The best place to buy gold in 2026 is the dealer that gives you the strongest like-for-like deal after premium, buyback spread, fees, delivery and reputation are checked. That may be a reputable local coin shop or an established online bullion dealer. There is no permanently “best” seller: prices, inventory and terms change, and a dated comparison of the exact coin and weight is required.

For U.S. buyers, the U.S. Mint does not operate a retail shop for its bullion coins. It distributes them through authorized purchasers, wholesalers and dealers, so buyers find American Eagle and American Buffalo bullion online or at physical coin and precious-metal shops. Treat mint distributor directories as research leads, not as endorsements or guarantees.

What “best place” means when buying physical gold

A low advertised price is not enough to identify a good purchase. Gold dealers normally quote a price above the live spot price and offer to buy the metal back below spot. The difference, together with commissions and other charges, determines how far the price must rise before you break even.

Use the same coin, weight and purity when comparing sellers. Record the spot price used for the quote, the retail premium, the dealer’s buyback price, every payment or delivery charge, and whether the coin will be shipped to you or held in a vault. Ask for the complete price and terms in writing before sending money.

Do not compare an ordinary bullion coin with a proof, rare or “semi-numismatic” coin as though they were identical investments. Bullion is priced mainly from its metal content. Numismatic value can depend on rarity, condition, age or limited mintage and may be much harder to resell at a predictable price.

How U.S. Mint bullion reaches buyers

The U.S. Mint sells its bullion coins through authorized purchasers rather than directly to the public. Those purchasers supply wholesalers, retailers, private investors and local dealers. The Mint says its bullion coins are available online and in physical stores through this distribution network.

This structure explains why an American Gold Eagle or American Buffalo can appear on many dealer sites even though the Mint is not the retail seller. A listing on an official distributor page is a starting point for your own checks; it is not a government guarantee of a dealer’s current price, inventory, customer service or financial condition.

The Perth Mint also maintains an approved U.S. distributor directory for its bullion bars and coins. Names appearing in such a directory—including A-Mark Precious Metals, Kitco Metals and Money Metals Exchange—should be treated as leads to investigate, not as a ranking or recommendation. Confirm that the business is currently listed, then compare its live quote, buyback policy and fees with other sellers.

Where you can buy gold coins and bullion

Local coin and bullion dealers

A local shop lets you speak with staff, inspect a coin and ask questions before paying. You may be able to take possession immediately and avoid shipping delays. The U.S. Mint itself points consumers toward local or national coin and precious-metal dealers.

Physical presence does not prove that a shop is trustworthy or competitively priced. Ask for a written quote for the exact product, including the dealer’s buyback price. Check the business location, years in operation, independent complaints and ratings, and whether the salesperson clearly explains commissions and cancellation rules. Retail coin dealers generally are not regulated by state or federal authorities, so a buyer must perform substantial due diligence.

Online bullion dealers

Online dealers often display live or frequently updated quotes and carry more brands, weights and inventory than a small local shop. They can be convenient when no specialist dealer is nearby. The trade-off is that you cannot inspect the coin before purchase and must understand shipping, insurance, payment, cancellation, return and buyback terms.

Calculate the delivered price rather than relying on the product-page headline. A payment surcharge, shipping charge, insurance fee or state tax can change which seller is cheapest. Confirm when the price becomes fixed, how long a quote remains valid, and what happens if the market moves before your payment clears.

Official distributor directories

Directories maintained by a mint can help you find businesses that distribute that mint’s products. They do not replace independent checks. A directory entry does not establish that the seller has the lowest premium, the narrowest spread, current stock or satisfactory service for your transaction.

Use a directory to create a shortlist, then obtain comparable quotes from several businesses. Verify the company’s legal name, address, contact information, payment instructions and written policies on delivery, storage and buybacks.

Banks and other outlets

Some banks or financial institutions may offer access to physical bullion, while others do not. Current inventory, eligibility, pricing and delivery policies vary by institution and location. Check the bank’s own product terms and a live quote before assuming it is a practical or inexpensive source.

Choose the product before comparing sellers

Standard bullion coins

For a straightforward physical-bullion purchase, use a widely recognized coin whose metal content, weight and fineness are easy to verify. The U.S. Mint’s American Eagle gold bullion coin is offered in one-ounce, one-half-ounce, one-quarter-ounce and one-tenth-ounce sizes. The American Buffalo gold bullion coin is offered in one-ounce form.

