There is no single best online M.B.A. for every student. Forbes Advisor’s 2025 selections ranged from Texas A&M International University, with an estimated $11,010 in tuition, to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with an estimated $125,589. The programs also differ substantially in required work experience, testing, concentrations, accreditation, scheduling and travel requirements.

This is a historical look at Forbes Advisor’s 2025 selections and estimated tuition. Forbes’ live page now covers its 2026 list, but the 2025 cost article preserves the schools and estimates from that ranking year. Forbes presented the schools as category-based selections, not necessarily as a conventional No. 1-through-No. 10 ranking.

What Forbes’ 2025 list actually means

Forbes Advisor’s list should be treated as a curated set of strong options under its methodology, not as an independently verified universal ranking of online MBA quality. Its analysis considered factors such as affordability, accreditation, graduation rates, median earnings, student experience and acceptance rates. The current Forbes education methodology describes 15 data points across credibility, affordability, student outcomes, student experience and the application process, but the current methodology should not automatically be assumed to be identical to the historical 2025 methodology.

That distinction matters because some Forbes measures are schoolwide or field-of-study measures rather than outcomes for the specific online MBA cohort. A university’s median earnings 10 years after attendance, for example, are not the same thing as the salary earned by graduates of its online MBA. Forbes’ earnings and debt tables use College Scorecard-related data that can provide context but should not be read as a program-specific salary guarantee.

Program-by-program guide

1. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: best fit for customization and value

Illinois’ iMBA requires 72 credit hours under the current catalog. Students select a primary focus area and a second focus area or electives. Available focus areas include digital marketing, global challenges, entrepreneurship and strategic innovation, business analytics, mergers and acquisitions, and healthcare innovation. The current Illinois catalog requires an undergraduate degree and at least three years of full-time professional experience. The program does not require the GMAT or GRE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why consider it: The combination of a recognizable public-university brand, broad customization and a relatively low Forbes estimate makes Illinois attractive to professionals seeking value without giving up elective choice. Forbes’ current analysis identifies Illinois as having the highest overall value score; that is Forbes’ analytical conclusion, not an objective industry-wide value ranking.

Important cautions: Seventy-two credits is more than many conventional MBA programs, so the total time and workload may be substantial even if tuition is comparatively low. A large online cohort can also provide a different networking experience from a small, residential MBA. Confirm what the current tuition estimate includes, including course, platform and student fees.

2. University of Florida: best fit for global exposure

Florida Warrington offers a 32-credit, 16-month option for students with a business undergraduate degree and a 48-credit, 24-month option for students without one. Both formats include an immersion component. Students can select a Washington, D.C.-area campus visit or a global immersion experience, according to the official program page. The program uses 10-week terms and offers multiple application deadlines each year.

Why consider it: The structured format and international or Washington immersion can add face-to-face networking and context that many online degrees lack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important cautions: This is not a no-travel program if the immersion is required. The one-year pathway is limited to students with a business background, and the global experience can add airfare, lodging and time away from work. Any salary figure associated with Florida should be identified as the relevant MBA graduate population—not assumed to be a guaranteed result for an online student.

3. Johns Hopkins Carey: best fit for experienced professionals seeking specialization

Carey’s Flexible MBA is a part-time online program requiring 54 credits and typically taking two to four years. Students can select from eight specializations, including areas such as artificial intelligence for business, business analytics, risk management and entrepreneurship. The current Johns Hopkins program page makes the GMAT and GRE optional and describes three or more years of experience as the target applicant profile.

Why consider it: The private-university brand, part-time structure and specialization choices may appeal to experienced professionals who want to apply coursework immediately to an existing career.

