For most people comparing the offers below, the choice comes down to four questions: how much refundable cash can you put aside, whether you will pay an annual or monthly fee, whether rewards matter, and how the issuer handles a possible move to an unsecured card.
Best for cash back: Discover it Secured Cash Back combines a $0 annual fee with a refundable deposit starting at $49 for a credit line starting at $200. It offers 5% cash back in activated quarterly categories up to stated limits, 1% on other purchases, and first-year Cashback Match.

Best low-deposit, no-annual-fee alternative: Capital One Platinum Secured lists refundable minimum deposits of $49, $99, or $200, with each option opening at least a $200 line. It has no rewards and approval still depends on factors such as income and existing debt.
Best if you want a different application route: OpenSky’s secured cards include a regular Visa that the issuer says does not require a traditional credit check, plus Plus and Launch versions with different deposits and fees. All applications remain subject to approval.

What a secured credit card is—and what it is not
A secured credit card is a revolving credit account backed by a refundable cash deposit. The issuer holds the deposit as collateral while you use the card, and the assigned credit line is generally tied to the amount deposited and the issuer’s underwriting.
The deposit is not a payment toward purchases. You still receive a monthly statement and must pay at least the minimum by the due date. If your account terms allow a grace period, paying the statement balance in full by the due date generally avoids purchase interest. A missed payment can hurt your credit even though the issuer has a deposit.

A prepaid card uses money you load and normally does not create a traditional revolving credit account. A secured card lets you borrow up to a credit limit, reports account activity when the issuer says it does, and requires repayment.
Deposits are commonly returned when the issuer approves an upgrade to an unsecured product or when the account is closed with the balance paid in full. Neither event is automatic. An issuer can keep the account secured, decline an upgrade, or apply the deposit under the account agreement if you default.
Because payment history can help or damage your record, a secured card is a credit-building tool—not inexpensive borrowing. No offer here guarantees approval, a particular credit-score increase, or a specific graduation date.

Choose Discover for cash back when you can manage category limits
Discover’s secured card is the clearest rewards option in this group. The issuer advertises 5% cash back in rotating categories after you activate them, subject to a quarterly maximum, and 1% on other eligible purchases. First-year Cashback Match is an issuer promotion that matches the cash back earned during the first year at year-end under its terms.
The deposit can start at $49 for a $200 line, and the issuer says a credit limit may eventually be assigned anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 based on creditworthiness. The $0 annual fee makes the card easier to keep open while you establish history. Do not, however, spend extra to chase a category bonus or carry a balance: a high purchase APR can outweigh modest rewards.
The issuer says it reports to all three major bureaus. It also says a positive record may result in the deposit being returned and the account being upgraded, but it does not promise when that will happen. If you close the account and pay the balance in full, the deposit can be returned under the account terms.
Choose Capital One for a low possible deposit with no annual fee
The Platinum Secured card offers three listed minimum deposits—$49, $99 or $200. Each option opens at least a $200 credit line, while a larger deposit may increase the line up to $1,000. There is no annual fee.
This card has a 29.24% variable purchase APR and no rewards listed on the official page. That combination favors someone who expects to pay the statement balance in full and values avoiding recurring fees over earning cash back.
Rank #3
Capital One says you do not need a credit score to apply for its secured cards, but that does not mean guaranteed acceptance. Its Platinum Secured information says approval may depend on income, existing debt and other application information. It reports to all three major bureaus. Responsible use could lead to a returned deposit and an upgrade, with no fixed timetable stated on the page.
Choose OpenSky’s regular Visa if the application pathway is your priority
The regular OpenSky Secured Visa requires a $200 minimum deposit, charges $35 per year and lists a 23.89% variable purchase APR. The issuer says the deposit determines the credit limit, up to $3,000 subject to approval, and describes rewards at participating retailers with terms applying.
OpenSky says the regular Visa does not require a traditional credit check. That is a different application approach from issuers that rely heavily on a conventional score, but it is not a promise of approval: all applications remain subject to approval, and the issuer can consider information in its own process.

