There is no permanently best sector to add outside technology. The most useful diversifiers are Health Care, Consumer Staples, Utilities, Industrials, Financials, Energy, Materials and Real Estate, selected according to the technology concentration you already own, your time horizon, income needs and sensitivity to economic growth, inflation, interest rates and commodities.
A diversified allocation usually combines defensive sectors with a smaller set of cyclical or real-asset exposures. Sector funds make implementation straightforward, but they remain concentrated portfolios: companies in one sector can still fall together. Use current holdings, fees, valuation, tax treatment and prospectus disclosures before investing.

Why “best” depends on what your portfolio lacks
Sector leadership rotates. A sector that outperformed during an inflationary period can lag when inflation falls; a defensive group that held up in a recession can trail during a strong expansion. Correlations also move rather than staying fixed. MSCI found that, over the two decades ending in May 2024, most U.S. sectors had low performance correlations with one another. That supports combining less-correlated sectors, but it does not promise that any sector will rise when technology falls.

Start by identifying whether your existing portfolio is dominated by high-growth, long-duration technology companies, broad-market funds with large technology weights, or both. Then add exposures whose revenues and valuations respond differently to growth expectations, interest rates, inflation and commodity prices.
The eight non-technology sectors and their portfolio jobs
| Sector | Typical portfolio role | Main return drivers | Important risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health Care | Defensive demand with innovation exposure | Medical utilization, new treatments, demographics and research productivity | Regulation, reimbursement, drug-development failures and high valuations |
| Consumer Staples | Defensive consumption and potential income | Recurring purchases, brand strength, pricing power and volume growth | Input costs, private-label competition and slower long-term growth |
| Utilities | Defensive, income-oriented and rate-sensitive exposure | Regulated returns, electricity and water demand, infrastructure investment | Leverage, refinancing costs, regulation and changing power markets |
| Industrials | Cyclical growth and capital-spending exposure | Manufacturing, infrastructure, transportation, aerospace and business investment | Recession, order cancellations, project delays and input-cost pressure |
| Financials | Credit, lending and economic-growth exposure | Net interest margins, loan growth, capital markets, insurance pricing and credit quality | Credit losses, yield-curve shifts, regulation, liquidity and economic weakness |
| Energy | Commodity and inflation sensitivity | Oil and gas prices, production volumes, refining margins and cash returns | Commodity volatility, production costs, policy and energy-transition risk |
| Materials | Commodity, manufacturing and inflation sensitivity | Metals, chemicals, packaging and building-material demand | Global industrial slowdown, energy costs, China exposure and commodity cycles |
| Real Estate | Property income and real-asset exposure | Occupancy, rents, property values and development or infrastructure demand | Interest rates, refinancing, vacancies, local markets and property valuations |
Health Care
Health Care combines relatively persistent demand for medical services with businesses exposed to innovation. People generally continue seeking treatment, medicines and essential procedures through slowdowns, which can make the sector less tied to the business cycle than technology or Industrials. That defensive quality is not uniform: elective procedures, biotechnology companies and providers with weak reimbursement can be economically or financially sensitive.
Assess patent expiry, research pipelines, government pricing rules, insurer and hospital reimbursement, and the proportion of revenue coming from discretionary services. Health Care can diversify a technology-heavy portfolio without abandoning growth, but a high valuation can offset the benefit of steady demand.
Consumer Staples
Staples companies sell food, beverages, household products and other necessities. Recurring purchases can support revenue when consumers cut discretionary spending. Large brands may pass some input-cost increases to customers, although pricing can reduce volumes and invite private-label competition.
This sector often suits investors seeking a defensive anchor or dividends, but “defensive” does not mean risk-free. A highly valued staples fund can decline when interest rates rise, and weaker brands may lose market share during periods of inflation.
Utilities
Regulated electric, gas and water businesses typically earn allowed returns on an approved asset base. That structure can make cash flows steadier than those of economically sensitive industries. Utilities also offer income potential and may benefit from long-term grid, transmission and generation investment.
The trade-off is leverage and rate sensitivity. Utilities often finance large capital programs with debt, so refinancing becomes more expensive when rates rise. Their bond-like characteristics can cause share prices to fall even when electricity demand is stable. Check debt maturities, regulatory decisions, capital spending and dividend coverage.
Recommended Free Tools
Industrials
Industrials provide exposure to manufacturing, transportation, infrastructure, aerospace, defense and business equipment. Their earnings can rise when companies increase capital spending or governments fund infrastructure, making the sector a useful counterweight to a portfolio concentrated in consumer-facing technology.
Because orders and inventories respond to the economic cycle, Industrials are generally more volatile than Staples or Utilities. Review backlog quality, end-market concentration, fixed-cost leverage, supplier constraints and the ability to pass through labor and materials costs.

