Ledger’s official XRP documentation confirms XRP accounts in Ledger Wallet and lists Nano X among supported devices. Trezor documents XRP in Trezor Suite and recommends its Safe family, including Safe 5. Both keep signing keys on a dedicated device rather than an ordinary internet-connected computer or phone. The better choice depends on which software workflow, address-confirmation process, recovery routine and purchasing channel you can use confidently.
What a hardware wallet protects when you hold XRP
A hardware wallet is a physical device that generates and stores the private keys used to authorize XRP transactions. The keys are kept on the device and are not ordinarily exposed to the computer or phone running the wallet application. XRP Ledger documentation describes the central benefit this way: “The main benefit of using hardware wallets is that you can secure your information by disconnecting it from the internet when it’s not in use.”

The device does not hold XRP as a file. XRP remains recorded on the XRP Ledger; the wallet protects the credentials that let you prove control of an address and approve a transaction. When you receive XRP, the sender uses your public address. When you send XRP, the hardware wallet displays or confirms transaction details and signs only after you approve them.

This separation reduces the impact of many ordinary malware attacks. A compromised browser or desktop app may still show a false destination or attempt to alter a transaction, which is why checking the address on the hardware screen matters. It does not make every risk disappear: a stolen recovery phrase, a malicious setup process or an approval made without checking the details can still lead to loss.

Best documented XRP hardware wallets
| Wallet | Official XRP support | Key-protection model | Software workflow | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ledger Nano X | Ledger’s XRP page documents XRP support in Ledger Wallet and names Nano X among current devices. | Private keys are isolated on the hardware device; Ledger’s product information uses Secure Element language. | Set up the device, add an XRP account in Ledger Wallet, then use the app while approving actions on the device. | People who prefer Ledger’s established multi-asset app ecosystem and a mobile/desktop workflow. |
| Trezor Safe 5 | Trezor documents XRP in Trezor Suite and recommends Safe 5 as one of its best XRP choices. | Hardware-wallet isolation with device-confirmed receiving information in the Trezor workflow. | Connect the device, activate XRP in Trezor Suite, receive XRP and verify the address on the device. | People who want Trezor Suite and an explicitly documented Safe-family XRP workflow. |
There is no official evidence establishing a universal security winner between these two models. Neither the cited vendor documentation nor the XRP Ledger material provides an independent XRP-specific failure-rate, market-share or comparative-security statistic. Treat the table as a compatibility and workflow comparison, not a laboratory ranking.
Ledger Nano X for XRP
What the documentation establishes
Ledger’s official XRP wallet information says its hardware devices work with Ledger Wallet, can create XRP accounts and keep private keys in cold storage. The same page names Nano X among current devices. Ledger also reports “more than 8 million customers” on its 2026 page copy; that is a vendor-reported customer figure, not an independent market-share measurement.
How the Ledger workflow works
- Initialize the Nano X using the official Ledger setup process and create the device’s recovery backup when prompted.
- Install only the official Ledger Wallet application from Ledger’s own distribution channel.
- Connect and unlock the Nano X, then choose the option to add or create an XRP account in Ledger Wallet.
- When the app shows a receiving address, compare it character-for-character with the address displayed on the Nano X before giving the address to a sender.
- For a payment, enter the destination and amount in Ledger Wallet, review the transaction on the hardware screen and approve it only when the details match your intention.
Why choose Nano X
- Its XRP support is explicitly documented by Ledger rather than inferred from a third-party integration.
- The same application can manage multiple supported assets, which suits users who do not want separate software for each holding.
- Ledger documents both desktop and mobile-oriented use, useful for people who move between those environments.
- The private-key isolation and cold-storage model place the signing secret on the device instead of in the application.
Important limitations
- Support is a model-and-software question. Do not assume that every Ledger-branded device, firmware version or third-party wallet has identical XRP support; confirm the current Ledger documentation and the account option shown in the official application.
- The application cannot protect you from approving a wrong address. The hardware confirmation step is meaningful only if you actually compare the complete address and transaction details.
- A genuine device with a compromised recovery backup is not safe. Anyone who obtains that backup can recreate access without possessing the Nano X.
Trezor Safe 5 for XRP
What the documentation establishes
Trezor’s XRP documentation identifies Safe 3 and Safe 5 as its best choices for XRP and confirms XRP support across the Safe family and Model T. Trezor Suite is the documented software environment for activating and using an XRP account.

