Best Semiconductor ETFs for Diversifying Beyond a Single Chip Stock

For the broadest spread across semiconductor companies, start with XSD. Its equal-weight design across 44 holdings reduces dependence on Nvidia or any other mega-cap. Choose SOXX when you want an established, liquid large-cap basket with 30 U.S.-listed holdings and a 0.34% expense ratio. SOXQ is a capped 30-stock compromise, while SMH suits investors who accept larger market-cap weights and want a highly liquid benchmark.

None of these funds removes semiconductor-sector risk. Your choice changes how much one company, a handful of mega-caps, or smaller chip businesses drive the result. Check current holdings, prospectus fees, bid-ask spreads and tax consequences immediately before placing an order.

Which semiconductor ETF best reduces single-stock risk?

XSD for the strongest single-name counterweight

The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) is the clearest fit when your primary concern is replacing one chip stock with a genuinely broad basket. The cited comparison describes an equal-weighted portfolio of 44 holdings. In an equal-weight structure, a smaller company receives a similar starting position to a larger one, so the fund’s outcome is less dependent on Nvidia or another dominant constituent.

That design changes the risk rather than eliminating it. Smaller semiconductor companies can be more volatile, and an equal-weight fund may lag a market-cap-weighted fund during a period when the largest chip companies lead the sector. XSD still moves with semiconductor demand, valuations, manufacturing capacity and the global supply chain.

SOXX for a balanced, established core holding

The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) is the practical middle choice for investors who want a long-established large-cap semiconductor allocation without SMH’s highest single-name weighting. BlackRock iShares’ 2026 fact sheet reports 30 holdings and a 0.34% expense ratio. The cited comparison describes SOXX’s holdings as spread more evenly than SMH’s, while remaining focused on U.S.-listed semiconductor companies.

SOXX is not equal-weighted. Its methodology can still leave meaningful exposure to the largest companies, but the cited comparison portrays the distribution as more balanced than SMH. Confirm the current holdings and prospectus before trading because weights, constituents and fees change.

SOXQ for a capped 30-stock compromise

The Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ) sits between the two approaches. The cited comparison describes a 30-stock portfolio tied to the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index, with the largest positions kept at or below roughly 10%. That cap limits the chance that one company dominates the fund while preserving a concentrated list of established semiconductor names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SOXQ is rebalanced quarterly and reconstituted annually according to the cited comparison. Those scheduled changes can alter the fund’s exposures even when the underlying sector story has not changed. Confirm the current holdings, expense ratio and implementation details in Invesco’s prospectus.

SMH when liquidity and mega-cap exposure are acceptable

The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) tracks the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index and uses market-cap weighting, according to the cited comparison. It is described as the largest semiconductor ETF by assets and can serve as a liquid core holding. The same comparison reports a 36.9% annualized trailing-10-year total return. That is a historical observation, not a forecast; as iShares states for SOXX, “The performance quoted represents past performance and does not guarantee future results.”

SMH’s market-cap approach means the largest companies can have substantially greater influence than smaller constituents. Before buying it to diversify away from a single chip stock, inspect the current Nvidia, TSMC and other top weights. If those names already dominate your portfolio, SMH may reduce company-specific risk less than its label suggests.

How weighting determines diversification

Equal weighting

Equal weighting gives each constituent a similar target allocation at a rebalance. XSD’s cited 44-holding structure is the clearest example in this group. The approach spreads company-specific risk, but it also requires periodic selling of stocks that have grown above their target and buying those that have fallen below it. That can increase exposure to smaller or weaker companies just as market leadership is narrowing.

Market-cap weighting

Market-cap weighting assigns larger positions to companies with larger market values. SMH uses this approach, so gains in a mega-cap can increase its influence while declines in that company can affect the ETF more heavily. Market-cap weighting generally requires less forced turnover than equal weighting, but it can become concentrated after a period of outperformance by a few leaders.

Capped market-cap weighting

A capped approach limits the maximum position while retaining a market-oriented ranking. SOXQ’s largest positions are described as no more than roughly 10% in the cited comparison. A cap can prevent one company from overwhelming the portfolio, although several large positions can still make up a substantial share of assets.