Financials
Financial companies participate in lending, payments, capital markets, property and casualty insurance and asset management. They can benefit from healthy employment, loan growth and profitable underwriting, giving a technology-heavy portfolio exposure to a different economic engine.
Financial results depend on credit losses, funding costs and the yield curve. Banks can suffer when borrowers default or deposits reprice faster than loans; insurers face catastrophe losses and reserve uncertainty. Regulation, capital requirements and liquidity conditions can change quickly, so inspect a fund’s mix of banks, insurers, brokers and diversified financial companies rather than treating the sector as one uniform bet.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Energy
Energy is the clearest listed-equity exposure to oil and gas prices, production economics and inflation surprises. When commodity prices rise, cash flow can increase rapidly; when prices fall, dividends, capital spending and valuations can contract. Energy can therefore diversify a growth-heavy portfolio whose earnings are hurt by higher inflation, but it introduces substantial commodity and policy risk.
Compare integrated producers, exploration companies, refiners, equipment suppliers and pipelines. Their sensitivities differ. Examine balance-sheet leverage, break-even prices, reserve life, hedging, capital-return policy and exposure to changing emissions rules and energy demand.
Materials
Materials companies produce metals, chemicals, packaging, construction products and other industrial inputs. Their results reflect manufacturing, construction and global growth, while commodity pricing can provide some inflation sensitivity.
The sector is cyclical and often exposed to energy costs and overseas demand. A materials allocation should be sized with the possibility of sharp earnings swings. Look at product mix, geographic sales, customer concentration and whether a company is a price taker or has differentiated products.

Real Estate companies and real-estate investment trusts can provide rental income and exposure to property values, infrastructure and specialized facilities. Cash flows may be less correlated with technology earnings, but property is not automatically defensive.
Rates affect both financing costs and the valuation investors assign to rental cash flows. Occupancy, lease duration, tenant credit, refinancing schedules and local supply determine results. Distinguish property types—such as apartments, offices, warehouses, data facilities, health-care properties and retail—because their demand drivers differ substantially.
Six tests for comparing sectors
1. Economic sensitivity
Classify each candidate as defensive, cyclical or mixed. Consumer Staples, Utilities and much of Health Care generally have steadier demand during slowdowns. Industrials, Financials, Materials and Energy depend more on growth, capital spending or commodities. Real Estate varies by property type and financing structure.

