What is a Specialized Investment Fund (SIF)?
SEBI’s investor FAQ, issued 22 September 2026, defines an SIF as a mutual-fund product permitted under the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 2026 to offer advanced strategies with greater portfolio flexibility, including limited unhedged short exposure through derivatives. The structure is intended to bridge regular mutual funds and Portfolio Management Services (PMS).
An SIF remains a pooled mutual-fund investment: investors own units in a scheme rather than receiving an individually managed PMS portfolio. SEBI identifies market and volatility losses, liquidity risk, derivatives and short-position risk, basis and counterparty risk, and concentration, credit or interest-rate risk as possible exposures.

How does QSIF Hybrid Long-Short invest?
Mint reports that QSIF Hybrid can combine equity, debt and money-market instruments with real-estate investment trust (REIT) and infrastructure investment trust (InvIT) exposure. Its stated framework sets the following ranges and limits:
- 25%–75% in equity and equity-related instruments.
- 25%–75% in debt and money-market instruments.
- 0%–20% in REITs and InvITs.
- Up to 25% unhedged short positions in equity and debt derivatives.
- Up to 100% hedged positions, subject to the scheme’s restrictions.
QSIF Hybrid launched on 15 October 2025. The permitted ranges are not a promise that the portfolio will remain near any particular allocation; the scheme documents govern implementation.
What should you check before calling one SIF “best”?
Use a like-for-like process before relying on a return ranking.

- Match the period. Compare identical start and end dates and confirm whether a figure is a one-time period return, since short windows can be dominated by market conditions.
- Match the category and benchmark. A hybrid-long-short strategy should be compared with similar hybrid strategies, and the relevant benchmark should be identified.
- Read the scheme documents. Check the Information Statement-cum-Investment Document (ISID), Key Information Memorandum (KIM) and Statement of Additional Information (SAI) for the objective, asset-allocation ranges, risk band, derivative permissions and short exposure.
- Check investor terms. Review fees, exit load, redemption frequency, notice period, assets under management, portfolio concentration and the length of the track record.
- Separate history from expectation. SIF360 warns that historical returns do not forecast future performance. A large lead in one six-month window can narrow or reverse.
What is the SIF investment threshold and redemption rule?
SEBI’s current FAQ sets an aggregate SIF investment threshold of ₹10 lakh at the PAN level across the strategies of one SIF. Accredited investors are exempt, and regular mutual-fund holdings do not count toward this threshold.
Hybrid SIF strategies cannot offer daily redemptions. An asset management company may impose a redemption notice period of up to 15 working days, while the applicable ISID sets the actual frequency and notice terms. Investors therefore need enough liquidity outside the SIF to avoid selling under pressure.

No. It is a historical six-month tracker result reported by Mint on 18 October 2026. The number is not an audited projection, and it does not indicate what an investor will earn in a future period; returns can be affected by the fund’s derivative positions, asset mix, market direction and volatility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are SIF returns guaranteed by SEBI?
No. SEBI regulates the product framework but does not guarantee a scheme’s return or protect investors from market losses. The fund’s own documents describe the permitted strategies and risks.
Can a retail investor buy an SIF without being accredited?
Yes, subject to the applicable investment terms. SEBI’s ₹10 lakh aggregate threshold applies at the PAN level across one SIF’s strategies; accredited investors are exempt from that threshold.
Why can’t I redeem a hybrid SIF every day?
SEBI’s FAQ says hybrid strategies cannot offer daily redemptions because their portfolios and derivative exposures may require more time to unwind. The scheme’s ISID can specify a notice period of up to 15 working days.
What documents show an SIF’s short-selling limits?
The ISID, KIM and SAI set out the strategy objective, derivative permissions, unhedged short limits, asset-allocation ranges, fees and redemption conditions. Read the version applicable to the strategy and offer period you are considering.