Important cautions: At an estimated $107,190, it is one of the most expensive options on the list. Reported Johns Hopkins earnings should be carefully labeled: determine whether a number describes all MBA graduates, Flexible MBA graduates, Carey graduates or a broader alumni population. It is not an online-MBA salary guarantee. Compare the likely career benefit with lower-cost AACSB-accredited programs before borrowing heavily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. UNC Kenan-Flagler: best fit for immersive networking

UNC’s online MBA starts with an in-person orientation and includes in-person Summits on campus or at international locations. Under UNC’s current policy, students entering in January 2026 and later must complete orientation and one Summit during the first year. The program offers four annual start dates. Applicants need at least two years of professional experience. The GMAT or GRE is not required for applicants with at least five years of full-time professional experience; applicants with less experience may seek a waiver. See the current UNC program page for the latest rules.

Why consider it: The cohort model, global experiences and alumni network can be valuable for someone who wants a high-touch online degree rather than a primarily asynchronous course sequence.

Important cautions: It is not fully online in the ordinary meaning of the phrase. The $125,589 Forbes estimate is the highest on this list, before travel and other expenses. Required attendance can also conflict with work, caregiving or military obligations. A large alumni network only creates value if the student has the time and ability to participate.

5. Baruch Zicklin: best fit for consulting-oriented applied learning

Baruch’s online MBA curriculum totals 48 credits and culminates in BUS 9601, a Business Consulting Practicum. Students work in teams on real business or nonprofit challenges. The curriculum page describes the core, flexible and elective portions of the degree, while the practicum page explains the client-project component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why consider it: The applied project and New York business network can be useful for someone who wants practice diagnosing business problems and presenting recommendations.

Important cautions: A consulting practicum is not a consulting job or a placement guarantee. Forbes’ program profile identifies at least two years of post-bachelor’s work experience. Baruch’s online materials and Forbes’ comparison do not align perfectly on how the practicum’s in-person component should be characterized, so ask the school whether current students must attend campus, whether work is synchronous and how client projects are delivered. Check the current tuition and fee schedule, including residency and online-course distinctions.

6. University of Illinois Chicago: best fit for asynchronous flexibility

UIC uses eight-week asynchronous courses, allows full- or part-time enrollment and advertises five starts per year. Students can choose concentrations in business analytics, finance, human resource management, management or marketing. The current UIC program page lists a bachelor’s degree, at least two years of professional experience and a minimum 3.0 GPA in its current admissions profile. GMAT and GRE scores are optional.

Why consider it: Multiple start dates and asynchronous courses may be easier to combine with a full-time job, rotating shifts or family responsibilities than a program with fixed weekly evening meetings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important cautions: Asynchronous does not mean easy or self-paced. Eight-week courses move quickly, and group assignments, deadlines and exams can still impose a demanding schedule. Verify current admissions and concentration requirements because these can change by intake.

7. NC State Jenkins: best fit for hands-on learning at a moderate estimated cost

NC State’s online MBA requires 40 credit hours and includes a practicum based on a real business challenge. Students must complete two three-day, credit-bearing in-person residencies in Raleigh. The curriculum covers finance and markets, value-chain analysis, managing organizations, quantitative work and electives. The program offers full-time accelerated and part-time pathways. Details are available from NC State Jenkins.

Why consider it: The applied practicum and residencies provide structured opportunities to work with classmates and solve business problems, while Forbes’ estimated tuition is well below the cost of UNC, Johns Hopkins and several other nationally known programs.

Important cautions: Two residencies mean tuition is not the full cost. Budget transportation, lodging, meals and time away from work. The residency schedule may be a serious obstacle for some students. NC State states that active-duty military students may substitute other electives for the residency requirement, but military applicants should confirm the current policy directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Texas A&M International University: best fit for low tuition and speed

TAMIU advertises a 30-credit MBA with 100% online, asynchronous coursework in seven-week sessions. It says the degree can be completed in as few as 12 months. Current online options include concentrations such as criminal justice and healthcare administration. TAMIU identifies the program as AACSB accredited. See the official TAMIU MBA page.

Why consider it: Its $11,010 Forbes estimate is the lowest on the 2025 list, and asynchronous delivery can suit students who need scheduling flexibility.

