Best overall for finding a nearby fuel price: GasBuddy is the strongest dedicated gas-price app for drivers in the United States and Canada. Best while you are already driving a route: Waze, because its station search, price sorting and stop-adding tools work inside navigation and project to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Best benchmark: AAA’s Gas Prices service, which publishes daily national, state and local averages from a large station sample. For Spain, GasGuru is the relevant regional option.
No app can promise that the displayed number is the cheapest or that it still matches the pump. Community reports can age, and even official averages describe a market rather than one specific station. Use the apps as decision aids, check the displayed update time when available, and confirm the price on the station sign before fueling.

How gas-price apps produce their numbers
The number on your screen can come from a driver report, an official feed, an aggregated commercial data provider, or a combination. That source determines what the number means and how quickly it can become stale.
Community-reported prices
GasBuddy and Waze depend substantially on user submissions. This approach can expose a low price at an individual station faster than a broad market survey, especially when a driver has just fueled. It also creates uneven coverage: a busy corridor may have several recent reports while a rural station may show an older entry. A report can be wrong, entered for the wrong fuel grade, or left unchanged after a station updates its sign.

Official and aggregated data
AAA’s service is designed to describe market conditions. AAA states that its figures are updated daily by Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), and that up to 120,000 stations are surveyed every day in cooperation with WEX, Inc. A national or state average is useful for judging whether today’s prices are generally high or low, but it cannot guarantee the price at the nearest pump.
GasGuru’s Spain terms describe public official data refreshed approximately every 30 minutes. That is a stated data refresh for its source, not a promise that every station’s sign changes on the same schedule. The same terms caution that the displayed amount may differ from the pump.
Why the displayed price can differ from the pump
- The station may have changed its price since the last report or feed refresh.
- The report may apply to regular gasoline while you need midgrade, premium or diesel.
- A user may have entered a price incorrectly or selected the wrong station.
- The app may show a general or averaged value rather than a station-specific cash or card price.
- Data can be sparse in areas where few drivers report prices.
Before detouring, look for the report time or update indicator, compare more than one nearby station, and verify the sign when you arrive. Treat a large apparent bargain as a lead to check, not a guarantee.

GasBuddy: the broadest dedicated price-finding toolkit
For a driver whose main task is “show me the cheapest fuel near me,” GasBuddy is the most directly focused choice of the four. Its Google Play listing, identified as a 2026 listing from GasBuddy Organization Inc., reported more than 100 million downloads, user-submitted prices and reviews, and coverage in the United States and Canada. The listing also describes rewards and payment features, so the app can be more than a map of prices.
What it does well
- Station-level discovery: You can use a dedicated map and list rather than starting with navigation directions.
- User context: Reviews and reports can help you judge whether a station is convenient or recently visited by other drivers.
- Potential savings tools: Rewards and payment features are part of the listed product, although eligibility, partner terms and availability can change.
- Cross-border usefulness: The stated United States and Canada coverage suits many North American road trips.
How to use it without overtrusting the number
- Allow location access only at the level you are comfortable with, then search the destination or area instead of assuming the first result is cheapest.
- Filter or inspect the exact fuel grade you need. A low regular price is not a valid comparison for premium or diesel.
- Sort nearby results by price, then inspect the report age and station details before choosing a detour.
- Compare the total detour distance with the expected savings. A small per-gallon difference can disappear in extra fuel and time.
- At the station, read the posted sign and pump price. If they conflict with the app, use the current on-site price and consider reporting the change through the app.
Privacy trade-off
GasBuddy’s Google Play data-safety disclosure says location, personal information and device IDs may be shared with third parties. That is a provider disclosure, not proof that every user’s data is handled identically in every situation, but it is a material consideration for a price-focused app. Review the current store label and the app’s permission settings before enabling background location, rewards or payment functions.
What is not established
The listing documents user reporting but does not establish a guaranteed update interval or a universal alert cadence. If your installed version offers price notifications, regard them as advisory and check the timestamp and fuel grade; do not assume a notification means the pump price is still unchanged.

- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Waze: the best gas-price workflow while navigating
Waze is the practical choice when the question is not just “where is cheap fuel?” but “which station can I reach without abandoning my route?” Waze says it displays nearby stations with community-updated fuel prices, lets drivers sort by price or distance, and allows a station to be added as a quick stop along an existing route.
Station search and stop workflow
- Start or open your route in Waze.
- Open the search or add-a-stop control and choose the fuel-station category.
- Review the nearby list or map. Sort by price when savings are the priority, or by distance when a short stop matters more.
- Check the fuel type and the age of the community price where shown. Waze supports regular, midgrade, premium and diesel entries, but coverage for a particular grade depends on user updates.
- Select a station and add it as a stop. Waze then incorporates the stop into the current route instead of requiring a separate trip.
CarPlay and Android Auto
Waze supports dashboard projection through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That makes it the strongest option here for drivers who want station discovery on the vehicle display rather than handling a phone. Pair and configure the system while parked, and use voice or the vehicle controls when possible; do not type or browse while moving.
Privacy controls
Waze provides controls for personalized ads, visibility, navigation history and account deletion. Its privacy help also says you can delete a single drive or your entire navigation history at any time. Depending on your settings, location may be checked outside active navigation, so review background-location permissions if continuous location access is unnecessary.
Freshness and limitations
Waze documents community-updated prices, not a guaranteed refresh schedule. A station with no recent contributors may have an old value, while a busy station can receive a useful update shortly after a price change. Waze is therefore excellent for an in-route decision but should not be treated as an official price record.
AAA Gas Prices: the strongest official benchmark
AAA’s Gas Prices service answers a different question from a dedicated station-finder: “What is the current average price for this market?” AAA says the service is updated daily by OPIS and that up to 120,000 stations are surveyed daily with WEX. It publishes national, state and local averages.

- Trip budgeting: Use a state or local average to estimate fuel spending before a long drive.
- Timing a purchase: Compare today’s market level with recent conditions instead of reacting to one unusually cheap or expensive station.
- Checking an app result: If a community listing is far outside the local average, verify the grade, report age and pump sign before detouring.
- Comparing regions: National and state figures provide a consistent reference when you cross a border.
What the average cannot tell you
An average is not a quote for the nearest station. It blends many stations and locations, and it is updated daily rather than every time an individual pump changes. It also cannot account for every station-specific discount or a particular cash-versus-card price. Use AAA to establish a baseline, then use a station-level app or the station’s own sign for the final decision.

Privacy profile
AAA says volunteered personal information is not sold or shared with other organizations for commercial purposes. Its website still automatically collects standard analytics information, including IP address, timestamps, pages visited and search criteria. That distinction matters: limited sharing of volunteered information does not mean the website collects no technical data.
GasGuru: a Spain-focused alternative
GasGuru is not a general replacement for the North American choices. Its September 1, 2026 terms describe coverage in Spain and prices drawn from public official data updated approximately every 30 minutes. For a driver in Spain, that regional focus can be more relevant than an app whose strongest coverage is elsewhere.
The same terms warn that displayed prices may not match the pump. Check the station sign before fueling, particularly if the displayed value would justify a long detour. CarPlay and Android Auto integration, rewards, privacy controls and a guaranteed alert schedule are not established by the available terms, so verify those points in the current app listing rather than assuming parity with Waze.

