Keep funds with an uncertain or very near-term use in an FDIC-insured savings account or money market deposit account (MMDA); use a certificate of deposit (CD) or Treasury bill when the maturity date lines up with a known expense and you can accept less flexibility.
Do not choose from the advertised rate alone. Check whether the yield can change, whether withdrawals are restricted or penalized, what protection applies, how quickly you can get the cash, and what remains after fees and taxes.

Where should I keep my short-term savings?
Start with the spending date, not the rate. Savings accounts and MMDAs have no stated maturity, so they are generally the most practical choices when an emergency, move, tuition bill or tax payment could occur at any time. A CD locks money for a stated term and may charge an early-withdrawal penalty. A Treasury bill (T-bill) matures on a set date; it can be sold earlier, but the amount you receive before maturity depends on market conditions.
For money needed within days or for an expense whose date could move, use an insured deposit account and verify its transfer and withdrawal terms. For a bill due on a known date several weeks or months away, compare a CD or a T-bill whose maturity falls before that date with an insured savings option. A higher quoted APY or yield is not useful if a penalty, processing delay or market loss prevents you from paying on time.

How the four main choices differ
| Option | Access and term | Protection | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| FDIC-insured savings account | No fixed maturity. Withdrawals, transfers and transfer timing depend on the institution and account agreement. | Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank are covered within the applicable limit. | Variable APY, fees, minimum balance, transfer speed and the identity of the insured bank. |
| Money market deposit account (MMDA) | No designated holding period like a CD, but the account can have minimums, transaction limits or other access terms. | May be FDIC-insured when it is a deposit at an FDIC-insured bank. | APY, minimum opening balance, monthly fees, transaction rules and withdrawal methods. |
| Certificate of deposit (CD) | Funds are committed until a stated maturity. Early withdrawal usually has terms or penalties set by the bank. | An eligible CD at an FDIC-insured bank counts as an insured deposit and aggregates with other deposits in the same ownership category at that bank. | APY, maturity date, early-withdrawal penalty, minimum deposit and what happens at renewal. |
| Treasury bill | Terms range from 4 to 52 weeks. The bill pays at maturity, although it can be sold earlier. | Not FDIC-insured. It is a U.S. government obligation backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. | Auction yield, maturity alignment, reinvestment plan, sale process and federal versus state and local tax treatment. |
These are product mechanics, not a ranking of providers. Rates, fees, minimums and auction results change, so compare current offers on the same day for the same balance and holding period.
FDIC-insured savings accounts: the default for uncertain timing
When a savings account fits
A savings account is the simplest match for cash that must remain available. There is no maturity date, and the account can hold an emergency reserve or a planned payment while you wait for the exact due date. The APY is normally variable, so the bank can change it as market conditions and its pricing change. That flexibility is the trade-off for not locking the money.
Checks before opening
- Confirm that the legal institution holding the deposit is an FDIC-insured bank, rather than assuming a fintech brand itself provides coverage.
- Read the account agreement for transfer limits, cutoff times, linked-account requirements and how long an outgoing transfer takes.
- Check the minimum balance needed to earn the advertised APY and the fee charged when the balance falls below it.
- Ask whether the quoted APY is ongoing or depends on a temporary promotion or a special balance tier.
- Keep enough in an immediately accessible transaction account if a transfer from savings would not arrive by the payment deadline.
How insurance applies
FDIC coverage is automatic for eligible deposits at an insured bank. The standard amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Balances in multiple accounts at the same bank and in the same ownership category are added together; each account does not receive a separate $250,000 limit. The FDIC states, “Your deposits are automatically insured to at least $250,000 at each FDIC-insured bank.” See the FDIC deposit-insurance guidance and its explanation of ownership categories for the rules that apply to your situation.

Money market deposit accounts: liquid deposits with different terms
What an MMDA is
A money market deposit account is a bank deposit account, not a mutual fund. FDIC materials list MMDAs among covered deposit products when held at an insured bank. An MMDA has no designated holding period like a CD, but the bank may require a higher opening balance, pay different rates at different tiers, charge a monthly fee or impose transaction and transfer conditions.
What an MMDA is not
A money market mutual fund is an investment fund. FDIC lists mutual funds among products it does not insure. The similar names can cause a costly mistake: ask whether your balance is a deposit account at an FDIC-insured bank or shares of a fund held in an investment account. The distinction, including the insurance treatment, is described by the FDIC deposit-account information and its deposit-insurance overview.
Questions to ask about access
- Can you make electronic transfers, checks or debit-card payments, and are any of those methods limited?
- What balance qualifies for the stated APY, and what rate applies below that tier?
- Is there a monthly maintenance fee, and how is it waived?
- How long do withdrawals and transfers take to reach the destination account?
If the date of the expense is uncertain, an MMDA can be a useful compromise between transaction access and a savings yield. It is not automatically better than a savings account; compare the complete terms rather than the label.