A portfolio built entirely from defensive sectors may reduce recession sensitivity but sacrifice participation in a recovery. A portfolio built entirely from cyclical sectors can remain vulnerable to one economic shock. Combining both is usually more robust than choosing a single label.
2. Inflation and interest-rate exposure
Ask what happens if inflation stays high, falls rapidly, or returns unexpectedly. Energy and Materials have direct commodity links; Real Estate and Utilities own or finance long-lived assets but can behave like long-duration income investments when rates rise. Financials may benefit from some higher-rate environments but can suffer if rates trigger defaults or funding stress.
Read the fund’s holdings and debt exposure rather than inferring sensitivity from the sector name alone.
3. Correlation and volatility
Historical correlation can identify different return patterns, but it is not a permanent property. During market crises, correlations often rise as investors sell broadly. Compare rolling correlations, drawdowns and volatility over several periods instead of relying on one favorable interval.
4. Income and valuation
Dividend yield is only one input. Check payout ratios, free-cash-flow coverage, balance-sheet debt and the history of dividend changes. Compare earnings or cash-flow multiples with the sector’s own history and realistic growth assumptions. A low multiple can reflect deteriorating fundamentals rather than a bargain.
5. Concentration and overlap
Look through every fund to the company level. Two funds with different sector labels can own the same mega-cap companies, semiconductor suppliers, cloud infrastructure providers or utilities serving data centers. A “non-tech” fund can also contain technology-like exposure through communications, equipment or infrastructure businesses. Use a holdings spreadsheet to calculate each company’s total portfolio weight.
6. Geography and currency
International sector funds can broaden exposure beyond U.S. companies and add different economic cycles. They also introduce currency movements, foreign regulation, political risk, withholding taxes and country concentration. Decide whether the diversification benefit is worth those risks and whether the fund hedges currency.
How to build a non-technology allocation
Step 1: Measure the technology concentration you already own
- List every stock, mutual fund and exchange-traded fund in the portfolio.
- Use each fund’s latest holdings to estimate your indirect technology exposure.
- Identify whether your largest risk is valuation and long-duration growth, a specific company, U.S. mega-cap concentration or dependence on one economic scenario.
- Set a target range for technology rather than trying to predict the exact top or bottom.
Step 2: Choose a defensive anchor if stability is the priority
Investors with a short-to-medium horizon, high withdrawal needs or low tolerance for drawdowns may start with a mix of Consumer Staples, Utilities and Health Care. These sectors are described as non-cyclical or defensive by sector-fund research, but none guarantees protection in a falling market.
Step 3: Add cyclical exposure for balance
Industrials and Financials can add participation in manufacturing, infrastructure, lending and employment growth. They may complement a defensive anchor, but their earnings can weaken together during a recession. Size them according to how much volatility and economic sensitivity you can accept.

Step 4: Decide whether you need inflation or commodity exposure
Energy and Materials can respond differently from technology when commodity prices and inflation rise. Their volatility is high, so treat them as targeted exposures rather than automatic core holdings. Real Estate can add real-asset income, but its rate and refinancing sensitivity must fit your interest-rate outlook and cash-flow needs.
Step 5: Set guardrails and rebalance
Write a maximum weight for any one sector, a maximum weight for any single company and a schedule for reviewing overlap. Rebalance at a calendar interval or when a holding moves outside a pre-set band. A rule-based process reduces the temptation to chase the latest outperformer.
Using ETFs and mutual funds
Sector ETFs and mutual funds are the clearest implementation vehicles. They provide targeted exposure without requiring you to select individual companies. Fidelity describes sector funds as tools for targeted exposure, growth, diversification and risk management. Sector-fund providers list ETFs for all 11 GICS sectors, including these non-technology examples:
| Sector | Example ticker used in sector-fund listings | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Staples | XLP | Holdings, expense ratio, dividend policy and consumer-company concentration |
| Energy | XLE | Oil and gas mix, integrated versus exploration exposure and commodity sensitivity |
| Financials | XLF | Bank, insurer and capital-markets weights; credit and regulatory exposure |
| Health Care | XLV | Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, provider and equipment weights |
| Industrials | XLI | Transportation, defense, machinery and infrastructure exposure |
| Materials | XLB | Chemicals, metals, packaging and geographic sales |
| Real Estate | XLRE | Property types, debt maturities, occupancy and interest-rate sensitivity |
| Utilities | XLU | Regulated versus merchant operations, leverage and capital spending |
These tickers are examples for research, not personalized recommendations. Before investing, read the prospectus and check the current expense ratio, bid-ask spread, assets, holdings, turnover, distribution schedule, tax treatment and liquidity. Mutual funds may offer automatic contributions and different trading mechanics; ETFs trade intraday and can be more tax-efficient in some accounts, but the result depends on the specific fund and account.