How to think about price alerts
A price alert can mean several different things: a notification when a user reports a change, a reminder that a saved station is below a threshold, or a periodic refresh of a data feed. Those are not equivalent. The available product descriptions do not establish one universal alert cadence for these services.
Set expectations correctly
- Community-based notifications depend on someone submitting a new price.
- A daily benchmark can tell you the market moved without notifying you the moment a particular station changed.
- A feed refreshed approximately every 30 minutes can still lag the physical sign or reflect a delayed official publication.
- Phone notification permissions, battery restrictions and background-location settings can prevent an alert from appearing even when the service has one.
A practical alert routine
- Choose a small set of stations you would realistically use; alerts for distant stations create noise rather than savings.
- Enable notifications only after checking what event triggers them in the current app version.
- When an alert arrives, open the station details and check the report time, fuel grade and distance.
- Compare the expected savings with the detour and your vehicle’s fuel consumption.
- Verify the sign at arrival. If the price is different, use the current on-site amount and update the app when possible.
Privacy: choose the trade-off you can accept
Calling any of these services “private” without qualification would be misleading. Each provider describes a different mix of location use, account data, advertising controls and web analytics.
| Provider | What the disclosure says | Questions to check before use |
|---|---|---|
| GasBuddy | The Google Play data-safety panel says location, personal information and device IDs may be shared with third parties. | Can you use foreground location only? What data is required for rewards or payment features? Are you comfortable with third-party sharing? |
| Waze | Offers controls for personalized ads, visibility, navigation history and account deletion; location may be checked outside active use depending on settings. | Is background location needed? Have you disabled personalized ads or visibility settings you do not want? Do you know how to delete a drive or all history? |
| AAA | Says volunteered personal information is not sold or shared with other organizations for commercial purposes; the website automatically collects IP address, timestamps, pages visited and search criteria. | Would a browser-based benchmark meet your needs without creating an account? Are you using a browser privacy setting appropriate for routine analytics? |
| GasGuru | The cited terms establish Spain coverage and price caveats but do not provide the same detailed disclosure in the available material. | Read the current privacy notice, permissions and deletion process before granting location or creating an account. |
Reduce exposure on any app
- Use “while using” or foreground location when continuous access is not necessary.
- Turn off precise location if an approximate area is sufficient for your search.
- Review notification, advertising and account permissions after major app updates.
- Delete navigation history or the account when you stop using a service, following the provider’s current process.
- Do not enter payment details merely to view prices; use payment features only when their terms and data requirements are clear.
Which app should you install?
Choose GasBuddy when
You live in the United States or Canada, regularly compare several stations, and value a dedicated price map, user reviews or listed rewards and payment tools. Accept that user reports vary in age and that the store disclosure includes possible third-party sharing of location, personal information and device IDs.

Choose AAA when
You need a credible daily baseline for budgeting, regional comparison or checking whether an app result looks plausible. It is the best benchmark here, not a guarantee for one pump and not a substitute for station-level directions.
Choose GasGuru when
You are in Spain and the service’s local official-data coverage is more useful than North American-focused alternatives. Confirm current platform support, privacy terms and the pump price, because the terms expressly warn that displayed prices can differ.
A money-saving workflow that uses the strengths of each service
- Start with the local AAA average when you are planning a trip or deciding whether current prices are unusually high.
- Use GasBuddy for a broad station search in the United States or Canada, or Waze if you are already following a route.
- Compare at least two nearby stations and use the same fuel grade for each.
- Check update times and calculate the real saving after the extra distance.
- Navigate to the selected station with Waze or your vehicle’s approved system, keeping the phone hands-free.
- Confirm the posted pump price. If it differs materially, choose based on the sign and report the change so later drivers have better information.
This workflow deliberately separates a market benchmark from a station report and from route execution. That makes each number easier to interpret and reduces the chance that a stale bargain sends you on an expensive detour.
Common mistakes and fixes
Driving across town for a tiny difference
Calculate the saving per gallon, multiply by the amount you will buy, and compare that figure with the fuel and time required for the detour. A station that is two cents cheaper may not be the cheaper trip.

Assuming a recent-looking map pin is a recent price
Station location and price age are different pieces of information. Open the station details, look for a timestamp, and favor a report with a clear recent update over an undated bargain.
Treating an average as a quote
AAA’s daily average is valuable for context, but it aggregates many stations. Use a station-level listing and the physical sign for the purchase decision.
Granting more location access than necessary
Set foreground or approximate location when that is enough, and revisit permissions after updates. Waze’s controls and GasBuddy’s store disclosure show why location settings deserve an explicit decision rather than an automatic approval.

Configure routes and dashboard projection while parked. Waze’s CarPlay and Android Auto support can keep the station search on the vehicle display; drivers without those systems can use a properly secured car phone mount and set the route before moving.
Bottom line
For most U.S. and Canadian drivers, install GasBuddy if dedicated station-price discovery is the priority, Waze if navigation and in-car integration matter more, and use AAA’s daily averages as the reality check behind either choice. In Spain, GasGuru is the regional option described by its current terms. Whichever service you use, the reliable habit is the same: match the fuel grade, check freshness, account for the detour, protect your location data, and verify the pump.
