Best eBay Alternatives for Selling Used Items Locally or Online (U.S. Guide)

The best eBay alternative depends first on how the buyer will receive the item. For a face-to-face sale, start with Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp. For a shipped general item, Mercari is the clearest broad-market option covered here. Etsy belongs in the comparison only when the used item qualifies as vintage or otherwise meets Etsy’s creative-goods standards.

This U.S.-focused guide compares audience fit, pickup and shipping workflows, fees, payout timing, seller protections, and the failure points that can erase your proceeds. Platform terms can change, so verify the live fee and protection pages for your location and listing before you publish.

Choose the selling method before choosing the app

A local listing and a shipped listing are different transactions. Local selling can avoid boxes, labels, carrier claims, and delayed payment, but it limits you to people willing to meet nearby. Shipping expands the geographic pool but adds packing, postage, tracking, handling deadlines, returns, and platform rules.

What you are selling Best starting point Why Important qualification
Bulky household goods, furniture, appliances, or items you do not want to pack Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp Buyers can arrange local pickup and inspect the item before taking it. OfferUp’s current policy is local pickup only; Facebook delivery is location-dependent.
Ordinary, compact goods that can be packed and tracked Mercari It supports shipped general merchandise and publishes a straightforward seller-fee formula. Package, category, protection, and handling rules apply.
Eligible vintage, handmade, designed, or otherwise qualifying creative goods Etsy Its marketplace is built around items that meet its Creativity Standards. It is not a general outlet for every used possession, and several separate fees may apply.
Items with uncertain demand or a niche local audience List on one local platform first, then add a second only if you can synchronize inventory A second listing can improve exposure without committing you to shipping. Remove the duplicate immediately after a sale to avoid accepting payment for an unavailable item.

Local selling: Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and OfferUp

Facebook Marketplace: the flexible local starting point

Facebook says an individual can sell through Marketplace, buy-and-sell groups, or a Page. That gives you several ways to place the same item in front of relevant local communities: a broad Marketplace listing for general searches, a specialist group for an item category, or a Page when you already manage one.

Do not assume every account has the same delivery controls. Facebook’s own help guidance says you may be able to offer shipping depending on where you live. Treat local pickup as the dependable workflow unless your account explicitly shows an eligible shipping or checkout option. If a shipping control is absent, state “local pickup” clearly rather than promising postage.

How to make a Facebook local listing useful

  1. Photograph the complete item, its model or serial label where appropriate, and every material defect.
  2. Put the neighborhood or a nearby landmark—not your exact home address—in the description.
  3. State the price, whether it is firm, the pickup window, and whether the buyer must bring help for a heavy object.
  4. Keep messages inside the platform until you have agreed on a time and public meeting location.
  5. Mark the listing pending while someone is on the way, then remove or mark it sold immediately after the handoff.

Facebook’s responsible-buying guidance is a useful reminder that a platform listing is not a guarantee of a safe buyer, valid payment, or successful handoff. Inspect cash, confirm an electronic payment in your own account rather than trusting a screenshot, and do not release an item because someone says a payment is “processing.”

Craigslist: simple classifieds with location-dependent charges

Craigslist remains a practical classified option when you want a plain local post without building a shop. Its fee policy is not universally free: some categories and locations require a posting charge. Craigslist’s U.S. fee table lists for-sale-by-owner posts at $0 to $5; cars, trucks, motorcycles, and RVs/campers are listed at $5. The exact charge depends on the category and geographic area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Craigslist posting fee is a one-time charge, not a subscription or an additional recurring payment. The site says fees vary by geographic location, so use the local posting flow to see the amount before submitting. Because the fee schedule can change, do not treat the upper end of the table as a universal price for every listing.

When Craigslist is the better local choice

  • You want a straightforward classified ad for a large item that is impractical to ship.
  • Your buyers are likely to search by city or metro area rather than by a national product catalog.
  • You prefer to negotiate pickup details directly instead of using a platform shipping workflow.

Use a precise title, measurements, condition notes, and a realistic pickup area. Avoid publishing your full address, and arrange meetings during daylight in a busy public place when the item is portable. For a large item that must be collected from your home, have another adult present and keep the buyer in the designated pickup area.

OfferUp: a material change to its shipping policy

Older articles may describe OfferUp as a marketplace with shipped listings. That description is now outdated. OfferUp’s support guidance, updated September 22, 2026, says it supports only local, in-person transactions and that all items are posted and sold for local pickup.

The transition matters if you are reusing an old listing or advice written before the change. OfferUp says newly posted items lost shipping on September 23, 2025, and shipping was removed from most existing listings by October 21, 2025. Build your plan around an in-person exchange, not a prepaid label or platform shipment.

For an OfferUp listing, include the pickup area, dimensions, condition, and the earliest time you can meet. Because there is no current shipping path under the support guidance, a buyer who is several states away is not a realistic lead. Confirm the final price and payment method in the message thread before meeting.