What different market scenarios can mean
Technology sell-off caused by valuation compression
Health Care, Staples and Utilities may have different earnings drivers and can reduce reliance on technology valuations. They can still decline if investors sell the whole market or if their own valuations are stretched.
Recession and falling business investment
Staples and essential Health Care demand may be steadier, while Industrials, Materials and some Financials face weaker orders, credit and construction. Energy can fall if recession reduces fuel demand.
Persistent inflation or an energy shock
Energy and Materials may benefit from higher commodity prices, although operating costs and policy responses can offset gains. Utilities and Real Estate face pressure from higher financing costs, while Financials have mixed effects depending on loan pricing and credit quality.
Falling interest rates and economic recovery
Industrials, Financials and selected Real Estate companies may benefit from improving growth, easier financing or renewed capital spending. Defensive sectors may continue to perform, but their relative advantage can narrow as investors favor cyclical earnings.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying last year’s winner: Recent returns do not establish a durable leadership pattern. Use valuation, fundamentals and portfolio role.
- Assuming defensive means guaranteed downside protection: Sector funds can lose value, and correlations can rise in a crisis.
- Ignoring overlap: Review underlying companies across all funds, including broad-market holdings.
- Using yield as a safety test: An unusually high yield can signal a falling share price or an unsustainable payout.
- Underestimating rates: Utilities and Real Estate can be rate-sensitive even when their operating demand is stable.
- Treating commodities as a hedge in every period: Energy and Materials can suffer prolonged price declines and large earnings swings.
- Overconcentrating in one country: International diversification adds currency and political risk that must be measured, not ignored.
- Forgetting taxes and trading costs: Fund distributions, realized gains, spreads and account type affect the result after fees.
What the available performance figures do—and do not—show
Vanguard calculations using MSCI indexes and Bloomberg data show that $100 invested in U.S. stocks grew to $334 by the end of 2024, compared with $160 for a comparable non-U.S.-stock investment. The reported annualized returns were 13% and 5%, respectively. Those figures describe a historical period and do not prove that U.S. or technology-heavy exposure will lead in the future; they do show why geographic and sector diversification can lag for long stretches and still serve a risk-management purpose.

Fund fees, taxes, tracking differences and holdings can produce different investor outcomes.
A practical review checklist
- What technology weight remains after adding the new fund?
- Which economic factor—growth, inflation, rates or commodities—drives the proposed sector?
- How did the sector behave during more than one market regime?
- Are dividends covered by recurring cash flow?
- How much debt and refinancing risk do the underlying companies carry?
- Does the fund duplicate companies already owned?
- What are the current fee, spread, turnover, distribution and tax characteristics?
- Does the allocation fit the date when the money will be needed?
FAQ
Is there one best ETF for non-technology diversification?
No. The appropriate fund depends on which exposure is missing—defensive demand, cyclical growth, income, inflation sensitivity or geographic breadth. Compare the fund’s holdings and costs with your existing portfolio instead of choosing by ticker alone.
Should I replace technology entirely?
Usually, diversification means reducing dependence on one sector, not eliminating it. Technology can remain part of a long-term allocation while other sectors supply different earnings and valuation drivers.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAre defensive sectors suitable for short-term cash needs?
They are still stock-market investments and can decline. Money needed on a fixed near-term date generally requires an asset allocation decision beyond sector selection.
How often should sector weights be reviewed?
Review holdings, overlap, valuation and your personal objectives at least when your portfolio, tax situation or time horizon changes. Rebalance using pre-set bands or a schedule rather than reacting to headlines.
Do international sector funds always diversify a U.S. portfolio?
They can add countries and currencies, but they also add political, regulatory, tax and currency risks. Check the fund’s country weights and whether currency is hedged before deciding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there one best ETF for non-technology diversification?
No. The right fund depends on whether you need defensive demand, cyclical growth, income, inflation sensitivity or geographic breadth. Compare current holdings and costs with your existing portfolio.
Should I replace technology entirely?
Diversification generally means reducing dependence on one sector, not eliminating technology. Keep the allocation consistent with your time horizon and risk tolerance.
Are defensive sectors suitable for short-term cash needs?
No stock sector guarantees stability. Money needed on a fixed near-term date requires a broader asset-allocation decision.
How often should sector weights be reviewed?
Review when your goals, tax situation or holdings change, and rebalance on a pre-set schedule or within defined bands rather than reacting to headlines.
Do international sector funds always diversify a U.S. portfolio?
They may add countries and currencies, but they also introduce political, regulatory, tax and currency risks. Check country weights and currency-hedging policy.
The Bottom Line
The strongest non-technology diversification is usually a deliberate mix, not a single “best” sector: combine defensive demand from Health Care, Consumer Staples or Utilities with carefully sized exposure to Industrials, Financials, Energy, Materials or Real Estate. Check correlations, overlap, valuation, income quality, rates, commodities, geography and costs, then rebalance by rule.