U.S. Mint bullion coin Sizes identified by the Mint What the size changes
American Eagle gold bullion 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz Total cash required and potentially the premium per ounce; obtain live quotes for the same size.
American Buffalo gold bullion 1 oz Total cash required; compare the live premium and buyback terms with other one-ounce products.

Fractional coins can reduce the amount needed for a single purchase, but a smaller coin may carry a higher premium per ounce. Do not assume a fixed difference: request current quotes for the same coin and weight.

Proof, uncirculated and collectible coins

The Mint describes proof and uncirculated numismatic coins as collector products sold at fixed prices, distinct from bullion’s metal-value basis. Collectible or “semi-numismatic” pitches can involve wider spreads and a less predictable resale market. If a salesperson emphasizes rarity, future appreciation or a limited-time opportunity, ask for the factual basis of the premium and the dealer’s written buyback price.

Compare the economics with a like-for-like worksheet

Make a separate line for each seller and use the same product specification. The following fields expose the cost that a headline price can hide.

Field to record Why it matters
Coin, weight and purity Prevents an inexpensive fractional or collectible coin from being compared with a different product.
Spot price used for the quote Shows the metal value underlying the dealer’s calculation; spot prices change during the day.
Retail premium Measures how far the purchase price is above the metal value.
Dealer buyback quote Shows what the seller would pay for the same coin if you sold it back.
Spread The gap between your purchase price and the buyback price; it is a major break-even hurdle.
Payment, shipping, insurance and tax charges Converts the quoted price into the actual delivered cost. State taxes and local rules can differ.
Delivery or vault terms Clarifies who controls the coin, when ownership transfers, what insurance covers and which storage fees apply.
Return and cancellation rules Explains whether a market move or delayed payment can leave you owing a price you no longer want.

Premium and spot: the first calculation

Spot is normally quoted per troy ounce. A dealer adds a premium for the coin, fabrication, distribution and operating costs. Compare the premium in dollars and, when useful, as a percentage of spot. Use a current spot value from the seller or a market source at the time you request the quote; do not rely on an old article’s price.

The CFTC and FINRA illustrate the arithmetic with a hypothetical example: if spot were $2,000 per troy ounce, a half-ounce coin would contain $1,000 of metal value before the dealer’s markup or “premium.” That $2,000 figure is an illustration, not a 2026 market quote.

Buyback price and spread

Ask, “What will you pay me today for this exact coin?” A dealer will normally buy below spot and sell above spot. The CFTC/FINRA advisory states: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.” Spreads vary by dealer and product, so the buyback quote is as important as the selling price.

Some sellers publish a buyback schedule; others provide a quote only after you call. Get the answer in writing, including whether the quote applies only to coins originally purchased from that dealer and whether condition, packaging or minimum quantities affect the price.

Screen the seller and authenticate the coin

Investigate the business

  • Confirm the legal business name, physical address, telephone number and payment instructions through independent sources.
  • Review complaint patterns and ratings rather than relying on testimonials displayed on the seller’s own site.
  • Ask how the salesperson is compensated and whether commissions are included in the quoted premium.
  • Check whether the salesperson claims professional credentials or a disciplinary record, and verify those claims with the issuing organization.
  • Require the retail price, fees, delivery terms and buyback policy in writing before paying.

Do not treat a mint directory listing, a prominent advertisement or a polished website as regulatory approval. The CFTC warns that retail coin dealers generally are not regulated by state or federal authorities.

Check the coin’s specifications

  • Match the stated weight, diameter, fineness and denomination with the issuing mint’s specifications.
  • Inspect design details and security features when you can handle the coin, or use a recognized third-party certification and an established seller guarantee.
  • Ask what happens if the coin fails an authenticity test and who pays for return shipping or testing.
  • Keep the invoice, product description, serial number or certification number, payment record and communications.

A written guarantee should identify the coin’s weight and precious-metal content. Packaging alone is not proof of authenticity.

Delivery, storage and insurance

Decide whether you want the coin shipped to you or held in a vault. For shipped metal, confirm the carrier, required signature, insurance limit, delivery window and process for reporting damage or a missing parcel. Verify whether insurance ends at delivery or covers the coin while it is in your possession.

For vaulted metal, establish that you own specific coins or an allocated interest rather than an unsecured promise. Ask where the metal is stored, who operates the vault, how often holdings are audited, what insurance covers, and every recurring storage or administration charge. Find out how you request withdrawal, how long delivery takes and what fees apply.