Important cautions: Completing an MBA in 12 months generally requires a heavy course load and may not be compatible with full-time employment. Lower tuition does not automatically mean weaker or stronger career outcomes. Compare alumni geography, employer relationships, career advising and recruiting access instead of evaluating the program solely by price.

9. Capitol Technology University: best fit for technical, defense and government fields

Capitol offers online, asynchronous MBA coursework in a 36- to 39-credit structure, depending on a student’s background and pathway. Specializations include aviation, aviation cybersecurity, construction safety, federal acquisition and defense contracting, and unmanned and autonomous systems. The current Capitol MBA page lists $650 per credit for fall 2025 through summer 2026 and $665 per credit for fall 2026 through summer 2027, before additional fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why consider it: These concentrations are unusually targeted to defense, aviation, cybersecurity, government procurement and technical operations. That can matter more than general brand prestige for someone already working in one of those sectors.

Important cautions: Forbes’ current comparison lists no programmatic business accreditation for Capitol, although the university is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Applicants should distinguish those two types of accreditation and confirm the status in the relevant accreditor directory. A specialized MBA may be less useful for a general consulting, investment-banking or broad corporate-recruiting target.

10. Spring Arbor University: best fit for a Christian-values curriculum

Spring Arbor describes its MBA as 100% online, with a curriculum emphasizing service, stewardship, ethical decision-making and Christian values. The program does not require the GMAT or GRE. Its current page lists tuition of $649 per credit. Spring Arbor is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, while Forbes’ current comparison lists no programmatic business accreditation. Review the official Spring Arbor MBA page for current requirements.

Why consider it: For students who specifically want faith-integrated coursework and an explicitly Christian institutional mission, this is a meaningful fit distinction.

Important cautions: Religious integration is not a generic quality measure. Review required faith-based coursework, institutional expectations, alumni outcomes and employer recognition. Do not substitute the current $649-per-credit figure for Forbes’ 2025 estimated total without labeling the date and calculating the required credits and fees.

How other 2025 rankings differed

Forbes was not the only organization evaluating online MBA programs in 2025, and the results were materially different because the organizations used different data and definitions of quality.

Ranking Leading programs or schools What the ranking emphasizes
Forbes Advisor 2025 Its 10 selections included Illinois, Florida, Johns Hopkins, UNC, Baruch, UIC, NC State, TAMIU, Capitol Technology and Spring Arbor Affordability, accreditation, schoolwide outcomes, student experience, access and related institutional data; category-based selections rather than a confirmed ordinal league table
U.S. News 2025 Indiana Kelley; UNC Kenan-Flagler; Carnegie Mellon Tepper; Florida Warrington and Washington Foster tied; Michigan Ross; Arizona State Carey, Arizona Eller, Kansas and USC Marshall tied Its online MBA ranking model, covering 355 programs according to Poets&Quants’ report on the release
Poets&Quants 2025 Texas at Dallas Jindal; Michigan Ross and Indiana Kelley tied; Washington Foster; Rice Jones; USC Marshall; Carnegie Mellon Tepper; Jack Welch; Hofstra Zarb; Florida Warrington Program-level admissions standards, career outcomes, student experience and other MBA-specific inputs
Princeton Review 2025 Indiana Kelley; UNC Kenan-Flagler; Michigan Ross; Jack Welch; Rice; Iowa Tippie; Nebraska–Lincoln; Babson; Utah Eccles; South Florida Muma Administrator surveys and surveys of more than 11,900 online MBA students, including academic experience, faculty, technology, career services, immersion and satisfaction

The disagreement is informative. Forbes is closer to a broad institutional affordability-and-outcomes assessment. U.S. News, Poets&Quants and Princeton Review place more emphasis on the online MBA experience, admissions, career outcomes, student satisfaction or program reputation. A school absent from Forbes’ list is not necessarily a weak MBA, and a Forbes selection is not automatically the strongest choice for career switching.

Which program is best for your goal?

