Best Netflix Alternatives for Movies, TV Shows, and Documentaries (2026)

The best Netflix alternative depends on what you watch. Choose Max for HBO-associated prestige series, Warner Bros. films and documentaries; Prime Video for a broad catalog with rent-or-buy access; Disney+ for family and franchise viewing; Hulu for current-season television where it operates; Apple TV+ for a compact originals-first library; Paramount+ for CBS, Showtime-related programming and selected sports; Peacock for NBC and Bravo shows; Tubi for free, ad-supported streaming; and Kanopy or another library service for documentaries and independent films when your institution participates.

No service duplicates Netflix’s combination of originals, profiles, downloads, device support and broad, mostly ad-free viewing. The practical choice is the service—or small combination of services—that matches your household’s priorities, budget and country.

Quick picks: which Netflix alternative fits you?

Service Best for What distinguishes it Main compromise
Max Prestige television, major films and documentaries HBO-associated series, Warner Bros. movies and high-profile scripted programming Its catalog and plan features vary by market; current-season broadcast television is not its core strength
Prime Video Households wanting breadth and flexibility Included streaming titles combined with rent-or-buy access and optional channels The catalog mixes included, rental and add-on content, so not every title is covered by one subscription
Disney+ Families and franchise fans Family-oriented library and major franchise collections It is less suitable as a sole service for viewers seeking every genre or current-season general television
Hulu Current-season television Recent episodes and television programming in territories where Hulu operates Availability, catalog and plan structure depend heavily on country
Apple TV+ Original series and films A focused catalog built around exclusive originals Fewer total titles than a broad aggregator, so heavy viewers may need a second service
Paramount+ CBS, Showtime-related shows and selected sports Broadcast, premium-cable and sports-oriented programming in supported markets Sports and exact Showtime or CBS availability vary by territory and plan
Peacock NBC and Bravo programming Access to those networks’ shows and related entertainment Plan structure and availability differ by market
Tubi Free streaming A broad, ad-supported catalog with no subscription fee Advertising, a changing catalog and fewer Netflix-style features
Kanopy and similar library services Documentaries and independent cinema Institution-funded access when a participating library or university supplies an account Eligibility, monthly play limits and catalog depend on the institution

If you want one starting point, pick the row that matches the programs you watch most often. If your household has sharply different tastes, two targeted services can be more economical than paying for one broad service and several unused add-ons.

How to compare streaming services before you cancel Netflix

Streaming services are not interchangeable utilities. Compare the following dimensions rather than judging a service by its total title count.

Catalog focus

A service can have thousands of titles yet be a poor fit if its genres do not match your viewing. Max concentrates on prestige scripted television, major films and documentaries. Disney+ is strongest when family and franchise libraries matter. Prime Video is unusual because a single interface combines subscription-included titles with rentals, purchases and optional channels. Tubi’s catalog is free but follows an advertising-supported model with a different rotation of movies and shows.

Original programming

Apple TV+ is the clearest originals-first choice: its value comes from a relatively compact set of exclusive series and films rather than from trying to reproduce every television back catalog. Max and the other network-linked services also carry originals, but their appeal is tied to a broader parent-company or network library.

Current-season television

Hulu is the most relevant alternative when your priority is watching recent television episodes, but that recommendation applies only in markets where Hulu operates. Paramount+ and Peacock can also be important for particular network schedules, while Max and Apple TV+ are not substitutes for a complete current-season broadcast lineup.

Documentaries and independent films

Netflix’s documentary page shows both documentary films and series, but no single competing service is automatically deepest in every subject. Compare Max, Prime Video, Kanopy and other library services by the subjects and filmmakers you actually watch. Kanopy can be especially useful for independent cinema and documentaries when a participating institution provides access.

Family suitability and profiles

Disney+ is the obvious first comparison for families and franchise viewing. Check the local service’s profile, parental-control and simultaneous-streaming rules before subscribing; those features, like titles, can differ by plan and country. A free service such as Tubi may be useful for adults in the household, but its advertising and catalog model are different from a family-focused subscription library.

Advertising, video quality and device support

Free and lower-cost plans generally trade money for advertising or a narrower feature set. Confirm whether the plan you are considering includes ads, downloads, 4K or HDR, and the audio format you use. A title’s quality can also depend on the app, television, internet connection and compatible sound equipment. Do not assume that a service offering 4K in one country or plan offers it everywhere.