Choose OpenSky Plus when avoiding an annual fee is worth a larger deposit
OpenSky Plus lists a $300 minimum deposit, no annual fee and a 28.24% variable purchase APR. The higher upfront cash requirement can make sense for someone who wants the OpenSky application route but does not want the regular Visa’s $35 annual charge. Compare how long you expect to keep the account: a larger deposit is locked up while the account is open, even though it is potentially refundable.
Approach OpenSky Launch cautiously because the displayed terms need confirmation
The Launch product card shows a $150 minimum deposit, while an issuer footnote lists $100 as the minimum and a limit of up to $1,000. Confirm the exact amount on the live offer screen and in the cardmember agreement before submitting an application.
Launch charges $2 per month for the first 12 months and $3 per month beginning in year two. Those charges total $24 during the first year and $36 in each later 12-month period if the monthly fee remains unchanged, but a monthly structure is not identical to an annual fee. The listed purchase APR is 28.24% variable, and OpenSky says the card reports to all three major bureaus.

How deposits, credit limits and fees affect the real cost
Deposit is locked-up cash, not a spending budget
Only deposit money you can leave unavailable for an extended period. A $300 deposit does not mean you have paid $300 toward your first bill, and it does not protect you from late fees, interest or credit reporting if you fail to pay. Before applying, keep enough cash outside the deposit for rent, utilities, emergencies and the card’s monthly statement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCompare recurring fees over the period you expect to keep the card
A no-annual-fee card is not automatically cheaper if it requires a much larger deposit that strains your emergency savings. Conversely, a $35 annual fee can become expensive over several years if you are not receiving a benefit that matters to you. OpenSky Launch’s monthly fee illustrates why you should multiply the charge over the period you expect to hold the account rather than comparing only the first month’s cost.
APR matters most when you carry a balance
Purchase APRs in this group are variable and high enough that revolving a balance can quickly cost more than rewards. Discover’s retrieved page did not state an APR, so obtain the current disclosure before applying. Capital One lists 29.24%, OpenSky Secured Visa 23.89%, and OpenSky Plus and Launch 28.24% variable purchase APRs. These figures are not a reason to carry debt for credit-building; on-time payments and manageable balances are the relevant behaviors.
How credit reporting and an upgrade work
The cited issuers state that these products report account status to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, the three major U.S. credit bureaus. Reporting gives a payment record an opportunity to appear in each bureau’s file, but the bureaus calculate scores independently and lenders use their own criteria.
Pay every bill by the due date. A late payment can damage your record, while a secured deposit does not erase that history. Pay the statement balance in full whenever your budget permits; paying interest is not required to build credit.
An issuer may periodically review a secured account for an unsecured upgrade. If approved, the issuer may return the deposit, but the timing and eligibility rules are controlled by the issuer. You can also close the account and request the deposit back after paying the balance in full, subject to the agreement and any pending transactions.