For advancing in your current career

Prioritize part-time pacing, employer tuition assistance, a relevant concentration, career coaching and a low travel burden. Illinois, UIC, Johns Hopkins and TAMIU may fit different versions of this need. Spring Arbor may also fit when its mission aligns with the student and employer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The financial test is straightforward: Can you use the degree in your existing role, receive reimbursement, avoid leaving your job and finish without taking on unaffordable debt? An MBA is often easier to justify for advancement when the employer helps pay and the student can apply the material immediately.

For changing careers

Brand name alone is not enough. Look for employer recruiting, alumni in the target industry, career-services access, experiential projects, internships or applied work and a network in the geography where you want to work. UNC, Johns Hopkins, Florida and the prominent programs appearing in U.S. News and Poets&Quants—such as Kelley, Ross, Tepper, Washington Foster, Rice and USC Marshall—may deserve comparison.

A fully asynchronous, low-cost program can be excellent for advancement but may offer less structured recruiting for someone trying to move from one industry or function to another. Ask each school for online-MBA-specific employment and career-progression data.

For consulting

Baruch’s consulting practicum is directly relevant because students work on real business or nonprofit challenges. Also compare case competitions, consulting employer relationships, alumni destinations and career coaching. A practicum demonstrates experience; it does not guarantee consulting placement.

For technology, defense or government

Capitol’s technical and defense concentrations are the most obvious specialized fit. Other relevant possibilities include Illinois business analytics, Johns Hopkins artificial intelligence for business or business analytics, NC State quantitative coursework and UIC business analytics. The right choice depends on whether you need a broad management credential or technical depth that a specialized master’s degree might provide more directly.

For global business

Florida’s immersion choices, international classmates and global experience may be attractive. But the global option involves travel, so include airfare, lodging, meals, time away from work and passport or visa logistics in the budget. International students should also verify that the delivery format fits their immigration and employment plans.

Fully online does not always mean no travel

Before applying, ask the admissions office to identify every in-person obligation in writing. An online MBA may contain live online lectures but still require an orientation, residency, practicum, international trip, leadership summit or proctored activity.

  • Illinois: Current comparison materials list no required in-person attendance.
  • Florida: Includes a required immersion component; students choose among an area visit or global experience.
  • Johns Hopkins: Described as a flexible part-time online MBA; verify whether any optional events carry costs or attendance expectations.
  • UNC: Includes in-person orientation and Summits. For January 2026 entrants and later, orientation and one first-year Summit are required under the current policy.
  • Baruch: Confirm how the consulting practicum is delivered and whether any current version requires campus attendance.
  • UIC: Uses asynchronous online courses; no routine campus attendance is identified in the supplied current information.
  • NC State: Requires two three-day, credit-bearing Raleigh residencies, plus an applied practicum.
  • TAMIU: Advertises 100% online, asynchronous coursework.
  • Capitol Technology: Advertises online and asynchronous coursework.
  • Spring Arbor: Advertises a 100% online MBA.

For a working parent, deployed military member or international student, the travel distinction can matter more than a small ranking difference.

What an online MBA really costs

Tuition is only the starting point

Forbes’ 2025 estimates run from $11,010 to $125,589, a spread of about $114,579. But those numbers are not perfectly comparable. They may use different residency assumptions, credit requirements and fee policies, and they do not necessarily include travel or technology costs.

Build a personal cost estimate that includes:

  • Tuition for every required credit;
  • Mandatory university, technology, platform and graduation fees;
  • Books, software, calculator or exam-proctoring charges;
  • Application and transcript fees;
  • Prerequisite or foundation courses;
  • Transportation, lodging and meals for residencies, Summits or immersions;
  • Lost wages, reduced overtime or missed promotion opportunities;
  • Child care or other family-care costs;
  • Loan origination fees and interest;
  • Employer reimbursement, scholarships, military benefits and tax effects.

Do not multiply a per-credit tuition rate without checking the required credits and fees. Capitol, for example, lists $650 per credit for fall 2025 through summer 2026 and $665 per credit for fall 2026 through summer 2027. Baruch’s fee schedule distinguishes tuition and other charges by circumstances such as residency and online status.

