a universal price or identical publication list by region is not provided.
NewsBreak: best when local alerts come first
Apple’s App Store editorial page labels NewsBreak “Local News & Alerts Weather, Safety & Crime Alerts.” That positioning makes it a candidate for readers whose first question is what is happening nearby, especially around weather, safety and crime.
Local availability should be verified before you rely on it. Coverage can differ substantially by market, and a local-alert service should not be assumed to provide the same national and international breadth as Google News, Reuters or BBC News.
Flipboard: best for magazine-style discovery
Apple’s listing calls Flipboard “The Social Magazine.” Its strength is presentation and discovery: you browse a magazine-like stream built around interests and followed sources rather than a strictly chronological wire.
Flipboard works well when you enjoy discovering topics and publications visually. It is less suitable when you need a clearly defined newsroom, a documented bias-comparison framework or guaranteed local reporting. Follow specific sources and topics deliberately if you want the feed to stay useful during a fast-moving event.

If you want one free app for all three geographic levels
Choose Google News. Its local, nationwide and world categories make it the most direct broad replacement. Add a direct newsroom app when an important story needs more context than an aggregator headline provides.

Choose Ground News for source-bias labels, ownership context, coverage proportions and blindspot tools. Treat those features as prompts to read more than one original article, not as an automatic truth score.
If you want complete control over publishers
Choose Feedly and build separate local, national and international folders. This takes more setup but makes the sources in your feed explicit.
If you want direct reporting rather than aggregation
Choose Reuters for globally oriented reporting or BBC News for world coverage with a strong UK emphasis. Their topic controls and alerts keep the experience focused on one newsroom’s output.
If you want newspapers and magazines, including offline issues
Choose Readly, then confirm that its catalogue includes the publications and back issues you care about in your region.
If alerts about your immediate area matter most
Try NewsBreak after checking local coverage. Keep a second app for national and international stories because local alerts are its defining use case.

Reducing bias regardless of the app
An app can change how easily you encounter different viewpoints, but it cannot remove editorial choices. Use a repeatable reading routine:
- Read the headline and publication date, then open the full article.
- Identify whether the item is reporting, analysis, opinion or a live update.
- Compare at least two independent outlets on consequential stories; Ground News can help you find contrasting coverage.
- Look for primary documents, official statements or direct data when an article makes a precise factual claim.
- Check whether an alert is local and current or a recycled story that has resurfaced in your feed.
- Use topic and source controls to mute duplicate coverage instead of treating repetition as confirmation.
For the widest perspective, combine a broad aggregator with either a source-controlled reader or a direct newsroom app. That combination separates discovery from verification.
Alerts, paywalls and offline reading: the practical trade-offs
Alerts
Reuters offers alerts, BBC News offers top-story alerts, and NewsBreak is explicitly positioned around local, weather, safety and crime alerts. Alert volume is not the same as usefulness: configure only the topics and locations you can act on, or important notifications will be buried.
Paywalls and subscriptions
Google News is described as free. Apple News+ and Readly are paid offerings whose availability, pricing and catalogues can vary by region. No single comparable price applies to every service, so check the current in-app or official offer before subscribing.
Offline reading
Readly is specifically described as supporting downloads for offline reading. Other alternatives may not offer the same offline feature, so do not assume that a feed or newsroom app will remain fully readable without a connection.
A simple setup that covers local, national and international news
- Use Google News as the discovery layer: start with local, nationwide and world sections.
- Add one verification layer: use Reuters or BBC News for direct newsroom reporting, depending on your geographic interests.
- Add Ground News for disputed or politically charged stories: compare coverage, ownership and blindspots before deciding what to read next.
- Use Feedly if source control matters: replace or supplement the automatic feed with folders of publishers you selected yourself.
- Enable only useful alerts: choose top stories, local safety or weather notifications according to your needs.
- Review your setup monthly: remove duplicate, inactive or low-value sources and confirm that local coverage still reflects where you live.
What cannot be concluded
There is no single comparable satisfaction or market-share figure that honestly ranks every SmartNews alternative. The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2025 PDF provides ecosystem context, but it does not establish an individual app’s superiority or transfer an outlet-reach number into an app recommendation. The choices above reflect each service’s stated features and positioning, not a claim that one service wins every category.
