Best Semiconductor ETFs for Broad Chip-Industry Exposure

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

There is no single best semiconductor ETF. SMH is the leader-heavy, globally oriented choice; SOXX offers a 30-stock U.S.-listed portfolio with the lowest cited fee and relatively even large positions; XSD uses modified equal weighting to spread exposure across large-, mid- and small-cap semiconductor companies. The right fund depends on how much concentration, international exposure and small-cap volatility you can accept.

All three provide breadth inside the chip industry, not across the whole stock market. Holdings, weights, assets and trading statistics below are dated snapshots from October 2026 and can change.

What “broad semiconductor exposure” actually means

A semiconductor ETF bundles many chip-related companies into one exchange-traded fund. Instead of selecting individual designers, manufacturers or equipment suppliers, you buy shares in a portfolio that follows a stated index. A single trade can therefore cover multiple parts of the supply chain.

“Broad” is relative. These funds diversify within semiconductors, but they remain concentrated sector funds. They do not replace a total-market or global-equity fund, because their performance can be driven by the same industry-specific forces: the capital-spending cycle, inventory corrections, supply disruptions, export controls, tariffs and geopolitical events.

The three leading choices use different index designs:

  • SMH follows the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index and emphasizes liquid industry leaders, including foreign companies that trade on U.S. exchanges.
  • SOXX follows the NYSE Semiconductor Index, a U.S. equity index covering companies across the semiconductor value chain.
  • XSD follows the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index with a modified equal-weight approach intended to include large-, mid- and small-cap stocks without allowing the biggest companies to dominate.

Those construction rules matter more than the small difference in annual fees. A market-cap-oriented fund can be pulled by a handful of mega-cap winners, while an equal-weight fund gives smaller constituents a much larger influence.

SMH vs. SOXX vs. XSD at a glance

ETF Benchmark and method Holdings snapshot Largest-position information Geographic scope Semiconductor/equipment mix Expense ratio Assets and trading data
SMH MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index; emphasizes liquid industry leaders 26 holdings on October 15, 2026 Nvidia 20.06%; TSMC 9.32%; AMD 5.57%; Broadcom 5.55%. The four listed positions totaled 40.50%. U.S.-listed companies, with meaningful non-U.S. exposure through foreign issuers Not stated in the cited snapshot; the index includes semiconductor production and equipment companies 0.35% total expense ratio $65.68 billion total net assets as of October 16, 2026; bid/ask spread not stated
SOXX NYSE Semiconductor Index; U.S. semiconductor-sector equity index 30 holdings in October 2026 June 30, 2026 fact sheet: Micron 8.54%; AMD 8.09%; Nvidia 6.81%; Intel 6.33%; Broadcom 6.08%. The five listed positions totaled 35.85%. U.S. equity index and U.S.-listed portfolio 75.59% semiconductors and 23.97% semiconductor equipment on June 30, 2026 0.33% $39.34 billion net assets; 0.02% 30-day median bid/ask spread, both listed for October 2026
XSD S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index; modified equal weight 47 holdings as of October 15, 2026 Top individual weight not stated; equal-weight construction is intended to reduce dependence on the largest companies U.S. semiconductor industry universe; international representation not stated in the cited snapshot Not stated in the cited snapshot 0.35% gross expense ratio $2.74764 billion assets under management as of October 15, 2026; bid/ask spread not stated

Expense ratios are close: SOXX is 0.02 percentage points below SMH and XSD in the cited figures. On a $10,000 balance, a 0.33% annual expense ratio would equal about $33 before compounding and market movement, while 0.35% would equal about $35. The actual dollar deduction varies with the fund’s assets and is reflected in returns rather than billed as a separate invoice.

SMH: concentrated exposure to industry leaders

How the index is built

VanEck says SMH seeks to replicate the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index. The index is designed for companies involved in semiconductor production and equipment and favors highly liquid industry leaders. Because it uses U.S.-listed securities, it can include major foreign businesses without requiring you to trade on overseas exchanges.

What the October 2026 snapshot shows

The fund held 26 securities on October 15, 2026. Nvidia represented 20.06%, followed by TSMC at 9.32%, AMD at 5.57%, Broadcom at 5.55%, Texas Instruments at 4.95%, Micron at 4.68%, ASML at 4.45% and Applied Materials at 4.25%. The top four alone accounted for 40.50%, so a large move in Nvidia or another leading constituent can materially affect the ETF.