Compare the cost against the likely use of the degree

A $100,000 MBA might be reasonable for a professional moving into a higher-paying role with substantial employer support. It may be a poor financial decision for someone borrowing the full amount to pursue a career switch without access to recruiting or a realistic target role.

Salary divided by tuition is not a complete return-on-investment calculation. It ignores taxes, loan interest, foregone earnings, prior work experience, career growth that would have happened without the MBA and the risk that the degree will not produce a promotion or switch. Employer salary surveys, such as the 2025 GMAC Corporate Recruiters Survey, report employer expectations and projections—not guaranteed salaries for a particular graduate.

Accreditation: what to verify

Separate institutional accreditation from programmatic business accreditation:

  • Institutional accreditation evaluates the university as a whole.
  • Programmatic accreditation evaluates a business school or business program’s mission, faculty, curriculum, learning outcomes and continuous improvement.

AACSB describes its accreditation as a voluntary external review. ACBSP and IACBE are other recognized business accreditors. Accreditation is a useful quality and transferability signal, but it does not prove a particular salary, recruiting result or personal fit.

Current Forbes profiles identify AACSB accreditation for Illinois, Florida, Johns Hopkins, UNC, Baruch, UIC, NC State and TAMIU. Forbes’ current comparison lists no programmatic accreditation for Capitol Technology or Spring Arbor, although both have institutional accreditation identified in the supplied information. Verify the current status through the AACSB directory and the university’s own accreditation page before enrolling. Historical accreditation status for 2025 should not be inferred solely from a current aggregator page.

Admissions barriers and test policies

Most applicants should expect some combination of a bachelor’s degree, transcripts, résumé or CV, essays, recommendations, an application fee and possibly an interview. Professional experience, quantitative preparation and GPA can matter even when an admissions test is not required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Illinois: Current catalog lists three years of full-time professional experience; GMAT and GRE are not required.
  • Florida: One-year pathway for business majors and two-year pathway for students without a business undergraduate degree. Confirm the current testing policy with admissions.
  • Johns Hopkins: GMAT and GRE are optional; the current page describes three or more years of experience as the target profile.
  • UNC: Requires at least two years of professional experience. Applicants with at least five years of full-time experience do not need GMAT or GRE scores; applicants with less experience may seek a waiver.
  • Baruch: Forbes’ program profile identifies at least two years of post-bachelor’s work experience. Confirm current GPA and test requirements.
  • UIC: Current profile lists a bachelor’s degree, two years of professional experience and a minimum 3.0 GPA; GMAT and GRE are optional.
  • NC State: Forbes’ current profile indicates no GMAT or GRE requirement. Confirm the current admissions checklist.
  • TAMIU, Capitol Technology and Spring Arbor: Their online formats and test policies may be more accessible, but applicants should verify current GPA, experience, prerequisite and documentation requirements directly.

No GMAT or GRE requirement does not mean no selectivity. Schools can still evaluate academic performance, quantitative readiness, leadership, work history, recommendations, essays and interviews. Use terms such as test-optional or waiver available accurately; do not assume they mean easy admission.

When an online MBA may not be the right degree

An MBA is broad by design. It can be useful for management, leadership, finance, marketing, operations and general business advancement, but it is not automatically the best graduate degree for every goal.

Consider a specialized master’s degree or certificate if your target is primarily data analytics, accounting, supply-chain operations, healthcare administration, finance or another technical function. A Master of Management or early-career business degree may be more appropriate for someone with little or no professional experience. A traditional full-time MBA or deferred MBA pathway may provide stronger internship and recruiting access for a major career switch.

An executive MBA is a different product as well. It is generally designed for more experienced managers and often uses a cohort, residency or hybrid schedule. A part-time online MBA is usually more flexible, but may provide less concentrated face-to-face networking. Compare the delivery model—not merely the degree title.