Service-by-service guide

Max: the strongest prestige-TV and film substitute

Choose Max when your household values HBO-associated prestige series, Warner Bros. films, documentaries and high-profile scripted television. It is a particularly logical replacement for viewers who used Netflix mainly for acclaimed dramas, limited series and major movies rather than for current broadcast episodes.

Max is not a universal replacement. Its exact library, plan names, advertising options and video-quality tiers are negotiated by territory. Verify the local catalog before subscribing, especially if a specific film or documentary is the reason you are switching.

Prime Video: broad access with rentals and add-on channels

Prime Video works best for viewers who want one place to search a wide selection and are comfortable with more than one way to watch. Some titles are included with the streaming subscription; others can be rented or purchased, and optional channels can add further libraries.

That flexibility is its advantage and its budgeting trap. Before pressing play, check whether the title is included, a one-time rental, a purchase or part of an additional channel. If your household watches a small number of specific movies, paying for occasional rentals may cost less than maintaining several monthly subscriptions.

Disney+: the family and franchise choice

Disney+ is the best fit when children, family viewing or a concentrated set of major franchises drives the decision. Its library is easier to navigate for that purpose than a general service with a broad but inconsistent mix.

Adults seeking prestige dramas, live current-season television or a deep documentary range may need a second service. Check local age-rating controls, profiles and the titles available in your country rather than assuming the US catalog applies elsewhere.

Hulu: current-season television where available

Hulu is the most direct Netflix alternative for viewers who want recent episodes from an ongoing television season in a market where Hulu operates. It can reduce the need to wait for an entire season to arrive on a general subscription service.

Hulu’s availability is territorial. If you live outside a supported market, do not treat a US-focused Hulu recommendation as a promise that you can subscribe or access the same programs. In supported markets, compare the plan’s advertising, live or on-demand scope and any bundle requirements before replacing Netflix.

Apple TV+: a compact originals-first library

Apple TV+ suits viewers who prefer a smaller service centered on exclusive originals. The service can be excellent if a handful of its series or films match your taste, but its limited overall breadth means it may not satisfy a household that expects a new movie or a different genre every night.

A practical strategy is to subscribe for a season of a show you want, finish the available originals, then pause and return later. Confirm the current local plan and download or quality features if those matter to your routine.

Paramount+: CBS, Showtime-related programming and selected sports

Paramount+ is a logical choice for CBS programming, Showtime-related series and selected sports and entertainment. It can replace a specific slice of Netflix use when your viewing is organized around those brands or events.

Do not assume every sports property or Showtime title is included in every plan. Rights and plan structures vary by country, so check the event schedule and the exact tier before signing up.

Peacock: NBC and Bravo programming

Peacock is aimed at viewers who want NBC, Bravo and related programming in one service. It is most useful when those networks account for a large share of your weekly viewing, not when you are seeking a general replacement for every Netflix genre.

Because plan structures and availability vary by market, confirm which episodes, live channels or sports rights are included locally. A service built around one network family can be economical when it replaces a separate television package, but unnecessary if you rarely watch that programming.

Tubi: the broad free option

Tubi is the clearest broad free alternative named in current comparison coverage. You pay with attention to advertising rather than a monthly subscription, making it useful for a household that wants to cut recurring bills or watch occasionally.

The trade-offs are fundamental: a rotating catalog, advertising breaks and fewer Netflix-style features such as a unified originals strategy, offline downloads or the same profile experience. Tubi is best treated as a free supplement or a replacement for casual viewing, not as a promise of the same library depth or release schedule.

Kanopy and library-linked services: documentaries without another subscription

Kanopy and comparable library services can add documentaries and independent films at no direct charge when your public library, university or another participating institution provides access. The institution controls eligibility and may impose monthly play limits, so two people in different cities can have very different experiences.

Check your library’s digital-services page for enrollment requirements, supported devices and the local catalog. These services are particularly valuable when your viewing is subject-driven—documentary history, arts, social issues or independent cinema—rather than tied to one commercial studio.

No monthly subscription Tubi Free, ad-supported access Advertising tolerance and the rotating catalog
Documentaries and independent films Kanopy or a library service Institution-funded access may cover specialist material Library eligibility and play limits

What “cheapest” really means

Tubi is the clearest no-subscription option, but “free” does not mean equivalent to Netflix. Advertising replaces the monthly fee, and the catalog and features follow a different model. A participating library service can also be free to an eligible user and may be ad-free, but access is conditional on the institution.