Mercari for shipped general merchandise

Mercari is the broadest shipped alternative in this comparison for ordinary used goods that can be packed into an acceptable parcel. Its U.S. fee page states that new or updated listings from January 6, 2025 incur a 10% seller fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. Listings themselves are free. That fee base is easy to misunderstand: the buyer’s shipping charge is included when Mercari calculates the seller fee, so do not estimate your net by taking 10% only from the displayed item price.

Mercari shipping and handling workflow

  1. Create an accurate listing and choose either your own shipping method or a Mercari prepaid label, where available.
  2. After a sale, pack the item so it can withstand normal carrier handling and retain the tracking record.
  3. Drop the parcel with the carrier within Mercari’s stated handling window. Mercari’s seller-protection guidance gives you three days after the sale to carefully pack and drop off the item.
  4. Keep the acceptance receipt or other proof of handoff until the transaction is complete.
  5. Wait for the buyer’s rating. Mercari says payment is released after the buyer rates the transaction.

Mercari’s prepaid labels include shipping protection of up to $200 under its seller-protection terms. That is a conditional protection limit, not a promise that every loss, damage claim, or dispute will be reimbursed. Follow the label, packaging, documentation, and claim requirements exactly. If you ship on your own, check which protection terms apply before assuming the same coverage.

Categories and parcels that need extra checking

Mercari’s fee page lists package limits and says national shipping is unsupported for motorized items, furniture, bicycles, and major appliances. Those limits can make a seemingly suitable item a poor fit for a shipped listing. A bulky item may be better sold through a local platform even when a buyer outside your area might pay more.

Mercari’s fee page shows new shipping rates with an effective date of October 19, 2026. Because the fee information reviewed for this guide predates that effective date, do not treat those future rates as already in force. Recheck the live label price and package limits when you create the listing.

Understanding Mercari’s payout convenience fee

Mercari lists a $3 fee per completed Instant Pay transfer. This is an optional payout convenience charge, not an additional selling commission. Include it only if you choose Instant Pay; it does not change the 10% seller-fee calculation.

Etsy is conditional, not a general used-goods marketplace

Etsy should be considered only when the item fits its Creativity Standards. Etsy describes qualifying goods as made, designed, handpicked, or sourced in ways covered by those standards. Eligible vintage pieces may fit, but an ordinary used household item, used electronics, or clothing with no qualifying creative or vintage basis is not automatically suitable.

Known U.S. Etsy charges

Charge Published amount or rule What to watch
Listing $0.20 per listing, active for four months or until it sells The listing charge applies even if the item does not sell.
Transaction 6.5% of the transaction, including seller-set shipping Shipping you charge the buyer is part of the fee base.
U.S. payment processing example 3% plus $0.25 Processing varies by the bank country; this is the U.S. example.
Offsite Ads 15% when the shop is below $10,000 in Etsy sales over the prior 365 days; 12% at or above that threshold, subject to Etsy’s rules and cap This is conditional advertising cost, not an automatic charge on every order.
Shop setup A one-time setup fee may apply The amount is not stated in the cited U.S. seller information and can vary.

These figures are separate components, not one combined commission. For example, a qualifying vintage item can incur the listing fee, transaction fee, payment-processing fee, and possibly an Offsite Ads fee. Check the country-specific terms and the order’s actual advertising status before calculating your net.

Returns and Purchase Protection on Etsy

Etsy requires sellers to set a return policy for each new or edited physical-item listing, even when the policy says no returns. You remain responsible for the policy you publish. Etsy’s Purchase Protection help documentation says eligible orders may receive up to $250 of coverage in specified cases, with eligibility conditions; remaining refund amounts may be charged to the seller. The documentation distinguishes cases opened before May 7, 2026, so use the current terms rather than assuming every historical order follows today’s rules.

Compare the money you actually keep

Headline commission percentages are only one part of the calculation. Before selecting a platform, write down the expected item price, buyer-paid shipping, platform fee, listing charge, payment-processing fee, advertising fee, packaging cost, postage, and any optional payout charge. Then subtract every applicable amount from the buyer’s payment.

Platform Listing charge Core selling fee Shipping or payout considerations
Facebook Marketplace Not stated in the cited guidance for a standard local listing Depends on the transaction option available to your account; local pickup avoids a parcel workflow Shipping may be available depending on where you live.
Craigslist $0–$5 for U.S. for-sale-by-owner posts, depending on category and location; $5 listed for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and RVs/campers Posting charge is a one-time fee where required Buyer and seller arrange pickup and payment directly.
OfferUp Not stated in the cited support guidance Current support guidance describes local, in-person transactions only No current shipping workflow; plan for pickup.
Mercari Free listings 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping for new or updated U.S. listings from January 6, 2025 Prepaid labels can include up to $200 shipping protection; Instant Pay costs $3 per completed transfer.
Etsy $0.20 for four months or until sale 6.5% transaction fee, plus the U.S. processing example of 3% + $0.25 and possible Offsite Ads Seller-set shipping is included in the transaction-fee base.