Semiconductor ETF comparison

ETF Weighting and index Holdings Published cost or performance data Best suited to
SOXX More evenly distributed than SMH; broad U.S.-listed semiconductor exposure 30 0.34% expense ratio in BlackRock iShares’ 2026 fact sheet An established, balanced large-cap core allocation
XSD Equal-weighted; tracks the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index 44 About $19 in annual fee drag on $10,000 in the cited 2026 comparison Reducing dependence on the largest chip companies
SOXQ Capped portfolio tied to the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index; quarterly rebalance and annual reconstitution 30 Not stated in the cited comparison; verify the current Invesco prospectus A middle ground between mega-cap concentration and equal weighting
SMH Market-cap weighted; tracks the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index 25 index constituents 0.35% in the cited 2026 comparison; 36.9% annualized trailing-10-year total return reported there Investors comfortable with larger top-company weights and seeking a highly liquid benchmark

The SOXX fee figures illustrate why you should check the date and document behind a number. The 2026 iShares fact sheet reports 0.34%, while the cited comparison rounds SOXX to 0.35%. Treat the current prospectus and official fund page as controlling when the figures differ. XSD’s approximately $19 per $10,000 is an estimated annual fee drag from the cited comparison, not a guarantee of the amount deducted from your account.

What each fund actually changes in your portfolio

SOXX: fewer names than XSD, but a broad core

With 30 reported holdings, SOXX gives exposure to a defined group of U.S.-listed semiconductor companies rather than the entire global technology industry. Its more even profile relative to SMH can reduce the impact of a single mega-cap, yet it remains a large-cap-oriented sector fund. Review the latest top-ten list to see whether it overlaps with stocks you already own directly.

XSD: wider name count and smaller-company exposure

XSD’s 44 holdings and equal-weight method make it the most direct answer to “How do I avoid betting on one chip stock?” The trade-off is that returns can be driven more by smaller constituents, whose earnings, financing access and share prices may be more sensitive to the semiconductor cycle. Equal weighting does not create geographic diversification beyond the index’s eligible companies, so check the current country and listing breakdown.

SOXQ: an explicit ceiling on the largest positions

SOXQ’s roughly 10% maximum for its largest positions addresses concentration mechanically. Its quarterly rebalancing can reset weights several times a year, while the annual reconstitution determines which companies qualify for the index. The cap does not guarantee equal exposure: companies below the cap can still have different weights, and the fund remains a focused semiconductor portfolio.

SMH: the benchmark-like market-cap option

SMH’s 25-stock index is narrower than SOXX or XSD. Market-cap weighting can make it efficient for following the sector’s largest listed businesses, but that same feature can amplify the effect of a handful of winners or losers. Its reported 36.9% annualized trailing-10-year return should be read as a backward-looking statistic for the period measured by the cited 2026 comparison, not as an expected return.

Costs, spreads and liquidity: what to check before buying

Expense ratio is only the visible cost

An expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and therefore reduces returns over time. Compare the current figure, not an old screenshot or a rounded number from a secondary article. XSD’s cited annual fee drag of about $19 on a $10,000 investment provides an intuitive scale, while SOXX’s official 2026 fact-sheet figure is 0.34%.

Bid-ask spread can matter on the trade date

The spread is the difference between the price at which you can buy and the price at which you can sell. A liquid ETF generally has a narrower spread, but the spread can widen near the open, near the close, during market stress or when the underlying stocks are difficult to price. Use a limit order when the displayed spread is wider than you are willing to pay, and avoid assuming that a low expense ratio guarantees low trading costs.

Trading volume is not the same as fund quality

SMH is described as the largest semiconductor ETF by assets and is often used as a liquid benchmark. Still, compare the live bid-ask spread, average volume and assets of every candidate in your brokerage account. Liquidity in the ETF and liquidity in its underlying holdings both affect execution.

A step-by-step way to choose

  1. Define the risk you are replacing. List the semiconductor stocks you already own directly and estimate how much of your portfolio they represent. An ETF may add little diversification if its top holdings overlap heavily with those positions.
  2. Choose the weighting rule before looking at past returns. Select equal weighting if reducing single-company dependence is the priority, a cap if you want a ceiling on the largest positions, or market-cap weighting if you accept concentration in exchange for a benchmark-like structure.
  3. Check the current holdings. Open the latest fund holdings file and record the top ten, total holdings, country exposure and any company that appears both in the ETF and in your individual-stock account. The figures in the table are dated 2026 descriptions and can change.
  4. Compare total implementation cost. Note the current expense ratio, ordinary bid-ask spread, commission policy at your broker and any tax consequences of selling an existing position. A small fee difference can be outweighed by a consistently wide spread or by realizing a large taxable gain.
  5. Decide how much sector risk you actually want. A semiconductor ETF is a concentrated sector allocation, not a replacement for a diversified stock-and-bond portfolio. Set a position size that remains tolerable if chip prices, demand or valuations fall together.
  6. Place the order deliberately. Check the ticker, exchange, limit price, share quantity and estimated dollar exposure. Review the confirmation to ensure you bought the intended unleveraged fund rather than a similarly named product.
  7. Set a review rule. Revisit the top holdings, expense ratio, index methodology and your overall semiconductor allocation on a schedule, such as quarterly or when a direct holding changes materially. Do not trade solely because a fund’s recent return is higher or lower than another’s.

