For a household budget, side business, tax worksheet, or freelance invoice, an office suite does not need to cost $70 or more per year. The important question is what “free” means: a fully offline desktop program, a browser-based tool tied to an account, or a proprietary app with paid upgrades and cloud limits.
This 2022 comparison separates those options. LibreOffice is the strongest all-purpose free desktop choice, ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is particularly useful when Microsoft file compatibility matters, and Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are the best fit for shared household or work documents. Microsoft also offers free browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but those are not the complete installed Office applications.
What counts as a free office suite?
“Free office suite” can describe several very different products:

Best free office suites in 2022
1. LibreOffice — best overall free desktop suite
LibreOffice is the most defensible default for someone who wants a complete office suite without a subscription or online account. It includes:
- Writer for letters, reports, and invoices
- Calc for budgets, debt schedules, and financial tracking
- Impress for presentations
- Draw for diagrams and basic page-layout work
- Base for databases
- Math for formula editing
It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its core applications work offline. That makes it useful for people who want to keep a local copy of a budget or net-worth workbook rather than storing every file in a vendor’s cloud.
In 2022, LibreOffice 7.3 was released on February 2 and LibreOffice 7.4 on August 18. The 7.3 release placed particular emphasis on interoperability with Microsoft formats. That did not mean perfect DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX compatibility. Complex files containing macros, unusual fonts, embedded objects, advanced charts, or carefully positioned graphics can still look or behave differently after opening.
LibreOffice is open source and uses open document formats, including ODT and ODS. It can also open and save Microsoft formats. Before relying on it for a tax workbook or business spreadsheet, open a copy of the file, inspect the formulas and print layout, and save a test PDF.
On Windows, LibreOffice’s listed requirements include Windows 10 or 11, at least 256 MB of RAM, and up to 1.5 GB of disk space. Java is needed for certain features, particularly parts of Base, but not for normal Writer, Calc, or Impress use.
Best for: a full offline suite, open-source software, no subscription, and no account requirement.
Watch out for: the claim that LibreOffice is merely an old version of OpenOffice. They are separate projects with separate development and release schedules.
2. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors — best for exchanging Microsoft Office files
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is a free, open-source desktop suite licensed under AGPL v3. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux and supports formats such as DOCX, ODT, XLSX, ODS, CSV, PPTX, and ODP.

Its interface and document model are especially attractive to people who regularly exchange files with Microsoft Office users. That can matter if a client sends an XLSX budget template, an employer expects a DOCX form, or a small business needs to return a presentation without substantially changing its appearance.

The notable 2022 releases were versions 7.0, 7.1, and 7.2. Version 7.0 added local form creation and editing. Version 7.1 added features including PDF viewing, PDF-to-DOCX conversion, print preview, and performance improvements. Version 7.2 added a plugin manager and further form and spreadsheet features.
For Ubuntu 22.04, the documented installation route was Ubuntu Software Center → search for “ONLYOFFICE” → onlyoffice-desktopeditors. The terminal alternative was:

Some editing capabilities are available online but not in the desktop application, and server deployments have separate community, enterprise, cloud, and licensing arrangements.

Watch out for: “ONLYOFFICE is free” is too broad if you are discussing hosted servers or enterprise features. The free desktop editors are the relevant product here.
3. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides — best for collaboration
Google’s browser-based suite is a strong choice when two or more people need to work on the same document. A household can share a monthly budget, business partners can update a cash-flow sheet, and a student or freelancer can leave comments without emailing multiple attachments.
Its advantages include simultaneous editing, comments, sharing controls, version history, and access from multiple devices. The main compromise is that it is not a conventional, fully offline desktop suite.

- Open Google Drive.
- Choose Settings.
- Under Offline, enable “Create, open and edit your recent Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files on this device while offline.”
- Install the Google Docs Offline extension in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
- For an individual file, right-click it in Drive and choose Available offline.
Offline mode depends on a supported browser, the extension, local storage, and synchronization when the connection returns. It is therefore not equivalent to installing Calc, Excel, or another desktop spreadsheet program. If an important budget file must be available during travel, mark it for offline use before leaving and confirm that it opens with the internet disconnected.