- It can be a gift option

- Helpful in various ways
OpenSky states that, on average, its users improved their credit scores by 47 points in six months based on Q1 2025. That is issuer-reported data; the page does not provide a visible methodology, and an average is not a forecast for an individual applicant. Your starting files, payment history, utilization, other accounts and lenders’ scoring models can produce a different result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Application steps that reduce surprises
- Set a cash ceiling. Decide the largest refundable deposit you can fund without using emergency money. Include any annual or monthly fee in the budget.
- Read the current issuer disclosure. Confirm the purchase APR, late-payment charges, grace-period language, deposit rules, credit-line range and fee schedule on the live application page and agreement.
- Check the line-to-deposit relationship. A $49 deposit opening a $200 line is different from a $300 deposit for a line that may be larger. Do not assume a higher deposit guarantees approval or a particular limit.
- Review rewards restrictions. For Discover, activate each 5% category and track the quarterly cap. For OpenSky’s retailer rewards, read the participating-retailer terms. Do not value rewards you are unlikely to use.
- Assess eligibility honestly. Capital One notes that income and existing debt can affect approval; OpenSky’s alternative credit-check description still includes approval conditions; Discover says an application may be declined.
- Submit one appropriate application. Avoid applying for several cards at once simply to test approval. Choose the product whose deposit and fee structure you can sustain.
- Fund only through the issuer’s stated process. Confirm the deposit amount, when it becomes available credit and how refunds are handled. Save the agreement and confirmation page.
- Set payment controls immediately. Turn on statements and due-date alerts, schedule at least the minimum payment, and use automatic full-balance payment only if your bank balance can support it.
Using the card without undermining your credit
- Charge one or two predictable purchases you can already afford, such as a recurring bill, rather than treating the limit as extra income.
- Pay before the due date every month. If you make multiple payments, ensure the required minimum is covered by the deadline.
- Pay the statement balance in full when possible to reduce interest and prevent a small purchase from becoming long-term debt.
- Keep track of pending charges and refunds so you do not accidentally exceed the available line.
- Review each bureau file for correct account status. Dispute inaccurate information with the bureau and issuer using the procedures in the statement or bureau instructions.
- Keep the account open only while its cost and benefit make sense. Closing can reduce available revolving credit and end future reporting, so consider the consequences and wait for all transactions to post before requesting a deposit refund.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Choosing only by the smallest deposit
A $49 starting deposit is attractive, but a card with no rewards, a high APR or an unwanted fee may be a worse long-term fit than a higher-deposit no-fee product. Compare the deposit, recurring cost, reporting, rewards and upgrade policy together.
Assuming “no credit check” means guaranteed approval
OpenSky’s description of its regular Visa refers to no traditional credit check, while its terms still say applications are subject to approval. Treat alternative underwriting as a pathway, not a guarantee.

Carrying a balance to build credit
Interest is not a credit-building requirement. Carrying debt raises the cost and can increase reported balances. Use a small purchase and pay it as agreed instead.
Expecting an automatic graduation date
Issuer language about a possible upgrade is conditional. There is no universal six-month or one-year graduation rule in these offers. Ask the issuer how reviews work and keep the account in good standing while you wait.
Missing a fee-period distinction
OpenSky Launch bills monthly, while the regular OpenSky Visa and other products list annual or no annual fees. Convert the schedule to your expected holding period before deciding.
Relying on outdated promotional terms
Welcome offers tied to same-day funding can expire or change. Do not count a promotion in your decision unless it appears in the current application flow and you have read every condition.

Pre-application checklist
- Can you fund the deposit and still cover an emergency?
- Will the annual or monthly fee fit your budget for as long as you expect to keep the account?
- Have you confirmed the current APR and all fee disclosures?
- Do you understand the credit-line amount associated with the deposit you selected?
- Does the issuer state that it reports to all three major bureaus?
- Have you read when a deposit may be returned and whether an upgrade is discretionary?
- Can you pay at least the minimum by every due date and preferably the full statement balance?
- For rewards, have you checked activation, category, retailer and spending limits?
- Are you treating approval and future score changes as uncertain rather than guaranteed?
Bottom line
For a rewards-focused applicant who can manage rotating-category rules, Discover it Secured Cash Back is the strongest all-around value among these offers because it combines a $0 annual fee with cash back and a potentially low starting deposit. Capital One Platinum Secured is the simpler low-deposit, no-annual-fee choice when rewards are not important. OpenSky’s three products are worth comparing when its application pathway or fee options match your circumstances, but the Launch deposit discrepancy and monthly charges require extra verification. Whichever card you choose, the deposit is collateral, not a payment, and consistent on-time repayment—not carrying a balance—is what gives the account a chance to help your credit profile.