A simple net-proceeds example

Suppose a Mercari buyer pays $80 for an item and $12 shipping. The published 10% seller fee is calculated on $92, so the fee is $9.20 before your packaging, postage, or any other applicable amount. Your net is not simply $80 minus $8. Use the actual label cost and your packing materials to finish the calculation.

For a local Craigslist sale, a $5 posting charge may be the only platform charge in the cited fee schedule, but you still need to account for travel, supplies, and the value of your time. For Etsy, add the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee on the order including seller-set shipping, the applicable processing charge, and any advertising charge before comparing the result with a local cash sale.

Safety, payment, and protection differences

For local pickup

  • Use a public, well-lit meeting point for small items; many police departments designate safe-exchange areas.
  • For heavy or valuable goods collected at home, have another adult present and keep the buyer out of private rooms.
  • Do not hand over the item until cash is counted or the payment is visible in your own financial account.
  • Never accept a buyer’s screenshot, an overpayment followed by a refund request, or a request to send a verification code.
  • Describe defects in writing so the buyer can make an informed decision before traveling.

For shipped orders

  • Use the platform’s address and label instructions exactly; an off-platform address can defeat tracking or protection.
  • Photograph the item, serial number where relevant, packaging, and the sealed parcel before drop-off.
  • Keep the carrier acceptance record until payment is released and the dispute window has passed.
  • Read the protection exclusions and claim deadlines; a stated dollar limit does not remove the need to document the shipment.
  • Price returns and damaged-item risk into your decision rather than treating protection as guaranteed insurance.

Mercari’s release-after-rating process and Etsy’s conditional Purchase Protection are different from a local handoff, where payment normally occurs at the meeting. Do not compare the platforms only by commission; compare who controls the payment, when funds become available, and who bears the loss when an item is damaged or disputed.

A repeatable listing process

  1. Classify the item. Decide whether it is bulky, fragile, restricted, ordinary merchandise, or a qualifying vintage/creative good.
  2. Choose pickup or shipping. If packing or carrier limits make shipping impractical, use a local platform. If the item is compact and demand may be spread across regions, consider Mercari.
  3. Record the facts. Measure dimensions and weight, note model numbers, test functions, list defects, and gather clear photographs.
  4. Calculate a floor price. Subtract platform fees, postage, packaging, travel, and a realistic allowance for negotiation from the amount you need to receive.
  5. Write the handoff terms. State pickup area or shipping method, availability, payment method, handling time, and return expectations that the platform requires.
  6. Publish on one platform. Start where the item fits best instead of scattering inconsistent descriptions across several apps.
  7. Monitor messages and remove sold inventory. If you add a second listing, keep prices and availability synchronized and delete the duplicate immediately after a sale.
  8. Close the transaction carefully. Save receipts, tracking, payment confirmation, and buyer messages until the platform’s completion and dispute periods have ended.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Using old OfferUp shipping advice

Symptom: You look for a shipping toggle or promise a mailed delivery to a buyer. Fix: OfferUp’s September 22, 2026 guidance is local-pickup only. Rewrite the listing for an in-person exchange or move the item to a platform that supports shipping.

Calling Craigslist universally free

Symptom: Your category reaches the posting screen and asks for payment. Fix: Check the local fee shown for that category. The U.S. schedule ranges from free to $5 for for-sale-by-owner posts, with location and category determining the amount.

Underestimating Mercari’s fee base

Symptom: Your payout is lower than 90% of the item price. Fix: Recalculate 10% on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, then subtract packaging and the actual shipping arrangement. Check package restrictions before accepting the sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Listing an ordinary used item on Etsy

Symptom: You cannot explain how the item meets Etsy’s creative-goods standards. Fix: Use a general local or shipped marketplace instead. Reserve Etsy for goods that are made, designed, handpicked, or sourced within its stated standards, including eligible vintage pieces.

Posting on several platforms and forgetting one

Symptom: Two buyers agree to buy the same item. Fix: Keep a single inventory note with every live listing, pause duplicates while negotiating, and remove every other listing immediately after payment or a confirmed handoff.

Which alternative should you use?

Choose Facebook Marketplace when you want a broad local starting point and may also have access to buy-and-sell groups or a Page. Verify whether your account and location support delivery before advertising shipping.

Choose Craigslist when a simple classified post suits a bulky or city-specific item and you accept a possible one-time category or location fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OfferUp when you want another local-pickup channel and can meet in person. Do not rely on pre-September-2026 descriptions that call it a shipped marketplace.

Choose Mercari for a shippable general item after calculating the 10% fee on item price plus buyer-paid shipping, confirming package limits, and accepting the three-day drop-off deadline and conditional protection terms.

Choose Etsy only when the item clearly qualifies under its creative-goods standards and the combined listing, transaction, processing, and possible advertising charges still leave an acceptable net payout.

For any platform, the most reliable comparison is the amount in your pocket after every fee and fulfillment cost, adjusted for the time, safety, and risk of the transaction—not the largest advertised audience or the lowest headline commission.