How the Trezor workflow works
- Initialize the Safe 5 through the official Trezor setup flow and create the recovery backup as directed by the device.
- Install or open the official Trezor Suite application. Avoid entering recovery words into a website, chat window or support form.
- Connect and unlock the Safe 5, then activate XRP in Trezor Suite.
- Select the XRP account’s receive function. Trezor Suite will show an address; use the device’s confirmation screen to verify that the address is the same before sharing it.
- For outgoing XRP, enter the recipient and amount in Suite, inspect the details shown on the Safe 5 and approve only after the hardware display agrees with your intended payment.
Why choose Safe 5
- Trezor explicitly documents XRP in Suite and names Safe 5 as a recommended XRP device.
- The receive process puts address verification on the hardware, helping you detect an address replacement in the computer environment.
- The Safe-family documentation also covers Safe 3 and Model T, giving users a documented device family rather than relying on an unlisted model.
- Users who prefer Trezor Suite can keep account creation, receiving and transaction review in one documented workflow.
Important limitations
- As with Ledger, compatibility can change at the software and firmware level. Confirm that XRP can be activated in the current Trezor Suite release before relying on a particular model.
- Suite’s on-screen address is not a substitute for the hardware confirmation. If the device shows a different address, stop and investigate rather than approving.
- Safe 3 and Model T are documented for XRP, but the comparison in this guide focuses on Safe 5 because Trezor identifies it as one of its best XRP choices.
How to choose between Nano X and Safe 5
Choose Nano X when the Ledger workflow fits you
Nano X is the practical choice if you already use Ledger Wallet, want its multi-asset account structure, or need the desktop/mobile workflow described in Ledger’s documentation. The deciding factor is not a claimed performance advantage; it is whether you can obtain an authentic device, use the official application and consistently verify transactions on the hardware.

Choose Safe 5 when Trezor Suite is the better control surface
Safe 5 fits users who want Trezor Suite, a Safe-family device with explicit XRP documentation and a receive flow that asks for device confirmation. It is especially sensible when you prefer to keep account activation and transaction review within that software environment.
Use this decision checklist
- Compatibility: Is XRP visible as a supported account in the current official application for the exact model you will buy?
- Address verification: Will you check the full receiving address on the hardware display before each first-time or high-value payment?
- Recovery discipline: Can you create, store and periodically inspect a backup without photographing or typing it into an internet-connected device?
- Connectivity: Which manufacturer’s connection and app workflow can you operate without installing unofficial extensions or software?
- Supply chain: Can you buy from the manufacturer or a reputable authorized channel and inspect the package and device before initialization?
- Usability: Which interface will make you more likely to review every transaction instead of approving prompts automatically?
Buy and authenticate the device safely
Use a trustworthy source
Buy directly from the manufacturer or a reputable authorized channel. Avoid a used device, an unsealed package, a seller who supplies a pre-written recovery phrase, or a listing that asks you to install software from a private download link. A hardware wallet should be initialized by you, not delivered with an account that somebody else created.
Inspect before setup
- Check the outer packaging for signs of opening, substitution or damage.
- Confirm that the model name matches the order and the manufacturer’s current product information.
- Start setup only through the manufacturer’s official application.
- Let the device generate or display the recovery words during initialization. Never accept a phrase supplied on paper, by email or by a seller.
- Complete any authenticity, firmware or device-integrity check offered by the official app before creating an XRP account.
XRP Ledger guidance highlights wallet-provider security and supply-chain attacks as relevant concerns. The same principle applies across manufacturers: provenance is part of the security model, not merely a packaging detail.
Set up an XRP account without exposing the recovery phrase
Common rules for either wallet
- Perform initial setup in a private location where no camera, visitor or remote observer can see the recovery words.
- Write the words in the exact order shown by the device. Do not store them in cloud notes, email, a password manager, a phone photograph or a computer document.
- Do not type the recovery phrase into a website, browser extension, support chat or “verification” form. Legitimate support should not need it.
- Create the XRP account only after the device and official application pass their setup checks.
- Make a small test receipt if you are unfamiliar with the workflow, then verify that the address shown in the app matches the hardware screen.
Receiving XRP
- Open the official wallet application and select the XRP account.
- Choose the receive option and display the proposed address.
- Use the hardware wallet’s confirmation screen to verify the address. Compare the beginning, end and every character in between; a partial glance is not enough for a high-value transfer.
- Share the verified address through the channel you trust.
- After the sender submits the payment, wait for the wallet application and the XRP Ledger to show the transaction according to their normal confirmation process.
Sending XRP
- Obtain the recipient’s address through a channel that has not been altered by a clipboard-replacing or browser-injection attack.
- Paste or enter the address in the official wallet application, then check the amount and destination.
- Read the destination address and transaction details on the hardware screen, not only in the computer or phone window.
- Reject the request if the hardware display differs, the recipient changes the address unexpectedly, or the application asks for the recovery phrase.
- Approve on the device only when the details match your intended payment.
The recovery phrase is the highest-impact operational risk
The device can be replaced; the recovery backup is what allows the wallet to be restored. Losing the physical wallet does not by itself lose the XRP if the recovery backup remains intact and secret. Conversely, possession of that backup can let another person recreate wallet access even when the original device is still in your possession.