Who might prefer SMH

  • Investors who want prominent exposure to the largest and most liquid semiconductor companies.
  • Investors who value non-U.S. industry participation through U.S.-listed foreign issuers.
  • Investors who understand that a roughly one-fifth Nvidia position creates meaningful single-company concentration.

SMH can be a poor fit if your main objective is to limit any one stock’s influence. Its global reach also introduces additional country, currency and geopolitical considerations compared with a portfolio restricted to U.S. companies.

SOXX: a liquid 30-stock portfolio with balanced top positions

How the index is built

iShares describes SOXX as tracking the NYSE Semiconductor Index, a U.S. equity index of semiconductor-sector companies. The fund is intended to span the value chain, including businesses positioned to benefit from artificial-intelligence and digital-infrastructure investment.

Holdings, industry mix and liquidity

The October 2026 issuer page listed 30 holdings, a 0.33% expense ratio and $39.34 billion in net assets. It also reported a 0.02% 30-day median bid/ask spread, a useful indicator of trading liquidity. A narrow spread does not eliminate execution risk, but it generally means the quoted buy and sell prices are close under normal conditions.

The June 30, 2026 fact sheet allocated 75.59% to semiconductors and 23.97% to semiconductor equipment. Its listed largest positions were Micron at 8.54%, AMD at 8.09%, Nvidia at 6.81%, Intel at 6.33% and Broadcom at 6.08%. Those five positions totaled 35.85%, less than SMH’s listed top-four concentration in the cited snapshots.

Who might prefer SOXX

  • Investors seeking a large, actively traded U.S.-listed fund.
  • Investors who want exposure to both chip companies and equipment suppliers.
  • Investors who prefer more even top weights and the lowest cited expense ratio by a small margin.

SOXX is still a volatile sector fund. A lower largest-position weight does not make it a diversified-market substitute, and the portfolio remains exposed to the same industry cycle as other semiconductor ETFs.

XSD: equal-weight breadth across company sizes

How the index is built

State Street says XSD seeks to track the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index. Its modified equal-weight construction is intended to provide unconcentrated exposure across large-, mid- and small-cap companies. In practical terms, a smaller constituent receives a much larger portfolio role than it would in a conventional market-cap-weighted index.

What the October 2026 snapshot shows

XSD had 47 holdings, $2.74764 billion in assets under management and a 0.35% gross expense ratio as of October 15, 2026. The fund began on January 31, 2006. The cited issuer information does not state a single top holding’s percentage, a semiconductor-versus-equipment split or a bid/ask spread, so those values should not be inferred.

Who might prefer XSD

  • Investors who want to reduce dependence on mega-cap chip companies.
  • Investors deliberately seeking more mid-cap and small-cap participation.
  • Investors willing to accept that equal weighting can lag when a few dominant companies drive a market-cap-weighted rally.

Equal weighting also creates different rebalancing behavior from a market-cap approach. Smaller companies can have an outsized effect on returns, both positively and negatively, and may be more sensitive to financing conditions and industry downturns.

Which semiconductor ETF is most diversified?

Diversification depends on what you measure.

  • By number of holdings, XSD is broadest in the cited snapshots with 47, followed by SOXX with 30 and SMH with 26.
  • By top-stock concentration, XSD is designed to be the least dependent on mega-cap names, although the cited page does not provide its current largest weight. SOXX’s listed top five totaled 35.85%, while SMH’s listed top four totaled 40.50%.
  • By company size, XSD intentionally reaches further into mid- and small-cap stocks. SMH emphasizes liquid leaders, and SOXX sits between those approaches with a 30-stock industry portfolio.
  • By geography, SMH has the clearest stated global dimension because it includes U.S.-listed foreign companies. SOXX follows a U.S. equity index. The cited XSD snapshot does not quantify international exposure.
  • By supply-chain coverage, SOXX is the only one of the three with a cited allocation split: 75.59% semiconductor companies and 23.97% equipment companies on June 30, 2026.

There is no universal winner because each definition rewards a different construction. More holdings do not automatically mean lower risk if the companies respond to the same economic shock, and a smaller top weight does not remove sector volatility.