Certificates of deposit: a rate in exchange for a commitment
When a CD makes sense
A CD is appropriate when you know you will not need the money until a stated future date. You deposit a principal amount for the bank’s term, and the bank quotes an APY for that term. The maturity date, not the advertising date, should drive the decision. Choose a term that ends before the expense is due, leaving time for the funds to settle and be transferred.
The cost of breaking the term
Early-withdrawal rules are set by the institution and can reduce the interest you receive; some agreements also restrict when a withdrawal is allowed. Read the penalty formula and ask whether an early withdrawal could reduce principal. If you might need part of the balance, do not place the entire amount in one CD. Keep the uncertain portion in an insured savings account or use several smaller maturities.
Renewal and maturity instructions
Find out what happens at maturity. Some CDs automatically renew for a new term if you do nothing, while others move the proceeds to a deposit account. Record the maturity date, the grace-period length if one is offered, and the instructions required to prevent an unwanted renewal. Recheck the APY before opening because a CD’s quoted rate applies to its stated term and is not a promise about future rates.
Treasury bills: fixed maturity, government credit and market pricing
Terms and purchase size
TreasuryDirect says, “We sell Treasury Bills (Bills) for terms ranging from four weeks to 52 weeks.” The listed bill terms are 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26 and 52 weeks, and the minimum purchase is $100 in $100 increments. Bills are sold at a discount or at par; the difference between the purchase amount and the face value is paid at maturity. See the TreasuryDirect Treasury-bills page for the instrument’s current terms and auction information.
Liquidity before maturity
A bill is designed to be held until its maturity date, when the Treasury pays the face value. TreasuryDirect permits bills to be sold before maturity, but a sale is market-dependent. The resale price can be above or below your purchase price, and the available amount is not guaranteed in advance. Treat a bill as less certain than a bank deposit if you may need the cash on a particular day before maturity.
Reinvestment risk
If you plan to use the proceeds for a later expense, the bill’s maturity provides a clear date. If you plan to roll the money into another bill, the next auction’s yield may be different. A sequence of maturities, sometimes called a ladder, reduces the chance that every dollar must be reinvested on one date, but it does not guarantee a future yield.

Protection distinction
Treasury bills are not FDIC-insured deposits. TreasuryDirect describes U.S. marketable securities as backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. That is a different protection framework from FDIC insurance: one is a U.S. government obligation, while the other protects eligible bank deposits up to the statutory limit.
Match the product to your cash date
| When you expect to need the money | Usually practical starting point | Why | What could change the choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any day, or within a few days | Insured savings account or MMDA | No stated maturity and no need to sell a security. | Slow transfers, minimum-balance fees or restrictive transaction terms. |
| One to three months, date uncertain | Insured savings account or MMDA | Access matters more than locking a term. | A known payment date could make a matching T-bill worth comparing. |
| One to three months, date fixed | A T-bill or CD maturing before the payment, alongside a cash buffer | The maturity can align with the expense and reduce reinvestment uncertainty. | Early access needs, settlement timing, minimums, penalties and tax differences. |
| Three to twelve months, date fixed | Compare CDs and T-bills with staggered maturities | You have time to match terms and can divide the balance among dates. | Need for flexibility, changing rates, account insurance and sale risk. |
| More than one year but still short term | A ladder of CDs or T-bills plus an insured liquid reserve | Staggered maturities create recurring access instead of one all-or-nothing date. | Future expenses, tax bracket, penalty rules and the possibility that rates change. |
Use the date you actually need cleared funds, not merely the date a bill is mailed. Leave a buffer for weekends, holidays, transfer processing and any settlement or reinvestment step.
Compare what you keep after fees and taxes
Fees and minimums
Compare products using the same principal and the same holding period. Subtract recurring account fees, one-time transfer charges and any penalty you would incur if the money were needed early. A higher headline APY can produce less cash than a lower APY with no fee when the balance is small or the holding period is short.

Interest from bank accounts, money market accounts and CDs is taxable interest under IRS guidance; see IRS Topic no. 403, Interest received. TreasuryDirect states that earnings from Treasury marketable securities are subject to federal tax but exempt from state and local taxes; the rule is summarized on its tax forms and withholding page. Your tax bracket, state and filing situation determine the after-tax result, so do not treat an APY or auction yield as an after-tax return.
A simple comparison method
- Write down the principal, start date and date the cash must be available.
- For a deposit account, estimate interest using the quoted APY for the period, then subtract account fees and applicable taxes.
- For a CD, use the APY for the exact term and subtract any early-withdrawal penalty that is realistically possible.
- For a T-bill, compare the purchase price with the face value paid at maturity, then account for federal tax and the state and local exemption.
- Check that each option leaves enough immediately accessible cash for an unexpected expense.
Rates move, so run this comparison with offers and auction results available when you are ready to act. The sources cited here do not establish a current October 2026 provider ranking or a single highest rate.
How to choose and set up the account or security
Step 1: Define the cash requirement
Write the expense, amount, due date and latest acceptable arrival date. Separate money that is truly emergency-accessible from money assigned to a known payment. If the date or amount can change, classify that portion as liquid even if its expected yield is lower.