- TAMPER-EVIDENT SECURITY LAYERS - Each coin includes peel-to-reveal protection that helps provide a clear visual signal if the private key area has been accessed. Once opened to move funds out, the coin should not be reused for secure cold storage.
Store the backup as a separate security layer
- Keep it offline and away from the hardware wallet so one theft or accident does not remove both layers.
- Use a durable metal backup product if you need protection against fire, water or paper deterioration; it should hold the same words and remain private.
- Store it where trusted heirs could locate it under your estate plan without making it accessible to visitors or service providers.
- Do not make extra copies casually. Each copy increases the number of places an attacker could discover it.
What to do if the phrase may be exposed
Treat a suspected disclosure as an emergency. Do not enter the phrase into a “checker” to test whether it works. Initialize a new, authentic hardware wallet, generate a new recovery backup, verify the new XRP receiving address on the device and move funds using a transaction you inspect carefully. If you cannot establish that the new device and backup are trustworthy, pause rather than transferring to an address you have not verified.
Threats a hardware wallet does not solve automatically
False receiving addresses
Malware can replace an address in a browser or clipboard. Device confirmation is the defense, but only if the user compares what the hardware displays. For a new recipient, compare the complete address and consider an independent confirmation through a trusted channel.
Phishing and fake support
Messages claiming that an account is suspended, a transaction is frozen or a recovery phrase is required are common social-engineering patterns. Close the message and open the official wallet application yourself. Never provide the recovery words to support, a website or a person claiming to be a manufacturer representative.

Loss, theft or damage
Physical loss is recoverable only when the recovery backup is available and has not been exposed. Keep the backup legible and protected, and test your documented recovery plan only in a controlled environment where the phrase cannot be captured by a camera or networked computer.

Troubleshooting common XRP-wallet problems
XRP is not listed in the application
Confirm that you installed the official Ledger Wallet or Trezor Suite application, update it through the official channel and check support for the exact device model. Do not assume that a third-party application’s claim of support overrides the manufacturer’s current documentation.
The receiving address on the device differs from the computer
Reject the transaction. Disconnect from the application, check for unauthorized software or extensions and restart the receive flow from the official wallet. If the discrepancy persists, contact the manufacturer through its official support route without sharing the recovery phrase.

What is and is not established about security comparisons
The available official material establishes device isolation, documented XRP compatibility and the importance of address verification and recovery-phrase protection. It does not establish that Nano X has a lower failure rate than Safe 5, that Safe 5 resists a particular attack better, or that either manufacturer has a measured share of XRP users. Claims that assign a precise probability of loss or declare one model universally safest would go beyond the documented evidence.
Final buying decision
Buy the model whose official XRP workflow you can verify, whose device screen you will use for every important address and whose recovery process you can maintain for years. Nano X is the documented Ledger choice for users who prefer Ledger Wallet and its multi-asset desktop/mobile workflow. Safe 5 is the documented Trezor choice for users who prefer Trezor Suite and the Safe-family XRP process. In both cases, an authentic purchase, an offline recovery backup and disciplined hardware-screen verification matter more than a marketing claim or an unverified comparison chart.