For a paid baseline, Netflix’s US documentary page captured in 2026 displayed $8.99 per month for Standard with ads, $19.99 per month for Standard and $26.99 per month for Premium. Those figures are a snapshot of that page, not a universal or permanent price; Netflix plans and prices can differ by country and change over time.

Instead of comparing only monthly sticker prices, calculate your actual viewing pattern. A household may save by keeping one broad service, adding a library service and renting an occasional film. Another household may prefer two focused subscriptions and cancel each one when its current series end. Review the local plan pages immediately before payment because catalogs, prices and promotions change frequently; one comparison source notes that libraries can change about every 30 days.

Why your country changes the answer

Streaming rights are negotiated by territory. The same title may appear on different services—or on none—in another country. Subtitles, dubbed audio, release dates, plan names, advertising and video-quality options can also differ. Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+ and Kanopy are especially dependent on local operating arrangements or institutional participation, while even globally recognized services have country-specific catalogs.

Use the service’s local site or app store listing to verify four things before subscribing:

  • That the service is legally available at your address.
  • That the specific film, series, documentary or sports event is included in your territory.
  • That subtitles, audio languages and accessibility features meet your needs.
  • That the displayed plan includes the resolution, downloads and simultaneous streams you expect.

Do not buy a subscription based solely on a US list, a social-media recommendation or a title page that does not identify its market.

Putting several services on one television

A streaming device can simplify switching, but it does not bundle or pay for subscriptions. Amazon describes the Fire TV Stick as a compact device that plugs into a television’s HDMI port and provides apps including Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+ on almost any TV. Netflix’s supported-device documentation also lists Amazon Fire TV/Stick.

Amazon’s specifications identify the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) as a 4K streaming stick with Wi-Fi 6E. Dolby Atmos is supported for selected titles on services such as Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ when compatible equipment and content are used. The stick organizes access to apps; each service’s subscription, rental charge or advertising model still applies.

Basic setup

  1. Check that the television has an available HDMI port and that your home network can support the resolution you intend to stream.
  2. Plug the stick into HDMI, connect its power cable, select the matching HDMI input and complete the on-screen network and account setup.
  3. Install only the services your household uses, then sign in with each separate account. A Fire TV interface does not turn multiple subscriptions into one plan.
  4. Test one title from each service, checking picture resolution, subtitles, audio and whether the title is included or requires a rental.
  5. If you use a soundbar or receiver, confirm that the television and audio equipment support the desired Dolby format; the specification applies only to selected content and compatible equipment.

A practical switching plan

  1. List what you actually watched. Review the last month of viewing and group it into prestige television, current-season episodes, family franchises, documentaries, films, sports and casual viewing.
  2. Choose one primary service. Select the service that covers the largest category, not the one with the longest advertised catalog.
  3. Fill one genuine gap. Add a second service only if it covers a recurring need—such as children’s programming, current episodes or documentaries—that the primary service cannot meet.
  4. Check the local catalog. Search for three or four titles you would watch immediately. If most are absent, reconsider before paying.
  5. Decide how you will handle ads. Compare the monthly saving with your tolerance for commercial breaks, especially if children or frequent background viewing are involved.
  6. Set a cancellation reminder. Originals-first or network-focused services can be rotated. Schedule a review for the end of a season rather than allowing every subscription to renew indefinitely.
  7. Keep access organized. Use separate profiles where offered, record which service includes each title and review rental charges on Prime Video or other transactional catalogs before confirming a purchase.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a title is included

Search results can combine subscription, rental, purchase and add-on-channel listings. Read the label on the title page and confirm the charge before playback.

Treating a free service as a complete replacement

Free ad-supported catalogs rotate and generally do not reproduce Netflix’s originals, downloads, profiles or ad-free breadth. Use Tubi for the value it actually offers: no subscription fee and a changing selection.

Ignoring institutional access

Before paying for a documentary-focused service, check your public library or university. Kanopy access may already be included through an eligible account, although the available catalog and play limits are local.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying for a sports logo without checking rights

Paramount+ and other network services carry selected sports and entertainment, not every event associated with a parent brand. Verify the local schedule and plan tier for the exact competition or game.

Leaving every subscription active

Services designed around a particular network or a compact originals slate can be rotated. Keep a simple renewal calendar and cancel after the shows or events that justified the subscription are finished.
