They can be worthwhile if reflected glare is a recurring problem for you. Polarized lenses attenuate light and reduce glare, which may be useful around water, on bright roads or in other glare-heavy settings. The FDA describes lenses with absorbing, reflective, tinted, polarizing or photosensitizing properties as lenses that “attenuate light and reduce glare.” Whether that benefit is worth paying for depends on your activities, how comfortable the glasses fit, and your budget—not on a price tier guaranteeing protection.
#1 Best Overall
Polarization and UV protection are separate properties. Polarization reduces glare; UV blocking depends on the lens’s physical, chemical and optical properties. Choose sunglasses labeled UV400 or 100% UV protection: the FDA says these block more than 99% of UVA and UVB radiation. A polarized label alone is not a UV rating.
How to choose the right pair
Match the shape and fit to your activity
For fishing or other time near water, consider comfortable fit and coverage for long wear. For everyday use or driving, prioritize a fit you can wear consistently and a lens variant whose UV protection is stated. For active use, check how securely the frame sits, but do not treat ordinary sunglasses as impact-protective equipment. If you need prescription lenses or a foldable frame, confirm those features for the exact model and configuration rather than assuming every variant offers them.

Coverage is also relevant: the FDA says larger, wraparound-style frames may provide more UV protection because they cover more of the eye socket. Tint darkness is not a reliable substitute for a UV label; the FDA notes that lighter-tinted lenses can provide the same UV protection as dark lenses.
Verify the exact lens variant
- Find the precise model and lens configuration you plan to order, including prescription or other options where applicable.
- Look for a UV400 or 100% UV protection label or specification for that exact lens variant.
- Check whether the product is polarized if glare reduction is important to you; do not infer UV protection from polarization or lens darkness.
- Compare fit, coverage, intended use and current price on the live listing before checkout.
What polarized sunglasses do not protect against
Ordinary sunglasses are not a substitute for impact-protective eyewear in high-risk impact sports or industrial settings. The FDA also cautions that lenses meeting applicable impact-resistance requirements are not shatterproof. If an activity presents an impact hazard, use eyewear designed for that hazard rather than relying on a fashion or everyday sunglasses label.