Special considerations for international and military students

International students

Confirm whether the program’s online format is compatible with the visa or immigration status you want, whether online study counts toward your intended requirements and whether the degree is recognized in your home country. Also check time-zone demands, required U.S. travel, international immersion logistics and whether the school reports online graduates separately from campus students. Immigration rules are highly fact-specific and should be confirmed through current official sources, not an MBA ranking article.

Military students

Compare tuition assistance, military benefits, transfer-credit rules, deployment leave and residency flexibility. A program requiring travel may still be affordable if benefits cover the cost or the school offers an alternative. NC State specifically states that active-duty military students may substitute other electives for its residency requirement; confirm the current policy and documentation requirements before relying on it.

A practical application checklist

Before submitting an application, ask each school these questions:

  1. What is the current tuition per credit and the estimated total for my residency status?
  2. Which fees, books, software, prerequisites and technology charges are excluded?
  3. How many credits are actually required for my academic background?
  4. Are orientation, residencies, Summits, immersions or practicums mandatory?
  5. How much travel is required, when does it occur and what did recent students spend?
  6. Are classes synchronous, asynchronous or mixed? Are live sessions recorded?
  7. How much group work is required, and how are students in different time zones accommodated?
  8. What are the current GPA, work-experience and GMAT/GRE requirements for my applicant profile?
  9. Is the business school or MBA program currently AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE accredited?
  10. Are employment, salary and promotion outcomes reported specifically for this online MBA?
  11. Which employers recruit online MBA students, and how often do they recruit virtually?
  12. Where do recent graduates live and work?
  13. Can I pause enrollment for military deployment, health or family reasons?
  14. What are the transfer-credit rules, refund policy and maximum time to completion?

Bottom line for prospective students

Forbes Advisor’s 2025 selections provide a useful starting point, especially for comparing price, format and institutional features. They do not settle the question of which online MBA is best. Illinois is a strong value-and-customization candidate; Florida offers structured global exposure; Johns Hopkins offers an expensive specialization-focused option; UNC emphasizes immersive networking; Baruch brings a consulting practicum; UIC emphasizes asynchronous flexibility; NC State combines residencies with applied learning; TAMIU prioritizes low tuition and speed; Capitol targets technical and defense fields; and Spring Arbor integrates Christian values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The financially sound choice is the program that matches your career goal, schedule and debt capacity—not simply the one with the highest ranking or the lowest advertised tuition. Verify current price, travel obligations, accreditation and online-MBA-specific outcomes before enrolling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Forbes’ 2025 online MBA list ranked from No. 1 to No. 10?

The available Forbes Advisor 2025 material presents 10 category-based selections rather than confirming a conventional ordinal ranking. Treat the schools as featured options and compare them by career goal, cost, flexibility, accreditation and outcomes.

Which Forbes 2025 online MBA was the cheapest?

Texas A&M International University had the lowest Forbes 2025 estimated tuition at $11,010. That estimate is not necessarily the current total cost and may exclude fees, books, technology, prerequisites and other expenses.

Are all of the Forbes 2025 online MBA programs fully online?

No. Florida includes an immersion component, UNC requires in-person orientation and Summits under its current policy, and NC State requires two three-day Raleigh residencies. Baruch’s consulting practicum should be verified directly because available descriptions do not characterize its attendance requirements identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does no GMAT or GRE requirement mean admission is easy?

No. Test-free admissions can still be selective. Schools may evaluate GPA, quantitative preparation, professional experience, leadership, essays, recommendations and interviews.

Are the salary figures in online MBA rankings guaranteed?

No. Ranking salary figures may describe schoolwide alumni, a broader MBA population or field-of-study earnings rather than graduates of the specific online MBA. Employer surveys generally report projections, not guaranteed individual salaries.

The Bottom Line

Choose by fit, not by label. The best online MBA is the one whose total cost, travel requirements, schedule, accreditation and career support match your intended outcome. Use Forbes’ 2025 list as a shortlist, then verify current program details and online-MBA-specific outcomes before taking on debt.