Best for: shared budgets, collaborative work, comments, and browser access.
Watch out for: assuming that every Drive file is automatically available offline.
4. Microsoft 365 for the web — best for Microsoft’s interface
A free Microsoft account provides browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, plus 5 GB of OneDrive storage. For someone accustomed to Microsoft’s menus and file formats, this is often the least disruptive free option.
The browser apps are convenient for basic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. OneDrive also makes it straightforward to open files from different devices and share them with other people.
The crucial limitation is that these are not the full installed desktop Microsoft Office applications. Advanced desktop features, local offline use, and the complete application set require a qualifying license or subscription. Seeing “Word” in a browser does not mean that Word is licensed for installation on the computer.
Best for: users who want Microsoft’s interface and basic Microsoft-format compatibility without installing software.

5. WPS Office — best familiar all-in-one interface
WPS Office combines Writer, Spreadsheet, Presentation, and PDF tools. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and the web, and its interface will feel familiar to many Microsoft Office users.
The free tier includes core document, spreadsheet, and presentation functions, while Pro and AI features are sold separately. WPS’s comparison information in the period covered by this article listed 1 GB or more of integrated cloud storage for the free tier, compared with 20 GB or more for Pro. Storage allowances and feature entitlements can change, so treat those figures as a 2022 snapshot rather than a permanent promise.

Advertising also depends on the platform. WPS support documentation stated that PC products did not currently display ads, while Android could show selected ads and limited them to less than 20% of the experience. That is why “WPS is completely ad-free” is not a reliable blanket description.
Best for: people who want a polished, Microsoft-like interface across many device types.
Watch out for: proprietary licensing, account and cloud considerations, paid feature tiers, and platform-specific advertising.
6. FreeOffice — best lightweight proprietary desktop option
SoftMaker FreeOffice includes TextMaker, PlanMaker, and Presentations. It is offered for personal and business use and provides a choice between a ribbon interface and classic menus.
It is a sensible option for someone who wants a conventional desktop suite without the broader application set found in LibreOffice. PlanMaker can handle everyday household budgets and tracking sheets, while TextMaker and Presentations cover ordinary document and presentation needs.

The trade-off is licensing: FreeOffice is proprietary rather than open source. Also, version descriptions need to be date-specific. The current product is FreeOffice 2024, so “FreeOffice 2021 is the latest version” would be inaccurate in a current article. For this comparison, FreeOffice belongs in the 2022 landscape as a lightweight proprietary alternative.
Best for: straightforward offline work and users who prefer a traditional Microsoft-style interface.
Watch out for: fewer open-source credentials and potentially different compatibility behavior with complex files.
7. Apache OpenOffice — only when you have a specific reason
Apache OpenOffice remained free and open source, with versions 4.1.12 and 4.1.13 released during 2022. It can still handle basic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, particularly in established OpenDocument workflows.

However, it is not interchangeable with LibreOffice. They are separate projects, and LibreOffice had the more active major-release cadence and more visible interoperability-focused development in 2022. For a new user choosing a general-purpose free desktop suite, LibreOffice is usually the stronger recommendation.
OpenOffice may still make sense when an organization already standardizes on it or a legacy workflow specifically requires it. An article updated today should also avoid presenting 4.1.13 as current: later OpenOffice releases included 4.1.14 in 2023, 4.1.15 in 2023, and 4.1.16 in 2025.

Protect your financial files whichever suite you use
A free office suite does not automatically provide a safe backup system. Keep at least one additional copy of important budgets, invoices, tax records, and account reconciliations. If you use cloud storage, enable a strong password and two-factor authentication. If you work locally, back up the files to an external drive or another protected location.
Before sending a financial document, check the sharing permissions and consider exporting a read-only PDF. For spreadsheets received from another person, keep the original file untouched and work on a copy. Finally, test formulas, dates, currency formatting, print areas, and charts after moving a file between suites.