Storage can reduce the risk of keeping valuable metal at home but adds an ongoing cost and a third party. Home storage avoids a vault bill but creates security, insurance and loss risks. The right choice depends on your circumstances; compare the full cost and control terms rather than assuming either method is automatically safer.

Extra caution with gold IRAs and retirement money

Salespeople may encourage a rollover into a self-directed individual retirement account that holds precious metals. Retirement-account rules on eligible products, custody, distributions and taxation are complex. Storage, administration, insurance and transaction charges can materially raise the price at which the investment must break even.

The CFTC specifically warns about high-pressure IRA sales and costly markups. Before moving retirement funds, obtain the complete fee schedule, identify the custodian and depository, understand who is paid and when, and ask a qualified tax or financial professional about your individual tax and penalty exposure. Do not sign a rollover form during a sales call simply because a deadline or “limited offer” is emphasized.

Recognize common pressure tactics and fraud signals

Be especially careful with unsolicited email, phone, mail, advertising, video and social-media pitches. Warning signs include promises of guaranteed returns, claims that gold is risk-free, urgent instructions to act immediately, secrecy about fees, refusal to provide a buyback quote, and requests to wire money to an unrelated person or account.

Gold prices fluctuate. Unlike a dividend-paying stock or an operating business, physical metal does not produce dividends or earnings growth. Transaction, storage and insurance costs increase the return required to reach breakeven. A different relationship to stock and bond prices does not make gold low-risk.

The U.S. Mint advises: “If you are offered a bullion coin at a price below the current market price, extra scrutiny should be exercised.” A below-market offer can reflect a bait price, a counterfeit, an undisclosed condition or additional charges that appear later.

A practical buying process

  1. Define the product. Write down the exact coin, weight, purity and quantity. Decide whether your objective is metal exposure or collecting; do not let a seller switch categories without explaining the difference.
  2. Build a shortlist. Include a reputable local dealer, several established online dealers and, where relevant, businesses found through an official mint distributor directory.
  3. Request simultaneous quotes. Ask each seller for the current spot reference, retail price, premium, buyback price, payment deadline, shipping, insurance, tax and storage charges.
  4. Calculate delivered cost and spread. Add every one-time and recurring charge. Subtract the buyback quote from the all-in purchase price to see the immediate gap.
  5. Check the seller. Verify the business identity, complaint history, compensation disclosures, policies and any claimed credentials.
  6. Verify the coin terms. Match specifications with the mint, confirm authentication or a written guarantee, and understand the remedy for a failed test.
  7. Review custody. For shipment, confirm insurance and signature requirements. For storage, confirm allocation, audits, insurance, withdrawal rights and fees.
  8. Pay only after documentation. Keep the final written quote, invoice, payment record and all delivery or vault documents.

How to decide between a local and online purchase

Choose a local transaction when inspecting the coin, speaking face-to-face and taking immediate possession are important and the shop can match the total economics of online alternatives. Choose an online transaction when selection, transparent live quotes or access to a distant specialist outweigh the inability to inspect the coin before payment.

In either case, the decision should be based on the same evidence: exact product, premium, buyback spread, all-in cost, custody terms and seller record. A local address is not a substitute for a competitive quote, and a large online inventory is not proof of fair pricing.

What cannot be answered with a permanent “best dealer” list

No current, comparable nationwide survey establishes one dealer as the best for every buyer. The lowest delivered price depends on the coin, quantity, payment method, location, taxes, shipping and the market price on the day you order. Inventory and buyback quotes can change just as quickly.

Likewise, an online marketplace search does not by itself identify a safe source for an American Gold Eagle. The seller, fulfillment method, return policy and live price must be checked at the time of purchase. Apply the same premium, spread, fee and reputation tests to marketplace offers as to specialist dealers.

Key risk and tax reminders

  • Gold can lose value as well as gain value; price volatility is not removed by buying a physical coin.
  • Premiums, spreads, commissions, storage, insurance and administration costs can delay breakeven.
  • State taxes and local dealer rules differ, so verify the treatment that applies to your address and transaction.
  • Moving retirement money can trigger taxes or penalties if the transaction is not structured correctly.
  • Do not make an allocation decision based solely on a salesperson’s forecast or a limited-time promotion.

The strongest purchase record is a dated file containing the product specification, spot reference, premium, all-in price, buyback quote, fees, custody terms and the seller’s written guarantees. That documentation lets you compare offers rationally and resolve disputes if the delivered coin or price differs from what you agreed.