Tax-loss harvesting and account placement

Different index methodologies can be useful when you are harvesting a tax loss, because a replacement fund must be evaluated for whether it is substantially identical under the rules that apply to your account and jurisdiction. XSD, SOXX, SOXQ and SMH follow different indexes and weighting systems, but that difference alone is not a tax conclusion. Record the purchase and sale dates, observe the applicable waiting period and consult a qualified tax professional if the loss is significant.

In a taxable account, compare the tax effect of selling an individual chip stock with the cost of continuing to hold it. In a tax-advantaged account, the immediate tax trade-off may differ, but fund expenses and concentration still matter. Keep statements showing the cost basis and reinvested distributions so that a future sale is reported correctly.

Risks that remain after diversification

Semiconductor cyclicality

Chip demand can swing with consumer electronics, data-center investment, automobiles and industrial production. An ETF diversifies company-specific execution risk but does not stop the entire sector from falling during an inventory correction or spending slowdown.

AI-cycle and valuation risk

Strong expectations for artificial-intelligence infrastructure can raise the valuations of chip designers, equipment makers and foundries. If expectations cool, several holdings can re-rate together even when their businesses remain profitable. A high historical return, such as SMH’s reported 36.9% annualized trailing-10-year figure, does not establish a forward return.

Supply-chain dependence

Semiconductor production relies on specialized equipment, materials, packaging and foundry capacity spread across countries. A disruption at one link can affect many ETF holdings at once. Nasdaq’s 2026 research reports that TSMC generated NT$3.8 trillion (US$120.6 billion) in full-year 2025 revenue, up 32%. That scale illustrates the international importance of a major foundry; it does not remove supply-chain or geopolitical risk.

International and geopolitical exposure

U.S.-listed funds can still own companies whose factories, customers or suppliers are outside the United States. Tensions, export controls, sanctions, currency movements and changes in industrial policy can affect earnings and valuations. Read the current country and revenue exposure rather than inferring it from the fund’s listing venue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equal-weight volatility

Equal weighting limits mega-cap dominance but can increase the influence of smaller, less established companies. Those holdings may have less diversified revenue, thinner trading markets or greater sensitivity to financing conditions. XSD’s diversification across 44 names should therefore be viewed as a reduction in company concentration, not a promise of lower volatility in every market.

Do not confuse leveraged semiconductor products with diversification ETFs

Direxion describes SOXL and SOXS as seeking 300% or -300% of the NYSE Semiconductor Index’s performance for a single day. Their daily reset means that returns over weeks or months can differ sharply from three times, or negative three times, the index’s cumulative move. Direxion also cautions that short-term performance is not a good indication of future results.

Those products are trading instruments with a materially different risk profile. They are not ordinary long-term substitutes for SOXX, XSD, SOXQ or SMH and should not be selected merely because their names contain “semiconductor.”

Checklist before you buy

  • Read the latest prospectus and holdings file for the exact fund and share class.
  • Confirm the current expense ratio; do not rely on the rounded SOXX comparison figure if the official fact sheet has changed.
  • Compare the live bid-ask spread and normal trading volume at the time you plan to trade.
  • Check top-ten overlap with every chip stock you already own.
  • Verify whether the fund is unleveraged and whether its index is equal-weighted, capped or market-cap weighted.
  • Estimate the position’s effect on your total sector allocation, including indirect exposure through broad-market funds.
  • Review tax lots and harvesting rules before selling an existing position.
  • Set an allocation and review schedule instead of chasing the fund with the best recent return.

Bottom line for a single-stock diversification decision

Use XSD when spreading exposure across the largest number of similarly weighted names is the overriding goal. Use SOXX for a balanced, established 30-holding core with the 0.34% expense ratio reported in iShares’ 2026 fact sheet. Use SOXQ when a roughly 10% ceiling on the largest positions is more appealing than either full equal weighting or unconstrained market-cap weighting. Use SMH only after deciding that its 25-stock, market-cap-weighted structure and larger mega-cap influence fit your existing portfolio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever route you choose, make the final decision from current holdings, fees, spreads, index documents and your tax position. The ETF can diversify a company bet; it cannot diversify away the semiconductor sector itself.