Step 2: Set a liquidity floor
Keep a cash buffer in an insured deposit account for deductibles, repairs and timing surprises. Do not commit the entire reserve to a CD or T-bill merely because its quoted return is higher.
Step 3: Verify the legal holder and protection
For a bank product, identify the FDIC-insured bank named in the account documents and total all balances you already hold there in the same ownership category. If the combined amount could exceed $250,000, ask how ownership categories or additional insured banks affect coverage. For a T-bill, confirm that you are buying a Treasury security and understand that FDIC insurance does not apply.
Step 4: Read the access terms
Record transfer cutoff times, minimum balances, monthly fees, CD penalty language, T-bill maturity and the procedure for obtaining proceeds. A product is not liquid merely because an online dashboard displays a balance.
Step 5: Align maturities and transfers
Choose a CD or T-bill maturity that precedes the spending deadline. For multiple goals, stagger maturities rather than placing every dollar on one date. Schedule the transfer early enough to account for weekends, holidays and bank processing.
Step 6: Document the plan
Keep confirmation numbers, maturity dates, renewal instructions, tax forms and the account’s insurance information. Review the plan whenever the expense date changes or the balance approaches an insurance limit.

Confusing an MMDA with a money market mutual fund
Read the product type in the account agreement. An MMDA is a deposit account that may qualify for FDIC insurance at an insured bank; a money market mutual fund is not an FDIC-insured deposit. If the paperwork refers to fund shares, ask the provider about investment-account protections instead of assuming bank insurance.

Assuming every account at one bank gets a new insurance limit
FDIC coverage aggregates deposits in the same ownership category at the same insured bank. Add checking, savings, MMDAs and CDs before deciding that a balance is fully covered.
Locking up money needed for an uncertain event
A CD penalty or a T-bill’s market-dependent sale price can undermine an emergency reserve. Keep uncertain obligations liquid and use fixed maturities only for amounts and dates you can identify.
Using an old rate as today’s market quote
National averages and individual offers change. A historical statistic can provide context but cannot prove that a particular bank or Treasury auction currently pays the most.

What the March 2026 FDIC rates do—and do not—tell you
The FDIC’s national-rate table, with values as of March 16, 2026, reported a national savings deposit rate of 0.39% and a rate-cap-adjusted national savings rate of 1.14%. The table used a $2,500 savings-product tier. Those figures are national aggregates for that date, not current October 2026 offers, not an APY promise and not a ranking of banks. They are useful historical context only. See the FDIC National Rates and Rate Caps page for the table and its methodology.
Three practical allocation examples
Emergency reserve with no known spending date
Place the reserve in an FDIC-insured savings account or MMDA after checking transfer speed and fees. Keep enough in an immediately available transaction account for same-day needs. A CD or T-bill is unsuitable for the portion that might be required tomorrow because access could involve a penalty or a market-dependent sale.
Quarterly tax payment due on a fixed date
Keep a buffer in an insured deposit account, then compare a CD or T-bill that matures before the payment deadline. Verify the maturity proceeds, transfer timing and tax treatment. Do not choose a term that ends on the due date itself if a weekend or processing delay could make the funds late.

Separate the expected closing amount, inspection and moving reserves, and an emergency cushion. Use staggered CD or T-bill maturities for amounts tied to known milestones, while leaving the cushion in an insured liquid account. If the closing date can move, keep that portion liquid instead of relying on an early sale or CD withdrawal.
Short-term-savings checklist
- Have I written the date the money must be available and allowed a processing buffer?
- Is the product a bank deposit, a CD, a Treasury bill or a mutual fund?
- If it is a deposit, which legal bank is FDIC-insured?
- Will my combined balances in the same ownership category exceed $250,000 at that bank?
- Can the APY change, and what minimum balance or fee applies?
- What happens if I withdraw a CD early?
- If I sell a T-bill before maturity, could the market price be below my purchase price?
- How are the earnings taxed in my federal, state and local situation?
- Do the maturity and transfer dates leave enough time to pay the expense?
- Have I recorded renewal instructions, confirmations and tax documents?
The right choice is the one that preserves the required access and protection while earning a competitive net return for the exact period you can leave the money untouched. Recheck rates and terms when you act, because neither a historical average nor a current advertisement guarantees the result for your balance or your dates.