Risk: broad chip exposure can still be very volatile

Historical volatility example

As of September 30, 2026, iShares reported a three-year standard deviation of 37.85% and an equity beta of 2.06 for SOXX. Standard deviation measures how widely historical returns varied; beta compares historical sensitivity with the broad equity market. Neither number predicts the next period, but both illustrate that a diversified semiconductor basket can fluctuate substantially more than a broad-market fund.

Industry and policy risks

  • Supply-chain disruption: shortages, transportation problems or manufacturing interruptions can affect several holdings simultaneously.
  • Export controls and tariffs: restrictions on advanced technology or cross-border trade can change revenue opportunities and costs.
  • Geopolitical events: semiconductor production is globally interconnected, so regional conflict or policy changes can move the entire group.
  • Capital-spending cycles: chipmakers and equipment suppliers can experience sharp swings when customers accelerate or postpone factory investment.
  • Valuation concentration: when a few high-profile companies dominate investor enthusiasm, a reversal can weigh heavily on leader-focused funds.

State Street specifically warns that geopolitical events and trade-policy changes can disrupt markets. Issuer disclosures also state that principal can be lost.

How to buy a semiconductor ETF

VanEck states: “VanEck ETFs can be purchased the same way you would buy a stock—through a broker or with your advisor.” The practical process is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a brokerage account or adviser. Confirm that your account is permitted to trade U.S.-listed ETFs and review any account-level charges. No particular broker, commission schedule or geographic availability is established here.
  2. Verify the ticker and current documents. Search for SMH, SOXX or XSD, then open the latest fact sheet and prospectus. Check the current holdings, expense ratio, spread and net assets because the figures in this article are dated snapshots.
  3. Decide the portfolio role first. Determine whether the ETF is a satellite sector position alongside a diversified core, rather than assuming it covers all equity exposure.
  4. Select an order type and review the quote. Compare the displayed bid and ask, particularly when markets are moving quickly. SOXX’s cited 0.02% 30-day median spread is historical information, not a guarantee for your transaction.
  5. Confirm the trade and monitor concentration. After execution, review how the ETF changes your total exposure to large chip companies, equipment makers, countries and currencies. Recheck the issuer’s holdings when you make future purchases.

Prices fluctuate during the trading day, and an ETF’s market price can differ from its underlying net asset value. Read the fund’s risk disclosures before investing and consider whether a large sector drawdown would be tolerable for your time horizon.

Fees, spreads and what they mean for returns

The cited annual expense ratios are 0.35% for SMH, 0.33% for SOXX and 0.35% gross for XSD. The gap is narrow enough that index construction, concentration and trading costs can matter more than the headline fee for many investors.

An expense ratio is deducted from fund assets over time, reducing the fund’s net return relative to its holdings before expenses. A bid/ask spread is a trading cost: buying near the ask and selling near the bid can create an immediate difference. Only SOXX’s 0.02% 30-day median spread is stated in the cited material; spreads for SMH and XSD were not stated and should be checked in a live quote.

Assets can also affect trading conditions. The October 2026 snapshots listed SMH at $65.68 billion in total net assets, SOXX at $39.34 billion and XSD at $2.74764 billion in assets under management. Size is not a guarantee of execution quality, but it provides context alongside the current quote and trading volume.

A practical checklist before you invest

  • Is your goal exposure to semiconductors specifically, or a diversified stock-market allocation?
  • Would a 20.06% single-stock weight be acceptable if it remained at that level?
  • Do you prefer market-cap-oriented leaders, a relatively balanced 30-stock portfolio or modified equal weighting?
  • Do you want the stated international reach of U.S.-listed foreign companies, or a U.S.-index orientation?
  • Can you tolerate historical sector volatility such as SOXX’s 37.85% three-year standard deviation?
  • Have you checked the current prospectus, holdings, expense ratio and spread rather than relying on an older snapshot?
  • Does the ETF complement your existing holdings, or would it duplicate a large exposure you already own?

For a leader-heavy global approach, SMH is the most direct match. For a liquid U.S.-listed fund with the lowest cited fee and a documented mix of chip and equipment companies, SOXX is the cleaner fit. For size diversification and lower dependence on the largest names, XSD is the purpose-built option. None is guaranteed to outperform, and each should be evaluated as a volatile sector allocation rather than a complete equity portfolio.
